One week away and only 8 books bought… 😬 All except The Ten Thousand Doors of January were total whims. So I would love to know if you have read any of them? All except Life Between the Tides (which I bought from Lyme Regis bookshop) were second hand. A holiday isn‘t a holiday without some unnecessary book buying!

30/23 i finished listening to this one whilst on an evening beach walk last night. I have loved Jasper Fforde since I was a teenager. And this book was just as imaginative and creative as ever, and had just as much heart. There was a lot to pack into the story but I would say that unusually for his books this one was a little long for me.

29/23 I‘ve just finished this and it is the most terribly written thing I‘ve put my eyes on in a while. I was also very troubled by some of the content. 28/23 This book… it has caused more “discussions” with the men in my life than anything else. I am forever changed by the simple realisation that I am not crazy, what I believed to be true (and unfair) about the experience of women is backed up by data… sometimes… I strongly encourage you to read this book (I listened. It was read very well by the author - in the photo).

27/23 I will never stop thinking about this book. Strange, dark, full of characters blurred somewhere between truth and fiction. It sucks you in and spits you out at the end, unsure of what has just happened. It was a wild ride. So much happens within is 200 pages. This is my #booked2023 #inmemoriam pick. Seabrook sadly died young and had only written two books.

I am in love with this little book. I had never heard of it or the author before I found it in a charity shop. Definitely judged it by its cover. And on this occasion it paid off! It‘s taking me on a wild ride through the dark side of Kent and it‘s historical characters. I‘ve learnt about TS Elliot, Dickens, chimney sweeps, the artist Richard Dadd and I have no idea where we are going next! What a lovely surprise in a pretty package.

Ruthiella I JUST heard about this book on the most recent Backlisted podcast! Crazy book serendipity! 1mo
Magpiegem @Ruthiella I had an even WEIRDER coincidence. I went on Google to look this book/author up after I started reading it and came across a Guardian article from 2016. At the bottom of the article the writer mentioned she had done a podcast (I‘d never heard of) episode about the book. I went to look up it up . As you know, this weeks episode is a rerun of THAT episode on this book from 2016! I felt like I had fallen through a vortex 😂 (edited) 1mo
Ruthiella @Magpiegem Clearly you were MEANT to read this book now! 1mo
Magpiegem @Ruthiella so true! I wish there was a podcast by interesting people talking about every book I‘ve just finished! It was nice to hear other people‘s thoughts! I hope you read it so I can hear what you think! 1mo

25/23 This book was my April book club read (this was us last night). I think we were all a little apprehensive about this choice- a memoir about a women losing her partner, a renowned artist, to early onset Alzheimer‘s disease. But we all agreed it was well written and a compelling read despite the hard topic. It wasn‘t perfect and some bits seemed unnecessary but I think it could help people going through the same situation.

20/23 This book spoke to my heart. What I wouldn‘t give to be allowed to spend my times touring bookshops! It was a love letter to bookshops, book people, and books. I listened to this one which was great because it was narrated by the author but I do wonder if the physical book has a list of bookshops/ mentioned books at the back? Does anyone know? Photo from the garden of one of my fave bookshops in Alfriston.

squirrelbrain Love the bench! I just checked my copy and it‘s more of an index of shops rather than a full list of addresses. There‘s also an index of all the books he mentions. 19/23 I finished this book a couple of days ago but needed time to let it settle. I loved it, but when I talk about it, a book about lynchings, racism, bigotry, it doesn‘t sound right to say I found it very (darkly) funny, extremely entertaining and original. But that‘s the truth. The New Yorker described it as deadly serious comedy, this is correct. Everett is extremely talented and I will certainly be picking up more books by him. 5⭐️
