Well, where do I start? My expectation: a factual book about the Twilight author & her stories, with behind-the-scenes glimpses of how the books came to be; an insight into the making of the films & extra snippets of information about the cast. Reality: an immature, essay-type piece with childish quizzes & nonsensical ramblings - the author seems to believe vampires actually exist. I was gobsmacked at what Gresh was writing and I‘m still stunned.

CogsOfEncouragement I had not heard of this book. I do have The Twilight Saga: The Official Illustrated Guide and it is a ton of fun with the backstories Meyer wrote for all her characters. 3w
Ms_T @CogsOfEncouragement That looks much more like my kind of thing. I‘ll definitely check it out 👍🏻 3w

It‘s sad to think there will be no more books in this series - I‘ve enjoyed following the lives and adventures of Gwen, Sam, Lanny and Connor throughout the five-book run. But I‘m glad that this final part lived up to my expectations - it was gritty, gripping and gruesome: the perfect action thriller ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A huge pick for this action-packed, edge-of-your-seat thriller. This is the fourth book in the Stillhouse Lake series and after a rather underwhelming book 3, this one gets right back on track with badass leading character, Gwen Proctor uncovering a cult and getting into all kinds of trouble along the way. Book 5 is lined up and ready, and I‘ll savour it, as the author sadly passed away shortly after writing it ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This epic has been on my must read list for years, but I‘ve never been ready to dedicate the amount of time needed to digest it. Along comes Audible with a free to members, (yes, free!) unabridged version, narrated by the fabulous Thandiwe Newton. So I‘ve downloaded it and I‘m starting it now!

The follow up to The Island (which I loved), this book was short and quick to read but a little disappointing. Although the story is charming, it didn‘t really go anywhere and left me feeling rather flat. The writing is lovely and this made the book a perfectly readable one – I just would have liked a bit more action ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Peterfox123 Hmmm, very interested but it‘s a tough call to craft a sequel with as compelling a narrative as drove the first novel. Maybe I need to wait till I get back to Crete. 2mo

A charming story set during WWII and the present day. Everyone thinks Will is developing dementia as he continually insists his wife is missing – no one has ever seen his wife or believes he is even married. Along comes social worker Laura, who befriends Will and sets about solving the mystery. This is primarily a love story but with a large pinch of the supernatural and is easy to read with a feelgood factor ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

As expected, this book is a harrowing narrative account of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The book follows survivors, victims, victims‘ family members and rescue workers whilst portraying in detail the events of the day. There were many moments when I had to pause and gather myself, the writing is compassionate and very personal. Brilliant and heart-breaking in equal measure ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Having never read this book or seen the film, I was excited to experience this mafia-based crime novel, and my expectation was met. The characters have great back stories which are intricately described, the Corleone brothers are a force to be reckoned with, and the head of the family – Vito (Don) Corleone – is a formidable character. The book has stood the test of time very well and I‘ll definitely be reading the follow-up ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Dfferent to previous Boyne books, this story offers sarcasm & satire along with a cast of unlikeable characters. Social media & its dark side also plays a major part in the book & gives fair warning of the downfalls associated with platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram & Tik Tok. A passing reference to Maude Avery made me smile – I‘m really beginning to think she actually exists! Boyne‘s trademark dry humour carries this story well 4⭐️

I have watched many documentaries about the 9/11 terrorist attacks & felt compelled to purchase this audiobook, which is a minute-by-minute account of the day (& preceding weeks, months, & years) told by multiple narrators. The horror of the events is tangible whilst the heroism of the emergency services, employees & passers-by is astonishing. I had to pause this audiobook several times in order to compose myself.A well-researched, sombre book.5⭐️

A heartbreaking read, not only because of the situation Shuggie grows up in, but his innocence makes it completely normal. Shuggie‘s mum is an alcoholic and his father is absent for the most part. Although Shuggie‘s mum loves him, the care she offers him and his siblings is not up to par and Shuggie becomes her crutch while struggling with his own identity. The ick factor here is real, but if you can get past it, this dystopian story is v. good: when animals become infected with a virus deadly to humans, cannibalism is legalised, & humans are farmed for consumption - an unthinkable idea & completely taboo, but the skilful writing makes it almost believable. Some characters have a conscience, some are apathetic, & others are despicable, making this story an emotional workout. 5⭐️ (TW: animal cruelty)

I really wanted to love this historical fiction book, which is set in the 1620s, but for me it fell short of the mark. I found the story to be very slow and I struggled to become engaged with any of the characters. I also doubted the authenticity of the setting, along with the language and actions used. It just came across a bit 20th century. Not for me, I‘m afraid.

Another solid novel by Boyne and although it won‘t go down as my favourite, it‘s still a jolly good read. Aristocracy meets criminality in very British society of the 1930s, with big characters, big ideas and big debt. We even get to meet Edward and Mrs Simpson. This book contains Boyne‘s usual sharp wit and cynicism and works very well as an audiobook ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This book starts at the end of the main character‘s story – her death. Sounds morbid, but it‘s actually a cleverly written look at Leila‘s life in the final 10 or so minutes before her subconscious ceases. As Leila revisits times with her friends, family and travels she tells a tale rich in imagery, with huge highs and plummeting lows. The back stories are interesting, and I thought the writing was really well done ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

John Boyne is fast becoming one of my favourite authors. The sorcery he uses in his writing, getting right to the guts of sensitive issues then slamming you right in your heart, is nothing less than magical. There are two storylines running throughout this book and the assumption is they will gel at the end and all will become clear. They don‘t and it doesn‘t. I thought this would be a gritty thriller, but I was left feeling somewhat disappointed. There was colloquial language which I stumbled over and the two stories seemed to me to oppose, rather than complement, one another. A head-scratcher that was a bit too weird for me.
