One of my all time favourite fantasy books!
This is a stand alone novel filled with magic, interesting creatures, and a woman who vows to save her village from raiders and the new magical creatures terrorising it!

So according to the books litsy page, 3 years after I said I was picking this one back up, I have finally finished it!

Brian‘s journey into acting and his various roles is great to read about. There was less of his exploits in mountaineering, little about his private life, and nothing much on his other explorations and endeavours than I would have preferred. However it was still an enjoyable read with the larger than life Blessed at the helm!👌🏻

Covering all 3 seasons of Tribe, this book covers Bruce Parry‘s time living with 15 tribes.

Although I loved all of them, my favourites were in the colder climates such as Siberia. You see a lot about African and Amazonian tribes but little about those in the colder (potentially harsher?) climes.

If you liked the series this is a great read ❤️

This is my second time reading this book (so it is fresh in my memory when I start the rest of the trilogy) and it‘s as good as the first time!

Following the death of a historian, Shara goes to Bulikov to investigate. Once the seat of the world, ruled by divine beings, Bulikov is no longer the city it once was and speaking of the divine is forbidden. But it appears the historian found out a dark truth, and that not all the divinities are dead.

It is amazing that with all of the achievements of the human race, there are still ancient civilisations that are a mystery to us. Whose cultures are forgotten, and whose cities are hidden in thick expanses of impenetrable jungle, untouched by humans in hundreds of years.

This was an interesting and decade spanning journey, and I loved how easy it was to follow. Douglas does an amazing job of describing the work that went into...cont👇🏻

Bookworm54 ...researching potential sites, the use of lidar in the initial scans, and the ground truthing of one of the sites found by lidar. He also delves into the hardships and perils of jungle living, deforestation, and looting of sites of archaeological importance.

We still know so little of the people who once populated the large cities in the Mosquitia Jungle, neighbouring the Mayan cities, and I hope that one day we are able to find out more!

I absolutely loved this book!

Steven Johnson pulls together several reports and accounts into a compelling narrative of urbanisation, disease, and epidemiology.

How all the threads of investigation by various boards, Henry Whitehead, and John Snow came together, confirmation of the theory via another outbreak, the importance of the disease maps both then and now, and the potential implications of city living blew my mind!

Overall I did enjoy this trip along the Nile. From it‘s contested beginnings in Rwanda to the Mediterranean Sea, Levison Wood had an extraordinary journey. This was a massive feat of endurance and truly inspirational.

My main issue with this (and why it is a so-so rather than a pick) is that you never got a big insight into any particular part of the journey or the communities he spent time with. But it is hard to fit a year into one book!

It is nearly the end of January, and my first book of 2019 is complete.

The writing was beautiful, but I never felt personally invested in the characters and the story didn‘t seem to go anywhere. The way the author covers racial injustice, isolation of the characters, and the depiction of music is stunning. However this isn‘t a book I would choose to come back to in the future.

I was lent two of C.J.Sansom‘s books by my Uncle, Dissolution and Lamentation. These are of the same series, but have several books in between. The past few weeks have been very busy, but I have finally finished Stiff.

This book won‘t be everyone‘s cup of tea. It discusses in detail the things cadavers can be used for when donated to medical science. It describes the process of decomposition, future funeral techniques (some may even be current now that 15 years have passed), and yet there is humour and awe interspersed in this book.

Life doesn‘t have to end when you die.
