Mickey is an expendable. Meaning, he's kind of immortal. Also, he's the one who has to do the dangerous jobs in the beachhead colony.

When the 7th instalment doesn't die, but an 8th version has already been generated; colonists die; the local fauna starts being really aggressive;...

Half way through the #ARC and really enjoying it.

I know I'm not a native speaker of English. I know I make pronunciation mistakes. BUT why do audiobook narrators, who are (in most cases) native speakers, get away with pronunciation mistakes? Are there no audiobook editors?

Today's word that pulled me out of the story: the blackguard [pronounced here: the black guard]

Is it just me who's annoyed with something like this?

Palimpsest I started listening to The House of Mirth and the narrator pronounced a word, I think egotism, (it started with ego) as eggo…Then I wondered if it is pronounced differently in British English as I speak American English. Then I thought I probably couldn‘t do as good a job, but generally a narrator should pronounce correctly. As for 2nd languages, I‘m trying to learn 3 & am not confident with any! U.S. is bad at instilling other languages as kids. 2d
LibrarianRyan I agree. I have the same problems, especially with self published books, that used an online platform to get a independent audio recording. Some are really good, but so many are sooooo bad. It especially sucks because, especially on ticktok, audiobooks are considered a “side hustle“. Big money, little time. 2d
See All 10 Comments
julesG @Palimpsest Maybe the narrator was hungry? 😜 2d
julesG @LibrarianRyan So annoying! 2d
Susanita I feel your pain! This was such an interesting story, but I had to deduct a star because the narrator made so many pronunciation mistakes. Not to mention her voice seemed a little juvenile for such a sweeping tale. 2d
Hooked_on_books This drives me crazy! When I started listening to audiobooks, I just assumed they would pronounce things correctly, since that‘s as it should be. Then I listened to a book with Philadelphia‘s river, the Schuylkill, and they butchered it! It‘s not an easy word if you don‘t know it, but it‘s pretty easy to figure out by asking someone from Philly. So, yep, you‘re not alone. 2d
TheSpineView I hate grammar errors. To me it's like nails on a chalk board! 😬 2d
CarolynM I don't know about other countries, but in Australia at the moment there seems to be a feeling that "alternate" pronunciation of some words are acceptable. "Extraordinary" is an example and it strikes me that "Blackguard" would probably be another. I'm with you, though, I hate it. 1d
Oryx Blackguard is such a good word 😄 But I suspect a lot of non readers will not realise how it is spelt. Audio errors annoy me too. They happen a surprising amount. And then I doubt my pronunciation! Like, have I been wrong my whole life... Maybe an editor realizes, but it's too expensive to fix? 18h

Not sure if I reviewed this when I first read it. I'm on my third re-read right now. My brain needs something soothing and St Mary's does that for me.

@TrishB - since Richard III makes an appearance in this one, I'm wishing we had talked some more about the R in the car park. You probably know way more about Richard than I do. Can you remember the title of the time travelling book you mentioned?

TrishB I‘m looking! There seems to be a few around now- but I can‘t find the one I read. Will search the shelves later. The best non fiction about his life is this one - it‘s a chunkster. 4d
julesG @TrishB Thanks. I think one of you mentioned The Sunne in a zoom. 4d
TrishB @rockpools is currently reading 👍🏻 4d
TrishB Found it! Be warned - it‘s cheesy and not good writing! The Daughter of Time is also a good fictional intro. 4d

Happy Holiday to the Littens celebrating today!

Spin-off of the Shopping for a Billionaire series. First book/novella. Perfect read for today, BUT ends in a cliffhanger.

I think, JK managed to put everything that my European mind thinks Turkey Day is into this book.

I laughed so hard at times, my sides hurt.

Soubhiville I keep gazing at my shelf of TP and feeling slightly sad that there are only a handful of Discworld novels left in my series reread. I think my favorite part of Thud! Was Sam‘s devotion to reading time. But I NEVER want to hear about that cow again! Of course as always I love TP‘s inter-species relations, the trolls and dwarves, Angua and the vampire, etc. The “can‘t we all just get along” vibe is so relevant to RL. ⬇️ 4w
julesG @Soubhiville Yeah, I thought this rang very true. I love that about the Discworld novels. - Re: get along 4w
See All 8 Comments
Soubhiville Learning to respect each other‘s cultures and historical backgrounds can improve everyone‘s life experiences. 🙌 I also got a kick out of the coach journey that got a bit of help from the wizards. The explanation of magic involved and how much no one really trusted it, I was cracking up. 🤣 Well done as always Sir Terry. 💙 4w
ozma.of.oz This one is one of my absolute favorites. The tensions, Vimes‘s dedication to his son, Sybil (always, always Sybil my love), the parallel tensions with Sally and Angua, the ending. It‘s all just so so good. This month was my first time listening to it, and I got to say the end scene in the cave hit a little different when hearing it out loud. 4w
ozma.of.oz I totally get what you mean @Soubhiville I still haven‘t read Snuff or The Shepherd‘s Crown yet, because I know as soon as I do, there‘s nothing new after that. I might just have to start another reread when we‘re done. 😂 4w
DrexEdit These books just get better and better. I love that Sybil saves the day with her Koom Valley drawings (even if she doesn't get enough credit for that in the book). I wish TP would show more of Sybil's knowledge/staunchness. One of my favorite Discworld themes: nobody ever accomplishes difficult things on their own. The things that make the characters different are the things that are shown as their strengths and everybody has a role to play. 4w
Soubhiville @DrexEdit I love that way of looking at it. 💙 4w

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I want to quote every other scene. It's definitely a funny Urban Fantasy set in Manchester.

RaeLovesToRead Ooh, might check this out. I used to live in Manchester and haven't read a book set there since Val McDermid. 1mo

Let the #20in4 #readathon begin! @Andrew65

Took my kid to the train station before dawn was even an idea. Now I have all day ahead of me with nothing much planned but reading. 😁

I'm starting with an #audiobook. The title matches the dawn sky quite nicely.

Cathythoughts It‘s just 7 here … I‘m an early riser 😁 a morning person.. I drive everyone mad 😃.. it‘s very quiet so I‘ll scroll Litsy , probably stack a few books … and read a bit before I get moving 👍🏻 Have a lovely reading day 😘 1mo
