Murder is Easy | Agatha Christie

3. Murder is Easy features several gruesome murders, more than we typically see in a Christie novel. Which murder sticks out to you, and why is it murder by infected cat ear? 🤢

I'm trying to get caught up, dear #agathachristieclubR2 members! This month has been awesome but insane, between a trip to Europe (with several bookish stops that I somehow didn't post) and really intense committee work. As a result, it took me forever to get through this book so I just finished last week. Posting some questions now, with May's selection questions to come later this weekend:

1. Did you like this book? Why or why not?

Hercule Poirot's Christmas | Agatha Christie
post image

5. Hercule Poirot's Christmas centers around the murder of a mentally abusive parent and his children, similar to the plot and characters of Appointment with Death, which we read last month. Which family did you prefer to read about, and why? Did one book have more psychological insight than the other?

#agathachristieclubR2

bthegood I feel the Christmas book was done better and I preferred this book . I feel it was more about the psyche of a powerful man and his money and I felt Christie let the reader see what drove the father to his cruelty, whereas in Appointment for Death I felt the mom (stepmom? I can't remember) was just mean - not sure why she was so cruel. Thanks for the questions and hosting😊 12mo

4. Did you think that Christie created a good sense of Christmas in the book? Why do you think she picked that time to center her novel?

#agathachristieclubR2

bthegood I don't feel it had a good sense of Christmas - short of it being the reason everyone came home and there were decorations - I think she picked it as a time when families do come together and try to reconcile past hurts. 12mo
Gissy Well, it is connected with what Poirot discussed with Colonel Johnson, is Christmas time a season of good cheer, an unlikely season for crime as indicated by Colonel Johnson? Or Is Christmas a season where hypocrisy, mental strain, physical malaise will burst until cataclysm occurs? Interesting discussion between these two about this aspect (pages74-76). So, this murder will proof what Poirot analyzed about Christmas and a person dark side.Genious 11mo

3. The Lee family is large and sprawling, with many sons, their wives, and some surprise members. Did you enjoy their dynamic? How did you feel about the blood relatives of Simeon Lee vs. those who had married into the family?

#agathachristieclubR2

bthegood I thought Christie did a good job with the family dynamics - the characters felt real - as if that is how the siblings would be compared to the in-laws - 🙂 12mo
Gissy Yes I liked to see the dynamic of this dysfunctional family, their relationship between all these characters. Each son represented something in the novel. Simeon was a despicable character, terrible, his sons were part of what he was, and as Poirot said, interesting Ives, extended co-dependent relationships. The murder was a reflection of who he was as a person and what the character felt about Simeon, “The character of the dead man”. 11mo

2. This novel is a locked-room mystery. Are you a fan of that subgenre, and did you find Christie's take on it believable/plausible? How did you feel about the intensely gruesome murder, especially compared to Christie's normal depictions of murder?

#agathachristieclubR2

bthegood I like the locked room mystery and I didn't feel the murder was very gruesome - of course I read a lot of horror😊 12mo
Laughterhp I love locked room mysteries and the unraveling of what happened. It might have been gruesome for the time, but I didn‘t think it was that gruesome. I‘ve definitely read worse! 12mo
Gissy Yes, I liked locked room mysteries, it gives me the idea will be more related with psychological aspect. The gruesome murder scene and comments from family members about the scene was so interesting, another curious psychological aspect of why they chose those phrases, they left an impact on them when they read those books. It's time for our #agathachristieclubR2 questions! And I'm on time! It's a (Hercule Poirot's) Christmas miracle.

As always, please tag anyone who has already commented to keep the conversation flowing.

1. Did you like this book? Why or why not?

bthegood I liked it - I like this type of story, and I think Christie does it well. I had read Murder for Christmas by Francis Duncan before this one - the two are very similar - so I did keep thinking I had read this before but I had not😊 12mo
Laughterhp I‘ve read this book twice now and I do like it. Each time is an experience and I really like this mystery. 12mo
Gissy I haven‘t post my review yet but I really enjoyed this book, I‘m always late in my readings🤷🏽‍♀️🙄
I liked the way characters are analyzed to find the murderer, simple? unreal? Well, maybe but is fascinated to see the psychological aspect of these analysis. Liked that sarcastic humor at times and Poirot narcissist personality...Reading it with the audiobook you just give life to those characters.
This is a re-read to me.

3. Appointment with Death tackles the abusive behaviors of a parent. How sensitively did you think this was handled? What would you keep and what would you change?

(Bonus question: why on earth is this Southeast Asian diety on the cover of a book set in Jordan?)

#agathachristieclubR2

bthegood During the time period in which she wrote it was handled appropriately. 13mo
Gissy In terms of the story, well I would not change anything because it was so interesting to see all this intrigue, mystery and dysfunctional characters. You can see some degree of dysfunctional families in real life. In terms of how this woman was with her daughters and sons, well in reality, I will change everything. But as a story, nothing. It represents this author‘s writing style. 13mo
See All 8 Comments
TheAromaofBooks I think she did a good job shedding a light on this emotional/psychological abuse, at a time when outsiders would only see her as being a “good mother“ who takes care of her children and makes sure their physical needs are being met, but Christie shows that there are other ways to be a terrible parent besides physical abuse and neglect. @bthegood @Gissy 13mo
TheAromaofBooks As for the cover, I swear half the time they are just pulling random clipart and sticking them with random titles! 😂 (edited) 13mo
ferskner @bthegood @Gissy @TheAromaofBooks it was hard to read a lot of the terrible things she does to her kids! And also really hard to see how much they didn't stand up to her, but I think that was a smart choice because it shows how much an outsider can see vs someone who is suffering the abuse. I'm a huge sucker for dysfunctional rich family stories, but usually they don't rely on full-scale abuse like this. The adaptation turns it into ⬇️ 13mo
ferskner physical abuse and while that was also horrifying, I thought that the emotional and mental abuse angle was more chilling to read. The way they're all hollow shells of people....I wish I'd liked the ending better because I think this could have been one of her most interesting psychological novels. 13mo
bthegood @ferskner @Gissy @TheAromaofBooks for the times I think she wrote what she thought she knew, I have a hard time believing, understanding better today how lasting physical and psychological abuse is, that the family would all recover so quickly and lead such normal lives. 13mo

2. Christie famously wrote in the introduction to the serialized version of this book, "There have been moments when I have felt: 'Why-why-why did I ever invent this detestable, bombastic, tiresome little creature!" Why do you think she felt this way?

#agathachristieclubR2

bthegood Is she writing this about Poirot? If so, maybe she tired of her popular characters 🤔 13mo
Gissy About Mrs. Boynton? Maybe because it represents the worst, dark side of the humane being? Control, psychological abuse, nothing physical but how powerful and destructive you can be only with words and control🤔🤷🏽‍♀️ 13mo
See All 7 Comments
TheAromaofBooks I think she is referring to Poirot... I've read that she never expected him to become popular/that she would write multiple books with him as a character. So I think some of the silly little foibles that were fun as a one-off would become tiresome book after book. It would be hard to keep Poirot from becoming a caricature of himself, I think! @bthegood @Gissy 13mo
ferskner @bthegood @Gissy @TheAromaofBooks LOL this why I shouldn't be trying to do this at 1:30am 🤣. Yes, she wrote this about Poirot. 13mo
ferskner @bthegood @TheAromaofBooks @Gissy I think Sarah is right that character traits that seemed fun to write about at first could easily become annoying, especially since Christie had to basically be in his head. I'm so glad she didn't stop writing him, though! 13mo
bthegood @ferskner @Gissy @TheAromaofBooks Poirot is fine occasionally but not my favorite sleuth - I can see why she may have written that comment. 13mo

As always, please tag all previous commenters to keep the conversation flowing.

1. Did you enjoy this book? Why or why not?

bthegood Overall, I enjoyed this book. I enjoyed getting to know the characters and the family. Felt the twist at end was okay but stretching it. 13mo
Gissy Yes! I haven‘t post my review yet in Litsy but I really enjoyed it. I liked those psychological analysis made by Gerard, Sarah and Poirot. Also I forgot how narcissistic and arrogant Poirot could be but I like him☺️ 13mo

TheAromaofBooks I did enjoy this one. Christie always does such a good job making you not feel too bad about the person who has gotten themselves murdered 😂 @bthegood @Gissy 13mo
Gissy @TheAromaofBooks Yes☺️ 13mo
ferskner @bthegood @Gissy @TheAromaofBooks haha those are all good points! Mrs. Boynton really is one of the worst victims. This one was okay for me, I think because of Ellie's point that the ending kind of comes out of left field. It doesn't play unfair, but the whole book is essentially red herrings and I didn't feel quite as satisfied with the solution as I normally do. But I loved the characters! 13mo
bthegood @ferskner @Gissy @TheAromaofBooks your comments made me realize that yes, Christie does allow us to not feel too bad about the victim 🙂 13mo

3. These stories are closer to novellas than her typical short stories. Did you think this was successful? Would you have preferred them to be longer or shorter?

#agathachristieclubR2

TheAromaofBooks I'm not a short story person, so the longer the better haha I did feel like there was a little more room to develop some characters beyond names, especially in the story where the guy gets shot in the locked study - there's a whole house party there, and these slightly longer stories helped me feel like I had time to learn a little more about them. 1y
ferskner @TheAromaofBooks I also don't always love short stories and prefer the novels, although I do really like the Christie short story adaptations. These had a nice balance to them to make everything feel a little more fleshed out, and I thought made the solutions less obvious. In a lot of the stories, there are so few clues that any piece of info is glaringly important, and I didn't have that feeling here. The novels hide so much more! 1y
TheAromaofBooks That is definitely true, although I hadn't thought about it that way before - the novels do allow a lot more time/opportunities for red herrings and confusion! 1y

2. Which story was your favorite, and why?

#agathachristieclubR2

TheAromaofBooks I enjoyed them all and none of them particularly leaped out at me, but probably Dead Man's Mirror just because I love a locked-room murder. 1y
ferskner @TheAromaofBooks that's interesting because I think that was my least favorite! I was like "the bullet hit the gong and only one person heard it?!?!?" I agree on the locked room element, but I felt like she was stretching to make it work. I think maybe Murder in the Mews was my favorite? I liked that it was committing a crime by using another person's death (which is messed up for many reasons!). 1y

1. Did you enjoy this book? Why or why not?

Laughterhp I read this one a long time ago but then tried to reread it. I wasn‘t feeling the audiobook, so I stopped my reread. From what I remember, I did like this one, but wasn‘t my favorite. 1y
TheAromaofBooks These weren't my all-time favorites, but that's partially because I'm not a big short-story reader. Still, Christie does fool me every time, so there's that 😂 @Laughterhp 1y
See All 6 Comments
ferskner @Laughterhp @TheAromaofBooks agreed, I liked this overall but I don't think the stories are her most memorable. But meh Poirot is still pretty great! (Unless it's The Big Four - that book is dead to me.) 1y
TheAromaofBooks @ferskner - LOL Now I kind of need to know what about The Big Four emotionally devastated you! 😂 1y
ferskner @TheAromaofBooks @Laughterhp haha I just remember reading The Big Four for the first time and feeling so betrayed. Like I thought all Christies were perfect and so to realize that there could be one I didn't like was so devastating! Now I know there are several I don't like, but that one is the worst. 1y

4. What did you think of Christie's portrayal of Egypt in the novel? Were you satisfied with the level of detail, or did you want more? Was her depiction of the country and its people enjoyable or difficult to read?

#agathachristieclubR2

TheAromaofBooks Definitely the weak point in the story - it feels like this story could have taken place anywhere, as long as it was on a tour boat! I definitely could have used more Egyptian descriptions!! 1y
MrsK It was as much like a snowed in manor mystery with the boat stepping in for the manor. You know Egypt is out there, but you can‘t get to it. 1y
Emu I agree with the others. This could have taken place almost anywhere on a tour boat or a smaller cruise. 1y

3. Did you feel about the characters of Jackie, Linnet, and Simon? Did you have sympathy for any of them, or did you dislike them? How does Poirot view each of them?

#agathachristieclubR2

TheAromaofBooks I both disliked and had sympathy for them. Each was so narrow-minded in their own way, and so discontented. In some books, Poirot takes on that sort of fatherly/advise-giving aspect, and I actually loved his warning about letting evil in, because it will take over. I really felt like the pacing/character revelations in this one was really well done. 1y
MrsK I couldn‘t like any of them. Each had an objective which they would see fulfilled… no matter the cost to anyone else. 1y

2. Death on the Nile has been adapted for the screen many times. What do you think makes this book so attractive to directors and screenwriters over other Christie novels?

#agathachristieclubR2

TheAromaofBooks I think the closed-yet-exotic setting definitely lends itself to the film (although I've never watched any of those adaptations). This one also has a reasonable number of characters instead of 37 different villagers, so I think that helps! 😂 1y
MrsK I agree with the @TheAromaofBooks re: a closed setting. It heightens the tension which makes for a good movie. 1y

4. The Spiritualist movement was extremely popular in the 19th and early 20th centuries. What did you think of the Tripp sisters and their influence on the case?

#agathachristieclubR2

TheAromaofBooks Honestly loved the Tripp sisters, even if they seemed a little crazy 😂 I like how Christie uses spiritualism gatherings to further the plot of different books - similar to the séance in The Sittaford Mystery. It doesn't seem like Christie was much of a believer herself, as they always seem to have a logical explanation for eerie events! 2y
ferskner @TheAromaofBooks I loved them too! Both the comic relief they add and the slight spookiness to the book. I love whenever Christie deploys spiritualism because it seems so of its time. (If you've seen the adaptation, those elements are extra good!) 2y

3. When the murderer is revealed in the classic "Poirot explains it all" chapter, she is already dead. Were you okay with that? Did it impact your enjoyment of the reveal at all?

#agathachristieclubR2

TheAromaofBooks I thought the ending was cleverly done and enjoyed the big reveal. I think it's interesting when Christie has Poirot sort of “play God“ by allowing the murderer to make the choice to take their own life - it's not the only time he has done so throughout the series. I have mixed feelings about it, but in the end, it does seem like justice is served? Like I said, I'm conflicted about that aspect. 2y
ferskner @TheAromaofBooks Yeah, I have mixed feelings about it. I don't mind when Poirot chooses to play God - it gives a lot of insight into his character when it happens - but having her already gone seemed a bit....meh? Maybe Christie was trying to pull off another shock ending that reinvents the genre, like with Roger Ackroyd, but I don't think it quite lands. 2y

#agathachristieclubR2 friends: I'm so sorry for being so late with this info. My hold for Dumb Witness in May came in super late (like at the end of the month) and I'd hoped to read it quickly to keep us on schedule, but there are too many things going on right now for me to be able to get to it. So I'm hoping y'all are okay with holding off until next month instead. I apologize! I miss having reading time.

Librarybelle No worries from me - I myself am so far behind on reading these! 🤦🏻‍♀️ 2y
ferskner @Librarybelle I'm hoping that me being overwhelmed will help you get caught up ;) 2y

Librarybelle I think I need many, many months to get caught up 😂 I‘m seriously contemplating starting an Agatha Christie book discussion group at the library so I can catch up with this group! 2y
suvata I have decided to join you guys. A little late but better than never. Dumb Witness coming right up… 2y
ferskner @suvata yay!!!! 2y
bthegood No worries. It's on my list for July - thanks - 🌞 (edited) 2y
TheAromaofBooks I'm here for the discussion whenever we get to it!! I also really enjoy having a Christie “assignment“ as I've read all of them before so love having some direction for rereads!! 😂 2y
sarahbellum I‘m a few books behind myself. Next up for me is The ABC Murders, so feel free to take all the time you need 🙂 2y
Emu No worries. I‘m way behind anyway. 🙈 2y

ferskner @zezeki @BarbaraBB I don't listen to the songs beforehand (other than Denmark and Sweden because I follow those national finals) so I'm not qualified to say, but I adored Ukraine and Moldova last night! 2y

3. Christie brings in several detectives from past novels. Did you enjoy revising these characters? Which detectives would you have liked to be included in this group?

#agathachristieclubR2

TheAromaofBooks I always love seeing Superintendent Battle. He's one of my favorites. 2y
ferskner @TheAromaofBooks I think it's fun to see these characters together, especially when I don't necessarily love the books in which they appear. It reminds me how great the characters are and how I would have liked to see more of them in other (better) outings. 2y

2. This book introduces Ariadne Oliver, who is widely considered to be a stand-in for Christie herself. What did you think of this character? What commentary is Christie making on her role as the author?

#agathachristieclubR2

TheAromaofBooks I am not always a fan of authors writing themselves (or versions of themselves) into their stories, but I absolutely love Ariadne. She's so funny and self-depreciating, and listening to her complain about how she randomly decided to make her detective a Finn and now she's stuck with him just brings me joy every time haha 2y
ferskner @TheAromaofBooks YES! I totally know what you mean about some of the issues of authors writing themselves into their books, but Christie definitely strikes the perfect balance. She's commenting on the ridiculousness of her situation while also being aware that it's ridiculous that she feels that way, you know what I mean? 2y
TheAromaofBooks Exactly, and she doesn't take herself too seriously. One series I read the author wrote herself in and basically made this character a paragon of every kind of virtue and it annoyed me SO much how she spent all this time basically bragging about herself and how amazing she was. Christie makes herself an absent-minded, somewhat ridiculous middle-aged woman who scatters apple cores everywhere she goes, and I love it. 2y

#agathachristieclubR2: I'm trying to get caught up on stuff, I have no idea what month we're on, so here we go!

Please remember to tag anyone who has previously commented!

1. Did you like this book? Why or why not?

TheAromaofBooks This isn't my favorite Christie, but I did enjoy it. I really liked the way that she made this a sort of “locked room“ type mystery with only three possible suspects. 2y
ferskner @TheAromaofBooks I agree! I think it's also really fun that she brings so many past characters together. If only Miss Marple had been there! 2y

I read a bit of this book at a Silent Reading Club event at a fancy Nashville hotel earlier this week. It felt very fitting to read a book set at a luxury hotel while at a luxury hotel.

BarbaraBB Sounds very nice! 2y

4. This novel seems to rely on psychological insight of the victim more than other Christie novels, perhaps because she was based on a real person, Catherine Wooley. Do you think her assessments are accurate, or fair? Did you like this kind of characterization? #agathachristieclubR2

3. Poirot makes quite a late appearance in the book. Did you think this worked? Did it benefit the plot or make it less enjoyable for you? #agathachristieclubR2
