So bittersweet- this is the final novel in the fabulous Ruth Galloway series A woman‘s bones are unearthed enclosed in a wall. Her bones turn out to that of a woman missing since 2002. An archaeology Professor & Cathbad,Ruth‘s dear friend & godfather to her daughter are suspects.Cathbad, who suffers from Long Covid, goes missing. Ruth & Nelson join forces to find him.Claustrophobic, dark, riveting scenes make for a tense read.🔽

kspenmoll 🔼 Ruth & Nelson finally confront the depth of the feelings they have for each other.I am sad to say goodbye to such wonderful & complex, eccentric & rich characters. (edited) 4h

1933. A time of political uncertainty. Maisie investigates the murder of Eddie Pettit, renowned for his magical, “horse whisper” effects on horses. She encounters London costermongers(fruit & veg sellers), a powerless W.Churchill, a greedy press baron, - suddenly Eddie‘s murder is part of a pattern of subterfuge on a national scale. How does Eddie‘s death impact this?
Maisie is also struggling with her grief over Maurice‘s death, & the fear🔽

Digging into this today. #bookmail #bookmailisthebestmail

Tamra Enjoy! 🖤 My fav book of the year so far. (edited) 1d
kspenmoll @Tamra That‘s a great endorsement! Years ago right after the siege of Sarajevo,a family was sponsored by a local church. They had 2 boys. I tutored the younger one who had what now I would call PTSD, skittish, jumpy, bewildered-his command of English by the time i worked with him (5th grade) was fairly good. He went on to adjust to our culture & succeeded.🔽 1d
kspenmoll 🔼 his older brother self medicated & ended up selling drugs to support his habit. Eventually he was jailed. Very said. I know all this because a student I supported in my first year of teaching kept in touch, married him & had a child. So heartbreaking. 1d
Tamra @kspenmoll your experience/context will make the book all the better. 😌 1d
jlhammar I thought this was such a good read. So glad you got a copy. Can‘t wait to hear what you think! 1d

The Anchoress | Robyn Cadwallader

#nunlit An extraordinary book, unlike anything I have ever read. Sarah, a teen watched her beloved sister die in childbirth. In her grief, she dedicates her life to Christ, & becomes an Anchoress, living enclosed in a dark, damp stone & wood cell, never to see the light of day. Her story is narrated through her inner life of thoughts & prayer.Only her confessor, female caretakers & village women can speak with her via a small back curtained window.🔽

kspenmoll 🔼 Themes of grief, loss, oppression, intolerance, violence, imprisonment, are interwoven the Catholic Churches hierarchy that demands absolute obedience on every level, are interwoven t in the book. There were times I was enraged, times I felt impatient, times I felt compassion.Medieval life was a time that those in power dictated the social, political, occupational, & religious lives of everyone else. I want to hear from those not raised Catholic. 5d
jlhammar Wonderful review! Yes to all of that. So well said. I liked that we got to experience an anchoress at the end of her life a bit (with Julian of Norwich) in Revelations and here we got some perspective about the beginning. 5d

Dichotomy between heart & head, compassion & a rigid adherence to rules as exemplified in this exchange.Fr Peter the older priest is trying to give counsel to Fr. Ranault, the younger priest who now is the Anchoress‘ confessor & window to the outside world.

This is probably old news to many but as I was catching up on insta,I read the above post from Amanda Gorman.Pen America is suing a FL district:
https://pen.org/press-release/pen-america-files-lawsuit-against-florida-school-d....

Amiable The ignorance surrounding these book bans is astounding. I don‘t even recognize this country anymore. 1w
britt_brooke These people are so DUMB. I swear. 1w
dabbe A similar article from the NYT states this is THE case to follow in the fight against banning books. All it takes these days is ONE person. This person writes “I don't need“ any professional reviews??? And the answer to Q#2 is incoherent. One of our district school board members said she had NOT read the book in question at one meeting but that she trusted whatever the board decided. #WTF If you don't read it, you don't get a say. Period. #grr 1w
See All 7 Comments
kspenmoll @Amiable i totally agree with your astonishment & the fact that this country is non recognizable- that is scary in itself. I worry about what kind of world we are leaving to our children & the high schoolers I teach. @dabbe how can you just blindly follow the Board & feel right about not reading the “ evidence” or book? This is nuts, but it does speak to how powerful books are if some parents/school boards do not want their children reading a book 1w
kspenmoll @britt_brooke Yes, yes, yes! It‘s hard to believe. Can‘t imagine your boys without books! (edited) 1w
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Just checking to see if you received your package 📦 🩷 7d
dabbe @kspenmoll It's nuts and terrifying. Of course, the upside is that when a book is banned, that pretty much seals the deal that every kid will want to read it. If I were still teaching, I would just “slip“ a banned books list the students and just say, “🤷‍♀️ why they were banned.“ Easy for me to say when I don't have to face parents anymore. 😃 6d

I had forgotten how cerebral poet & Scotland Yard‘s finest,Adam Dalgleish, approaches his murder investigations.Initially the pace of the book is slow, with more thought and talk than action.
A brilliant but despicable forensic scientist is murdered in his own lab. There are almost too many possible murderers to count,so Dalgleish has to sift through them one at a time. The climax, and the “whodunit”it took me left me totally astonished!

At B&N today I was told that my teacher card was now defunct - instead I can use their new discount card for free one year. ( usually 40$; Did not pay anything for teacher membership). Apparently it‘s 10% off everything & a free tote. So I treated myself to a few books.📚📚👜

ravenlee I got an email from them a couple months ago explaining the demise of the educator program. My favorite part was when they tried to explain that (after the year freebie) paying $40/year to save 10% on everything is better than paying $0/year to save 20% on what you actually use for teaching is better. So spending more to save less > spending nothing to save more. Makes perfect sense. 3w
