This is a cute, funny audiobook of letters between Grandma Vivian, Winslow, the Boston Terrier and Zippy, a Terrier. It's a journey in letters thru Zippy 's first year of living with Winslow. Very light-hearted.

The Renegade Queen | Eva Flynn

5⭐ read!

I love history and historical fiction books. I had never heard of Victoria Woodhull. She wasn't mentioned in history classes when I was in school. Everyone has heard of Susan B. Anthony, but few of Victoria Woodhull.

What's so special about her? She was the first female stockbroker, the first woman to testify in front of Congress, and the first woman to run for President of the United States all during the 1870's. But, she's not ⬇️

Monica5 taught about in school. She was a feminist before that was a thing. Woodhull advocated for divorce laws, due to herself being married to an alcoholic and beaten, the criminalization of marital rape, for an 8 hour work day, and for women's right to vote as well as to own and have money. For everything she did, Woodhull was asked to leave the country.

Flynn wrote a well researched book. A book I think women should read. I learned so many things I never knew. In my opinion, after reading this book, Woodhull should be celebrated as much if not more than Susan B. Anthony. I highly recommend this book. I can't wait to read about the rest of her life. Eva Flynn get to writing!

Mrs. Wiggins | Mary Monroe
post image
Pickpick

4.5⭐

I had never heard of Mary Monroe and someone said she was one of their favorite writers. I looked and my local library had this book, which takes place beginning in 1917 and goes thru 1930's. It's a historical novel with a little bit of psychological thriller in it.

We first meet the two main MC's, Maggie Franklin and Hubert Wiggins, on their Wedding Day. This follows their married life through the Deep South until the 1930's. ⬇️

Monica5 During this time we witness the racism, sexual violence and hard life they go through. They both have secrets and one of their secrets is worse than the others.

I have to say that Mary Monroe is a great story teller. Mrs. Wiggins is a hard story to read, though I think it should be read by all. Monroe didn't hold anything back. She is a very vivid writer. This book was fast paced to me. I will be reading more by Monroe.

The face group Psychological Thriller had a post about Charlie Donlea. They talked about what a great writer he is, so I decided to read 'Twenty Years Later' by him. Glad I read it bc it was good.

A murder of an author takes place and 20 yrs later the lead detective is asked to consult for a TV show looking at the case. There's more to the case and the host of the TV show then you will expect. I recommend this gripping thriller.

I love watching shows like 20/20, 48 Hours and Dateline, and this book fell right along with that. Douglas and Olshaker write about the beginning of the Behavioral Unit at the FBI. They look at the behind the scenes.

The first part of the book dealt with Douglas' early life and time at the FBI. I would have preferred they looked at more cases. Some of the cases they explored I knew about, but there were quite a few I didn't. Overall, ⬇️

Monica5 a good read if you enjoy the True Crime Genre.

Holy Crap on a Cracker! Unbelievably good book. Freida McFadden is such a good psychological thriller writer. There were some hints in this one that were great red herrings. How she came up with those twists, I will never know. I read this book in half a day. So good! Not much else I can say because I don't want to give anything away. If you like psychological thrillers, I highly recommend you read this book. Heck read all her books!

I'm still wondering if anything I read was true. This kept me on the edge of my seat. The suspense kept building page after page.

I gave this 4⭐ because I figured out the ending. Plus, Josie got on my nerves and I just didn't think some of what Jewell wrote was quite believable. Overall though, it was a good thriller with twists.

Off the Air: A Novel | Christina Estes
post image
Mehso-so

Off the Air is Christina Estes' debut book. It's a fiction story that looks at the life of a TV news reporter. Jolene is the last person to do an interview with local radio celebrity Larry Lemmon before he dies on air.

I don't know about other readers of this book, but to me, it seemed more like a behind the scenes look at a newsroom and the job reporters have than a fictional book. It compared how things used to be in reporting the news.⬇️

Monica5 .to how it is today.

There was mystery in it as you don't know what happened to Larry Lemmon until almost the end. I did like the red herrings, but the book was a very soft 3⭐ for me. I did enjoy some of the characters, I didn't notice much character development.

As I figure this is probably going to be a series, I.will read the next book. I'll give Estes another shot before I give up on her.

Trigger Warnings:
Abandonment, ageism, animal cruelty, child neglect, classism, homelessness, racism, sexism, sexual coercion and substance abuse.

Bye, Baby: A Novel | Carola Lovering
post image
Mehso-so

I enjoyed this story. It's billed as a psychological thriller, but to me it was more a woman's fiction. It dealt with friendship from school to adulthood and how that whole concept changes things. It's written in dual timelines, as well as multiple POV's.

Billie and Cassie met at the age of 12 and became best friends. As adults, one drifts from the other one, which happens in all friendships. Then one night, one does something ⬇️

Monica5 that is unforgivable to the other.

There are trigger warnings in this book. Child Abuse, Sexual Abuse, Dementia, and a crime ( I don't want to say which crime bc I don't want to give anything away).

While, I didn't always like Billie or Cassie, I could relate to them. How many of us still talk to their best friend in school, even once a month? I'm sure some do, but for most of us, you grow apart. Rather it's distance, children or just life getting in the way. I will say that there was good character development in the book. The story moved along at a good pace. But, I just didn't think the ending as a whole was believable. That's just my opinion though. Others may think that that would actually happen, but I'm not so sure.

I found 'The Fury' to be just okay. There are a lot of twists and turns it takes. It flip flops a whole lot between past and present, which I don't usually mind, but the way it was written didn't work for me. There's been mixed reviews on it and I can see why. The narrator, Elliott, was unreliable to me.

'The Boy Who Cried Bear' is the.second book in the Haven's Rock Series by Kelley Armstrong. Casey and Eric are one of my favorite detective and sheriff duo. They have left Rockton and started a new hidden town in the Yukon called Haven's Rock.

There are a lot of things different between Haven's Rock and ⬇️

#netgalley #stmartinspress #minotaurbooks #kelleyarmstrong #theboywhocriedbear #readaway2024 #serieslove2024 #alphabetchallenge2024 (B)

Monica5 Rockton. One being that, in Haven's Rock, they allow children. We meet two of the children, Carson and Max, in this installment. They are brothers that moved with their mom when their dad was murdered. One day on a hike, Max notices a bear. This starts the next case for Casey and Eric. While they have the town locked down, Max goes missing.

Armstrong continues to develop all the main characters in this series. Casey, Eric and the others have grown so much from the start of the Rockton series. She finds a way to keep this series interesting. Armstrong always leaves me wanting this next book, but alas I must wait. She combined suspense, mystery and everyday life into a satisfying read.

If you haven't read the Haven's Rock Series yet, you need to, especially if you read the Rockton series and enjoyed it.

Erik Larson always writes a well researched history book, and this one is no different. He looks at the early years of WWII and the blitz on London. I enjoyed this different look at London during WWII. Larson tells us in detail how the bomb shelters truly were. I learned so much by listening to this audiobook. Churchill was an interesting person but eccentric. He had no shyness about him and would take baths while his secretary was taking ⬇️

Monica5 notes from him in the bathroom. He watched the bombing of London from rooftops. With all his eccentrics, I don't think anyone else could have saved London and the world from Hitler the way he did. I think the book probably would have been better if I had read it instead of listened to it. I assume there would have been pictures and maps that would have brought it more clearly to me.

If you enjoy WWII history, you would probably enjoy this book.

A Traitor in Whitehall is the first in Parisian Orphan Series. It is a historical fiction mystery series. Julia Kelly has definitely started the series of in a good book.

It's 1940 in England and Germany has begun it's blitz on England. Evelyn Renforn is working at a mutation plant when one night she is spotted by Mr. Fletcher. He offers her a job as a typist at Whitehall. Soon, she is plunged into a murder investigation and looking for ⬇️

Monica5 traitor.

I enjoyed reading 'A Traitor in Whitehall '. I will say it was a little slow at the start, but soon picked up. Evelyn is feisty in a 1940 way and I like that about her. I thought there was good character development, intrigue and a little suspense. I really like the fact that Evelyn is a reader and Kelly bought that out in the book. I enjoyed her little spurs with Poole about English Detective Novels vs American ones. I will definitely be reading more of this series. I came upon it from someone's in Litsy that had read it and recommended it. Glad I took their recommendation.

The third book in the 'Brides of Lancaster County' by Wanda E. Brunstetter. Plain and Fancy was well written. Laura is from Minnesota and goes to Designing School in Pennsylvania. She meets Eli Holder, who is Amish. Eli has not joined church, yet, bc he hasn't meet the woman he wants to spend the rest of his life with. That doesn't matter to his mother. She thinks Pauline is the perfect wife for Eli After Eli and Laura meet, they try ⬇️

Monica5 stay away from each other, but it doesn't work. Soon Laura decides to become Amish, so her and Eli can marry.

There was great character development with Laura and Eli. She faced a lot of changes to her way of life. One thing I didn't like was that she complained all the time. I was thinking to myself, you were the one who chose to become Amish. Quit taking it out on others and blaming them for your decision.

Can she learn to live with her decision? What secret is she hiding from Eli? If you like Christian Fiction and have never read Brunstetter, you really need to give her a try. I think you will enjoy her books. I know I do.
