The last 2 days were parent-teacher conferences (and thus half-days, much to their delight). But perhaps even more excitingly, it was book fair week! They both had a blast picking out books (they‘ve been doing extra chores the last couple weeks to earn more money).

Naturally, JUST NARWHAL, a very cute book with flippy sequins on the cover HAD to come home with us! 🙂 #raisingreaders #scholasticbookfair

Saturday I took my big kid to Subway (her favorite) for lunch. As we were heading out the door she asked, “Can we each bring a book and have a reading date while we eat?” 😍😍

I read BE THE GIRL by K.A. Tucker, which is a thoughtful YA novel with themes of bullying, autism, and belonging. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ She read TALES FROM THE HOOD, the sixth entry in the Sisters Grimm series by Michael Buckley.

Melinda Gates does an excellent job sharing things I‘ve heard before about how important empowering women is; but she illustrates her points with specific examples from Malawi, Niger, India, & the US, sharing stories she‘s learned through her work with the Gates foundation. As a devoutly Catholic, incredibly intelligent programmer, she has a fascinating take on the issues facing women in today‘s world! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #howjessreadsin2019

I‘m calling it at 26 titles for August!

The 6️⃣ in the top row were my favorites. The best of the month is tagged.

Only 5️⃣ were nonfiction, because I went on a pretty heavy romance binge in the middle of the month. My favorite romances were WAIT FOR IT and KULTI, both by Mariana Zapata.

9️⃣ were by authors of color. So I‘m doing pretty well on that goal this month!

How about you? How was your August? #howjessreadsin2019

emmaturi I read 14 books, probadly the most I have read in a month. My favorite was Evelyn Hugo 2w

This is probably a 3.5 star for me. I loved the way Ivan and Jasmine were unafraid to give each other crap. I didn‘t like how Jasmine hid a situation that was actually a big deal, and then totally freaked out about something that shouldn‘t have been a big deal. It was annoying. But their developing friendship/romance was super sweet.

(Also this is the 5th Mariana Zapata book I‘ve read in 6 days. Who even am I???) 😂🤷🏼‍♀️ #howjessreadsin2019

I thought it was appropriate to have a slightly grubby child be the model for THE OVERDUE LIFE OF AMY BYLER.

I really enjoyed this book about a single mom having a “momspringa” (like an Amish rumspringa).

I have been in a very romantic mood this month (maybe because tmrw is my 13th anniversary?). I‘ve found a couple new authors that I‘ve enjoyed — Susannah Nix, Alexa Martin, and Helena Hunting. I‘d say Susannah Nix‘s are my favorite style — funny, smart, and not too earnest. I really can‘t handle earnest romances. 😂 Her books are also the most “closed-door” (aka less steamy), which I prefer. 🙂 #romantsy

This book is crazy. I didn‘t realize that Jones was instrumental in integrating Indianapolis, partly as a result of the death of his daughter. The Joneses had adopted some Korean kids, and some African American ones. One Korean daughter died in a car accident, and she wasn‘t allowed to be buried in a regular cemetery bc of her race — it was against Indiana law. She had to be buried in a “Negro cemetery”. This was in the late 1950s. 😱😑

To clarify for all the questions on my post from yesterday. 😂

Yes, July 15th is early for the first day, but they get 3 weeks fall break, 3 days at Thanksgiving, 2 weeks Christmas break, 2 days Rodeo break, 2 weeks spring break, and a long weekend for Easter. I much prefer a shorter summer and more time off throughout the year — especially since it‘s too hot to play outside right now anyway. #tucson

justanothermusing they are so cute 2mo
CarolynM This is pretty much how the school year runs in Australia. About 6-7 weeks off in summer (week or so before Christmas to end of January) then 2 weeks off for the other 3 term breaks. 2mo
Purrfectpages Ooh what‘s a Rodeo break? 2mo
howjessreads @Purrfectpages It‘s a Tucson tradition! They get a Thurs & Fri off school in Feb, in honor of the Rodeo. (Although everyone I know drives to Disneyland instead of attending the rodeo.) 😂😂 2mo
CouronneDhiver 👏🏽👏🏽 2mo
Lady_Tigana_20 I wish we had this. We go back August. Go 3 months till Thanksgiving. After Christmas break, it‘s usually 3.5 months till spring break. Then kids have couple weeks of review, and May is state assessment time. We‘re usually out by Memorial Day. Some Junes are nice, but some are hot. Too hot in July to go anywhere. Who wants to go to WDW in summer!?! It feels like you‘re standing on the sun. 😞 2mo

BooknerdsLife In Australia we only get roughly 4-5 weeks off during summer (which is late Dec to early Feb) but kids get 2weeks off for every 10weeks of school each term & there are 4 terms a year. 🤗 Great for kids...not so great for parents 😅 2mo
kezzlou85 In the UK the kids haven't even started their summer break yet. ❤ 2mo
julesG My kids are starting their 6 weeks of summer holidays today (it's the 15th already, in Germany). In some parts of Germany kids already had 3 weeks of holiday, in other parts they won't go on holiday for another couple of weeks. Strange system for such a comparably small country. 2mo

JanuarieTimewalker13 Every time I see the word Tucson, I laugh bc my godson said he wanted to move to “Tuckson” and I was like, “huh?”. Then I died laughing-He was clueless, and he was in his 20s at the time. Lol (edited) 2mo

It‘s the FINAL DAY of #30junebooks! I can‘t believe it! Today‘s prompt is E - and I went with all the books I have that start with E. There are some winners in this stack for sure!

Thanks so much to everyone who participated this month! I‘ll have to add up the participants here and on IG, and then I‘ll choose a giveaway winner - probably tomorrow.

TheAromaofBooks I love those editions of the Shannon Hale books!! 3mo
nerdcornerbooks You've got some good ones in there! I've only read a handful of Georgette Heyer, what did you think of Envious Casca? 3mo

Day 29 of #30junebooks - book and lunch! I‘ve never done a sit down restaurant in an airport before, but when you have a 3.5 hour layover and you‘re traveling alone... might as well!

CoverToCoverGirl Good book + good food = happiness! 3mo
Zelma It‘s a relaxing way to spend time at an airport, when you have a long layover. I hate grabbing food and eating in the waiting area by the gate. 3mo
BooknerdsLife Hope you‘ve had a good flight 💖 3mo

1. Oh so many. Anne of Green Gables, Harry Potter, Sebastian St. Cyr, and Rivers of London are the first four that come to mind.
2. MAYONNAISE. It ruins so many perfectly good foods.
3. Heights. 😱
4. Two little brothers and two little sisters.
5. Heyyyyy! It‘s still Friday for 90 more minutes here. 🙂

Pickpick

Day 28 of #30junebooks - favorite. I always used to say I didn‘t have a favorite book. But I‘ve read Fangirl 5x in the last 4 years (the audio is especially delightful!) and I think that means it‘s my favorite book. 📚🎉

How about you? Are you a FANGIRL #fangirl? 😉

CarolynM I've wondered about it but not tried it. I think I should. Stacked.🙂 3mo
