All Charlie wants is a loan to buy the pub down the road. When his estranged rich uncle dies, Charlie hopes for an inheritance that could help him achieve his goal. Instead he leaves his supervillain business to Charlie, including the war with a cabal of other supervillains.

Great fun. I loved the tech-savvy cats, the rude dolphins, the villainous assistant, and Charlie learning to be a villain himself.

#TitlesAndTunes #DramaQueen

I recently received the #ARC from #NetGalley and thought it was maybe appropriate for this month's topic. The title made me think of road trips and that reminded me that, long before I first read Good Omens, we used to listen to Queen's Greatest Hits (on a cassette tape) when on family trips (now I feel ancient). Anyway, my favourite back then was Don't Stop Me Now (link in comments)

The Daily Doctor was supposed to be published last year in September, but was pushed back to August 2023. One of my longest standing pre-order ever.

Came across Mother Tongue by accident and I can't wait to read it (let's not start kidding ourselves, it's going to live on #MountTBR for a while first).

ravenlee “Awesome! I‘m so happy this book arrived I‘ve been dying to read it I can‘t wait to start it” as I put it on the to-read-soon-but-we-all-know-it‘s-eventually shelf so that in a few months (or years) I can pick it up and say “Awesome! Third Matthew Venn book did not disappoint. A missing celebrity who came to the village a few weeks ago. A Raging Storm that hinders the investigation in a close-knit community.

Beverly thinks everyone is judging her. She has one friend, the homeless alcoholic Bill. And when Henry asks her out to dinner, while she's reading "Carrie", she thinks it's a prank that might involve litres of blood.

A story about mental illness, loss, grief, attempted suicide, attempted murder, but also about recovery.

It was weird being in Beverly's head. I wanted to bail several times, but I'm glad I stuck it out.

The ultimate locked room mystery. A five star hotel on Moon. Ten lucky winners are the first guests. Strangely there's no staff. And then the murders started.

Unfortunately the author didn't make full use of the setting; there's no evil AI, no low gravity related problems. And how did they ship all the luxury stuff to the Moon?

All characters sounded very similar despite the narrator giving each of them individual voices.

Paired my signed copy with the #ALC from #NetGalley.

Late 19th century. Set in Bristol. Magicians, early moving pictures, séances, found family, betrayals, and a show with a grand final. Likeable and 'authentic' characters.

The narration was good. I had to crank it to 2.25x though to roughly match my reading speed.

julesG Here we are, the last Discworld adventure. Like the final episode of a long running TV series it brought a lot of the Discworld characters together again. I'm glad I chose the audiobook, I know I would have put off finishing the novel in print format. 3w
willaful Definitely a bittersweet read. I read that P. had stopped including Death as a character after his diagnosis so his return has a lot of symbolic weight.

I tend to really dislike the Elf books because I don't read Pratchett for depictions of evil, but it was nice that there was movement on Elf humanization, even if it ended really sadly.

Simeon, young doctor in Victorian London, is visiting a distant cousin who's had health problems for a few days. The cousin lives in Turnglass House on a small remote island off the coast of Essex. He's warden to his sister-in-law, who killed her husband in a flash of rage and it was house arrest or Bedlam.

Simeon wants to help the cousin, as well as the imprisoned Florence. But how, when no one wants to tell him ⬇️

julesG ...what happened. And what does this all have to do with the "futuristic" novella Florence pointed him to? Slowly the story unravels and: ends with a cliffhanger, because the ARC was only the first part of the book. ⬇️ 3w
julesG Really liked this first part of the book. The setting of the remote island, the tight-knit group of islanders who won't give away their secrets fearing Simeon might sell them out. The slow reveal of why Florence accidentally murdered her husband, and, more importantly, why and how she ended up being trapped in her rooms. It was all exactly what I had hoped for in this book. Likeable and unlikable characters, a murder with a twist (saw it coming ⬇️ 3w

DNF @13%

It's not YA, but it reads like YA.

Ash (Cinderella) is a con-artist. She's managed to ensnare the prince with her charm and (!) strong magic. Her step-mother trained her for this all her life. Now she's in the palace to do something or other in the weeks leading up to the royal wedding.

First person POV. Lots of words. So many empty words. (please imagine me saying this like Mrs Bennett complaining about her nerves)

1/?

julesG Motive? Why is Ash doing this? I'm fine with slow reveals but this is no reveal, not a single solid hint at why(!) Ash is doing this con.

World-building? I cannot imagine this world. Not enough information. And I can only presume so much from lace bodices on ballgowns and men wearing suits and ties. Princes, paupers, skullery maids, carriages,...

2/?
3w
julesG Magic system? How does the magic work? Furthermore, dear Ash, why use magic in the first place? You've been trained to dazzle, you shouldn't need drugs, erm sorry Magic, to charm the prince.

And the final nail in the coffin: I can smell the sweet stench of a love-triangle. Apropos sweet stench, why call the other guy "Rance" that's so disgustingly close to rancid. I kept imagining him enveloped in a cloud of BO. 3/3

I think my funny bone is broken. I found this #RomCom not very funny.

A blonde woman lies in the streets of Paris, she doesn't remember who she is. A group of Russian mobsters is behind her because she's stolen a MacGuffin and the most gorgeous man in the world just told her to run.

Is she a spy? That's what the TV news say. But why can't she fell a goon when she's in a pickle? Does her muscle memory have amnesia too?

⬇️

julesG "Her" has to find herself and "Him" is helping, or is he using her to get to the MacGuffin?

Several spy and action films are mentioned throughout the book and the book reads like an action film. I found it difficult to connect with the two MCs, but on the whole the story was entertaining. The epilogue might hint at a sequel.

Panpan

So slow. So dragging.

And the giant "racism/sexism" mallet with which the author hammered her message home from the start.

Ugh!

I was doing so well... I was down to "only" 117 ARCs. Well, I reviewed and then requested and then...

Was just approved the three books above. So from #RushAThon start with 123 ARCs I'm currently at 129 ARCs. Guess my #ARCaDayAugust is a success.

Haven't done a #Two4Tuesday @TheSpineView

Thanks for the tag, @The_Penniless_Author

1) no, and I'm not sure I'd want any. But had I jumped on that bandwagon earlier 🤔🤔🤔 I have a few teeny tiny bits of gold that I panned from a river years ago, they must be worth a few cents. 🤣🤣

2) Shopping for a Billionaire series (tagged is the first book in the series) - 🤣🌶️💘

Want to play? @rockpools @ozma.of.oz @CarolynM

TheSpineView Never been panning for gold bit sounds like fun! Thanks for playing 1mo
julesG @TheSpineView The area where I come from has interesting natural resources. Apart from a bit of silver and gold there's lots of uranium (luckily not the enriched/dangerous stuff). Gold panning is a tourist thing, which needs explaining and hence perfect for a summer job. 😉 Unfortunately not enough gold in the small rivers to get rich. 1mo
rockpools Your tagged book sounds really fun! And panning for gold is way more exciting than Bitcoin! I must have read something amazing with a rich MC - but all I can think of right now is Pride and Prejudice, which is obviously great, but not remotely original. 1mo
julesG @rockpools It was original when it was first published. And it might be the inspiration for lots of contemporary romances 1mo

Pickpick

Wallflower Miranda fell in love with Turner ten years ago.

Burnt by his first marriage, Turner is determined to avoid love and another marriage, but why should his younger brother gain Miranda's hand. Or any other man of the 'ton'?

My last #audiobook (The Secret Diaries... ) and my current audiobook are narrated by the same person. I did not notice until I was about half an hour into "Sorcerer" ??‍♀️

Amazing artwork! Each chapter is named after a colour of the rainbow and the panels are tinged in this colour.

Hayden loves sciences, especially the science that's behind rainbows. There's a chance meeting with Isaac Newton, and a bit of magical realism.
