Shamelessly pivoting to this book just because I wasn‘t ready to leave Scotland after finishing the previous book. I too have a thirst for the highlands 🤣 That being said I think this is a good candidate for #GuiltyPleasure #TitlesAndTunes bonus points because Twin Atlantic are from Glasgow. Admittedly I didn‘t care for this song when I first heard it but now I love it. Also this book fits the June prompt for #TBRTarot book with a prologue.

I kind of picked this book on a whim, but I really enjoyed it. In the aftermath of her brother‘s death, June escapes from Ohio to Scotland to try to figure out how to deal with her grief and with the help of the friends she makes, she reimagines a new path for herself. I was so invested in all the side characters to this story as well. I would love to see another installment into this world. This was my June #BookSpin

I don‘t think I shared this here, but a while back my son‘s school put on Shrek the musical and ever since then my son has been absolutely obsessed with the franchise. I love it. We cycle through the movies and tv specials like clockwork around here. I have also noticed the Shrek references keep popping up in random other places too. There was one when I read Doctor Sleep for #LosersClub in April and now I caught another one here lol

Mehso-so

This book falls between a so-so and a pick for me. When I found this book 5 years ago, I treated it more as an encyclopedia as someone learning about the Ace spectrum for the first time. For all the information and resources that are laid out, it‘s a great introductory resource. I didn‘t really care for the fact that the author seems to imply that Ace people should be grateful for the scraps of inclusivity that may be received in queer spaces ⬇️

MatchlessMarie while ultimately saying that Ace folks need to understand that they may be a reminder of straightness to queer people who are not educated on asexuality. Umm what 😆 and then can‘t seem to decide whether or not aces who pass as hetero are experiencing privilege or erasure. 🧐 Also there are a few unhinged suggestions regarding how to handle criticism some of which are mildly entertaining 😅 2d
MatchlessMarie Overall, I think it is a decent resource but the repetition can be whiplash inducing at times and should be viewed more as an overview and survey of multiple viewpoints, as the author doesn‘t take a clear stance on several topics presented. 2d

Kenyazero This one sounds very up and down indeed 😆 2d
MatchlessMarie @Kenyazero I think for the time in which it was written, it was probably one of the only accessible resources out there for people trying to figure out this whole Ace thing and has helped many folks. I am glad that there is so much more information out there now though. 💜 1d
Kenyazero @MatchlessMarie That seems like a fair assessment! Super glad there are many more ace resources now. 1d

The fates decided I should have a skating themed #Bookspin / #DoubleSpin May. I wasn‘t sure what I was getting into with the tagged book. It‘s a memoir that packs a punch about the power of found family and roller derby! Triggers abound, including homophobia, religious trauma, disordered eating, abusive family relationships and more so be sure to check those. I have been crap lately about posting here but I had to hop on since it‘s Horton Hears a Who Day!

“On the 15th of May, in the jungle of Nool,
In the heat of the day, in the cool of the pool, He was splashing…enjoying the jungle‘s great joys…When Horton the elephant heard a small noise."

Here is a throwback pic of my son with his Horton plushie. He just celebrated his 12th birthday on the 5th. Horton was one of his first favorites.

One of the main reasons I was drawn to the tagged book is because the title made me think of the Dan the Man Album Brightly Coloured Creatures. As you can see one track in particular is nearly on target. I was a little hesitant to start because I have seen quite a few meh reviews. But I really loved this story. The beginning seemed disjointed at first but it was neat seeing how the individual stories intertwined. #bookmusicpairing #thingsincommon

Question for my fellow bespectacled littens who also have a job reading a computer screen all day… 👓 💻 Lately I have been struggling to read my kindle / physical books just because my eyes are so tired at the end of the day. I have never used blue light blocking lenses before and have been considering trying it if it helps. Just wondering if any of you out there have any advice. I will want to read and I come home from work and just zonk out 😴

SamAnne I hear they work well but I‘ve not tried them. I read on an Ipad and I turn the light to a warm tone when reading at night. 2mo
Hooked_on_books This may sound weird, but blink more often when you‘re at your computer. People tend to blink far less when looking at a screen and it causes eye strain. I would put a post it on my screen edge to remind myself. Hopefully it‘ll help! 2mo
mrsmarch When I had a concussion and trouble reading afterward, my optometrist said to live by the 20/20/20 rule — every 20 minutes, focus on a spot 20 feet away for 20 seconds. It will help keep your eyes from getting too exhausted. I hope it helps you! 2mo
See All 11 Comments
zezeki I was wondering the same, I'm also thinking about getting myself those glass. I've also read somewhere that every 20 minutes you should look away from your screen for 20 seconds and look into 20 meters distance. I also reduced brightness on my screen and switched everything to dark mode, and that has helped me. 2mo
zezeki @mrsmarch Hahahh I just posted the same thing! 😂 2mo
zezeki @Hooked_on_books Haven't heard this, will try it out. 2mo
mrsmarch @zezeki Heyo! 😂 I like the recommendation about dark mode too — he didn‘t suggest it, but I did switch my appliances to dark mode and turn ol down the brightness on my phone and my reader. 2mo
eeclayton I've got blue light blocking lenses, I've had the for almost two years, and I feel they are helpful. Like others, I'm also constantly adjusting the brightness settings on my devices to find the lowest level that fits the environment I'm in. There are apps too that filter out blue light, and some of these can switch the warmer setting on at sunset. 2mo
AprilMae I love my blue light blocking lenses, the help me so much! I work 10+ hours a day with 3 screens and I agree with everyone saying use the 20 rule and dark mode on screens. I also have found that taking "eye breaks" which is basically just shutting your eyes for an amount of time (I sing happy Birthday twice lol) then blink a bunch it can help refocus my eyes too. 2mo
Tamra Funny you should ask, I just got out of ophthalmologist office (moments ago) for a follow up from cataract surgery and I asked about them, wondering if they serve a purpose. He said they are helpful. 👓 2mo
MatchlessMarie Thank you everyone for your input. I can‘t believe I‘ve never heard of the 20 rule. I will have to try it out. Might order a pair with the blue block lenses just to try it out. I have never been able to get used to dark mode but I might give it a go. Not sure why I‘m struggling all of a sudden as much as I love audiobooks I want to get back to my owned piles again. @SamAnne @Hooked_on_books @mrsmarch @zezeki @eeclayton @AprilMae @Tamra 1mo

Daisy has an anniversary surprise of biblical proportions in store for him at an isolated cabin retreat designed for couples at a crossroad in their relationship. Here‘s my March #BookSpinBingo wrap up. Tagged book was my last read. I listened to the audio, but if this title is just now coming on your radar, you should know there was an updated and revised edition with a study guide that was just published in March you should check out. I really loved Austen‘s warm narrative style. Now that I am finally caught up on wrap ups I am really going to try to get a bingo for April. Last one was in December 🫣

One word title is my next pairing theme for #ThingsInCommon Tagging #TBRTarot as this is also the April prompt. Autoboyography was a soft pick for me there were some aspects of the story that I don‘t feel were fully fleshed out and in some cases handled poorly. But I think overall it was decent rep about dynamics of closeted young people in religious communities, in this case the LDS church. First #TrappedOnAnIsland 📖 complete.

I will shamelessly admit this book landed on my TBR for the sole reason that Noah Galvin is one of the narrators. This actually ended up being a pick for me though. This story chronicles a water shortage called the Tap-Out in California and its impact— terrible consequences in some cases. For a book published in 2018 there were some eerie similarities to Covid hoarding. Fits #TBRTarot April prompt for a book with a one word title.

I have not been great at posting this month, but I have been reading! This was the second book I read in March. This was also fulfills my “book with a yellow cover” prompt for February‘s #TBRTarot. #MarchMadness #Netgalley Review in comments 👇

MatchlessMarie After reading A Brush With Love which was a so-so read for me, I didn‘t have a lot of expectations for the sequel. I was interested to see how the author would approach adhd. I definitely enjoyed this book more and was impressed with the detail that Lizzie‘s adhd is explored compounded with her dysfunctional family dynamics. 👇 (edited) 3mo
MatchlessMarie Would have been 4/5 for me but the entire launch party/workplace nametag conflict towards the end of the book irritated me so much I dropped a star. It felt forced and like the author was trying to make it an inevitable outcome because of Lizzie‘s adhd which I felt was out of Lizzie‘s character adhd or not. It was just a ridiculous detour to ramp up the conflict and could have executed better or ditched altogether. 👇 3mo
MatchlessMarie I disagree with those who say that Rake was trying to demonize his ex for having an abortion without telling him. That is a gigantic leap. Read it again he says he respected her decision and Lizzie had already made the choice to proceed with her pregnancy before she even told Rake. He wasn‘t pressuring her one way or another, he only wanted to be present every step of the way. 👇

MatchlessMarie Whether it was realistic that he would upend his life and relocate across the globe to be near to the mother of his child was irrelevant to me and did not diminish my enjoyment of the story. This is fiction, after all. Overall I thought it was a solid story with some excellent education on adhd and I enjoyed the author‘s humor. Will probably read the next in the series.

I received this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
