Mehso-so

If Night at the Museum, Narnia and Journey to the Center of the Earth were siblings and had a horrific secret love-child they kept stashed away in a dark basement you might get this book. Weird and kind of twisty but not in the greatest way. Started out strong but I lost interest pretty quickly. If I ever find a hidden portal in an Oddities museum I hope it leads me somewhere else

This is a low pick for me. Was it enjoyable and a quick read? Yes. Was the plot a bit "meh" the characters kind of bland and a bit too insta-lovey for my taste? Also yes.
I went in blind after seeing it all over TikTok but maybe I should have read the blurb. I would have enjoyed a fantasy romance more. Super rich crime boss doesn't really do it for me ?‍♀️ The nods to Peter Pan throughout were fun though!

Clwojick Do you have a favourite narrator for this one? I was going to listen to it back in October, but couldn‘t get into the version I had… 7d
FantasyChick @Clwojick I listened to the Campbell Scott narration. He was hard to get into at first and the basic storyline he isn't the greatest BUT he does do the horror filled scenes fantastically! It's more or less pushing through to get to the good parts. 5d

So this wasn't bad but it wasn't great. This was quite slow for a while with dual timelines from Rose Gold's life after sending her mother to prison and then life after she brings her mother home. There's a lot to unpack, a lot that doesn't quite add up and a whole lot of craziness at the end. I'll give it to the author though - there was one twist I never would have seen coming.

Not bad, but not what I hyped it to be in my head 🤷‍♀️

This is probably my favourite book by Jennifer McMahon to date. I went in blind and was not disappointed. Frankenstein influence, deep family secrets, Supernatural monster hunting vibes, dual timelines and twists that made me pause and go "Wait, what?"

Yup. I'm calling it.
I make a point sometimes to read books with controversy around it because I'm just nosy and wanna know why. I don't even think I made it to any seriously bad parts in this because I'm SO bored. It's like the author took everything that could possibly be repulsive, offensive, or horrific and said "Sure, why not?" But not in a good way. I mean, fainting couches on the street so you can safely pass out from starvation? Come on

FantasyChick This had the possibility to be a decent book for me because I do enjoy taboo and triggering content but it would need a new setting, new characters, new mentality....it'd just need to be a while new book. I didn't even get to meet Thirteen yet because I just don't care anymore. At least it was a just a curiosity read and nothing I was looking forward to 🤷‍♀️ 3w

I'm so torn! I'm saying this is a pick because the book was enjoyable and I love me some Barker but this is a low pick, which is weird because I've never rated Barker less than 5 stars.

The story was good and had a great sci fi/fantasy/thriller aspect but it kept losing me. Fast paced but I felt it drag. I liked the Then and Now format but there wasn't enough disconnect between past and present for me. The lines blurred too much. 👇👇

FantasyChick A reread in a few months might make me feel different - this didn't sit for 6 years waiting for me to get to it - so it could just be timing. This would make a badass movie though!! 3w

I'd say this was better than ok but not as great as it could have been. The twists were pretty easy to see coming if you were looking for them and the storyline was a bit on the "seen it all before" side of things but it was enjoyable and a pretty quick read once I got going.

I'm not mad at this. Technically, this is a reread for me but I couldn't remember a thing about it so it was all practically brand new. There was a lot that wasn't really necessary but for the most part I think this was an excellent first book to set the tone for the series.

Thinking of turning my #ReadKing into a #ReadAndWatchKing experience now. There are SO many adaptations it might be a good time.

FantasyChick @Leftcoastzen Exactly! I've never stopped collecting them and always check the bins whenever I'm in the store. My #ShelfPick bingo board seemed to work pretty good this month for me, especially for my #MoodReads I think I'll stick with it for a while!

The best part? I can keep reusing the same list 🤣

It's the little things, really

My #WeekendReading #20in4 #readathon goals

Honestly, I'm probably just going to be picking up HOSAB because it's widely talked about and I've already picked up on a few spoilers that are going ruin this whole thing for me so I need to know how this plays out. If I manage to finish I'll know I have at least 20 hrs in...I'm only on chapter 20 so I have a LONG way to go!

Finally!! After some weather delays it is here 😍😍

My first thought: Not a big fan of the cover but I didn't care for the first cover that much either🤷‍♀️

Second thought: How the fuck am I going to hold this to read? 🤣

#BookMail #NewBooks #ChunkyBooks #ReaderProblems

Professional_Book_Dragon Im reading it right now and it‘s a challenge. I like to read in the bath tub but this is not a bathtub friendly book. It‘s amazing so far though 3mo
Follow.my.read I have a “book pillow” LOL! I need it especially for Brandon Sanderson books!!! 3mo
KristiAhlers Yeah I‘m a total fan of carrying a book wherever I go. To include taking a bath with it. On top of that I‘ve got small hands. Like I get my winter gloves in the kids section 😂 so it was a challenge. I propped it up on a pillow! And proceeded to inhale it over three days! 3mo
FantasyChick @Professional_Book_Dragon @Follow.my.read @KristiAhlers I'm a big fan of reading in the tub and in bed but there is NO way this beast is going to work! I think I might have to steal the pillow idea and read on the couch for a while. I started it immediately and I think it might be a quick read! 3mo

Pickpick

Maas is definitely a one-trick pony when it comes to her books but I just don't care. I'm not looking for something thought provoking when I grab one of her books - I'm looking for a trashy escape and she always provides. It's too long, too wordy, too "not at all special but way too special" and less adult than her YA but I love it. Say what you will but Maas can create a world. Can't wait to start the next one but if she pulls a Tamlin I'll riot!

Laughterhp Haha, pulls a Tamlin 🤣 3mo

LitStephanie Your review is so spot on. And actually, I would be OK with her pulling a Tamlin because I was really disappointed with how easily Bryce forgives Hunt and decides to give up anything and humiliate herself for that guy. Maas has a habit of writing about strong young women who go crazy for not terribly worthy men. 😆 3mo
FantasyChick @LitStephanie You are exactly right! It drives me nuts that she does that to her characters. They dont deserve it. Since I've been reading HOSAB I am definitely starting to rethink my "Hunt is endgame" decision ? 3mo
LitStephanie @FantasyChick is HOSAB the second book in this series? I am going to wait for your review, LOL. 3mo

As always I'm unsure of my #weekendreading plans. I am finishing my reread on HOEAB which I've been working on all week in preparation for HOSAB which was SUPPOSED to be here yesterday. I can forgive the delay due to the massive flooding and flash freezing that followed I guess though. 😑 I did download the audiobook too so I might keep my plan and continue on anyway. If not, a little historical fiction may be in order 🤔

@Andrew65

Andrew65 Hope you had a good weekend of reading. 3mo
