Gangster Nation | Tod Goldberg
post image
Pickpick

I finished Gangster Nation last weekend. What a fun continuation of the series! I never would have guessed I would like a gangster book; I only bought the first in the series because my friend asked me to go see the author with her. Now I‘m anxiously waiting for the time to read the final installment!
Read if you like gangster stories, Jewish mc, anti-hero, snarky, dark humor, series, thrillers

I finished this epic history/biography about the Great Migration, the period of time between 1910-1970 when Black people escaped the south to get away from Jim Crow laws only to be welcomed in the north & west with more racism.
I love how the author chose 3 delightful people who migrated & fully shared their stories while tying it into a broader scope of American history. I‘m grieving not being able to read about them anymore.

So far I‘ve read 56/120 pages toward my #20in4 Readathon goal. I need to finish by Friday for book club (271 pages to go)!

I just noticed when I posted this picture it says at the top, “…an absolute delight to read.” I must not have gotten to the delightful part yet! 😅 Though I would say it‘s definitely “profound” & “necessary.”

I‘ve also read 11 pages from Beyond the Hundredth Meridian- it‘s my “purse book” since my other book is 600 pages.

Yesterday was such an exciting day! My friend of 22 years launched her first published book! When I very first met this talented lady she told me she was a writer, & that is who she is to the core. I‘ve watched her through the years grow, evolve, & never give up on her dream despite the rejection letters and obstacles life put in her way.
📕 You can buy her book of essays on grief from Barnes & Noble. I can verify it IS something she might say.

I received this from the LibraryThing Early Reviewer program.

👻 This is a unique coming-of-age story about a teenage girl who lives in a graveyard with her dad who works there. A mystery, a supernatural resident, romance, and indigenous values are layered in, making this a book I would recommend to others and that I won't soon forget. Bonus points for the comedic chihuahua sidekick.

I picked this up at a book sale, drawn in by the title and cover illustration, not realizing it‘s book 14 in a series of 25. I gave it a try anyway and it was able to stand alone. It‘s a cozy mystery taking place at a Renaissance Festival in England, with a bit of magical realism thrown in (Aunt Dimity is a dead friend the mc can talk to through a journal). Fun but average story.

Yesterday I finished this for some #summerween fun. It takes the legend of the rogarou & combines it with a modern day indigenous thriller. It was a fast read, & I appreciated the clever ending.
Bombadil appreciates all stories starring scary black dogs (like him).
Read if you like criticism of overreaching Christian organizations, indigenous main characters, strong women, or married couples in love.

KathyWheeler When my husband and I were first married, in the 80s, we used to read this comic, Alpha Flight, with a character, North Star, that we were sure was going to be the first out gay character that we knew of. Instead, they chickened out and made him a terrorist instead. Because that was better? We were so disappointed and annoyed. I‘ll have to check this out. 3mo

Pickpick

Last week I read The Hearts of Horses by Molly Gloss. It takes place in Oregon so I thought it would be the perfect choice for our trip…and it was. Very engaging horse story! Read if you like Black Beauty.

Catching up with @Leftcoastzen ‘s posts reminded me I never shared my haul from the VNSA book sale last month. I haven‘t been since 2019 so I made up for lost time: 28 books for $53, and all the money goes to charity!
In this stack, 2 books from authors I like, and 9 on a whim.
Good times!
Posting as I‘m getting ready to go book shopping later today. 😂😊. I haven‘t read any of them yet.

Leftcoastzen It‘s almost embarrassing the amount of great titles are there. Most are in nice shape as well. As time goes by I find less vintage, but that makes sense! 6mo
PaperbackPirate Someone else I know usually gets a lot of nonfiction there and left a little disappointed this year. I felt initially like there were fewer books and that the prices were higher, yet I left with more books than I‘ve ever bought before and paid less per book overall. 🤷🏼‍♀️ @Leftcoastzen (edited) 6mo
