Up early to enjoy cooler air before this day hits its predicted 95 degrees. Sudden jump from low 70s! #coffeesndbooks
I choose this to listen to just because of the sea!Initially I was not sure if I was going to stick with it-not sure I liked Jem,a librarian & the protagonist, but after a couple of chapters I was sucked in.Jem returns to the island she grew up on after running away-a”juvenile delinquent”in the islanders eyes,20 years earlier.I was entertained by the book‘s variety of eccentric characters, rare books, island life,boats-it‘s a complicated, fun whodunit

Early morning coffee. “Time spent reading is never wasted.” Roald Dahl quote from the mug my sister gave me. 📚❤️☕️

182 pages in and I cannot put this down.
#buttercups
I cannot remember when I have seen these in my yard- childhood memories of picking them with my sibs & checking under our chins for that yellow glow. Maybe its because my husband loves dandelions so we did not mow our lawn - it‘s getting mowed today, so I rescued some buttercups.

These came today.I love Meghan O‘Rouke‘s writing, essays, magazine & newspaper articles, her previous book,The Long Goodbye. Her stamina, grace, resolve, her tireless search for heath, her doggedness& determination in challenging the medical establishment leaves me in awe.She is a champion for all of us.

Slept late. Rainy, cloudy day. Time to read.#coffeesndbooks
A well crafted police procedural, with an imaginative, competent, intelligent Swiss officer, Agnes Luthi, who finds herself embroiled in a murder. Lausanne is hosting a premier watch & jewelry trade show. Tensions run high as the traditional watch industry struggles against the new watch conglomerates. Will another murder occur? How involved is the private boys boarding school?Love this series.Sad that there are no more published.#porchlife
Slept lots, walked rectangles in my yard to 3/4 mile cause my body needed it. Not used to being a lay about! On antivirals, cough meds, Tylenol for covid symptoms. Quarantined until Saturday. Beautiful late afternoon, 70 degrees, slight breeze, blue sky with scattered clouds. Bird song,a few cars. In anticipation of opening this book. Love Ann Cleeve‘s books! #porchlife
I am really enjoying this police procedural set in the Swiss land of watchmakers. #porchlife #eveningchimes #AnAgnesLuthiMystery
I love that the protagonist name is Agnes- reminds me of my great aunt Agnes who helped my mom lots when we were growing up. She was deaf but could read lips like a trooper. I don‘t think she ever learned sign language but she could read & write so she got some education. Born in 1886, she died 90+ years later.
Today‘s read. I remember the first in this series as a pick, so when I found this in the library earlier this month, I grabbed it. #libraryfind #AnAgnesLuthiMystery #porchlife
I have been reading one essay at a time, and thoroughly enjoying each one.Her commentaries on her country (Myanmar),her culture, western influences, women, family, laundry(the Myanmar way) are funny, startling, informative, engaging, thought provoking…

Back to Work tomorrow…

I had to finish this today! The ending was just as surprising to me as I expected it would be. No review because I do not want to say anything to spoil our discussion next Sunday.

#DarkIcelandSeries #3 #blackout #NordicNoir
I love this series! The backdrop of Iceland with its snow, its bitter cold, its darkness, its long winter-then spring/summer with its brilliant, radiant light was mesmerizing & held me spellbound.A Classic whodunit, with many voices narrating, some time shifts,& an intricate plot,it felt like a labyrinth to me.All the varying threads did come together in the end. I am so glad their are 3 more in the series!

Reading on my porch- right now it‘s pleasant and cool. My cat Em woke me at 4:30! I could not go back to sleep so I have been busying myself in the house. Time for a reading break on my porch!
Planning to join in this #MarvelousMay #readathon #2

The Deer‘s Cry, one of the oldest Celtic prayers. The poetry of nature and the sublime.
Started this tonight. Brings me back in time to the siege of Sarajevo during the Bosnian War(1992-95). Judy Collins wrote and sang this haunting song:

The first essay,A Me by Any Other Name,is thought provoking. It is a lesson in the common repetition of names in Myanmar culture. The author herself is Pyae Pyae, while her given name is Pyae Moe Thet War. Moe has a connection to her Dad;Thet to her mom.War is from a palm reader, who got the name in the stars. It also explores the pressures she endured in HS to change her name to a Western,English name. She refused, wanting to preserve her culture.

Working on these books this week when I can, depending on work & my mood.
#Irishroots #IrishAmerican #ancestry
The author, a professor of English with a specialty in Irish American studies, & a traditional Irish storyteller or “seanchai”, has written about Ireland, its history, its people, its myths & its ancient traditions. This is a complement to Thomas Cahill‘s earlier book. Each section ends with an annotated bibliography, which I found invaluable.

Local coffee shop in my town that encourages reading, drinking coffee, eating treats.Leisurely midday break.
This week I finished Seasonal Work,The Restoration of Celia Fairchild,&To the Grave.I started the audiobook,The Mystery of Mrs.Christie,& am still slowly reading Orwell‘s Roses. Both Lost Among the Living &This Life are buddy reads. Death in A Budapest Butterfly I plan to read during today‘s road trip to Kingston, NY for the opening soccer game we support, Hartford City Football Club. #hcfc #bookreport #sundaybuddyread #deadphilosopherssociety
I read 1 of the 12 short stories per day- no matter what the story I was continually surprised & at times, astonished at the outcomes. The author wrote these stories over a span of 12 years, & some had been previously published. They were all new to me, & kept me riveted. As the cover flap says better than I can, they are stories of “deception, murder, dangerous games, and love gone wrong.” Highly recommend! #libraryfind
#sundaybuddyread this evening.
Opening this tonight- from my TBR mountains.😀

Reporting my reading:
Night Blind - 240pp, finished.
To the Grave- listened to 15 chapters, now at ch. 31. 31/48 chapters completed.
Seasonsl Work - 184 pp.
An Accidental Corpse,296 pp.Finished.
I read the first in this series, Snowblind, when it was published. This has been in my TBR awhile. Trying to whittle away my stacks. I love the setting, Iceland, and the characters who are shaped by the climate, and winter darkness.
The first sentence: “Unsettling.”
Unfortunately I could not get the Typorama app to align the text to the left, the way this poem is written. I am loving this poetry book @Readergrrl !
For some reason I thought of our buddy read, This Life, when I read this poem. @GingerAntics @ravenlee @TheBookHippie
Two books are buddy reads by week- Lost Among the Living and This Life. The others I plan to read/listen as I can. Full weeks at work until we end in June- parent meetings, graduation activities, exams.
Report as of this morning(Sunday) started the audiobook, To the Grave. On cp 16/49. Finished An Accidental Corpse(296 pages this weekend)and read 184 pgs of Seasonal Work. #20in4 #readathon #MayDaySpecial

Sneaking some reading in before noon. Sunny, but windy so I am on my porch wrapped in a warm poncho. The porch faces north& slightly west, so pictures come out darker than later in the day. I just started putting some porch furniture & do-dads out today.
