This was quick, and funny in places. But it‘s less Santa having a midlife crisis and more hipster execs taking over Christmas!

It has some good messages though. It‘s still Christmas even if presents are delivered in the mail, and Santa can go hang out at the beach more 🤣

December is here! And this year I have a #RedAndGreen advent calendar, which fits the #FestivePhotoChallenge prompt for today ☺️

Started my morning with a cinnamon hot chocolate!

I will be participating in lots of readathons during #WinterGames focusing mostly on the main TBR I posted. Hoping to get at least a bingo line and finish at least 5 Christmassy books :)

This finished off my #20in4 at around 10 hours.
I did read well over 20 chapters though and finished the 2 book I wanted (tagged and cobra event).

This was an #Aladdin retelling for October‘s #FairytaleReadingChallenge :)

It was a great retelling. Jinni, the gifted, an evil man with the gift of persuasion, a group of thieves. I might read the rest of this series at some point. This ended in a cliff hanger and I hope to revisit these characters!

This was a really good read!

After two people die following violent seizures and evidence of self cannibalisation, the CDC send one of their pathologists to investigate. She uncovers that these are not just cases signalling an epidemic, but something more sinister. Someone is testing bioweapons and it is likely that the scale of attacks will continue to increase.

This got me another 2 hours for #20in4 and was my pick for #PosedByTheBook #Cobra

Roped the boyfriend into corn tortilla making today.
They worked out okay overall 🤣 some were used in this recipe, and the other half I plan to make into tortilla chips tomorrow :)

We made Enfrijoladas with feta cheese (inside the tortillas and on top) and sour cream. Unfortunately our coriander was not looking so good so we skipped that topping!

The black beans have some arbol pepper powder in so had a nice heat ☺️

I picked this one for #PosedByTheBook #TwistedSeat (a challenge which I may or may not complete by the end of the year)

This was part of a series, though I didn‘t feel like I missed anything starting part way. April is around 14 years old. After finding out her grandma is dying, her grandma tells the family about her bucket list and how she wants to go on a family skiing trip. It was written like a diary and while it was a okay, it wasn‘t for me!

Caught up with #ParanormalLoveCrews October read.

I really liked this origin story of the sea witch. It was young adult yes. But I thought the setting was rich, and loved this take on how she came to be, and linking it back to the little mermaid towards the end. Glad I listened to some of it though as it was set in Denmark and I couldn‘t pronounce anything! 🤣

#PLC #Mermaids

ElizaMarie Glad you enjoyed it. I was a bit iffy because it felt “too YA” but I mean that‘s what it was. No need to not enjoy it because I was expecting something racier. 6d

This was my #FoodAndLit pick for #Mexico

It is a coming of age story, with some magical realism elements, and with a suggestion that the narrator is dead and recalling memories up to that point to the imagined reader. It was strange, lyrical, and I think it probably has lot of layers that I haven‘t picked up on!

While it wasn‘t a pick for me, I will definitely try others by this author in the future.

I chose the side book for #ParanormalLoveCrew this month as it was already on my list of books I should pick up.

It took me a little while to get into the 2 narrative styles, of Jane and Beast, but once I did I got totally sucked in.
I do love urban fantasy though!

Jane is a vampire killer, but is hired by vampires to take out a rogue. But during this mission she will also begin to discover more about her own nature and how she came to be.

I liked this take on Norse Mythology narrated by Loki, but I didn‘t love it.

Prince Nolan decides that the best way to determine whether his betrothed is the spoilt princess her letters portray, is to get himself turned into a frog for 30 days (or until she kisses him) to see how she treats him.

The story is okay. It follows the original with some padding. But the characters aren‘t fleshed out or likeable, and the dialogue is simple, moving to gushy at the end. This one is only so-so for me.

Like 1984, this one is still super relevant.
I think it emphasises the greed and power hungry nature of those in power (in particular dictators) and how they can take advantage of followers through gaslighting and clever speeches. Lots to think about with this one.

The chapters were long. There were some weird bits - I‘m not sure if I would describe it as like magic/supernatural but there was something. The end also threw me a little. But I liked the merging of character arcs and the science, the tech, and the politics. Overall I think it was worth it, but I don‘t know if I would recommend it per se!

In Sylvia‘s chapter we meet Lee, a doctor who thinks the salon is a front for a brothel, and wants to take samples from the employees for research. This reminded me of something I read when doing my dissertation (How the CCR5 gene confers resistance to HIV, and its evolution) and how one of the first mutations was found in Kenyan prostitutes. And this is discussed in Thandiwe‘s chapter!
Who knew my dissertation would come in handy for #FoodAndLit?

I really enjoy true crime, but I get scared easily so don‘t partake often 🤣
I chose to listen to this one on audio for #ThatsClassic during my commute and it was so good! The narrator was amazing, and the book itself riveting. From the discovery of the crime through to the search for clues, the arrest and the time in prison, it really covered all bases. And actually, I found it more sad than scary… great pick!

EvieBee I really enjoyed this one, too. It also really scared me. The sheer waste of it all. 1mo
TheSpineView Awesome! 1mo
bthegood I found the way Capote laid out the story - a butterfly effect - if one thing had changed early on - it would have meant no crime. This is one of the scariest books I've read - due to way it is written and based on true story. 1mo

The 3rd instalment of Vampire Cheerleaders/Paranormal Mystery Crew was a true crossover! The PMS discover an accident which implies the presence of vampire cheerleaders in Bakertown. Now they have a no kill agreement with PETM (think paranormal/cryptic protection agency) they make a plan to capture the cheerleaders.
