I've started and am already 5 chapters in. 😬 Blame it on the warm summer morning and me sitting outside with nothing else to do. It reads fast. Especially since I've snagged the #audiobook from the library - for pronunciation.

@Leniverse - it was weird. And a bit epic. And meandering. And I'm not sure I understood it all.

Low pick.

Leniverse That kinda sounds like my kind of book 😂 Not sure about the meandering part though. 23h
julesG @Leniverse more tangents than meandering. It could be a good fit for you. 23h
Leniverse Sounds good. Glad this is one of the ones available at the library. 22h
julesG @Leniverse 👏👏 if I had to compare it to any other weird book I've read than the tagged. But Saint is fantasy, Skyward Inn is more Sci-Fi 22h

A Hayden player, of the only league game Haydens can play, is killed during a game - it cannot have been the deliberate decapitation of his Threep. Chris and Vance start to investigate and in true fashion Chris soon needs a new Threep.

- new book and notebook thanks to my son
- made progress on my knitting project
- bought vodka, I'd like to say @squirrelbrain made me do it, but she just pointed out that it's now available in Germany through Amazon
- tomatoes and feta cheese in the air fryer. this became the base of a delicious pasta dish
- rocket in a coconut, I'm growing microgreens. Exposed them to light 2h ago and they are turning green - magic!

Tricky #wondrouswednesday @Eggs

1) spoiled ending, better than an eternal cliffhanger

2) favourite character - I have the feeling I know them better than the author

3) both! - if I have to choose, the mystery novel. I love puzzles.

4) both! - but I'd probably choose SF, I could go to space, meet aliens, see different planets

5) depends on the series, but in most cases you can catch up if you missed the first book. See answer 1, except for⬇️

julesG Sookie Stackhouse. That last book was not necessary and ruined far more than it answered. 4d
Eggs Thanks for the thoughtful responses 🦋 4d
SilversReviews 1. I definitely would prefer a spoiled ending. 2. Meet a favorite character. 3. Be trapped inside a mystery - just not a murder mystery. 4. Definitely not a science fiction book, but in a book that has “nice” history. 😃 5. I don‘t read series books, but probably miss the first one 2d

Included the short story/novella Unlocked.

This was published in 2014, but gets pretty close to our lived experience of Covid-19.

Also, the crime novel part reminded me of Scalzi's The Dispatcher trilogy (btw, narrated by Zach Quinto).

I have the second book, Head On, already queued up.

The TransSib but different. Between Beijing and Moscow the TransSib rail goes through a Wasteland of miracles. These miracles could harm the passengers that's why the train is impenetrable and doesn't stop. But this time the mix of First and Third Class passengers is different, and the train is said to no longer be safe. Secrets unravel on the 23 day journey that might change the passengers' lives for ever if they make it to Moscow at all.

rabbitprincess This sounds really neat! Added to my TBR list 😄 1w
Fr3NcHtOaSt The way you described it I instantly thought of Snowpiercer 1w
julesG @Fr3NcHtOaSt It's not. The only people living on this train longterm are some of the staff. Food is not sourced from within the train. People can alight in Beijing or Moscow - just not in between, because of the Wastelands, which might be dangerous. 1w

Book 250/250 🥳🥳

Diverse cast of characters - reminded me of Becky Chambers' Wayfarers and Martha Wells' Murderbot. The Stardust Grail must be found to save at least one civilisation and keep the different corners of the universe connected. Maya, a 31 year old PhD student of xeno-anthropology with Japanese roots and a decade of experience in stealing alien art, teams up with an ancient alien she calls Uncle (who looks like a potato... ⬇️

I give up. Took me 11 days to get to 48%. The book is supposed to have 352pp, but I'm certain I've read more than 600pp already. I liked the GN, but I'm no fan of all the tangents, different POVs and endless dialogue (just an example, more than half a page of talking about how reinforced a particular door is - on my Kindle, with the font size setting on the smallest font possible).

This might be a good novel, but I don't have the patience.

julesG Well, if the UU has to send a wizard abroad, it has to be Rincewind. Who else is going to bungle around and accidentally save the day? I loved the Luggage finding a mate and making small luggage. And I found the Silver Horde amusing and annoying at the same time. 2w
See All 8 Comments
BookWrym Seeing recurring themes in the Rincewind novels the Greek like gods, fate and of course Rincewind just being a force of chaos. I really liked the Horde and the fact that wheelchair bound or deaf nothing gets in the way of a good fight. Also liked their observations about how uncivilised civilisation is what with poisoning and torture and saying things you don‘t mean. 2w
BarbaraJean @julesG I loved the Luggage offspring as well! I enjoyed the fact that there was more going on here beyond just the jokey bits. @BookWyrm Yes, I enjoyed the observations on “civilization“ as well! There was also some good commentary on the use of power, and the impact of a “revolution“... especially when the people you're fighting for haven't even been consulted. 2w
willaful @BarbaraJean Yes, I felt this had more social commentary than the previous Rincewind books and subsequently was more interesting.

I'd like to know how everything came out. How did Cohen wind up at the Troll Bridge? Was the luggage forever free and just a family bag? 😁
2w
julesG @willaful Can't remember about Cohen, but I'm sure we'll find out about the luggage in Last Continent. 2w
kwmg40 I enjoyed the social commentary and satirical elements of Interesting Times, but the subplot with The Luggage was the best! The scenes with the Silver Horde were fun too. I also liked Troll Bridge, especially the ending. 2w

the book of elsewhere by Reeves and Miéville. Based on Reeves' Graphic Novels BRZRKR. Definitely weird fiction or weird fantasy/Sci-fi. The writing is good, but it drags on.

The Hungry Dark by Jen Williams (not @jenniferw88 😉) - I'm only finishing because I'm already past 60% and want to know whether my hunch about who and why is right. I'm skimming though.

TrishB I‘ve got the Keanu one on preorder but I‘m not sure it‘s for me… 2w
julesG @TrishB I'm not sure it's for me either. It's not exactly epic, it's just branching off into different POVs. Some reviews say this branching off is a feature and when you stick to the story, it'll all come together nicely in the end. Other reviews say it's definitely a bug not a feature. I'm still undecided but leaning towards "bug" - as in: it's bugging me. 2w

Small town in Georgia, the usual biases (definitely not found just in the south). When Lula Dean can't ban baby-yoga (indoctrination into Hinduism), her latest target is books. A committee is formed and books are banned from the library shelves. A LFL is set up in front of Lula's house, stocked with books approved by her. In most cases I only stumble across a series around the publication of its second or third book, or in rare cases around the time book 12 was published. But there are a few series I've read from book one (sometimes as ARCs) and have had to wait for the next instalment impatiently.

Duologies or Trilogies that were blown up and then divided for marketing reasons often read like it and I don't finish them.

kspenmoll I start without regard to whether it‘s a complete series. I enjoy waiting for the next in series ( ex Louise Penny) I am avoiding reading the last Maisie Dobbs as I am sad it is the end of the series. Other series (Maigret) I can read without regard to order. 3w

No 8 in the Lady Sherlock Series

#SeriesLove2024 @TheSpineView @Andrew65

Enjoyed spending time with Charlotte, Mrs Watson, Ash,..

One teeny tiny pet peeve: the characters are British/European, they'd use the Celsius temperature scale. Mrs Watson remarking on the London day with "temperatures in the sixties" took me out of the narrative for a long moment.

Sace When does the book take place? I think the UK started using metric a little late? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metrication_in_the_United_Kingdom (I did a lazy google search) 3w
TheSpineView Great job! 3w
julesG @Sace starts in August 1887 3w
See All 9 Comments
julesG @Sace okay, I've checked the archive of the London Evening Standard and the weather forecast used Fahrenheit. It still feels weird, especially since records are in Celsius. 3w
Sace @julesG I can see how it‘s weird. Being in the US I wouldn‘t have even noticed. The only reason I googled is because growing up I had always heard our measurements referred to as “British” (and sometimes “Imperial”) so I figured they were probably a little unwilling to give up their own measurement system 😂 3w
humouress UK changed to SI units in the 60s/ 70s. Not that I was around but I do remember some practice questions being in pounds, shillings and pence which were pre-decimalisation units. If only we had 12 fingers; base 12 is easier to do sums with. It's all them Romans' fault. 3w
julesG @humouress I knew that weights and measurements and money changed to SI system. I just, somehow, assumed the UK had used the Celsius scale from its inception. I'm basing that assumption on my having studied temperature charts from the 1600s onwards that used Celsius. Yes, I know the Centigrade scale wasn't around that early and those average temperatures are based on guesstimations based on weather observations. I've learned something new today. 3w
julesG I'm actually mainly embarrassed that I made this assumption in the first place. I could have had a look at newspaper archives and checked. 🙄🙄🙄 Rolling my eyes at mys3 3w

Wyatt and Biz have been a couple for quite some time. At the beginning of the book their relationship has hit a rough patch, despite this the two of them decide to have a child together via surrogacy. Fast forward to over a year later, the two still haven‘t repaired their relationship, but are embarking on a road trip from New York to California to be present at their child‘s birth.

⬇️

julesG The novel seems to be perfect for Pride Month. I just didn‘t like that the relationship problems of the two MCs were built on miscommunication and problems with their wider family. Not to mention that having a child is no way to fix a relationship.

This story might actually work better as a film than a novel.

Another good instalment in the Mercy Thompson series.

Set around the winter solstice, in the mountains, during a snow storm = perfect summer reading. 😉

This Friends-To-Lovers romance reminded me of "Romancing Mister Bridgerton". A friend, in this case Lady Selina, is trying to help Lord Peter to find a suitable wife. He needs a respectable wife, because he wants to gain guardianship of his siblings and knows the judge presiding over his case has a grudge against him. By the time this book is set, Selina and Peter have known each ⬇️

julesG other for several years and there already is a lot of chemistry between them. I would have loved to see more of their encounters from the beginning of their friendship, their earlier chemistry. Still, Selina is adamant that one of the three ladies she picked for Peter would be much better suited than herself; she's hiding a huge secret from the 'ton' (yes, Lady Whistledown huge).⬇️ 3w
julesG I liked the two MCs, they felt fully fleshed out. The reasons for their actions and also for Selina's secret are well-explained and made sense to me. The reader gets to see them realising their feelings for each other, the complications and how they overcome them. (Again, it has parallels to Romancing Mr Bridgerton - or maybe I just drew them since I recently re-read the book and watched the show.)⬇️ 3w
julesG The secondary characters were great. I really want to know more about the individual quirks of the other three ladies and see them find their matches. And any sequel needs more Lu and Freddie, as well as aunt Judith and Thomasina. 3w

A supposedly spooky Brontë-esque story.

I think it would have worked better with any no-name family rather than the the Brontës.

Do not expect Brontë-esque prose either.

Published already.

Unlikeable characters. Fanfiction writing. Lots of telling. Lots of things that needed editing and further development. And why invent words for F1 and F2, but then use actual teams and drivers' names from F1? Also, I'm just a lay-person when it comes to racing, but even I know the author got a lot of the terminology and procedures of racing wrong.

Sitting outside while it's still possible without burning to a crisp. Putting together my "check list" for the upcoming month. Lots of books starting with L. I'm hoping the #ClassicLSFBC and the #LittensLoveRomance pick will start with an L too. ?

So many Fast&Furious films 😵‍💫

Favourites:
🍿 The Martian
🍿 Despicable Me (and Minions)
🍿 Deadpool

Instead of the above mentioned F&F films, I'd have loved to see films like Monuments Men, Downton Abbey, Hidden Figures, Dunkirk

Cuilin Dunkirk was so good. 3w

MaleficentBookDragon I saw 93.; more if you count my falling asleep halfway through some of the Spider-Mans or my not paying attention anger watching of the Twilights with my friend who loves them. I wonder how high my score would have been if all movie releases were on that list. I like movies, what can I say? The Downton Abbey movies would be on my list too. (edited) 3w
julesG @MaleficentBookDragon I wonder who compiles the lists. There are so many missing. 3w
