#SundayFunday @BookmarkTavern

No one new to the scene at all, but I only discovered his work only this year:
Japanese mystery author Akimitsu Takagi (1920 -1995).
I devoured The Noh Mask Murder by him in March this year.

The Comeback | Ella Berman

Pickpick

This book nearly destroyed me.
Written in brilliant brittle prose, it shows the main character Grace, come to fame as an actress in her early teens, floating untethered through that no man's land between life and nothingness; between detachment, depression, guilt, insecurity, loneliness, emptiness, self-destruction & utter despair and flickers of hope, trying to cope somehow after being abused sexually and emotionally by her mentor in Hollywood.

Yuki_Onna ... continued:
I felt the need to write down quote after quote after quote from this.
Though very different in time and the topic at its core, it had the same quality to me as Play It As It Lays by Joan Didion, one of my top modern classics. All the stars.

Thank you, Netgalley and Head of Zeus, for the chance to read a copy in exchange for an honest review!

Today sees the 24th of May, time for the drawing of #TwinPeaksReadingChallenge 's featured prompt of May/June.
Remember, it is completely optional whether you try to prioritise the prompt or not! It's a bit of added spice for those who feel like it.

This month the prompt is 24. Katherine Martell - a book you had/will have to push yourself through. (This one I've already completed, thankfully... 😮‍💨)

A #SundayFunday I actually know an answer to! 😂

Yes, I do. Not as often as I'd like to, as new reads are always tempting and luring, but I try to make time for rereads.
Those are either all time favourites I have reread several times to experience the atmosphere, mood etc. again or past faves I don't remember all too well and am curious to see how the story plays out & if they live up to the fond memories.

#HauntedHouse

A Japanese horror movie from 1977. A wild experimental mix of styles, original & totally bonkers. You wonder what drugs the whole staff were on while making this.
Certainly gruesome, creepy & slasher in parts, it's visionary, dramatic and also quite feminist for its time.
First and foremost, a hilarious haunted house movie.

Yuki_Onna @CaramelLunacy It's set in Israel at the very beginning (Jerusalem, me thinks), but then they go on to Jordan and visit Petra. Just three?!?😮 How, Denise???😁

I just love 80s music. I cannot possibly decide.
And as a fan of Pet Shop Boys and Depeche Mode, (not only their 80s songs!) I love two groups that had their first success in the 1980s which makes it even more impossible to choose.
3 fave songs from other artists:
1. True Faith by New Order
2. Moonlight Shadow by Mike Oldfield
3. The Loco-Motion by Kylie Minogue

Gunhild, Volume 2: The Hunt for Loki | Saturday AM, Fred Tornager
post image
Pickpick

Gunhild is trying to prevent Ragnarok, i.e. The Great Battle and subsequent perishing of the Gods and the End of the World, with the help of Loki, trickster god par excellence of Old Norse mythology.
🔽

Yuki_Onna Continued:
The art style of this graphic novel is pretty impressing, clearly Manga-inspired yet conveying the Old Norse/Germanic mythology perfectly. I found the storytelling to be very confusing at times, however, this is a cool addition to the superheroes/myth retelling graphic novel universe. A low pick. 3,5/5⭐

Such a sweet book! Nearly all picture and wordless, the illustrator, Carolina T. Godina, cannot be praised high enough. The eponymous moon bear is the just the cutest little one and the stardust/moonlight he's made of adds magic sprinkles.
Moon Bear is a quick, magical read. 4,5/5⭐

2. Unheimlich (=eerie, uncanny), a YA romantic thriller omnibus by Ursula Isbel. Got it on my 13th b'day. Still reread it every once in a while.
3. After Dark and/or Dance Dance Dance, my two faves by Haruki Murakami.

The Noh Mask Murder | Akimitsu Takagi
post image
Pickpick

An old seaside mansion. Dark gothic atmosphere. An exotic setting. Sinister locked-room mystery. Depraved and broken characters. A public prosecutor in search of the truth. Unreliable narrators.
Japan, unsettled nation during the aftermath of WWII. Multiple elaborate murders. Elegant, refined prose. An outstanding translation.
...

Yuki_Onna Continued:
Eerieness creeps through the pages like the seaside mist underlying the story.
Historical murder mystery, social commentary, character study, domestic thriller, gothic literature.
Maybe the perfect book for the perfect time exists. The Noh Mask Murder has it all.
5/5⭐

I've been participating in #Gottacatchemall hosted by @PuddleJumper since the beginning of 2024.
Until now, however, I wasn't sure about how I wanted to play the challenge. Did I want to use a book for multiple fitting prompts or did I want to do “1 book for just 1 exact prompt“?
I've now decided to do the 'One book = one prompt' approach this year, it's more difficult and more fun 😊
Just logged my first books and caught my first #Pokemon 🥳

PuddleJumper It's way more difficult! I'm enjoying it though 4mo
Yuki_Onna @PuddleJumper - Me too!😁If I used one book for several prompts, I would have caught and/or evolved most of the Pokémon by now, but I somehow found that too easy. It's not much of a challenge. Doing the 1 Book for 1 Prompt is way more difficult, but so fun! 👏 4mo
