Mehso-so

The women in Amy's family have a rare gift, they see how a relationship ends when they kiss a man for the first time.

On a drunken dare she kisses 3 men. Has 1 good premonition, but can't remember who she kissed. Now she has to find Mr Right.
I really liked the idea of the book, but it was pretty clear to me who Mr Right was from early on. With this mystery angle gone, the story was based on miscommunication; and that trope rarely works for me.

Sara has to fulfill her mother's dying wish, write that 5th book in her bestseller series. Sara knows she can't do it. Why would her mother set her such a task?

Sara has to come to terms with her mother's death, decide whether to write the book, and uncovers a family secret.

Loved the inspirational quotes by different authors at the beginning of each chapter.

Randy, the randy moose trying to hump a trailer.

I've been coughing tea several times today, already. I love Julia Kent's writing.

julesG @GingerAntics perfect antidote to the BDB - I definitely need a break after those first 10.5 books 6d
GingerAntics @julesG so no heteronormative language in this one? No life or death battles for an entire race of creatures… that never bloody ends? 6d
GingerAntics Wait, a Randy Moose? Come again? 6d
julesG @GingerAntics so far only a randy Moose, a chocolates stealing squirrel, poison ivy, small town with hot springs, city slicker trying to buy a small company, grumpy lumberjack hotty - and of course the two have history 6d

Was only going to read this for a few minutes and then come back to it later; I postponed everything and read the book.

It's as predictable as a romance is, but it has snarky banter, flawed characters and lots of literary references.

GingerAntics You poor dear!!! You‘ll need some John and Blay after that ending. 1w
julesG @GingerAntics maybe I binged them too fast. I just wasn't listening properly to what was going on. It's the same old "avoid talking about what's going on" then "some fighting" then "planning a coup" with some "make out sessions" in between. 1w
GingerAntics @julesG lol that‘s fair. The political intrigue doesn‘t happen until The King. This book has some of the best unusual things. Although there are some pretty good arguments between Wrath and Beth. 1w
GingerAntics @julesG the book I‘m on now switched between Wrath and his parents actually. It‘s interesting to see the parallel between the two stories and seeing how our Wrath became who he is and why he became a brother. 1w

📘 Read and review(!) 4 ARCs
📙 Read 1 physical copy off the shelves

@GingerAntics

About 75% in, I have questions. ⬇️

julesG When Butch brings Beth to Wrath, Wrath walks over to the video monitor and looks at who's at the front door. How can he see it? He's nearly blind, said so more than once. He can't sew Rage's wound, can't give him water, can't cut and spear his own food. There are a few other incidents where he looks at something that clearly needs good eyesight. Annoys me so much. 3w
GingerAntics I never noticed that. It‘s possible with his computer monitor it could be on a setting that makes it easier for him to see. It‘s also possible he feels or smells Beth more than sees her and doesn‘t give a crap whose charging into the house with her. Just a thought. 3w
julesG Evidence that I'm much too observant. 🙈🙈🙈 @GingerAntics We can certainly find several explanations for this inconsistency. 😜 And I'm willing to overlook it. 3w
See All 6 Comments
GingerAntics @julesG lol in book 7 (the one I‘m on now) it‘s suggested that adrenaline can give him a temporary boost in eye sight as long as it‘s not too bright. Somehow he‘s “the blind king” but bright light of any kind (even if it doesn‘t effect the rest of him like headlights) makes his eyes hurt. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I‘ve gotten to where the insider‘s guide doesn‘t have any spoilers anymore, so maybe it will explain the quirks of his eyesight a little better. 3w
GingerAntics Okay, Lover Avenged literally just said “fear made his vision fairly clear.” So strong emotions can make his vision better. It‘s official canon. That part made me think of you. lol 3w

The plot was predictable. What I hadn't anticipated: the very serious reason for the male MC's no-show. The main and secondary characters are fleshed out very well.

Heroine has to disguise herself as a man to work as a steward for a Scottish duke, her father is ill and indebted to a moneylender.

The duke, obviously, has to wear a kilt and show of his muscular legs from the start. 🙄

No one suspects the slender steward with the feminine features to be a woman. 🙄

A few plot holes, which are necessary for the story to work, of course. Stereotypes for the Scottish characters 🙄😑

I'm not sure about this one. On the one hand I really liked that the hero was a therapist who gave seminars where men learn how to better support their partners. On the other hand the heroine acted really really dumb because she always FU her relationships.

A few plot holes, a bit slow in parts then rushed in other parts, some really extended sex scenes.

Could have benefited from more editing.

Marriage of Convenience trope.

An okay read, but the first two books in the series were better.

There's little to no character development. Julian is supposed to be treating Emily like an adult, which he is not. Emily is supposed to grow a backbone, which only happens close to the end of the book, and only because her mother criticises Emily's pet AND Julian speaks up on Emily's behalf. 🙄🙄🙄

I got this based on the cover.

It's full of gore, graphic (sexual) violence, cannibalism,...

Not exactly sure what put me off. Maybe that dystopian books with gore and violence aren't what I'd call horror? Maybe it was the writing style?

StaceGhost I agree with this! Violence doesn‘t make a horror novel anymore than a sex scene makes a romance— and too much feels gratuitous! 1mo

squirrelbrain Oh dear! We‘re not doing very well with this one, are we?! 1mo
rockpools 🎶Badaboom… boom… boom… And another one bites the dust 🎶 This one‘s taking a lot of people out, isn‘t it? I‘m on p70, and I suspect there are other retellings I‘d rather be reading. Getting ‘too many words‘ twitchy about it. We‘ll see. 1mo
TrishB I‘m not getting any inspiration to read this! 1mo

julesG @TrishB It's a retelling that's very very close to the original source. There's absolutely nothing new here. Ariadne is a wet blanket, and I am still wondering whether the "feminist debut" part of the book actually just refers to the sex of the author. 1mo
julesG @rockpools @squirrelbrain I don't understand why so many people gave this 4 or 5 star reviews. 1mo
squirrelbrain @rockpools 🤣 Love your comment! (And the singing of course!) 1mo
rockpools @squirrelbrain Bet you‘re glad the singing‘s text-based! And no, @julesG, I‘m really not getting 5star or particularly feminist vibes from this. Ho hum. 1mo
Leniverse Starting to wonder if I should even bother. 😕 1mo
Caroline2 Yeah, the sexism really wound me up in the end! 🤬 1mo
Oryx Well I'm glad it wasn't just me. It seemed to have good reviews elsewhere, but it was pretty terrible... I think jumping on the Circe bandwagon, but without any nuance. 1mo
julesG @Oryx That's what I thought, too. Circe was miles better 1mo

Pickpick

The audiobook (in German) was good. I liked the narrator.

I liked Elizabeth Zott's story. Yes, there is only minor character development, but I enjoyed the whole story too much to be bothered by this.

Now I can't wait to read the English edition.

Andrew65 Sounds good. Well done 👏👏👏 1mo
squirrelbrain Glad you liked it! 1mo

julesG @squirrelbrain A few mistranslations of chemistry and laboratory related words. That was to be expected. 1mo
squirrelbrain Of course, and you would spot them! 1mo
julesG @squirrelbrain English for Chemists was how I earned my bread and butter for ten years 😬 1mo
