This book disappointed me. I was underwhelmed by the storyline and found the writing to be rather coarse. The main characters weren‘t at all endearing, which I guess was the point, but I would‘ve liked a nicer personality to have been included. This book wasn‘t a total pan, but my expectations were higher. ⭐️⭐️

A really good, twisted thriller that intrigues and astonishes the reader. Short, choppy chapters of alternating narrators whose storytelling gradually reveal the plot. Creepy in parts and distressing in others but ultimately a captivating book. I listened to this on audio and the multiple narrators did an excellent job ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This was good! Following a night out, Joanna Oliva believes she is being stalked by a man who hassled her in a bar. One push later and the man lies motionless at the bottom of some stairs. Should Jo help him or should she leave? The sliding doors theme of this story was really clever with two alternative scenarios playing out at the same time. Intriguing and gripping, I devoured this audiobook! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

(Comment about audio quality below.)

Ms_T The sound quality of this audiobook is below what I expect from Audible. There are obvious patches in the recording where the narrator has re-recorded parts and they had been added in. They sounded completely different from the original recording in tone and volume. A shame because the book itself is so good. 2w

Not what I expected from Alice Hoffman and not an enjoyable read due to the subject matter. In this story the central character becomes embroiled in a world of gang warfare, drugs, prostitution, rape and murder, necessary as she falls for the leader of New York gang, The Orphans. Once I finished the book I was left feeling flat, sad and wondering if that world and that type of lifestyle is worth it. ⭐️⭐️

What a great story! This book sprawls a timespan of 40 or so years as the main character, Samuel Andresen-Anderson goes on a voyage of discovery about his mother, grandfather and himself. This book is packed full of interesting and amusing characters, and the writing is wordy but enchanting. i listened to the audio version of this book narrated by awarding-winning narrator Ari Fliakos who did a stunning job of bringing the characters to life.

The third in Durrell‘s Corfu Trilogy and another winner of a book. Durrell‘s memoirs are told in his usual loose, witty and self-depreciating style that‘s fun yet innocent. The characters who appear in this book are all unique and a bit wacky, making the chapters interesting and easy to read. Really enjoyable and heart-warming ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This book really surprised me - I was expecting to dislike it but the story swept me away with its three parallel storylines which take place in the present day, Elizabethan London and mythological Greece. The first chapter was incredibly powerful and the story developed into a tale large and sweeping. This book is very different to anything I‘ve read before, it seems almost experimental, yet for me it works very well ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #NetGalley #ARC

An understated but lovely story that reminded me a lot of The Storied Life of A J Fikry. The main character in this book, Loveday, has a past she guards fiercely. A rather closed character, it gradually becomes clear over the course of the book the troubles Loveday has faced and the reason for her aloofness. An easy to read book that tugs at your emotions. There are some nice book references too. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Such a powerful and thought-provoking read. I listened to this on audio with narration by the writer, Alice Walker, who was exceptional. The second book in Durrell‘s Corfu Trilogy and another wonderful anecdotal read of his and his family‘s life on the Greek island. Durrell‘s style is very loose and gentle with lots of harmless humour at the expense of himself, his mother, siblings and the array of eccentric characters who cross his path. A really amusing and interesting read ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Well, that was a pleasant surprise. I was expecting a cheesy, corny retelling and actually experienced Christian‘s inner turmoil, regret and passion. What a charming book! This retelling of Gerald Durrell‘s childhood growing up on the Greek island of Corfu is tender yet humorous, chronicling his adventures with his somewhat odd family along with his obsession with the Corfu wildlife. A classic for a reason, I‘m so glad I finally read this superb telling of 19th century life. As with many of the books written in this era, P&P tells of the pressures of young women to marry, and to do so with financial security. The characters are varied, from the slightly downtrodden Mrs Bennet to the acidic Lady Catherine de Bourgh. A great insight into regency life and a simply wonderful love story. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A good, suspenseful crime thriller with enough twists, turns and red herrings to keep the reader intrigued. This book has a nice balance of work and home life which gives the main characters good dimension. This is the fourth book of five (book six is due out soon) and wouldn‘t work as a standalone. Money, money, money and even more money. This story, centred around three obscenely rich Singaporean families, is decadent, outrageous, indulgent and in places cringe-worthy. A good, solid, twenty-first century thriller with lots of tension. The characters are likeable for the most part (although I wanted to shake Zoe more than a few times) and the setting - the London Underground - is perfect for this creepy tale. The USP of this book is its reverse-chronological timeline. Unfortunately that didn‘t work for me. I was constantly reading parts and wondering if I‘d missed something in the chapter, only to realise the details of that particular thread wouldn‘t be revealed until the next chapter. Confused? So was I. The story itself was rather mediocre but on a positive note, the cover is lovely.

KristenDuck Yup agreed. I actually appreciated her writing but was not a fan of the reverse chronology. 2mo
TiredLibrarian Agree; the reverse chronology seemed gimmicky and didn't work for me.

Since discovering Audible, housework has become so much more tolerable #AudioCleaning

Cathythoughts I completely agree... I also now have a little Bluetooth speaker ( only the size of a coffee cup ) I love it 🥰 2mo
Ms_T @Cathythoughts That‘s something I should definitely put on my shopping list. 2mo
Peterfox123 I got some fairly cheap Bluetooth earbuds. No wires at all. Never do any "work" without an audiobook on the go. 2mo
Peterfox123 I honestly can‘t remember if I‘ve read this book! 🤪🤪🤪🤪 Old age I suppose. 2mo
Ms_T @Peterfox123 It‘s really good! A tension-filled thriller 👍🏻 2mo

Readergrrl I‘d like to read that. Jane Eyre is one of my favorites. I read The Wide Sargasso Sea and loved that too, but I‘ve never quite felt the same about Rochester. Maybe this novel will help to balance it out... Adding it to my TBR! 💛 2mo
batsy This sounds intriguing! 2mo

Ms_T @batsy @Tanisha_A I thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish! 2mo
Ms_T @Cathythoughts It was so good 😊 2mo
JillR Based on that review I‘m stacking it! 😊 2mo
Deangirl I have this on my Kindle but haven‘t dared read it as I read Wide Sargasso Sea and hated the hatchet job it did on Rochester. I may give this one a read in the near future. 2mo
Ms_T @JillR Yay! 2mo
Ms_T @Deangirl I hope you like this one as much as I did. 2mo

In an era where everything is instant, available all the time and ready next day, it‘s so frustrating to me that I can‘t get the hardback books I‘ve been craving for the last month 😤

The Romanovs: 1613-1918 | Simon Sebag Montefiore

Pickpick

When I started this book I hoped I‘d enjoy it as much as the reviews indicated. It‘s a dense read, heavy on detail and brimming with details of war, power struggles, adultery, torture and the accumulation of territory. This book is an epic, a seriously good read and a compelling tale of Russian politics. An enthralling book. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Birdsong28 Glad you enjoyed it 😘📚📖 2mo
Ms_T @Birdsong28 I really did! Thank you for another excellent recommendation 😘 2mo

Back to work today after a week‘s annual leave. Fortunately I have these two beauties with me - Mr Rochester for my journey to and from work, and The Romanovs for the eight hours that I‘m there 😂

Tanisha_A Perfect! 2mo
Caroline2 Oh I‘ve had The Romanovs on my tbr shelf for ages now, be interesting to see what you think of it. 👍🏻 2mo
