This was my pick for #FairytaleReadingChallenge #Rapunzel

It‘s the first in a series and follows Rapunzel out in the world after being thrown out of her tower for betraying the witch.

The background to the story is the familiar tale of Rapunzel, and then this follows her trying to find her place in the world and get over her love, coming across lots of other fairytales (like donkeyskin, the emperors new clothes, and Bluebeard!)

Today we had Shir Chai (a very sweet chai tea) with fresh naan flatbread in the afternoon, and some more flatbread with kebabeh degee morgh (chicken kebab) and an Afghan salad for tea (dinner/evening meal)

The kebab sauce didn‘t get quite as thick as in the pictures, but was very tasty. The mix of flavours was delicious! ☺️

Finally finished this #AlmostAChunkster for #FoodAndLit #Cuba

It wasn‘t what I expected. It felt like a cross between a Jane Austen novel, Moll Flanders, and Gone with the Wind?

Set in nineteenth century Cuba, young Mulatto Cecilia (of unknown parentage, though we know straight away really) falls in love with a rich white man Leonardo. It is regularly remarked upon that she looks like his sister Adela. This is not a coincidence… 👇🏻

Bookworm54 The blurb also kind of gives the final couple of chapters away. I expected it to play more of a role in the story! Regardless the book is full of dances, intrigue, class politics, scheming, and despite often leaning towards listing notable people and their clothing, was an interesting read. Some of the interludes between masters and slaves were quite difficult to read however. 1w

A day late in posting, I hit 20 chapters for #20in4 but alas I did not exceed this, and I still have a few chapters of Cecilia Valdes left (but within my grasp!)

I did however have a nice couple of days in London, with some solid reading time on the trains 😋

Again sticking to just the one roll for May :)

Thanks to my eclectic mix on this list, my #Roll100 this month is an audiobook! (The others so far have been ebooks).
I have heard good things about The Goblin Emperor, from a story and audio perspective, so looking forward to making this my audio commute book!

At 17hr38 I am going to have to be super dedicated to it 🤣

shanaqui I love the Goblin Emperor! I've not listened to the audio, but it's the kind of book that flies by for me. If you have access to the physical copy you might want to keep it to hand, though, for the glossary/Dramatis personae; there's a lot of playing around with language, making names and titles potentially confusing! 3w
PuddleJumper Looks interesting! 3w
Bookworm54 @shanaqui thanks for letting me know! Always useful to have something to refer to if the names etc can get confusing. Glad you enjoyed it though, I am excited to dig in :) 3w

Well I didn‘t quite hit my goals, but I did finish Lady Chatterley‘s Lover, and start Cecilia Valdes (even if I didn‘t make it to 50%. It has been slow going as I am finding the timeline quite confusing at the start and keep going back on myself!)

Thanks for running these @Andrew65

Well I can see why this was banned back in the day. Some of the language even now would upset some people‘s sensibilities 🤣

Overall I enjoyed this one. A lady in a sexless marriage begins an affair with her husbands game keeper. I do struggle reading dialect in books, and it shames me to admit this as a Yorkshire lass, but it took some deciphering when the game keeper slipped into that vernacular!

#AwesomeApril #Roll100

PuddleJumper I could never get on with DH Lawrence. There was something about the writing that didn't click 1mo

I listened to this one on audiobook so it took me a while.
It was predictable, but still really enjoyable, relatable, and an interesting premise. I liked that there were others like her mentioned too.

There was a teeny bit where they called someone else Nora by mistake (a couple of times!) and I am not sure if that was a typo or the narrator, but aside from that I enjoyed listening to this one! :)

This was my #FoodAndLit #Greece pick, and also my #DoubleSpin

I liked this but didn‘t love it. The book spanned a large period of time, and the friendship between Maria and Anna. But Maria is often overshadowed by Anna‘s presence, and unsure of who she is without her.

At the start I wasn‘t sure if I liked this, but overall I enjoyed it. It definitely picked up once the training/action started! I do struggle with unreliable narrators, and Selene (a half-elf who has lost the memories of her elf life after becoming a changeling) is most definitely unreliable in my opinion.

I like the mix of characters though, and might come back to this series when I want a cosy paranormal read. ☺️

The narrative didn‘t go where I expected it to.

It starts by describing how Alejandra shot her father in a locked room before burning it down with both of them inside it. I assumed the rest of the book would explain how we got to that point.
The story explains some of this, but not how we reached such a drastic end… it focused more on her lover, on their tumultuous relationship, and her fathers obsession with the blind.

Pickpick

This was for #FairytaleReadingChallenge and is a #BeautyAndTheBeast retelling

It wasn‘t what I expected but was a pretty good retelling.

Bellamy takes a summer job babysitting at the Baldwin house. She has free reign of the house, but can‘t go on the third floor. She knows that must be where Tate lives, in seclusion since he became ill. She knows what it is like to have people whisper about you, since her dad is known for seeing ghosts 👇🏻

Bookworm54 She didn‘t know what to believe, until she followed a trail of rose petals that only she could see to the third floor. There follows a beauty falling for the beast tale, interspersed with ghosts, corruption, and a murder to solve. #FabulousFebruary 3mo

No One Sleeps in Alexandria | Ibr?h?m ?Abd al-Maj?d, Ibrahim Abdel Meguid

I enjoyed this book, but it was a hard one to get through.

The story follows Magd al-Din, a Muslim Egyptian forced from his village with his family, that moves to Alexandria at the start of the Second World War. Alexandria is a melting pot of cultures, and he befriends a Coptic Christian named Dimyan. The two of them eventually get posted to the train station in Al-Alamein during the height of the fighting. 👇🏻

#FoodAndLit #Egypt

Bookworm54 While I enjoyed the story of Magd al-Din and Dimyan, it was interspersed with sections discussing what was happening in the world war at the same time, and what was showing at the cinema.
