The granary buildings have been repurposed and now offer office space, a boulder centre, art studios,...

Hour 3 of #24B4Monday is all about research. Want to know what all I can do with the herbs on my balcony.

@TheReadingMermaid @Andrew65

squirrelbrain How interesting! 🌷 🌱 (edited) 8h
TheReadingMermaid That Scott Cunningham book is really awesome! He has an aromatherapy one as well. 👍😃👍 5h
julesG @TheReadingMermaid I've had the Cunningham for ages, but only today thought of checking it for certain herbs. Alas the index is not very specific on individual herbs. 4h
See All 7 Comments
TheReadingMermaid What exactly are you looking to do? I'm sure I have a book on it or if not I can recommend one. I'd be happy to help. 4h
julesG @TheReadingMermaid Thanks for the offer. I was looking for information on uses of Lemon Balm other than tea. My plant is doing really well this year. 😉 But, I just learned that although Lemon Balm has many health benefits, people with an underactive thyroid should use it sparsely. That would be me. 😔 Anyway, I'll make a macerated oil that I can use topically and maybe an alcoholic infusion. 4h
TheReadingMermaid That would be my suggestion. I would also suggest using a diluting agent such as almond oil or olive oil in order to use it topically. you still get all the benefits but it is diluted to where it will not hurt you. 2h
Andrew65 A great use of the Readathon. 😊👍 11m

At 84%!!! Beforehand the lady herself referred to her 16th/17th century clothing as medieval.

Honestly, I think this book wasn't ready for publication yet when it was published late last year.

julesG @Birdsong28 Way too late. Should have stated this in the beginning. ? Wish I could get my money back. There should be a satisfaction guarantee with "over-priced" ebooks. 9h
Birdsong28 @julesG You can return ebooks on Amazon. You can ask them through the customer service option. But yeh they should come with a satisfaction rating. I only get ebooks if they are either free or £2.99 or less or through Netgalley. 📚📖 9h
julesG @Birdsong28 I got book 2 in the series through NetGalley and thought I should read the first. Trustworthy Littens had given it pick ratings, so I was willing to spend the 15€. Not even sure I can give it back, Germany has some strange rules. I'd better check with amazon 8h

1) getting this corner behind the lavender planter sorted made me happy this week. I had wanted to do it for at least a year. Also, my herb "garden" is thriving, rocket is growing next to my lemon balm (had not planned this, but it's cool).

#BFC @wanderinglynn

Check in for week two, at start of week 3. 😉

Although it might look like I didn't reach all my goal, I did. I forgot my fitbit in the charger one morning. And although I guesstimated the distance I walked and added those steps to my daily count, fitbit does not offer to add floors. So, there are 9 floors missing in my fitbit stats. Anyway, motivation to a) remember to pack the fitbit and b) walk even more stairs.

Dear @Smarkies, your slightly battered #SummerSantaGoesPostal package has just arrived, I only needed to run after my post man for half a block (I had just missed him and thought it was easier trying to catch him than having to go to the post office in town tomorrow).

Just for my peace of mind I looked up when the Middle Ages were. I knew, but the reference to "medieval" clothes in the Little Shop of Found Things made me wonder. But, nope, 1605 definitely isn't Middle Ages - it's Tudor or Stuart or Renaissance, but not MA.

Here's a time line for the MA in 3.5 minutes by the author of the tagged book: https://youtu.be/6EAMqKUimr8

Pic shows clothing late 16th and early 17th century

Velvetfur Love this! I love the medieval look, I'll have a look at the link too, thanks for posting 😁 3d
Birdsong28 1605 is the Stuart Era. 📚📖 3d
See All 22 Comments
julesG @Birdsong28 oh, yes, you are right. It was James I on the throne. Anyway, the style of clothes definitely wasn't medieval. 3d
Birdsong28 @julesG Definitely! Some authors just think medieval is just a quick cover all description for anything around that time. 😁📚📖 3d
julesG @Birdsong28 It's just so disjointed, the main character is an antiques dealer, she knows about clocks, furniture, chatelains,... Can distinguish between different periods, but describes the clothing as medieval? Brackston, the author, put a lot of effort into so many aspects, but falls short in this department. And we all know, it's the little things that can destroy the rapport between novel and reader. 2d
TrishB Can‘t watch you tube as in work, I generally take 1485 and the start of the Tudors as the end of the MA. 2d
julesG @TrishB That's about the date. Lots of historians say Renaissance started with Da Vinci and that puts it at the end of the 1400s. 2d
Emilymdxn My degree in (broadly) Medieval English ended in 1550 and I thought of that as a ‘latest possible‘ date for the end of the Middle Ages tho obvs defining time periods strictly is hard. There‘s an argument to be made for including early Tudor in medieval as the long fifteenth century but I definitely wouldn‘t include the later Tudors or Stuarts by any means! The reformation is my personal cut off for England, earlier in other countries (edited) 2d
julesG @Emilymdxn Sums up what I've learned. I studied medieval history, too. Though from a German perspective. 2d
Emilymdxn @julesG that sounds really cool! I‘d love to have got to do more on the Middle Ages in other countries, I didn‘t get to do Germany at all really 2d
julesG @Emilymdxn I was lucky, I guess. We had a great Prof of medieval history who did a lot on European history of the MA, Christianisation etc. And I learned a lot about British history through my English cultural studies. 2d
GingerAntics Oh my god this is not that had. Get away from that book as quickly as possible. Middle Ages were over by 1400 seriously people!!! #whyhistorymatters 🙄 I swear I will hurt someone. (Not really, but you know me.) 2d
JazzFeathers I agree with @GingerAntics l'd considered 1400 already Renaissance, although l understand that today historians tend to consider the ME as a 1000 year long periode, and so some of them include nearly the entirty of the 1400. But the 1500s? Definitely Renaissance for me. And the 1600s is most certainly beyond that. 1d
JazzFeathers @julesG Yes, details are devilish. Sometimes we authors take things for granted and so we make an historical situation the same as our own time's situation. Some other we think that a detail in a line of dialogue is not so important to look deeper into it. Very easy to fall into this trap. But this way we betray both the story and our readers. 1d
julesG @JazzFeathers Just one of the reasons I don't want to publish my writing, I'm too afraid of mistakes that I made and letting someone down. 😉 - - - ah well, I'm going to write to the publishers once I've finished. Not to mention an honest review on Goodreads 1d
julesG @JazzFeathers It's very interesting to see where everyone here draws the line between MA, Renaissance and Modern History. I learned that the MA were definitely over with the fall of Constantinople in 1453, Renaissance lasted (depending on the POV) from 1400 to 1600. And early modern history ended with the age of revolutions, latest with the French Revolution. But it's all intermingled and the lines are blurry with lots of different influences. 1d
julesG @JazzFeathers Since part of my university training was on linguistics, especially the etymology and history of the English language, so it always bugs me when time travellers to say "Shakespearean" times can talk to people of that time with no problems, just a bit of tweaking to the vocabulary. ??? 1d
JazzFeathers @julesG don't let that hinder you. We all do our best, and when someone calls us out on something, that's an opportunity to learn. I learned a lot by sharing my writing and even more by publishing it 😊 1d
JazzFeathers @julesG What l've learn in the last years - and has actually surprised me - is that contrary to what one may think, history is not set in stone. Our understanding of it is alway changing. New discoveries are made, new ways to connect different times are developed. History IS a living thing. This said, inaccuracy IS a real thing and we're better learn to recognise it. 1d
julesG @JazzFeathers Thanks! Wise words, in both your last comments. 1d
GingerAntics I agree with @JazzFeathers, eras do tend to overlap by 100 years or so because it‘s not like everyone wakes up one day and says “alright, we‘re in a new era now, we‘re doing this now.” So there is over lap, but the overlap between Renaissance and Medieval was the 1300s. The next overlap is the 1600s which is why Shakespeare can be considered late Renaissance or early Early Modern. He‘s really straddling the line. 1d

To all new Littens out there. Litsy created two new accounts to help you find accounts to follow.
Click on @TheBestofLitsy and @BestOfLitsy to get to them.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Hmmm I agree, Interesting! 3d
LibrarianRyan interesting 3d

RaimeyGallant Cool beans. 3d
TheBestofLitsy 1/ I'll explain, shall I?

We've been struggling with sign-ups. 90-95% of new users never post. Most never follow anyone. They get Litsy, go through sign up and just BAIL!

As an experiment, we now auto-follow an account on sign-up. Following that account sub-follows about a dozen others. Thus, everyone gets something to look at when they sign up, unless the manually de-follow it.
TheBestofLitsy 2/ Why are there two accounts? Well, to try out different theories about what sort of auto-following works best, bringing new members into the site and using it. In tech terms, the two accounts are an A|B test. Half of members get A, half get B. Are these accounts really following the “best“? I dunno. What's best? But we hope at least to give new people something to follow, and pick a combination of accounts that will get them interested. 3d
TheBestofLitsy 3/ What differentiates the two accounts? I will not tell you. It recently changed, actually--which is why some of you got followed. We tried two theories out A and B, and A was better. Now we're trying C against A. 3d
TheBestofLitsy 4/ The other thing going on, though, is that we now have a technical way to follow multiple accounts through one account. That might prove useful in the future. Or, with some changes, it might be how we can effect following a book, an author or a hashtag. 3d
julesG @TheBestofLitsy Thanks for explaining! 3d
BarbaraBB @TheBestofLitsy You‘re really investing in Litsy, thank you for that! 3d

Already spotted a grammar mistake and an inconsistency of facts (who told who, what and when), and a tiny thing that bugs me - time travelling to the year 1605 with 17th century folklore information 😕, I'd go for late 16th century information. But, I am a stickler.

Is this a reason for a #HistoricalFictionInaccuracyAnnoyanceSupportGroup meeting?

Also, why oh why can't they edit books properly?

Birdsong28 @julesG Please can I join? 🙋😘📚📖 I once sent a email to a publisher about some dates that weren't right in a book I read from the library, then realised I had got another book by this author that I had bought and am reluctant to read it as I don't want to read wrong dates/information again. 3d
RavenLovelyReads I want in! 🙋🏻‍♀️ 3d
julesG @RavenLovelyReads @Birdsong28 The more, the merrier. 3d
GingerAntics 🤦🏼‍♀️ 3d
GingerAntics This is absolutely a good call for a meeting. Welcome everyone!!! 3d
JazzFeathers Did l hear meeting about historical inaccuracy? Here l go! 3d
julesG @JazzFeathers @GingerAntics @RavenLovelyReads @Birdsong28 @KCorter — it's not a case of inaccuracy YET. I was just wondering, if you knew exactly what day+month+year you are time travelling back to in the past, why prepare using info on the whole century ahead instead of the last 20 to 50 years? 3d
RaimeyGallant That's so rong. 3d
julesG @RaimeyGallant They could have got it wright. 😁 3d
RaimeyGallant Your always wright. 3d
GingerAntics What do you need all that info for? That‘s not right. 3d
CoverToCoverGirl Ouch... that is wholly unacceptable! And I‘d like to join your group too! 😎 3d
julesG @GingerAntics It's good to know what you're about to head into, but I would have gone for local information on the area, the year prior to my "destination" and so on. 3d
Weaponxgirl Ouch! 2d
GingerAntics Right? You need very specific information and there is no reason not to have it if you know the exact year you‘re going to. If all you have is a general knowledge of when you‘re going to, then yeah, but specific year, get specific with your info, too. 2d
julesG @GingerAntics She knows date and place, knows who she has to meet,... She could have got soooo much information. At 66% she noticed she should have looked up a few things. *face-palm* I paid 15€ for the book, I need to finish it. But I feel ripped off and I will say so in my review. 2d
GingerAntics Ouch, that‘s a lot. I certainly would add that to the review. That is just wrong. It took her that long to figure out she should have looked up some things? Then she‘s also an idiot. Eh. 2d
julesG @GingerAntics can't all be like us. 👿 2d
GingerAntics I suppose. Maybe people should be, though. 2d

1) making my own decisions
2) being responsible for the choices I made
3) not being responsible, dreaming big, the innocence
4) working the night shift in a glassware factory, in summer, close to the kiln -- I was feeling cold in the summer heat that year
5) Trust in yourself. You can do it. - - - not especially advice for adults only, but it was given to me in my early twenties.

Need to look up my recent followers.

My #BFC #audiobook companion this week was the tagged book.

It was good, not 5 stars, but solid 4 stars.

Victor and Eli, roommates at college, start researching EOs (extra-ordinary human beings). This research leads them to finding a way to create EOs, and -of course- both become human beings with superpowers.
Does their superpower make them heroes or villains? Are they using their power for good or evil?

Bit Flatliners meets Fantastic Four.👇

julesG Tagging @wanderinglynn - because there was no character left in my post. 😁 1w
julesG PS: should my secret summer Santa now start tearing out their hair, because this was (maybe) on my wishlist, don't fret, I would still like a "hardcopy" of the book. 1w

#wondrouswednesday @Eggs

1) the epigenetics revolution
2+3) the last was How Not to Give a F*ck, it was a bit repetitive, I could figure out how it works from the flow chart in one of the first chapters
4) There are two books I started before having children, so 14+ years - - on the other hand, they are probably a bail, but until I discovered Litsy I thought I had to finish every book I had started. Now I know it's okay to bail.
5) @nelehelen

Deifio I used to try to finish every book, too! Now I feel like my free time is too valuable to waste on books I don't enjoy. 😘 1w
Eggs I‘m intrigued by epigenetics... 1w
Eggs I can relate to the “book-finishing “ concept 1w
nelehelen Same! I used to always finish books.. i actually still kinda do. I need to stop doing that haha. Thanks for the tag!! 1w

Had to read this passage several times, for real.

The book that's mentioned here is the one I revised the German translation of 14 years ago. Wow! I can't believe it made its way into a popular work of fiction. Not that it doesn't deserve mentioning, it just feels odd seeing it in a novel. So far I've only found it mentioned in non-fiction.

Male cub attends a chess tournament. We may not watch. 😔 But we may wait in a stuffy room with lots of chairs.

Just one more hour, or so. I'm ready while the female cub is playing outside.

GingerAntics Why can‘t you watch your kids play chess? That seems a bit much. 2w
julesG @GingerAntics It's 100 kids playing. If all the parents were in there, as well as accompanying younger siblings, it would just be too loud. So, I'm waiting and reading. 2w
GingerAntics Oh that makes sense. Yeah, that would be a lot of people. I could definitely see not wanting younger siblings in the room, too. They may not understand the need to be quiet. 2w
See All 13 Comments
LibrarianRyan Interesting. But I do love a good chess club even though I can‘t play. 2w
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Ug. Been there! 2w
GingerAntics Still waiting? 2w
minkyb Always lots of waiting for the kiddos! 2w
julesG @GingerAntics Prizes were handed out at around 9pm. We were home by 9.30pm, then dinner. Prize ceremony was scheduled at 7.30pm. Unbelievable! There were kids under the age of 7, playing the tournament. They need to be better organised. 2w
GingerAntics Wow, that‘s really late for young kids. Sheesh. Something clearly went terribly wrong. 2w
julesG @GingerAntics They were expecting about 40 participants, not 100. So, more tables and chess sets needed to be set up. Calculating points and who's playing who took longer, as well as telling who's playing who. I'd organise it differently, but I'm a mother and have to be organised and efficient. 👿 2w
GingerAntics How did they anticipate so completely wrong? 2w
julesG @GingerAntics Some school teams brought more players than they originally pledged. Some school teams showed up unannounced, which they allow (face palm). Not sure where the two men who organised it went wrong. Let me just say one word that explains it all: Men! 2w
GingerAntics 🤣😂🤣 yup, that explains it. That would never happen here. If you said you were bringing X number of players and you showed up with more, you‘d have to pick X number of the players you brought to compete. You can‘t just show up unannounced here, either. Hell, parents wouldn‘t let their kids go with a team that wasn‘t registered to go in the first place. That is crazy. 2w

Having tea now and checking my Fitbit Vernal Falls solo-adventure stats. Some people might manage 9.600 steps in one day, it took me two and a bit, but I'm proud of myself. I could be sitting on the sofa instead.

BethM Way to go! 2w
Heideschrampf Well done. Whats the idea behind the landscape setting? Is the amount of steps equal to a nature hike? 2w
julesG @Heideschrampf It's a 15.000 steps trail through Yosemite. I can do it in my own time, doesn't matter whether I do it in one day or ten. It's a personal challenge. Every few thousand steps you can unlock a picture of a sight on the trail. My 9.600 was the bridge. 2w

#wondrouswednesday @Eggs

1) believability and editing - honestly, a fiction, no matter what genre, should have a believable plot and characters, and good editing. I find the tiniest inconsistencies and inaccuracies in books and they annoy me. I've bailed on books for their stupid mistakes, no matter how endearing the characters were.
2) mugs, bookmarks, fountain pens,...
3) not really, but I like the tagged
