I sometimes wonder what the epistolary novel of the 2030s onwards will be like. Just a smattering of cobbled together conversation snippets, written in text shorthand and punctuated by emojis? 🤔

#readermusings

IuliaC A very relevant point! 😃 5d
ravenlee I saw someone once comparing emojis to hieroglyphics and sometimes wonder if future generations will have the same trouble deciphering them. 5d

Today is a day to celebrate mothers, but I'd like to also acknowledge those like me who have lost pregnancies, babies, children. Those who've been pregnant but don't get the coveted title of Mother. Those who are grieving for what could have been. Those of us who are invisible with every baby shower invite, every casual 'when are you gonna have kids?' quip, and every Mother's Day. Well, I see you. Be kind to yourself today. Helpful book list 👇🏽

There was a lot going on in this one, but it somehow managed to be very cohesive... and very creepy. I appreciated how realistic the portrayal of anxiety was (TWs for bed bug PTSD, drug abuse, and systemic racism), and would highly recommend it to fans of Home Before Dark and When No One is Watching.

Has anyone else had the experience of posting about a book with "controversial" themes, then suddenly losing a handful of followers? ??‍♀️

Amiable I honestly don‘t keep tabs on how many followers I ever have so I wouldn‘t even notice if I did lose any. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2mo
ShyBookOwl @Amiable Fair. I'm not upset about it, and I realize it could be a coincidence, but it struck me as odd and kind of funny 2mo
AmyG Ha, like @Amiable I wouldn‘t even notice. And if someone unfollowed me because of what I read....good. I don‘t want them to follow me anyway. 🤣 And I keep thinking....what did you read that was so offensive? (edited) 2mo
See All 19 Comments
Amiable @AmyG I had the same thought —I want to read whatever @ShyBookOwl just read! 😀 2mo
ShyBookOwl @AmyG @Amiable Haha I'm with you on not wanting those followers anyways! Whether it was a coincidence or not, I'd been posting a lot about Cemetery Boys (a YA about a gay trans Latinx brujo) 2mo
AmyG @ShyBookOwl Ahhh. Then you don‘t want those followers. I guess it‘s good they just unfollowed you as opposed to voicing their prejudice. 2mo
ShyBookOwl @AmyG good point! 2mo
swynn I assume so, but I don't really pay attention because it's not a contest? Disclosure: I've sometimes unfollowed other Littens because... it became clear that our vibrations were disharmonious, let's say. And I assumed it was all cool, that they wouldn't miss me either and neither of us would worry much about it. 2mo
ShyBookOwl @swynn You're right, it's definitely not a contest. I just happened to notice it and became curious how common it is. I don't miss them and I'm sure they don't miss me. I'm just on here to gush about books with whoever wants to gush with me 😆 2mo
swynn @ShyBookOwl Me too! 👍 2mo
marleed My gay activist brother died of AIDS. As adults we lived in cities far away and only met up when we‘d both travel to our family in my hometown which was far away for both of us. I understood and supported him, but all the books with LGBTQ characters I‘ve read since his death years ago have been wonderful to read. So, I for one would double follow if I could :) 2mo
Amiable @ShyBookOwl I posted one time about my volunteer work as a clinic escort at Planned Parenthood and a few people unfollowed me —one of them after berating me for it. Trust me, I‘m not losing any sleep over it. Adios! 👋🏼 2mo
Hooked_on_books Probably, but I haven‘t paid too much attention when it happens. I‘ve unfollowed people when I haven‘t loved their content, but did so quietly (one was when someone praised Don Jr‘s book and I just couldn‘t). I feel like in our current moment it‘s harder than ever to change minds, sadly. 2mo
Hooked_on_books And by the way, I thought The Cemetery Boys was SO good! 2mo
ShyBookOwl @marleed I'm so sorry your brother is no longer here. As an activist, I bet he'd be thrilled to see how much better books are doing with LGBTQ+ rep these days. These books are just so important. I certainly won't be posting about them any less, no matter how many ppl unfollow me 😏 2mo
ShyBookOwl @Amiable Wow!! That's horrible. I know Litsy tends to be a very nice and welcoming space, but I guess ppl like that exist everywhere 😒 2mo
ShyBookOwl @Hooked_on_books Agreed. And I would have unfollowed that person too! 2mo
ShyBookOwl @Hooked_on_books It was!! I really enjoyed it. 2mo
Outlier Honestly, if you really disapprove of what I'm reading... that truly sounds like a YOU problem... byeeee, not my loss.... ahh people lol. 2mo

This satirical retelling of Jane Eyre (+ghosts) was a really fun read. I loved the way the authors broke the 4th wall to comment on differences in today's society and Bronte's time, and I laughed out loud often. But the last quarter felt pretty convoluted and my mind kept drifting away, feeling as though I'd lost my anchor to the story. That aside, I enjoyed the overall experience.

Omg. Yes. It's witty, fun, and bursting at the seams with nostalgia, while also doing a great job at being it's own thing. I ❤ what they did with Spike, and I ❤❤ that the new slayer is Willow's daughter. Could it have been more diverse? Definitely! Will ppl be divided on the Willow/Oz storyline? Probably. Did I miss Buffy? Not really. It's a new Scooby gang, all connected to the OG show, and I think it works really well. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

I really enjoyed that this was a whodunit style thriller set against the back drop of start up culture. I spent 4 years at a tech company and recently had my heart broken when they sold to a big corporation, so it hit close to home. That aside, this turned out to be a more complex and layered mystery than I was expecting, and it kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time (even once I guessed the killer). Great pace! ⭐⭐⭐⭐
