Pickpick

In the years following the massacre at Pine Cottage, sole survivor, Quincy, has fallen in love and started a successful baking blog. She's moved on. Only she hasn't. Being a Final Girl never goes away...

I enjoyed this read. Hyperbolic, but in a good way, reminiscent of the whodunnit slashers of the 90s & early 2000s. Tropey but not without twists. The middle was a little meh, but by the 75% mark, I couldn't put it down.

Hammock reading 😌

Reading this one with my husband, and trying not to get ahead of him, so it's taking a while to get through. Doing about a chapter or two a week. It's a re-read for me, but I had forgotten how violent Winston's fantasies are!

We, as a society, have to get a lot better at not demonizing and looking down on people who struggle with suicidal thoughts and feelings. The huge umbrella that encompasses mental health issues should never be scoffed at. Eyes should never be rolled. Someone who doesn't struggle with thoughts of suicide is not inherently better than someone who does.

Just saying.

Chrissyreadit I think we need to get better at understanding many underlying issues as well. I work with people in recovery and the concept of second chances, serving time and redemption are a joke. I am on the line to show hope and grounding when punishment is all that is offered by our systems and culture. 1w

scowler1 Waltzing through life with no empathy, love or concern for anyone but yourself is also a serious mental health issue. Many of our elected officials suffer terribly with this condition which usually affects those with below average intelligence. Smart, compassionate people often struggle with living among them. 1w

Another fun cozy paranormal mystery. I predicted the killer pretty early on and ran into that problem where the characters look really silly for missing the obvious for so long. Palimpsest I haven‘t read the book, but I‘ve seen both movies. I like the Swedish one better. So good! I really should read this, but I have so many books on my to read list and I often struggle with reading a book I‘ve seen the movie version of, even if it has other inclusions. That‘s why I prefer reading the book first. Oh well. 3w
ShyBookOwl @Palimpsest I'm the same. Once I see the movie I don't usually go back. In this case, I saw Let Me In and then read the book. The book is WAY darker. Then I saw the Swedish movie. It's closer to the book but still significantly tamed down. I think both movies brought different parts of the book to the forefront and I really appreciate that. 3w

Mehso-so

This one was fun, but it probably won't stick with me. I really enjoyed the Scottish setting from an outsider perspective. I visited once 3 years ago, so it was kind of nostalgic. I also really liked that the story was about friendship, rather than romance, especially in a YA novel. Nothing about it really struck me as unique or thought-provoking, but it passed the time nicely while I worked. I liked it, but I didnt fall in 📚❤.

I loved this book. Lyrical writing, beautifully haunting imagery, STRONG female characters and packed with action. At times, it could be a little confusing to follow. Some characters had multiple names and some of the stuff about the wars and the Wood could have been laid out better. That said, once I understood the Wood's origin tale, I was moved. Bonus, I loved the ending. It felt just right for a standalone novel.

Nute Nice review! 4w
ShyBookOwl @Nute Thank you! Have you read it? 4w
Nute No, I haven‘t read it. I thought that it was the first book of a trilogy so I was waiting to collect the two remaining books. I actually purchased her second novel, Spinning Silver, thinking hat I was building the set. I posted a blurb here on Litsy about the second book of the trilogy & a fellow Litten quickly enlightened me that these are standalone novels. No need to collect before reading as they are not related. I haven‘t acted upon that yet. 4w

ShyBookOwl @Nute I can see why you'd think they were related. They have similar themes and covers! I did like Spinning Silver more (I'm a sucker for how she wove in so many retellings), but Uprooted was great too. I think these are her only 2 standalones. 4w

Listening to this on Spotify. It's fun so far! I love the Scottish setting. Edinburgh is a great place to set a ghost story.
Also, So impressed with Spotify's growing library of audiobooks 🎧📚❤

GondorGirl I really loved this book. I'm excited for the sequel! 1mo

CatAndKindle I didn‘t know they did ‘em either 1mo
ShyBookOwl @DannyHattan they are kind of hard to find. The best way to find them is to search "unabridged" and then click See All Albums. I hope they make a section for them soon! 1mo
ShyBookOwl @CatAndKindle try searching Unabridged 👍🏼 1mo
ShyBookOwl @Addison_Reads no way?! 🤗 1mo
