Ahhh, so many wonderful goodies in my #BeltaneBox from @DinoMom ! And yes, that is a gorgeous scarf on the bottom. I really appreciate the informative note you included too. Happy Beltane from southern Michigan. It rained heavily overnight, and the birds are singing this morning. High of 65 today! Last week we still had highs in the 40s and lows in the 20s, so it was a chilly April. But now it‘s May! Only my big back bed remains to be burned off. Spring is here.

This was my #BookSpin! It‘s a lovely deep dive into an American history spanning the 19th and 20th centuries, and one woman‘s journey into the extreme cocoon of loneliness that immense wealth brings. My husband bought it for me for Christmas a few years ago, so I checked a book off my shelves! Huguette‘s father, William A. Clark, was born in 1839. Huguette died in 2011. ⬇️

(Monday‘s Sunrise; 17 F. Today: 67 F upcoming!)

MittenGirlPeach The story is interesting and well-told, and Gordon is a wonderfully empathetic biographer. There‘s a lot of background, but it‘s all eminently readable. Four stars. 3mo

The Sentence | Louise Erdrich

Pickpick

Good morning, dear littens. I have serious Litsy housekeeping to attend to today. First up, I read both my #BookSpin and my #DoubleSpin this month! Even though I was sh*t at readathons, I got that done.

The Sentence: this might be lengthy, so bear with me. I liked it, I loved some of it, and I was unenthusiastic about some of it. It took me half the book to really care. At that point I finally got sucked in. ⬇️

MittenGirlPeach I love Erdrich‘s work, but I do find it problematic at times. Too opaque? I fully agree that this could be on me. Regardless, by the time it got to the start of the pandemic I was invested, and then it got really good. It felt so TRUE. Everything about that time was spot on. The character of Louise, the bookstore owner (uh huh) is VERY AMUSING, and had some terrific lines, and the book had a madcap caper feel, especially in the beginning. ⬇️ (edited) 3mo
MittenGirlPeach Toward the end we go off on a tangent regarding Laurent that was totally WTF to me. Why on earth was that in there? But by then I was so happy to be finishing I mouthed ‘whatever‘ to myself and went with it. The writing, as always, is gorgeous. The subject is timely. Definitely a pick, glad I read it, glad it‘s finished! 3mo
MittenGirlPeach Finally, I‘ve been drinking my delicious new Ostara coffee from @Chrissyreadit all week. It was such a terrific package. 3mo

I unabashedly love the Richard Jury series. This installment was sadder to me than the first two were, but that only made it a bit different, not less enjoyable. Aunt Agatha featured more in the first two books, and of course that results in wittily amusing exchanges. The friendship between Jury and Melrose Plant makes me smile; it gives both characters an opportunity to reveal themselves and be less alone. ⬇️

MittenGirlPeach When I started the first book I had no idea that Melrose would become Jury‘s Watson and appear in all the books, so it was a happy discovery. 4mo

Reader, she went out. And was pissed. It was, of course, MY fault she went out. But I digress! This was the aftermath of our 13 inch snow just over a week ago. I‘m guessing that will be the pinnacle of snowstorms for us this winter in south central Michigan, but we‘ve got time to prove me wrong.

The book: I REALLY liked this one. Different from the Galloway series, with various perspectives and a gothic storyline and feel. ⬇️

MittenGirlPeach The perspective of the teenage daughter in particular was fabulous, and the detective at the center, who is not the main character of this story, is terrific. Harbinder is her name, and she‘s the character the series continues with. I have the second book checked out from the library, so it will go on my March #Bookspin list. 4mo

Afternoon update on the snow situation in southern Michigan, and catching up on January reviews. I like this series, and I enjoyed the second installment in it. This series isn‘t in my top tier (Gamache, Lynley, Serailler, for example), but it‘s very enjoyable. The writing can feel a little clunky at times, as in “and then they ate a sandwich” clunky. It‘s not seamless in how information is imparted. 👇🏻

MittenGirlPeach But I really like Matilda and the mysteries are engrossing and keep me guessing. I‘ve got the third book in my TBR stacks. I‘ve been able to find them used via Amazon; my library doesn‘t carry them. The advantage to buying books is being able to share them! I sent a number home with my brother after his New Year‘s visit. 5mo
MittenGirlPeach The picture was taken this afternoon from our back deck. I just thought it was a pretty composition. The snow is still falling here, so we‘ll see what tomorrow looks like. We‘re on a dirt road, and since it rained all last night (ugh) then froze and snowed, it‘s treacherous out there, despite the plows having been through. Another good reading and watching curling day is in store for tomorrow! 5mo

MittenGirlPeach @TheBookHippie you get extra snow AND wind! We‘ve had no snow to speak of at all up until now, which is becoming more and more common, of course. But it‘s starting to become heavy out there, so we‘ll see! 5mo
TheBookHippie @MittenGirlPeach We already had a couple of feet we are just adding to it! The wind is NO JOKE. They just told high schoolers not to leave for lunch it's too treacherous. TheAromaofBooks Ooooo nice!!! We are currently getting bucketloads of rain (SE of Columbus OH) with incredibly vague information as to when it's going to switch to ice and then switch to snow... nothing like being give a range of somewhere between 0 and .75“ of ice and somewhere from 1-8“ of snow 😑 Usually the more wound up they are the less we get, so I'll be surprised if anything happens haha 5mo
TheBookHippie They‘re sending us home early 🤦🏻‍♀️❄️🥶 5mo

MittenGirlPeach @TheBookHippie that‘s something at least, but why have it at all?!!!! Argh. Drive safely! 5mo
MittenGirlPeach @TheAromaofBooks ughhhh. Rain and ice are the worst. Depressing and treacherous and it‘s cold regardless! Much rather have snow. 5mo
MittenGirlPeach @SRWCF yikes! We had a few inches on the ground here, but it‘s been a very snowless winter so far. Until now! 5mo
SRWCF @MittenGirlPeach We still have some snow on the ground from a mild storm a few weeks ago, but it hasn't even snowed at the ski resorts recently. This weather has been cray-cray lately! 5mo

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!!! Are you also scheduled for a lot of weather? They are being quite vague as to how much rain/ice/snow we are going to get, but right now they are saying a half inch of ice! 😬 I'd much rather have the snow! 5mo
MittenGirlPeach @TheAromaofBooks we‘re in the 12-16 inches forecast, the heaviest swath, and since we don‘t have to go out in it we‘re really looking forward to it! We‘ve had so little snow this winter; this will probably be our only big storm. I‘ll post pictures as the storm progresses! 5mo
TheAromaofBooks Oh I'm so jealous!!! I honestly love snow, and those times when you can just cozy right down and watch it happen are the BEST! My #Bookspin for January has been read! Definitely a pick. Maybe 3.5 or 4/5. I like the main characters a lot, and the central mystery was compelling. The setting in the Toronto area was a definite plus. The historical parts of the mystery, set during the Bosnian War, were really difficult reading, and some of the characterizations of women were rather judgmental, but all in all a solid debut. I‘m definitely continuing with the series.

A terrific first book in a new series for me. Matilda is a bit of a grieving mess, but she‘s got wonderful loved ones and a good team overall. And the mystery is *really* good. A cold case that comes to life. No I did not see the end coming. Highly recommended. And it was my #doublespin! @TheAromaofBooks

I loved the light on this pic I took the other night.

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!!! And I like the light, too - it almost looks like you are underwater or something! 6mo
MittenGirlPeach @TheAromaofBooks we have LED strip lights around the window, and I thought the green glow was underwater/otherworldly too! By the way, I‘ve started yet another Dalgliesh. Ha. P.D. can definitely write. The next two after this are set in the Fall, so I‘ll have a break before I read them! (edited) 6mo
TheAromaofBooks I love your system of reading them seasonally! That's such a fun idea. 6mo

Happy #jolabokaflodswap day to all, and especially @Chili for the lovely gifts and @MaleficentBookDragon for a terrific swap. I‘d forgotten I wanted this book, so it was a splendid surprise! It‘s such a perfect choice for the season. And Cadbury‘s is my favorite; I‘m in heaven. I‘m having coffee in bed opening presents right now, and since we‘re staying close to home for Christmas I have ALL DAY to read. Ahhhh.

JamieArc Sounds wonderful! Happy Jolabokafloding! 6mo
Chili Enjoy! Happy Reading!! 6mo

1. My big gift wish was for the fancy new iPhone, and my husband got it for me earlier this month. I love it! I‘m hoping for kindness and a handle on the virus in the coming year.

2. I love winter and snow and I always hope for a white Christmas, but alas, we‘ve got green grass and 50 predicted! Yes, this used to be very unusual for Michigan, but not anymore. Regardless, we‘ll enjoy the weather and raise a glass!

Thanks for the tag, @EadieB !

EadieB You‘re welcome! Thanks for playing! 6mo

I read this book back in November, but I wanted to make sure I posted a review. It was fabulous, definitely my favorite of the Kincaid/Gemma series this far. And I‘ve enjoyed them all! But the plot, the writing, the subject matter: very literary, and very well done. Highly recommended. I‘m reading the series in order, and I do recommend that for the progression of the relationship at the heart of the books, but it‘s not integral to the plots.

MittenGirlPeach The leaves are finally gone and so is the snow! For now . . . 7mo

This is a big 👍! An enjoyable mystery with an engaging main character and exceptionally witty dialogue. It‘s my first Martha Grimes, and of course the first of the Richard Jury mysteries. The first book was published in 1981 and the most recent in 2019, so it will be fun to see the series evolve.

My first book down for #DashingDecember! I‘m aiming for five books and at least one bingo.

Sunrise this morning . . .

Started a new series last night, and it immediately sucked me in. That feeling when you get in bed with a new book to read and you love it? So good.

It‘s my #BookSpin too!

Leaves and weather update: the snow is gone, some leaves are *still* hanging on, and Mark may have to wait until Spring to clear up the leaves in middle of the yard. The top and bottom are done, but the warm Fall put the process back. And now it‘s cold. 🤷🏻‍♀️

EvieBee I heart that feeling and it feels more amplified in the winter. Am I right?! 7mo
MittenGirlPeach @EvieBee you are SO RIGHT! It‘s the best feeling. 7mo
