I couldn't for the life of me get a decent picture of Jojo Moyes at her author talk at work today, but she was so wonderful to listen to and does a decent Kentucky accent!

Ridiculously, I've had an advance copy of this since 2014 and am only now jumping on the bandwagon. It is sooooooo adorable! I loved the tone and that Lara Jean felt like a real teenager (I find most YA to have overly mature characters). I can't wait to get to the next one!

Mehso-so

This mix of women's lives and relationships with sci-fi didn't quite work for me. I was much more interested in the comedic portrayal of a Silicon Valley workaholic than the tech-gone-wrong storyline.

I was overwhelmed by family stuff this weekend, but here are the discussion questions for The Mysterious Affair at Styles! Please see the comments below: #agathachristieclubR2

ferskner 1.) Is this your first time reading Christie? What was your first impression? 2w
ferskner 2.) If this isn't your first Christie, what brings you back? 2w
ferskner 3.) What do you think if Poirot as an investigator? And Hastings as his sidekick? 2w
See All 29 Comments
ferskner 4.) How does social class play a role in this mystery? 2w
ferskner 5.) How does Christie build suspense in the novel? How do you like her style compared to other mystery authors? 2w
ferskner 6.) Do you enjoy Christie's red herrings? Which is your favorite in the book? 2w
ferskner 7.) Did you find any flaws in the mystery? Do you enjoy looking for them, or do you want to be carried along for the ride? 2w
ferskner @batsy @TheAromaofBooks @Librarybelle @AnneCecilie @k.reads I remember you participating off the top of my head, but please tag anyone else you know would like to join in! 2w
Librarybelle This was not my first time reading Christie, nor my first time reading this story. I‘ve always loved Christie‘s books for their readability. However, I‘m not a fan of her digs at minorities and those of differing religious views. Poirot can slightly get on my nerves at times - he‘s brilliant, and he knows it. Hastings I found even more annoying this second time through. He‘s almost like a comic foil to Poirot‘s little grey cells... 2w
Librarybelle ...I find that wealth plays a role in quite a few of Christie‘s books. This one has the upstairs versus downstairs feel, with both serving staff and houseguests involved in the investigation. Christie is a marvel at the “locked room” set up - a murder in an impossible situation with so many red herrings thrown into the story. The broken coffee cup. Was it or was it not poison? Who wore the disguise? It was clever to have the killer basically... 2w
Librarybelle ...in plain sight, having everyone suspect him then claiming his innocence. I‘m not sure I have a favorite, per se, and I admit that though I‘ve read this before, I completely forgot who the murderer is! I‘m sure there were flaws - it‘s not a perfect mystery and novel, but Christie shows her talent. Great questions!! I have to think on these some more! 2w
Lizpixie 1. Nope, been reading Christie since my aunt gave me a 2ndhand copy of Sparkling Cyanide when I was 10yrs old. I‘ve now read every book at least twice! 2. Characters & plot. She‘s a master at both. 3. Poirot is very arrogant, but he has every right to be, though he does rub me the wrong way sometimes. Hastings annoys me a bit, not his fault, unfortunately she‘s written him as a bit stupid.👇👇👇 2w
Lizpixie 4. Class defines British society in every way, if you‘re lower you‘ll always be regarded with suspicion & if you‘re higher no one will question you. 5. She builds it with impossible situations, like a locked door mystery, and by putting a teaspoon of suspicion on everyone so there‘s no trust. Her style can seem a bit dated, but she was the original at a lot of this stuff. 6. She can overload on the red herrings occasionally 2w
Lizpixie 6 cont. My favourite in this book is the disguise found in Johns room. 7. Of course there‘s flaws, compared to recent mysteries she can seem a bit dated. The plot can be a bit obvious & predictable, but she was a pioneer in crime. I just go with the story, poking holes ruins it.💁🏻‍♀️ Thanks for resurrecting this, I love my Dame Agatha! #christiecrimeclub 2w
AnneCecilie Christie was one of the first authors I read, when I started reading in my early teens. Then I read some of her books, maybe 5 or 6. Then I didn‘t read her until last year. I‘ve been watching the TV series of both Poirot & Miss Marple, and I want to read the books the series are based on. I like Poirot and find Hastings a little stupid but my impression is based mainly on the series so I‘m interested to find out if that change as I read more.... 2w
AnneCecilie Social class plays a huge role in the mystery, both in the way the family automatically suspects the outsider, but also how the maids are afraid of betraying their employer by talking to Poirot. I find that Christie is good at pointing the finger at everyone involved and completely confuses me. Something that I didn‘t know, is that you can only be put before a judge once for one crime in the U.K. I have never heard of this being the case in Norway 2w
AnneCecilie So I think I might have missed some of Christie‘s clues concerning the suspect. I don‘t look for flaws, and since I‘m easily fooled I probably wouldn‘t find them either, so I just like to get carried away and enjoy the ride. And feel like Hastings when everything is revealed 😉 your questions really had my thinking and I liked reading your thoughts @Librarybelle and @Lizpixie they got me thinking about the book and some parts a little different 2w
TheAromaofBooks @AnneCecilie @LIibrarybelle @Lizpixie - hey everyone!! Life has been crazy the last couple of days so I am just getting a chance to check out everyone's comments and thoughts!! I'll add a few of my own after I read what all of you have to say. :-) It was fun to revisit Styles as it had been several years since I read this one. 2w
TheAromaofBooks First, to answer @ferskner 's original questions - (1) Definitely not my first time reading Christie, and not even my first time reading this particular book. (2) Honestly, one of the reasons I always come back to Christie is her wry sense of humor. I also love the way that, for the most part, she let's us see the clues as well. 2w
TheAromaofBooks (3) Poirot honestly isn't my favorite Christie character as he is a bit pompous for my taste, but I don't usually mind spending time with him. I'm fond of Hastings despite the fact that I think Christie writes him as slightly *too* oblivious. (4) It's always interesting to me to watch Christie's writing change through time, as she was living through a great deal of change regarding society & class. Here, during WWI, we are starting to see the 2w
TheAromaofBooks breakdown between the classes. (5) I'm a simple girl with simple tastes, so I enjoy Christie's classic approach: set up the characters, kill one of them off in a way that narrows the killer down to someone else within the household, then present clues and red herrings until we have a chance to gather everyone together for the big reveal at the end. I'm not sure I would call this particular story suspenseful as I didn't really fear for anyone 2w
TheAromaofBooks else's lives, but I thought the pacing was good. (6) My favorite red herring here was probably the overheard argument. (7) There were a couple of times where someone seemed so obvious that it was almost ridiculous that Hastings couldn't see it. However, I've read this book multiple times before, so it's possible that that was my subconscious remembering how things went! Overall, I tend to just go along for the ride and enjoy the way things unfold. 2w
TheAromaofBooks I really enjoyed revisiting this one - although instead of reading her second book next, I almost want to jump straight to Poirot's final appearance in Curtain, which does tie back to this one in some ways. Anyway, I'll look forward to rejoining all of you at the end of October to discuss The Secret Adversary, which is actually one of my very favorites as I LOVE Tommy & Tuppence, and also quite enjoy a good (aka rather terrible) spy romp! 2w
ferskner @Librarybelle @Lizpixie @AnneCecilie @TheAromaofBooks I love all your thoughts! I'm very fascinated by the fact that Norway doesn't have double indemnity! I really like this book and I'm astounded that it's her first novel. I definitely have a soft spot for Poirot and I love how Christie writes him - pompous, but a bit tongue in cheek. I really like that the solution is a double bluff (the killer is the original suspect)... 2w
ferskner @Librarybelle @Lizpixie @AnneCecilie @TheAromaofBooks ...something she'll use a few more times! As far as flaws, obviously the racism is an issue, and I also don't get why the killer leaves the torn-up letter in the room. Why not put it in his pocket? Or go get it after the coast is clear? He leaves it there for days! She's not as tight of a plotter as she'll eventually be. 2w
Linsy Okay, so I know I‘m late to the party, but here it goes... This was not my first Christie, but I haven‘t read hat many other than Tommy & Tuppence. This was a reread for me, and I enjoyed it so much more this time than the last! I can‘t tell if Poirot is just rubbing off on me or what. Hastings is a pretty terrible sidekick, but I‘m loving Poirot more and more! But in my head, he‘s Kenneth Branagh. 2w
Linsy The “man of the manor” seems to get so much more leeway than others around Poirot. When people of the town talk of him, they can‘t conceive of their lord being the one who committed the crime, although his family is more than willing to throw him under the bus. I really enjoy how Christie built suspense slowly and methodically. The quietness of it made the suspense even more intense, in my opinion. 2w
Linsy The first time I came to this book, I got really lost with all the herrings and explanations, so I wasn‘t so excited to pick this one up. This time, however, I had the completely opposite experience. Those things built the suspense and enjoyment of it for me. I don‘t know if it was my mood or if I‘m understanding Poirot‘s style better, but I‘m so glad you inspired me to pick it up again! 2w
Linsy I really enjoy just being carried along for the ride. My husband likes pointing out flaws in magicians‘ performances and I‘m always like — No, don‘t spoil the magic! 2w

Two years ago, @Bambolina_81 had the fantastic idea for the #agathachristieclub, where Littens could read Dame Agatha's books in publication order, one a month. It's been a while since the club was active, but we're starting it up again! And starting over. Join us in September with The Mysterious Affair at Styles, with a discussion at the end of the month. I read this because Elizabeth Gilbert spoke at work and she was an interesting speaker, and because I've made fun of this book without reading it and that's not fair. It's better than I expected in some ways, but it deserves a lot of the criticisms. I can't shake the feeling that she uses people at whim.

Hope Rides Again | Andrew Shaffer
post image

It's always a pleasure to visit my favorite bookstore in #Nashville, and even better to visit when someone as entertaining as Andrew Shaffer is promoting his new book. #TheBookshop

mom2bugnbee @ferskner I don't know this store! (To be fair, I live in Mboro, not N'ville, but still!) 2mo
GatheringBooks oooh! i was in nashville a few weeks ago but didn‘t know about this place! i just went to ann patchett‘s 2mo
ferskner @mom2bugnbee weren't you at the meetup when we went to this shop? We went to the tea place and then here and then for pizza? 2mo

ferskner @GatheringBooks Parnassus is very worth your time! This place is on the other side of town and tiny, but it has the most beautiful stuff and you always find something amazing. 2mo
mom2bugnbee @ferskner Yes, yes, yes. Brain fart on my part. I had the names mixed up. 🤦🏻‍♀️ 2mo
ferskner @mom2bugnbee - they did change the name from Her Bookshop to The Bookshop at some point, but I don't know when that happened. Blame that! :) 2mo

Three Act Tragedy (Poirot) | Agatha Christie
post image
Pickpick

Another favorite Christie for me. The solution is chilling and diabolical, and I think quite a bit darker than most of her other books. #agathachristieclub @Bambolina_81 #booked19 #foodorbeverageoncover @Cinfhen @BarbaraTheBibliophage @4thhouseontheleft #readharder #cozymystery @bookriot

raeintheworld I‘ve got this one on hold with Libby. I‘m working through Poirot mysteries in order. 2mo
ferskner @raeintheworld me too! I read a Christie a month, in publication order. We used to have the #agathachristieclub on Litsy but I think I'm the only one still going. :) 2mo
Librarybelle I‘m so far behind in the #agathachristieclub ! Maybe a year or more?? I should probably binge read to catch up...I miss reading her monthly! 2mo
See All 27 Comments
TheAromaofBooks Maybe we need to restart the #agathachristieclub - I would be way into that! I read all her books in published order a few years ago and would love to work through them again. 2mo
ferskner @Librarybelle @TheAromaofBooks YES! I'm pretty far into it so I wouldn't want to start over, but I'd love company. @batsy you in? 2mo
batsy @ferskner Yes! Like you I probably wouldn't start over but I'm trying to keep going from where I left over from reading her books chronologically. I'm not sure how it would work if we're all at different books but it's fun to just keep the club going for us to find each other through the tag and read the comments and reviews :) 2mo
Librarybelle @batsy @TheAromaofBooks What if we had two pieces to this? I‘m so behind that I don‘t mind starting again, and anyone who wants to join in on that piece may do so - read a book a month, with discussion at the end. For those in the middle of this, maybe just continuing where we should be under the original club. I don‘t think it would be too confusing...Littens would have the option to start from the beginning or pick up in the middle of the list. 2mo
TheAromaofBooks @Librarybelle @batsy - maybe keep the original #agathachristieclub but also add a secondary tag to differentiate, like #secondround or something like that? 2mo
Librarybelle I think that would work, @TheAromaofBooks ! 2mo
ferskner @TheAromaofBooks @librarybelle @batsy Honestly, I wouldn't mind taking a break for y'all to get caught up. I'm also behind on where I should be, and but I remember the books well enough that I could join in on discussions at the end of the month, and I'd reread some of my favorites. I am SUPER behind on a bunch of podcasts and series, so this would give me a chance to balance that out again. 2mo
ferskner @TheAromaofBooks @librarybelle @batsy I'm also a big fan of the All About Agatha podcast, where they recap and analyze all the books, so that could help me refresh my memory as well. :)
2mo
batsy @TheAromaofBooks @Librarybelle I'm not sure where we last stopped as a group or where we should be right now; the last one I read following publication order was Lord Edgware Dies. @ferskner That podcast sounds great by the way, thank you for recommending! I'm going to check it out. 2mo
ferskner @batsy it's really fun! They're sometimes pretty catty and I don't always agree with their favorite books (they LOVED The Man in the Brown Suit), but they do discuss the underlying racism and sexism and take into account how well the stories have aged as part of their ranking system. And I always love a ranking system! 2mo
Librarybelle @batsy @TheAromaofBooks @ferskner The next one on the list for me is Peril of End House...no clue how far that is down the list from everyone else. I‘m fine with however we want to do this! 2mo
TheAromaofBooks @Librarybelle @batsy - I've never participated in this type of long-term reading group before, so I'm not sure how it usually works. Do we have an official list somewhere? 2mo
Librarybelle @TheAromaofBooks @batsy We were using the publication list from Agatha Christie‘s website. It has a breakdown chronologically of her works and designated UK titles versus US titles, since a few are different. 2mo
batsy @TheAromaofBooks Hope the link works https://www.agathachristie.com/stories If you scroll down to the bottom it says "download the full list of works" or something and it's a nice handy pdf file :) OK so I'm still a bit clueless about how to proceed from here if we're all at different books ? @Librarybelle 2mo
ferskner @batsy @librarybelle @TheAromaofBooks what do y'all think? I'm fine with taking a reading break to let the group catch up (but still participating in discussions), but if that's crazy then I'll do whatever. I tend to overthink these things. :) 2mo
ferskner @batsy @librarybelle @TheAromaofBooks or maybe we do two a month until we get caught up to @batsy?
2mo
Librarybelle This has been a great discussion! I think I also tend to overthink things. I believe I‘m a couple books away from Lord Edgware, so I‘m close to @batsy . My thought had been maybe some of the newer Littens would like to join in - I‘ve seen a lot of Agatha Christie being read, so kind of why I said maybe to have a start over to reintroduce the idea. But, I‘m totally up for anything! We need Dame Christie to help solve this puzzle! 😂 @TheAromaofBooks (edited) 2mo
batsy @Librarybelle @ferskner Poirot would be appalled at my not so active little grey cells 😂 I think this sounds great; I've no problem with waiting. For newer Littens who are Christie fans, if they'd like to do a readalong in publication order like we are, perhaps like @TheAromaofBooks suggested they can add the #secondround or something tag to their posts? 2mo
TheAromaofBooks @librarybelle @ferskner @batsy - the link definitely worked, and that is a super useful list no matter what we decide to do haha It looks like there are 16 books before Lord Edgeware, so that is almost a year and a half for those ahead to wait. Are there people out there still doing the original list? If no one else has been participating in discussions, I think we can do whatever we want. Anarchy!! 2mo
Librarybelle Haha, anarchy! I don‘t think anyone else has been participating. Maybe we should just keep reading and posting at our own pace?? @TheAromaofBooks @batsy (edited) 2mo
batsy @Librarybelle @TheAromaofBooks I'm down with anarchy! 😆 I think we can do just that? 2mo
ferskner @batsy @TheAromaofBooks @Librarybelle haha this discussion! We're such nerds. I agree with @Librarybelle that I'd like the idea of opening it up to new Littens and also having a monthly discussion so there's a little bit more of a book club feel than the original club had. Can we do that, and maybe call it #agathachristieclubR2 or something like that? I'm happy to spearhead the discussions. Then those ahead can keep reading at our own pace? 2mo
TheAromaofBooks @batsy @Librarybelle - I think it would be great if @ferskner would like to be a gentle guide as to what we are reading next, and to organize the discussion? We have a week until September, so maybe this is a good time to invite people to start? 2mo
ferskner @TheAromaofBooks @batsy @Librarybelle I think that since perfect! I'll post something later tonight. 2mo

I love me some angsty realistic YA. This reminded me of everything I love about the genre, with some developments I didn't see coming and plenty of romance.

I..... don't get what the fuss is over this novel. Sure, the descriptions of the natural world are gorgeous, but the characters are all stereotypes and the dialog is awful and this story has been told before. I rarely felt any emotional resonance. But I'm also not drawn to this kind of story, so it probably wasn't meant for me anyway.

This was my first Nick Hornby novel and I was surprised how much I liked it. I imagined something indulgently in favor of man-children, and while it's definitely about a man-child, it is about growth and maturity and allowing other people to make you a better person. #litsyatoz @BookishMarginalia

I'm #audiobaking with my favorite chocolate chip recipe and a book about the suffrage movement in Tennessee. I also remembered that I completely forgot to post a #bfcr3 update last week. 🤦 Truth be told, I've had a bunch of small health issues that have kept me from exercising much, but I think it's important to pay attention to my body's messages. Sleep is going decently well, though! 4/12 books read. #bookfitnesschallenge @wanderinglynn

I can't even express how excited I am about this swap.

1. Both! I'm a huge fan of the Golden Age but have a massive soft spot for modern cozies, although I'd probably rather own modern cozies since I usually listen to Agatha on audio.
2. Both! (I'm easy)
3. I love Dorothy L. Sayers and Ngaio Marsh.
4. Yes, but I'm pretty picky about it.
5. Deep red, but I like all jewel tones.

I got dressed to go on a long afternoon walk so I could start #bfcr3 strong, and then it started to rain. Hours of rain. But sitting on my balcony with a good book and my plants isn't such a bad alternative.

My goals: 7+ hours of sleep a night, 30+ minutes of movement a day, 12 books read. #bookfitnesschallenge @wanderinglynn

I wasn't expecting the level of commitment and quality that went into everything. Most people were dressed up impeccably, with high quality costumes and incredible details.
