Babylon's Ashes | James S A Corey

Pickpick

Even though this book picks up right where Nemesis Games left off, I found the first 100 pages a bit of a slog. I set the book aside temporarily hoping it was just my reading mood. Turns out it was. Babylon‘s Ashes turned out to be much better than I thought it would be, and given the ending I‘m very curious to see where the series‘ final three books are heading.

I‘m going way back on Ken Follett‘s backlist with this book, which I‘ve owned pretty much since it came out 😬 As is probably obvious by the cover, this is a work of historical fiction set during WWII. It features a group of female agents behind enemy lines. I liked it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Having only read the first book a couple of years ago I‘m totally late to the Agent Pendergast party, but I‘m here now and that‘s what matters. This is the second book in the series, and I‘m glad there was a continuation of characters from book one cause I liked them. This one was fast-paced and never felt too long despite its length. Loved learning about underground Manhattan. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

#14books14week2021 Book 12 ✅

RamsFan1963 Is The Relic the 1st book in the series? I remember an awful movie by that name in the late 90s. Are they the same? 2y
MsMelissa @RamsFan1963 It is! I had to look up the movie and it seems it was based on the book - although the series main character, FBI agent Pendergast, isn‘t in the movie. Which seems weird to me. 2y
RamsFan1963 @MsMelissa I was curious. I remember the movie, but I didnt remember the FBI agent character. I've been interested in reading the series, seen it get lots of Litsy love. 2y

TrishB The first is nothing like the rest of the series, honestly! 2y
BookwormM I agree with @TrishB for me this is the weakest book the series is totally different and epic 2y
MsMelissa @TrishB @BookwormM I knew going in that the first book had issues, but I honestly didn‘t expect to dislike it to the point that I care not one bit about how the rest of the series unfolds. 2y

rabbitprincess On the plus side, one less series to feel FOMO about 😅 2y
DrexEdit I really thought book 1 was a waste of time. If you like Stephen King though you might try sticking with it. I found the 2nd book onwards (I think I'm on book 4 now) to be much more King-like. You only need the barest of details from book 1 to follow. I don't think even Stephen King likes book 1! LOL! 😄 2y
Twainy Agree with some of the others … odd choice King made, but this is the slowest, worst of the series. 2y
ItsAnotherJen I read this series ages and ages ago and only remember being obsessed with it. I wonder if I would like as much if I reread it. Probably not! 2y
MsMelissa @DrexEdit @Twainy I haven‘t read King in years (we‘re talking since the ‘90s 😂). I doubt I‘ll continue even if the series gets better. I didn‘t like anything about it enough to continue on. (edited) 2y
MsMelissa @ItsAnotherJen So many people seem to love it! I liked the other King books I‘ve read, so I‘m just going to chalk this one up to the story itself being the problem. 2y

A good ending to a very enjoyable trilogy that mixes myth and history. While I didn‘t enjoy this one as much as the first two book, mainly because I thought the romantic subplot the weakest of the three books, I still think the end was fitting. I now want to read some pure historical fiction set in medieval Brittany. ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

I‘m officially done with this series. Sure, each book is quick and easy to read, but the storylines are essentially the same (and not at all believable). Only the locations are different. I‘m bored and don‘t care. I‘m tired of reading the same thing over and over again.

#14books14weeks2021 book seven ✅ I‘m counting this because I read more than half of the book.

TheHeartlandBookFairy That's so irritating when the author gives up and is uninspired and repetitive ☹ 2y
RamsFan1963 @MsMelissa I've only read his Scarecrow books, but I enjoyed them very much. Yes it's sad when a series goes on longer than the writer's enthusiasm for it. 2y
TrishB I‘ve given up on series for the same reason! 2y
MsMelissa @TheHeartlandBookFairy @RamsFan1963 @TrishB It‘s only the third book 😂 It‘s not that it‘s bad, it‘s just that I read the exact story in the first two books. and to keep me interested there needs to be something that differentiates each book from the others. 2y

#UnpopularOpinion This novel is getting rave reviews from everyone but this reader. I read more than 100 pages, which is long past the point at which I generally decide to continue or DNF a book that‘s not working for me, but my initial feelings of apathy never shifted. This novel is a perfect example of why I love historical fiction. Set in mid-19th century India around and during the time of what‘s known as the Sepoy Rebellion, the main character is a Durga Dal - a member of an elite group of female guards who protect the rani (Rani Lakshmi). This book was not only entertaining, it also taught me a lot. We need more historical fiction like this one ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

#Unpopularopinion This book gets lots of love on Litsy, but I had too many issues with it for the novel to work well for me. I‘ve read much better books about the power/importance of books, and about civilian struggles during wartimes. This is a dual time narrative, and the secondary narrative offers little value to the main story. Finally, I never warmed up to the main character. Yup, I‘m a #partypooper ⭐️⭐️💫

Friday evening plans 📖

I‘m about halfway through this book and I don‘t love it. The themes are just too similar to those in other WWII fiction I‘ve read recently. I‘m also just tired in general. Work has been crazy since April, and I‘m putting in a lot of extra hours. My reading has suffered. I should get a break in August, but I also thought I‘d get one in July and that‘s not happening. I hate when life interferes with my reading plans🤷🏻‍♀️

Between so-so and a pan, which, based on Litsy ratings, puts me in the minority on this one. There were a lot of things I didn‘t like-the portrayal of the Dionne mother and the novel‘s ending for starters-but my main issue was the narrative format. The story unfolds as a series of rather choppy diary entries. The narrative simply doesn‘t flow, and the reader is told everything, never shown. ⭐️⭐️

TrishB I loved this series, it‘s definitely a slow build, but worth it! 2y
MsMelissa @TrishB I‘m so curious to see where things are going… 2y

Hi Littens! I‘ve not been reading much lately so haven‘t been around much, but despite my reading decreasing my TBR pile continues to grow 😂

Non-essential stores were allowed to open back up as of yesterday, so of course I went to my favourite bookstore today! I may have been so overcome with happiness that I bought more books than usual. Oh well 🤷🏻‍♀️📚📚📚

LeahBergen A little lack of reading has never stopped ME from buying books either. 😆 2y
CoverToCoverGirl No matter what, one always needs more books! 🙂 2y
janeycanuck My indie wasn‘t ready to open Friday. I think they‘ll be back early this week, I‘m so excited to go browse in person soon!!! 2y

Cathythoughts I can relate to that … new books will inspire you to read ( that‘s my rationale 😂 2y
MsMelissa @LeahBergen I find I actually buy more books when my reading is reduced. Like I‘m making up for my lack of reading by buying more books 😂 2y
MsMelissa @CoverToCoverGirl I fully support that 💯 2y
MsMelissa @janeycanuck Have they opened? I went to the local Indigo. We don‘t have any indies in my local area, but the Indigo staff all know me 😂 2y
MsMelissa @Cathythoughts Yes, I figure buying more books will force me to read more… 2y
janeycanuck @MsMelissa yeah, they opened Monday but we haven‘t made it down yet. Our Indigo is closer than our indie but the indie has a liquor licence so…………. 2y
MsMelissa @janeycanuck okay, now I understand why you can‘t wait to go back 😂 2y
rubyslippersreads @LeahBergen @Cathythoughts @MsMelissa Because what if you‘re in the mood to read and don‘t have any books? (Highly unlikely for any of us, I realize, but the thought still terrifies me. 🙀) 2y
MsMelissa @rubyslippersreads Yup, that‘s my totally irrational fear 😂 2y

Happy Friday! It‘s been a long week, and I‘ve only managed to read a few pages since last weekend. I should be turning my attention to something fluffy because I‘m mentally exhausted, but instead I‘ve decided to dive right into this epic tale of Mexican drug lords and DEA agents 😂

TrishB I have this on my tbr! 2y
CoverToCoverGirl You‘re brave..😲 I‘m attempting Helter Skelter this month, not sure if I‘ll be able to get through it though. (edited) 2y

The Third Pole is a work of non-fiction that details a 2019 expedition to Mt. Everest that set out to find the body of Sandy Irvine. The books provides not only an account of that expedition and others on the mountain at the same time (2019 was a deadly season with 11 climbers dying), but also of Mallory & Irvine‘s 2024 summit attempt. The book is very well written, and left me pondering what actually happened in 1924 🤔

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

MsMelissa For anyone who has read the book - do you finish thinking Mallory & Irving probably reached the summit? I did. 2y
BiblioLitten Definitely stacking! 2y
Megabooks Great review, and I definitely think Mallory and Irving made it!! (edited) 2y

LeahBergen Yep. Stacking! 2y
Cinfhen I‘m glad you enjoyed this one! Wonderful review 💕I kept hoping he would find something!! Do you think the Chinese hid the camera??? I wouldn‘t be surprised @Megabooks @MsMelissa and yes, it would seem they reached the summit ~ which is INCREDIBLE given how crude their equipment was in 1924. 2y
MsMelissa @Cinfhen @megabooks Yes, I totally think the body and camera have been hidden and/or destroyed. I kept hoping something would be found, too. 2y
MsMelissa @LeahBergen I knew you would 😉 2y
MsMelissa @BiblioLitten This is one of the better Everest books I‘ve read. Loved the mix of modern and historical expeditions. 2y
Megabooks @MsMelissa @cinfhen China definitely took both bodies and the camera. I think this is especially true because Hillary‘s body disappeared! (edited) 2y

Today‘s #bookmail 📬

This is a total blame it on Litsy purchase thanks to @Cinfhen and @Megabooks as, despite my Mt. Everest obsession, I wasn‘t aware of this one until they posted about it. Will be starting right away!

Megabooks Enjoy! It‘s a fantastic book. 2y
TrishB You‘ll have 2 soon! If my book depository order ever turns up 😁 2y

Mehso-so

This book wasn‘t really my thing. The prose is lovely, but the narrative was too reflective for my tastes. Plus, too many questions went unanswered, and I hate that! The book is only 250 pages long, but if it had been any longer I would have bailed. The so-so rather than pan rating reflects the fact that the writing is high quality. ⭐️⭐️

LeahBergen So, stick with the Netflix film? 😆 2y
MsMelissa @LeahBergen I haven‘t watched it yet, but apparently it has more action and some of my questions may be answered 🤔 I definitely should have watched the movie instead of reading the book 🤣 2y

It‘s the Victoria Day long weekend and I should be at my parent‘s cottage, but lockdown is still in effect so we‘re spending it at home 😢

I‘m kicking off my weekend reading with the pictured book. Has anyone read it?

Cathythoughts I hope you get to go to the cottage soon .. I always love the pictures you post from there 🤞🏻💫 2y
MsMelissa @Cathythoughts I get my first vaccine shot this week, and my daughter is eligible as of tomorrow, so we are hoping to be able to go in July or August depending on the restrictions. 2y
Ruthiella I‘ve read the book. It‘s a little slow and very character focused, if that‘s what you are in the mood for. 2y

I was unsure what to make of this book at the story‘s outset, but by page 75 I was hooked! I‘m going to make my friends IRL read this one because I need to talk about it!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

TrishB Have been on the fence about this one - you may have pushed me over. 2y
LeahBergen This sounds a bit like We Need To Talk About Kevin (which I liked!). Is it? 2y
MsMelissa @TrishB Honestly, I didn‘t like the beginning at all as I didn‘t like the way it was written. Once I adapted to the writing style and the narrative picked up I didn‘t want to put it down. 2y
MsMelissa @LeahBergen I haven‘t read that one so I‘m not sure. Now I want to read it though 😂 2y

It‘s been a while since I‘ve been able to get through a 400+ page book in one day, but that‘s exactly what I was able to do with this thriller, which I finished last night. I had to suspend my disbelief on occasion, but this novel was non-stop action from the very first chapter. Note to self: must read more by Linwood Barclay! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

TrishB Stacked 👍🏻 have read all of his. 2y

MsMelissa @ShelleyBooksie reading it was a very entertaining way to spend the day 😊 2y
MsMelissa @FantasyChick Yes, it‘s definitely a sign! 2y
MsMelissa @rabbitprincess Only having read one other of his books I can‘t say how this one compares, but if they are all like this one I can see why he‘s an auto buy author for you. 2y

Project Hail Mary | Andy Weir

Pickpick

I enjoyed The Martian, but hated Artemis so much I bailed on it. My verdict on Project Hail Mary? I LOVED it! The narrative revolves around one man‘s mission to save earth from an apocalyptic event. Sounds serious, right? This book, however, is so much fun. I loved Ryland, and all the secondary characters he interacts with (Rocky 🥰). Is it the best written book in the world? No. But the story had me engaged throughout. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Ruthiella I‘m glad it was a winner for you ! 🚀 2y

This is an impressive debut novel about Thelma Morgan, an American who married into the British aristocracy and had an affair with the Prince of Wales before he met Wallis Simpson - in fact, Thelma was the person who introduced the Prince to Wallis in the first place. But the novel isn‘t just about Thelma and the Prince, it‘s also about Thelma and her twin sister, Gloria Vanderbilt, and the infamous custody battle for Little Gloria.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

CoverToCoverGirl So glad you liked it. I‘ll definitely be checking out her next novel coming in 2022. 2y
Prairiegirl_reading I really enjoyed this one too! 2y
MsMelissa @CoverToCoverGirl @Prairiegirl_reading I admit to knowing nothing about Thelma Morgan prior to reading this one. In fact, I‘d never heard of her before even though I was familiar with Gloria Vanderbilt and the custody trial. 2y
