I've been totally off the Litsy radar all week with the Jane Austen festival, visiting family, and a webinar that I hosted yesterday for work. I'm super behind on my #cozyinthesun tally and my #brcr2 updates. But to get back in the swing of things, here's my sister's cute dog Sally who has been my main distraction! I love her.

Oh my word, what a weekend! I met my sister in Louisville to attend our first Jane Austen Festival, and it was AMAZING. I wasn't expecting the level of commitment and quality that went into everything. Most people were dressed up impeccably, with high quality costumes and incredible details. The lectures and vendors were phenomenal, and we went to Regency beauty and perfume workshops that blew our minds. I will definitely be back next year!

Weeeeeellllllllllll......it was a pretty epic week for eating, I'm not going to lie. BUT this ice cream pie I made for the 4th of July had tons of fruit, so that counts for something, right?? I also didn't make my exercise goals of 4+ days of activity, but I did a ton of walking yesterday and today with my visiting friend, so I probably made up the difference. 3/12 books read. #bfc #bfcr2 #bookfitnesschallenge @wanderinglynn

I've loved seeing all the #cozyinthesun tags today! My goal is to always have at least one cozy going at all times, whether it's in print or audio since I do have some non-cozy books I have to get to this month.

I'll be basing my tally of finished cozies on review posts, so be sure to use them to be entered for our prize! And post your cozy progress using the #cozyinthesun hashtag just because it's fun. :)

The end of #bfcr2 saw me scrambling to use farmers market produce, and I'm excited that I used the entire vegetable with this carrot top pesto and chimichurri. Mehso-so

I used to hate hate hate Southern fiction, and now I'm totally fascinated by it. This is set in South Carolina and it felt really authentic to my small town experiences there. It has a compelling family mystery, which reminded me a lot of my beloved We Have Always Lived in the Castle, but the modern sections weren't as emotionally engaging as they wanted to be.

#litsyatoz @BookishMarginalia

MaleficentBookDragon It's interesting how our tastes change. After much forced Dickens in high school, I refused out of hand to read anything by a British author for a very long time. Now I read A LOT of British fiction and watch BBC series all the time. I'm a bit obsessed. 😄 1mo
Caterina Ohhh I LOVE We Have Always Lived in the Castle, and I grew up in SC. Would you recommend this despite the so-so rating? 1mo
AmberWB Hi @ferskner ! I have you for the #summersantagoespostal swap! However- your address wasn‘t in the email I got! If you could email it to me, that would be great! 97lion@gmail.com 1mo
ferskner @MaleficentBookDragon I know! I love to think about the catalysts to change our tastes. Mine was definitely my move to the South and suddenly understanding just how unique it is from the rest of the country. 1mo
ferskner @Caterina I think overall, yes. I don't think I would have cared without the SC element, so that might appeal to you too. Where did you grow up? I lived in Beaufort for about 6 years. 1mo

I LOVE culinary memoirs (culinary anything, really), but this is something beyond the typical chef's story. The author asks hard questions about race, class, ageism, pride, and what constitutes a success story. If you're interested in the food world, this is a must read.

I very nearly quit this because it started out as a young man's sexual awakening in - you guessed it - the 1960s, and I can think of few things that interest me less. But it turns into a portrait of a relationship's heartbreaking collapse, and I was left with shifting opinions, no easy answers, and lots of tears. A really wonderful book.

Square Books | Oxford, MS (Bookstore)
post image

My last stop for my epic bookish weekend was Square Books in Oxford. I had so many people tell me I had to visit, and it was amazing! There are actually three locations on the square: the main shop; a second location with "lifestyle" titles, gifts, and some used books; and a children's store. I bought a bunch of cookbooks at Off Square Books and rectified my lack of Faulkner at the main store. I stayed an hour later than I should have! ?

MrBook 😁👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 1mo
robinb This pic makes me a little homesick. 😊 Glad you enjoyed your Oxford visit...it‘s a wonderful little town. 💙 If you go back for another visit, go by Faulkner‘s home (Rowan Oak). It‘s not far from the square and worth the visit. (edited) 1mo

robinb @BarbaraBB Cool! I grew up about 20 minutes from Oxford. Worked for 6 years at Ole Miss (The University of Mississippi) before marrying and moving to Alabama. 😊 1mo
BarbaraBB @robinb In the 90s I travelled through Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Tennessee. I was deeply impressed and fascinated by the states, the nature and the people. Oxford was one of my favorite places that trip (with New Orleans of course, and the bayous and the pre-Catherina coast, and so on 😀) 1mo

Next stop on my bookish weekend: William Faulkner's Rowan Oak. I decided to make a full weekend out of my trip to Mississippi, especially when I realized how close to Oxford I was. I had the best time! Even though I realized I hadn't read more than A Rose for Emily (😞), I really enjoyed exploring the house and grounds, complete with Faulkner's hand-written outlines on the walls. The Talk in Jane Austen | Jane Austen Society of North America

Last weekend I went to Holly Springs, MS for a meetup between the Middle Tennessee and Mississippi chapters of JASNA, and it was SO. FUN. There were two speakers covering parties in Austen's books and silhouette representations during the period, and tons of Austen-y goodies and conversation. Plus I think I had the most Southern lunch ever, all ladies' garden club style. All in an incredibly charming town. And that was just Saturday! More later.

Oh what this book could have been! Instead of giving advice, it spent most pages complaining about extroverts. I skimmed the end and didn't find anything I didn't already know (spoiler: find your charisma by placing yourself in situations where you feel comfortable. Summer Is Here | Heidi Pross Gray
post image

I almost didn't go down this path during my #audiowalk because I was trying to #ssdgm, but it was too pretty to resist. There's still a bit of blossoming going on, but pictures like this make me realize that summer is here in Nashville and that a hoodie was a terrible choice for my walk. 😆 #bookfitnesschallenge #bfc @wanderinglynn

TheSpineView I love walking outside even in hot weather. Keep up the good work! 2mo
4thhouseontheleft I‘m next door in N.C. 😃 Today was pretty mild, we‘ve actually had an unusually mild May, by this time we‘re often wishing the neighborhood pool would open early! 2mo
CoverToCoverGirl Wish is was summertime here... heading into several days of cold dreary rain. Great spot to go for a walk! (edited) 2mo

ferskner @4thhouseontheleft this is just my second spring here, and I remember it being much colder last year at this time. So I have no idea what I should expect. :) 2mo

ferskner @wanderinglynn Yes! I'm sorry, my sister and her kids were in town this weekend and it ended up being much busier than I'd expected (as it usually is with kids :) ). I'll get my update posted ASAP! 2mo

I remember watching the adaptation for this and finding the solution so intriguing. It's not great Christie, but, as usual, it satisfies. #agathachristieclub @Bambolina_81 #pop19 #bookwithaquestioninthetitle

This is FABULOUS idea @wanderinglynn! Since my surgeries two (!) years ago, my physical activity has tanked and I feel it every day in so many ways. Therefore my goal is 30+ minutes of any kind of physical activity per day (cardio, leisurely walks, strength training, yoga, etc.), and 12 books read. Join in, everyone!

I'd planned on taking a long audiowalk this afternoon to enjoy the gorgeous Tennessee weather, but my chronic headaches strike again. Instead, I'll admire my not-yet-planted herbs and tomatoes and read this book for work.

Librarybelle I hate headaches! Hope you feel better soon! 2mo
ferskner @Librarybelle Thank you! Unfortunately it's a nearly daily occurrence for me but I waited too long to take my medication for it. Bleh. 2mo

Greatest. Book. Event. Venue. Ever.

I was mildly interested in Mary Norris's memoir on her lifelong love for the Greek language, but when I heard it was being held at Nashville's Parthenon (with Ann Patchett moderating!), I had to be there.

Mitch OMG what a setting! Have fun 3mo

Reggie I kinda want her head to fall off and tell someone that they‘re hubris will not go unpunished. How Andromeda will have to be chained to the rocks as Poseidon releases the Kraken. Lol-Clash of the Titans- the Harry Hamlin one. Lol nice pic!!! Looks like an unforgettable venue. 3mo

The Curse of Magical Realism continues. I was totally in love with June and Saul's relationship and their fantastic sparkling dialogue, but as soon as the magical realism elements crept into the story, my brain shut off. It's like a light switch. I want it to have either more magic or none at all.

Libby1 I feel the same way about magical realism! It‘s my kryptonite. 3mo
ferskner @Libby1 that's a great way to put it! I can't figure out why it bores me so much. 3mo

Panpan

A pan isn't totally fair since I'm sure I missed allusions known to fans of Elizabeth Bishop, but I didn't enjoy any moment of reading this. The book's marketing is deceptive: the orphan rescue element is very minor and will disappoint readers who were intrigued by the premise of Bishop's missing weeks.

A fantastic evening at Parnassus to listen to the amazing Ruth Reichl. She single-handedly got me into food writing, which I didn't know was a thing before I stumbled upon Garlic and Sapphires 10+ years ago. It opened an entire glorious world to me. Bonus: Ann Patchett interviewed her! AND @Booksnchill snagged us these rad front row seats (thank you!!!!).

I went to my first Jane Austen Society of North America (JASNA) meeting today! It was a discussion of the Gothic novels that influenced Northanger Abbey, and I think I may have been the only fan of Gothic lit but it was still a great event. Now time to settle in for more time with this novel and leftover lemon cake.

Daisey I enjoyed this novel so much more than I expected! 3mo

Today's #readathon hasn't gone as expected! I was worried last night about an infected-looking spot on Richard, and thankfully the vet could fit him in this morning. He's fine now, and I can finally get to my book. Watching a hamster get a tiny tiny exam isn't a bad way to spend the morning, though. :) #hamstersoflitsy

Mehso-so

Meh. I finished this only a couple of weeks ago and I had to look up the description to remind myself what it was about. Not a good sign.

I like that asexual teens can find representation here, but Alice's relationships were her friends and family are strange (and borderline abusive), and the "cute" parenthetical phrases got old fast. And don't get me started on how library work is portrayed. The cover is great through!

#pop19 #debutnovel

8little_paws Yeah I hated the best friend!!! 4mo
ferskner @8little_paws Right??? And her family was so awful! Alice's cutesy-ness grated on me too, though. I kept forgetting I was reading about an adult and imagined her as a 15 year old. 4mo

Somehow this is the only good picture I have from the fantastic #NashvilleLitsyMeetup yesterday, and it's not even book related! It's the Hermitage Hotel downtown, and if we DID walk right past Jon Bon Jovi, I totally missed it. I love spending time with a group that gets excited about such things, besides the fantastic book talk. :) Thanks to @Booksnchill @britt_brooke @BooksTeasAndBookishThings @HeatherBookNerd @Elma @Alfrazier21 @adnama82!

HeatherBookNerd I stand by my Bon Jovi sighting! 4mo
BooksTeasAndBookishThings @HeatherBookNerd it really was my first thought, he kind of looks like Bon Jovi, but then I just kind of shook my head and was like, “No, I don‘t think that was him...” I am still not sure lol 4mo
britt_brooke I totally missed it, too. You and I were talking and apparently completely oblivious. 😆 4mo
