I have finished the third quarter of #Booked2019. Just in time. These were my six books. Now I‘m starting planning for the last quarter. Are you already thinking about #Booked2020, @4thhouseontheleft @BarbaraTheBibliophage @Cinfhen ?! 😘

Ruthiella Well done! 4h
BarbaraTheBibliophage Great job! And yes, we already have prompt ideas for #booked2020! 3h

I read this #GraphicNovel for #Booked2019 and because it‘s on the list of #1001books but I didn‘t fell for the genre. For me, looking at pictures is way more difficult than to just read, all those images soon dazzle me. And then it is about superheroes... in which I‘m not interested at all. However, I was intrigued and it kept me reading on. Never again though 🤪

ValerieAndBooks I actually got this recently only because it‘s #1001Books. I‘ll probably start it sooner rather than later because it should be a faster read than the many books with 500+ pages on the list 🤪 7h
BarbaraBB @ValerieAndBooks Well, it actually took me surprisingly long 😬😀 7h
Amiable I‘m right there with you. I read it for a reading Bingo challenge (“read a graphic novel”) and my husband and son love it. I was totally “meh” about it. 7h
BarbaraTheBibliophage Congrats on surviving! ♥️📚👊🏻🤪 3h

When her girlfriend discovers Alice isn‘t dead (because she sees her on the news), Keisha starts looking for her, by driving through the US as a truck driver. So far so good. But then things start getting supernatural (first a bit but then a lot) and I lost interest. #podcast

pigeonsandcrows Is the book basically a rehashing of the same content as the podcast? 2d

I just now discovered this #podcast but I could not concentrate on what was happening. Too weird for me, I admit it. Unfortunately because I liked the premise so much!

This book is so not my usual stuff, but okay, I‘ll give it a try. It works for #1001books, #Booked2019 and #ATY19.

arlenefinnigan Good choice! 4d
Cinfhen Yeah, It‘s NOT for me, either 😬 4d
Reagan-reads Oh I love it, and it was way out of my usual comfort zone. I dug the movie too. 4d

batsy I wasn't into graphic novels when I first read this (or rather I hadn't read much comics up to that point) but I was really blown away by this! 4d
BarbaraBB @Reagan-reads @batsy That is hopeful, thanks for the thumbs-up 💕 3d
AudreyMorris This book put me into a 6-week reading slump. I forced myself to finish. It was a mistake! My high schooler has loved it for years, it was all his idea... 1d
BarbaraBB @AudreyMorris I can relate to that, it is so not for me. I have a hard time focusing on what‘s happening in all those graphics and who is talking etc. But I have to admit I do like it better than expected. 22h

I enjoyed Ling Ma‘s writing, her New York, her main character Candace. Shen Fever is spreading fast, everybody leaves the city or dies, but Candace stays as long as she can, because she lacks other options. When she finally leaves, there is that other storyline, which I thought was less good. It reminded me of many other dystopian novels. However, I am interested in what Ling Ma will write next.

Reviewsbylola I really enjoyed this one! 5d
Megabooks I‘ve taken this on and off my TBR so many times. I really should just read it! Great review!!! 5d
Ruthiella I liked her take on “zombies” ( sorta right?) in this book. Less terrifying and more just pitiable. 4d

Cinfhen I‘ve been eyeing this book for awhile too @Megabooks but I just promised my hubby NO new book purchases from now until December 1 🙄😩of course #BOTM & #DailyDeals don‘t count 😜 (edited) 4d
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen really? Until December? That is so far away! 4d

readordierachel Great review! I loved this one, though I agree that some elements were stronger than others. And like @Ruthiella I really liked her take on zombies. 4d
BarbaraBB @readordierachel @Ruthiella The take on zombies was really plausible indeed. 4d
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen I think it may be a good thing to see your tbr actually decline 😀💕 4d

The Rotters' Club | Jonathan Coe
post image

Such a sparkling novel about a group of friends at a renowned school in Birmingham, England. They are the editors of the school newspaper in the turbulent seventies. Strikes and politics paralyze the country (not unlike today‘s England…), the IRA is terrorizing the city, and the boys discover pop music and love. Coe as always writes funny with a serious undertone.

batsy I might have said this multiple times before, but I really enjoyed this book! 😆 1w

Sleepless Nights | Elizabeth Hardwick
post image

It was not easy to keep focussing on the beautiful sentences among the stream of conscience memoirs of Elizabeth Hardwick. I was not really in the mood for such a read unfortunately. #NYRBBookClub

The memories of her youth took place in #Kentucky so I can use the book for #ReadingUSA2019.

(Pic: This summer I stayed in a hotel in Brooklyn with the best pillows ever. I have searched everywhere and was able to buy them online!)

Librarybelle The pillows do look very comfortable! 2w
Liz_M Now you have me curious about both the pillows and the hotel! 😉 2w
BarbaraBB @Liz_M Lol it was the Indigo in Williamsburg, it opened the night we were there. First guests ever! And it was cheap! I just checked and I couldn‘t afford to go there again now! The pillows felt like clouds 😉, I never slept so good. In case you‘re interested, the brand is IHG (international hotel group) 😘 2w

LeahBergen Oh oh! I hope I like it better. And I need new pillows, too. 😆 2w
BarbaraBB @LeahBergen You probably will. For me it was just the wrong book at the wrong time. I was too impatient! 2w
emilyhaldi I'm in the market for some new pillows, so thank you for that!! 😆👌🏻 I'm starting this book today... 🤞🏻 2w
BarbaraBB @emilyhaldi I hope you‘ll like it! And I feel like a sales person for the pillows 😂😴🛏 2w

BarbaraBB @youneverarrived The writing is gorgeous and poignant, I think many of us will love it! 🤞😘 2w

Man it was hard not to throw this book in a corner. I kept wondering what was the point. People in a room, killing eachother, lots of gory details and unfinished sentences. The chapters kept repeating themselves, so did the conversations. I ended up bored and frustrated. It‘s probably me but what a waste of time. (Sorry @rajithr and @vivastory ...)

vivastory It's too bad you didn't like it. I thought you might since he seems to have some things in common with Iain Reid. 2w
BarbaraBB @vivastory I love Reid, you‘re right. And I do see the comparison. I think it was their being in that same room together all the time, it felt like a scene repeating itself continuously. While Reid‘s plots are more developing if I make myself clear? 2w

A Light in Dark Places | Jennifer Graves, Emily Clawson

This book is written by the estranged sister of Josh Powell, one of the main characters in the #podcast Cold, a chilling podcast about a case gone cold. Josh‘s wife Susan disappeared one day and although everyone was sure he murdered her, he fooled the police and was never arrested. A few years later Josh killed their kids and himself. Will ever be known what happened to Susan? #PoorMisguidedFool #RedRoseSeptember

Cinfhen This sounds like something @Reviewsbylola would be interested in ...so sad 😔 2w
arlenefinnigan Sounds like a very tough read 2w
Reviewsbylola I‘ve read a book about this case but I don‘t think it was this one! @Cinfhen 2w
See All 23 Comments
BarbaraBB @Reviewsbylola It‘s such a sad story! Do you remember what book you read about Susan Powell? 2w
Lcsmcat I was living in Utah when this happened. He was slick, but even when he was on TV begging for the return of his wife something didn‘t add up. And the way he killed those poor boys! 2w
BarbaraBB @Lcsmcat It must have been all over the media in Utah at the time. Such a strange case with her suddenly missing And of course that ending. And oh, do you remember his father? What a family... 2w
BarbaraBB @Reviewsbylola Thanks Stephanie! I‘m a bit obsessed by the case at the moment 🙈 2w
Lcsmcat @BarbaraBB Oh yes! It was all over the media. 2w
JaclynW Yes, this was a disturbing case. It was all over the local news. It seemed obvious from the beginning that Josh was guilty. I listened to the podcast too. Bone chilling. That family!! Steven Powell was looney! It was all such a sad situation. I actually had my teenage daughter listen to the podcast. I think it's important to talk about abusive relationships and what red flags are. 2w
BarbaraBB @JaclynW I had to think of you when I listened to this podcast. I thought you would know about it since you live in Utah. What a family indeed. Josh was scary. That Steve too - his diaries 😱. And Michael of course. I do hope the case will come to a close one day. It‘s a sad thought chances are high Susan will never be found. 2w
BarbaraBB @JaclynW Also - thanks for following my thread today! 2w
JaclynW @BarbaraBB You're welcome! I enjoy your posts! I've been missing lately due to school starting for my kids and all the busy that brings. Plus my 8 year old daughter had a friend/classmate die (hit by a car). Super sad situation that made it hard to focus/my focus became other things. 2w
JaclynW @BarbaraBB I'm holding out hope too that one day her body will be found. Bodies often turn up in the dessert or mountains. Everytime they find one, my first thought is Susan Powell. I kind of think Josh burned her body so that there would be no evidence. The entire time while listening to that podcast I was flabbergasted. Why couldn't they catch this guy?? Somehow he stayed one step ahead... 2w
BarbaraBB @JaclynW That is so sad, about your daughter‘s friend. A mothers worst nightmare. This must have hit you hard too. Wishing you lots of strength 🌹 2w
BarbaraBB @JaclynW And about Josh, it is such a pity they never arrested him. And he didn‘t seem overly concerned it the podcast / wire. I think indeed he made her disappear completely. 2w
JaclynW @BarbaraBB Definitely a worst nightmare scenario. I knew the boy well. I've worked a lot with him as I volunteer in the classrooms often. My heart is broken for the family. 2w
JaclynW @BarbaraBB Josh was super creepy. And totally guilty. I'm questioning the police work....or was Josh really that clever...what do you think? Did you listen to the entire podcast? 2w
BarbaraBB @JaclynW Yes I did and I do think the police should have put more pressure on him. Why didn‘t they ask him and the boys to take them to the place they went camping, for example? To me he didn‘t seem that smart. I‘d put some mental pressure om him but they stayed very pilote, never even asked him why he cleaned his whole house and minivan after being questioned. They were always a step behind him it seemed. Looking for the body instead of him... (edited) 2w
BarbaraBB @JaclynW ... making mistakes, which he did. And why didn‘t they really take the boys away from him and his creepy father? I feel frustrated by the case years after it happened. They let them all die without talking...! 2w
JaclynW @BarbaraBB YES!! Yes to all of that! My thoughts exactly! It's so aggravating!! They seem like obvious mistakes to me. But what do I know....I'm not a police officer! 😬😳🙄😔 Those poor innocent boys! That oldest boy knew something too I think. So many wasted opportunities.... 2w
BarbaraBB @JaclynW Yes, they should have spoken much more with the elders boy. It must have at least been possible to prove he lied!! Then again, when I heard the detective on the podcast he seemed very sincere. 2w
JaclynW @BarbaraBB Yes, I agree. I think police officers have a lot of red tape to get through before they can arrest and everything they gathered was just short of that. Unfortunately. I'm sure the officers involved were frustrated and were also convinced that Josh did it. That's the vibe I got from the podcast. I know laws are in place for a reason, but sometimes those same laws inacted to protect are the same ones that let guilty people go free. 1w

Later today RHCP‘s bassist Flea 🌶hosts his bookclub live on Instagram. This month‘s choice was News of the World. I liked the ‘reading the news‘ subject as well as the relation between the travelling news reader and the little girl who travels with him through 19th century #Texas to be returned to her family after being kipdnapped by Kiowa indians.

Three Women | Lisa Taddeo
post image

I don‘t get the hype about this book. I feel like I‘ve read it a thousand times before or seen it it real life. And I feel like Taddeo wanted to point out how all women in the end turned out to be victims, which maybe these three are, but it‘a not as if that‘s always the case when women are having sex with other people then their husband or without being married. So the book annoyed me more than I enjoyed it.

I seem to be the first to not like this book but I really didn‘t. Although the storyline set in the present (two men waiting in a Spanish harbour for the girl Dilly to arrive) had some potential, the storyline set in the past (about the two men doing drugs and things - a subject I mostly find annoying) didn‘t work for me. This author has been compared to Beckett. That may be a compliment but I‘m no fan of Beckett either. Not at all. #bookerprize

TrishB Great review though 👍🏻 4w
Ruthiella I‘m no fan of Beckett either! I might read this if it wins the Booker however just out of curiosity.😀 4w

A farmboy in Idaho in the 1950s becomes aware of injustice and bigotry; over the course of a long hot summer he witnesses a cruel murder and the false accusation of a black man. It is time for the boy to make up his mind and trust what he sees and believes in. He grows up fast. I enjoyed his voice and the atmosphere in this rural drama.

What a delightful witty book! Exactly what I was in the mood for. Bernadette is the most unconventional type of mother, surrounded by mothers who are judging her because she‘s not as active at the school of their kids as they are. So recognizable, it made me laugh out loud. A combination of events (all rather hilarious) lead to Bernadette‘s disappearance. Daughter Bee and her father set out to find her. Recommended!

This is one of the most beautiful lovestories I‘ve ever read. Liat and Hilmi meet in NYC and fall in love but they know it won‘t last. Because she is Israelian and he Palestinian. A wall and animosity seperate their two countries, which are so similar in a way. Yet love like theirs give hope that these barriers could be broken down one day. Because they talk and fight and make up and are willing to try again.
#Booked2019 A gift - thanks Cindy 😘

Reggie I was so mad at the woman in here. Like when that woman is flirting at the party with him and her friend is like doesn‘t that make you mad and then she says it‘s practice for when he‘s not hers anymore. And then she gets sick and he takes care of her. Ughhhhhh she soooo took him for granted. I loved this book though!!!! Nice review! 1mo

I am home again. After 32 amazing days across the US it‘s hard to go back to reality now. But things immediately look better since I opened these two bookish parcels. You‘re both so thoughtful, Carolyn and Katja, and I am really touched by your words and the books. Your recommendation of them means a lot! Thank you so much ❤️😘

Kalalalatja That was fast! I‘m glad my little package made it a bit easier to get home, but it is always bittersweet when a lovely trip ends. I have enjoyed seeing all your photos, and have been more than a little jealous 😉💕 1mo

And the last stop of my vacation: Washington DC. I know everybody loves this book and I‘m sure I will too but so far I have a hard time getting into it.
@JessNevertheless tonight we‘ll check out some of your restaurant suggestions! Thanks again for the excel-sheet 😘.

DivineDiana It was not a favorite of mine. 😕 1mo
Soubhiville I did not love it. 1mo
rethier1 Welcome to town!! There are lots of things to see and do in DC, but if you have time, check out Old Town Alexandria (just across the river in VA)! 1mo
See All 25 Comments
BarbaraBB @Soubhiville @DivineDiana Really? I thought everyone loved this one! But, I am a 100 pages in now and think I am getting the rhythm. 1mo
BarbaraBB @rethier1 Thank you. What a great town! One of the thing that surprised me most in my trip across the US is how all cities different from one another! DC is so interesting, I think I could spend weeks in the Smithsonian. I‘d love to visit Alexandria but I am afraid there won‘t be time ☺️ 1mo
rethier1 Sounds like you‘ve had a fabulous trip! It is pretty cool how every city has its own personality. 1mo
Jess861 I enjoyed this book but I didn't love it. 1mo
Leftcoastzen I think it‘s a good book , but I found it a little hard to get into as well. 1mo
Aimeesue Oooh, DC in August! Hothothot! At least the weekend's going to be a little less humid. The Mall at night can be pretty nice, too. And the downstairs cafeteria-type restaurant at the Museum of American History has the best fries in that area. 1mo
BarbaraBB @Aimeesue It sure is hot 😅 but we had a great day and we had dinner close to our AirBnB in Capitol Hill at Rose‘s Luxury, which was absolutely great! 1mo
youneverarrived I love this cover! I‘m in Washington in October, you‘ll have to let me know any must sees etc 😘 1mo
BarbaraBB @youneverarrived I will! It‘s a great place to visit. The locals can maybe give you some suggestions as well! @JessNevertheless @Aimeesue 1mo
Aimeesue @youneverarrived Definitely do some pre-trip planning. DC is full of things to see and it's impossible to see them ALL in one trip. Smithsonian museums are extensive and free. The National Park Service oversees a lot of sites, but some (Ford's Theater, Wash Monumant) require free tickets for definite times. I love Mount Vernon, but that's in Alexandria and not free. The restaurant there is great and has GW's favorite peanut soup. The crispy🔽 1mo
Aimeesue Brussels sprouts salad is my favorite. A visit to Politics and Prose is a must for bookish folks. NPS https://www.nps.gov/state/dc/index.htm 1mo
ValerieAndBooks You have been visiting some great places! I love DC too. What about Library of Congress? I haven‘t been there yet but maybe you can or have? 1mo
ValerieAndBooks Also I didn‘t care much for The Poisonwood Bible myself... funny thing is that I read it on a trip to London in 2000! 1mo
Aimeesue And I forgot about the Folger Shakespeare Library. If you want to see the reading room and the Seven Ages of Man stained glass windows, you have to reserve a spot on the tour on Sat or Sun. https://www.folger.edu 1mo
Cinfhen Can‘t believe it‘s your last day!!!!! Safe travels and I hope this book grows on you. I LOVED IT!!!!!!!! 1mo
youneverarrived Thanks so much @Aimeesue 😚 really helpful! I definitely plan on doing the Folger Shakespeare Library so thanks for the tip! I‘m there 5 nights so hoping to fit Alexandria in too. 1mo
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen Yes, I am home again now! We had such a great time! I do like the Kingsolver now (almost halfway through)! Have a great time there Cindy, you know time flies so make the most of it ❤️ 1mo
Cinfhen Welcome home!!! I‘m so glad you had an awesome trip!!! It sounds like you created so many great memories ❤️I‘m still relishing all my days left 1mo
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen Many, many memories to cherish for some time to come. You have a great country (I‘m not quoting DT) and I loved every moment of it! ❤️ 1mo
JessNevertheless Yay! Glad you got to check out Rose's Luxury! Hope you had an AMAZING time in DC!! Any other favorites I should pass along to other visitors? 1mo
BarbaraBB @JessNevertheless We went to Le Diplomate as well. Real French and very good. And in a nice neighborhood. Do you know it? Also we had an AirBnB in Capitol Hill, as you suggested. Very nice neighbourhood as well! So yes, we had an awesome time and I am missing it already! 1mo
JessNevertheless I do but I haven't actually eaten there yet, will definitely check it out eventually. Glad you liked the restaurant and the Hill. It is a really charming area! Hope you can visit again! 1mo

Turbulence | David Szalay
post image

Based on @Cinfhen ‘s review I bought this one and she was right, it is very good! Losely connected stories, all based on people travelling by plane to go home, visit friends, family, escape the turbulence of their own life etc.
Just like in Szalay‘s other book, All That Man Is, his characters and plots are so interesting that I would like to read (much) more about all of them.

(Pic: Our AirBnB in The Hamptons, New York)

Cinfhen It really needed to be longer!!!! I loved this book but it left me wanting more. Did it storm by you today???? How many books did you read on your trip??? How many new books are you bringing back??? 1mo
Kalalalatja Looks lovely! 1mo
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen we had a beautiful day but I think the storm is approaching now. I‘ll send you a copy of All that Man is when I‘m home, it is just as good as this one and longer! I just started my 17th book 😊 and bought 12... 🙈. We also bought an extra suitcase because my kids bought sneakers and stuff like that. How about you? Did Niki bring tons of book that had been waiting for you in her apartment 🤣?! (edited) 1mo
Cinfhen My stack of books is ridiculous 😜hubby is already having fits and I still have another 3 weeks left!!!! I‘d love to read All That Man Is xx thank you 😘have you posted your haul? I‘ll have to go back and see what you bought!!! I know you went to Strand 🙌🏻❤️ what an amazing trip you planned!!! I‘m sure kids had a blast. Zach ALWAYS brings back sneakers!! How far would you go to protect your loved ones? That‘s what keeps her parents going when Stella is arrested for murder. The story is told from the pov of al 3 members of this far from #perfect family. You feel you have to take side with one of them. As if they all stand trial - which in a way they do. I chose Stella because I could identify even less with the parents (esp the father). Interesting. #AyUpAugust

Lost Children Archive | Valeria Luiselli

A truly wonderful book that many many people should read. Beside the incredible well written plot of a marriage falling apart and the children noticing, it describes the reality of our current world, in which our leaders refuse child refugees at our borders, and leave them by themselves in the most inhumanly way. Must read and must win the #Bookerprize

Wow, what did I just read? An absolute mind-bending read about science, memory and time. A book of love and loss. Lanny: A Novel | Max Porter
post image

Lanny is a little boy, busy talking to trees and doing other interesting things in the rural village he recently moved to with his parents - who both still live partly in London, at least mentally.
His mother arranges for Lanny to have art lessons with Pete, a local (once famous and controversial) resident. This provides the catalyst for the plot.
Continued below ⬇️⬇️⬇️

(Pic: Niagara Falls)

BarbaraBB This book contains so much: current themes of our society go alongside the spiritual presence of Dead Papa Toothwort, an ancient spirit who has seen all life in this place.
Although the climax felt a bit too constructed to me, I really enjoyed this book and think it‘s a worthy candidate for the #bookerprize.

I had to read this one for the #1001books list but I have to admit it bored the hell out of me. I‘m sure it‘s a masterpiece which influenced many later books but listening to all those short stories (many of which I knew already because I am old and wise 😂) just was too much. I am glad I had the lovely and beautiful landscape of upstate New York to enjoy in the mean time.

(Pic: Aurora, Finger Lakes, New York)

AshleyHoss820 I personally enjoyed it but mostly because it gave me major nostalgia, which helps. 😂 I also read a few stories then read something else. All at once would be a bit tedious. 😊 2mo
Redwritinghood Oh, I remember reading these as a kid. Not sure I would enjoy them as much as an adult. 2mo
Kalalalatja I feel you! I read them all too close together, and they all got jumbled together in my mind 😅 2mo
See All 10 Comments
BarbaraBB @AshleyHoss820 I read them in between other books but even that didn‘t help! 2mo
BarbaraBB @Redwritinghood I read many of them as a kid too, a completely different experience! @Kalalalatja exactly. And I think Andersen‘s fairytales are way better, for kids as well as adults! 2mo
AshleyHoss820 @BarbaraBB Oh, man!! That sucks! Some things are better left in our childhood, sometimes! 😄😄😄 2mo
Liz_M I think this is best in an abridged form and only trading one or two stories a day. 2mo

Chocky | John Wyndham
post image

Matthew (12) doesn‘t have a simple imaginary friend, he is talking to Chocky, a supernatural invader who learns Matthew scientific stuff way beyond his years.

Starting from this simple fact, John Wyndham has written a clever and fascinating SF story, centered around the intriguing question: if there are intelligent beings from another world, how and when will they get in touch?

ValerieAndBooks Another city I‘ve loved that I haven‘t been to in years!! That Bourgeois spider sculpture must be a relatively new presence there ! 2mo
BarbaraBB @ValerieAndBooks I think it may be temporary. It reminds me of a similar spider in Tokyo and one I saw recently in Amsterdam (that I am sure is temporarily). But I couldn‘t find information about the artist. 2mo

I have no respect for the author at all after all I learned about him in the past few months (he should write an autobiography!), but I did like this book. It‘s a solid thriller with an unreliable narrator who has agoraphobia, and it kept me reading half the night.

Readergrrl After reading your comment about AJ Finn, I googled and found a FASCINATING piece in the New Yorker about him (Dan Mallory). You are correct! I‘d love to read more about his own story. BarbaraBB @Leftcoastzen What a great city, I had no idea! 2mo

Cinfhen Our friends have a beautiful beach house in Atlantic Beach, NY so we are heading there tomorrow night. We have theatre tickets for Thursday night and we‘re spending the weekend with our friends (and Niki & her boyfriend) at their beach house. Tuesday night we are going to see Queen preform in NYC then we‘re going to stay with different friends in NJ. We thought Toronto was great. We stayed at The Westin, right on the harbor. 2mo
BarbaraBB That sounds so good! Spending time with family and friends. And the beach. And NYC! Toronto‘s harbour is great, we are staying in Bellwoods, a really cool neighbourhood. Enjoy it all. And tell Niki to move to Chicago 😉😘 2mo
AlaMich I‘m so glad you loved Chicago! People do think we are just a “flyover” city, that the coastal cities (well, actually, we ARE a coastal city) are the real deal. But then they are surprised when they arrive and see how great Chicago really is. 1mo
BarbaraBB @AlaMich It is definitely more than a flyover city. I admit I was surprised but now that I know I won‘t forget it. I even liked it better than NYC (at least in summer, it was so crowded there, too crowded!) 1mo

I went in with high expectations. A man wants to live like ‘folks‘ did in prehistoric times and brings his family with him. They are submitting to his wishes even though they don‘t want to relive ancient times themselves. I liked the premise of this novella but wasn‘t that impressed in the end.

(Pic: ‘Our‘ California Zephyr train at Denver Station, Colorado)

RaimeyGallant I'm torn on the premise. 2mo
GatheringBooks the book seems to fit right in! :) 2mo

BarbaraBB @Kalalalatja Yes you were 😉 but almost all my peers here love this book and I wonder why I didn‘t. Reading back your reviews I can agree with all that is said. And yet it didn‘t have the impact on me it had on others. Unfortunately! 2mo
BarbaraBB @GatheringBooks You‘re right! I didn‘t even notice that myself 😀😘 2mo

I am travelling by train from Salt Lake City to Chicago. 36 hours through the scenery of Utah, Colorado, Nebraska, Iowa and Illinois. 36 hours to eat and sleep, read and listen to podcasts. Living the dream 😍😍

KarenUK That sounds wonderful.... enjoy! 💕 2mo
Megabooks Cool! I‘ve never been to Utah, Nebraska, or Iowa. 2mo
Blaire That sounds like a dream trip! I love long train rides. Utah is gorgeous! 2mo

Mdargusch Enjoy! I love trains! 2mo
Lizpixie I love train travel! I used to take the XPT from Sydney to Brisbane then change to a Qld sleeper to Bundaberg. 22hrs Of clickety clack bliss. I‘ve always wanted to do the Indian Pacific from Sydney to Perth, right across the middle of Australia, or the Ghan, Adelaide to Darwin. When I was a teenager I used to skip school & ride the trains around Metro Sydney or up into the Blue Mountains all day.🚂🚊 2mo
Lcsmcat I‘ve done that route, years ago. The scenery is amazing. 2mo
batsy Lovely 💕 2mo
Kalalalatja Sounds amazing! 2mo
Simona Enjoy❣️ 2mo
8little_paws that's super cool! I love a good long train ride. 2mo
Hooked_on_books You‘re really taking a bite out of the US. That‘s great! And it coordinates well with our reading USA challenge. 2mo
youneverarrived Sounds lovely ♥️ and this is a brilliant book! 2mo
AlaMich What are your Chicago plans? 2mo
BarbaraBB @AlaMich I hope to do a boat tour, visit the Art Institute and we have reservations for dinner at Alinea, my long time dream 😊. If you have any suggestions or must see‘s, I‘d love to hear them! 💕 2mo
BarbaraBB @Hooked_on_books Yes definitely, the reading challenge was perfectly planned! 2mo
AlaMich You are doing Chicago right!! My brother went to Alinea several years ago—also his dream—and said it was unforgettable. The Architectural Foundation boat tour is also fun and interesting. I know you don‘t have much time, so I would say you made very good choices! 😊 2mo
BarbaraBB @AlaMich Thanks! The tour by the Architectural Foundation seems great, thanks, I‘d love to see and hear more about Chicago‘s architecture! Thank you!! 💜 2mo
BarbaraBB @8little_paws @Simona @Kalalalatja @batsy @Lcsmcat @Mdargusch @Blaire @Megabooks @KarenUK It was a fantastic trip! In 36 hours the scenery went from desert to Rockies to agriculture, ending with the amazing skyline of Chicago. What a beautiful country you Americans have! So much space and emptiness! 😍 Also, many Amish people on the train. Super fascinating for this European - I never saw them before! (edited) 2mo
8little_paws @BarbaraBB I live in Chicago. Ask me anything! 2mo
8little_paws And yes the amish and mennonites often travel by rail. I grew up in the heart of new York's amish country! 2mo
8little_paws For a boat tour the architecture foundation one is great , you can also just buy a ticket for a water taxi and cruise around that way! Consider visiting the Chicago cultural center as well. If you want any other food recommendations just ask. 2mo
BarbaraBB @8little_paws @AlaMich You are so lucky! I am blown away by Chicago! I had no idea that it would be so beautiful and atmospheric and wow, I could live here! The Architecture Tour was awesome, Alinea was living the dream and next will be the White Socks game. I am smitten! 😍😍 Also, @Cinfhen thank Niki for her restaurant recs! We had breakfast at Cindy‘s, a great rooftop place viewing Millennium Park ❤️❤️ (edited) 2mo
BarbaraBB @8little_paws Thank you so much for your offer, I didn‘t know or I would have asked you a thousand things. We only have two days here unfortunately so we will be leaving again tomorrow. But I definitely want to come back! 2mo
Cinfhen Just seeing this now!!! Yay 😁 2mo
JaclynW The train would be such a fun way to travel! 2mo
emilyhaldi Omg so jealous of this!!! We Americans don‘t take advantage of the trains here... sounds dreamy ☺️ 2mo
BarbaraBB @emilyhaldi I noticed that about Americans using the train. It were mainly Amish/Mennonites, which I found very interesting as well! the train goes way slower than in Europe so I can understand you go by plane to cover such distance. But for me it was a great way to travel and see all the scenery. I loved it! 2mo

The Mother: A Novel | Yvvette Edwards

A parent‘s nightmare: their 16 years old kid was murdered. After seven months of grief and estrangement the trial against the boy who is accused of the murder starts.
A sad read but it didn‘t touch me as much as A Cupboard Full of Coats did.

(Pic: Temple Square in Salt Lake City, Utah)

AbigailDays That looks far more like a gothic cathedral than any of the temples I've seen. Thank you for sharing another beautiful picture! 2mo
Freespirit Wonderful picture😍 2mo
BarbaraBB @AbigailDays @Freespirit Thank you, you‘re so kind! It was special to see this Temple after reading a book about the Mormons of whom I knew next to nothing. 2mo

JaclynW How did you like Temple Square? Did you go into any of the buildings to get more of the history? I can recommend lots more books about LDS culture (nonfiction and fiction) if you are curious. 2mo
BarbaraBB @JaclynW We had a tour around Temple Square. Quite interesting. There was a free performance at the Tabernacle! 2mo
JaclynW @BarbaraBB Oh nice! The performances are cool. And yes, it is quite interesting. 2mo

There we go again. No longer the #manbooker but still the #bookerprize. This year‘s longlist looks really exciting I think!

LauraJ Oh no! More books to read 📚 2mo
Ruthiella I love book prize long lists! I‘ve only read two (both thanks to the TOB)🎈 2mo
Kalalalatja I haven‘t read any of these! But I own the Obioma book, so hopefully I‘ll get to that soonish 🤞 2mo

Simona O yes, looks quite challenging! 2mo
jhod I think its a great list, though I'm scared about the doorstop! 2mo
Cathythoughts Yes! I‘m looking at that door step too ..... 1000 pages 2mo
AnneCecilie I haven‘t read any of these. So I‘ll start with the one I already own, Lanny. Then I‘ll see if my library has any of these. 2mo
jhod @Cathythoughts just read the goodreads reviews and they make me want to read it! 2mo
Cinfhen Need to investigate 🤓 2mo
Severnmeadows I thought Girl, Woman, Other was a brilliant book, I really enjoyed it. 2mo
BarbaraBB @Severnmeadows Thank you! It‘s one of the most appealing to me! 2mo

You were so right, @JaclynW this bookshop is absolute fantastic! Such nice people working there! They helped my daughter choose some YA and I had a hard time buying just one book!

Amiable Such a cute-looking store! 2mo
AbigailDays Vacation idea: pick an interstate and visit all the cute, tiny bookstores along it. I'll have to try this! 2mo
BarbaraBB @AbigailDays And make it even better: stay away from the interstate and take the scenic byways! ❤️❤️ 2mo

Tanisha_A Such a pretty sight. 😍 2mo
Cathythoughts Looks gorgeous 2mo
Hooked_on_books Very appealing storefront 2mo
JaclynW The people there definitely make the bookstore even more special. The kids area is darling. They often have special events and author visits. We love it there! We don't make it there often unfortunately because we live an hour north of the store which makes it difficult for frequent visits. 2mo
JaclynW If you make it to the main branch of the SLC library, walk to the roof top for a great view of the city. 2mo
BarbaraBB @JaclynW We left SLC but had a great time, also thanks to you! It is a place unlike any other and with some good food too! 2mo
JaclynW @BarbaraBB It is definitely a unique place. I'm glad you enjoyed your time here.😊 Safe travels to your remaining destinations! 2mo

Hooked_on_books Are you thinking about Mormon Fundamentalists while in Utah? 😱 2mo
Kalalalatja I‘m living through your pics 😍🙌 2mo
Lcsmcat Lovely picture! I miss those mountains! 2mo
BarbaraBB @Megabooks No, but I almost bought it yesterday! Glad I didn‘t. Is it not worth it? 2mo
BarbaraBB @Hooked_on_books Yes! I feel the need for polygamy 😂. 2mo
Megabooks @BarbaraBB I‘m trying to decide whether to push through a section I find psychologically unpleasant. I like books that cover nearly the entirety women‘s lives, but it‘s just icky for me. I‘ll put it in a spoiler tag. 2mo
Megabooks One of the girls gets molested by her uncle. The scenes aren‘t graphic, but they‘re unpleasantly protracted for me personally. I just had to put it down. 2mo
AbigailDays Ohh, your pictures are just beautiful! I don't know how you concentrate on reading when the mountains look like that. 😄 2mo
Rachel_nyc I felt pretty much the same about this one (unsurprisingly!). It was a fun read but I figured out the “twist” early o and it felt very anti-climactic especially after all the hype. 2mo
BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain @JennyM @TrishB @Andrew65 @Kalalalatja @Lcsmcat @AbigailDays Thank you, I am so happy and grateful for having a chance to make this trip and visit all these wonderful places 💕 (edited) 2mo
BarbaraBB @Megabooks I have just read two books about that same subject so I think I‘ll let this one go by for now. Thanks for the update! 😘 2mo
BarbaraBB @Rachel_nyc Of course we felt the same 💕! The twist wasn‘t very surprising indeed. I don‘t think the book needed that twist though, it was a bit far fetched imo! 2mo
Rachel_nyc @BarbaraBB Agreed! An enjoyable, breezy read but as you said, not one that stuck with me. Btw, I love seeing all of your photos of the trip! 2mo
BarbaraBB @Rachel_nyc Thanks! We are leaving the west soon, later this week we‘ll go by train to Chicago. I think that will be completely different! For now it‘s Salt Lake City though, a city different from any other American city I‘ve seen so far! 2mo
Cinfhen This was just meh for me too but your view is fabulous 2mo
JaclynW Our mountains!! 😍 Mountains are one of the things I love most about living in Utah. Fun fact: The Paramount Pictures logo was modeled after mountain I live on. If you get a chance to come back to Utah, go down south to our red rock mountains. They are completely opposite of what is up north. (Bryce Canyon, Zion, Moab, Canyonlands, etc.) 2mo
BarbaraBB I‘d really like to come back some day to see the south of Utah. It was the most obvious choice of course to go there after arriving in San Francisco but we like to go a bit off the beaten track. @JaclynW (edited) 2mo

Out of the blue I found this lovely bookstore in Park City, a lovely small town in the Wasatch mountains. Thanks for your suggestion @JaclynW it is so beautiful here! In the bookstore, that also sells icecream and caramel apples, I bought the tagged book because everyone is raving about it on Litsy and it is way out of my comfort zone!

AlaMich If you‘ve never had a caramel apple, do yourself a favor and get one!! 2mo
AmyG What @AlaMich said. They are amazing. 2mo

Hooked_on_books Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory!!! I haven‘t seen one of those in so long. We went there when I was a kid in Colorado. They always had a giant plush bear outside. 2mo
BarbaraBB @AlaMich @AmyG I didn‘t had a chance when I posted this but I discovered another one in Salt Lake City where I am now, so I‘ll make sure to get one! @Hooked_on_books 2mo
arubabookwoman My sister has a home there in Park City so I've visited a couple of times, only in the summer (not a skiier). It's very pretty there. 2mo
BarbaraBB @arubabookwoman I was pleasantly surprised too! Such a pretty place! Have you visited the bookshop? 2mo
Cinfhen Stunning view!!! Looks like you‘re having an awesome time 😍 2mo
Purrfectpages I love their sign! 🐱 📚 2mo
JaclynW Oh yes!!! I love that bookstore too! I have been several times and I always buy me a chocolate treat or a caramel apple. I love Park City! It's gorgeous up there year round! I'm glad you are enjoying your stay! 2mo
JaclynW I should have recommended some restaurants up there. Did you find a nice place? There are several good restaurants up there. 2mo
BarbaraBB @JaclynW It really is a great place and the mountains surrounding it as well. So beautiful! We had lunch at 501 On Main Street, which is across from Dolly! 2mo

After Trump‘s election the world turns against a Muslim doctor working in rural Minnesota, his family and his religion. He encounters a lot of hate and tries to turn his anger into something positive: a lecture to explain Islam and address prejudices against it (terrorism, women, sharia).
A thought provoking book about an important subject. I could say much more but will refrain from politics here.

kspenmoll Stacked! Thanks for a good review. (edited) 2mo

Kalalalatja Great review! And I‘m with @TrishB ☝️ 2mo
JackOBotts I heard an interview with him NPR a week ago. I must‘ve missed the part where they mentioned he wrote a book. Stacked! 📚 2mo
AbigailDays Thanks for such a good review, that sounds like a really cool book. And another beautiful picture! 2mo
BarbaraBB His rage against Trump is so real and understandable. And I love that he demands an explanation from everyone who voted for him in a town where talking politics is a taboo. (edited) 2mo
BarbaraBB Regarding the religion part: he writes a lecture explaining Islam to the locals, to get rid of prejudices. He compared the Quran with the Bible and shows they are much alike. My problem with this part however is that most prejudices against Islam are not based on its religious roots but on its interpretation by groups in various countries in practicing it (or using the religion for other purposes). (edited) 2mo
BarbaraBB There is no real dialogue with the people who come and listen to his lecture. That is a chance missed I think. He is a well educated man who impresses with his knowledge but I doubt if he really connects to his public (the people in his tiny, religious and conservative town). 2mo
BarbaraBB @TrishB @Kalalalatja Above some of my thoughts regarding the political and religious themes of the book! 2mo
Kalalalatja Very insightful comments! 2mo
TrishB Thanks Barbara. Have stacked already! I think the Bible is also used like this - extremist groups interpreting its messages. I‘m not religious, but extremism is a problem with most religions worldwide. I would also love an explanation as to why people voted for hate filled Trump. Waiting for a GE in U.K. now. 2mo
Cinfhen Wow!! You‘re hitting so many states!!! Excited to be catching up on your trip 2mo
BarbaraTheBibliophage This sounds fascinating. Thanks for taking the time to review and include the detailed comments. It‘s going on my TBR! 2mo

Baker strikes again with this fantastic book about a white boy who becomes obsessed with black jazz music and becomes the best horn player LA or New York has known until then. The reader feels the trip that his life becomes, drowned in alcohol, steamy as an underground jazz club.

I did like Daisy Jones, buy this book really rocks!

CarolynM I definitely need to read this one. Stacked 🙂 2mo

BarbaraBB @CarolynM I think you do need to read it indeed 😉❤️ 2mo
BarbaraBB @DebinHawaii Unfortunately not. We need to get west (travelling from San Francisco) to make it in time to Utah where we are expected on the 23th 😀 2mo
BarbaraBB @DebinHawaii Is it a coincidence that @Hooked_on_books lived in Oregon too before moving to Hawaii? 2mo
DebinHawaii @BarbaraBB Bummer! But better on the wallet & checked baggage weight I suppose! 😆 (edited) 2mo
DebinHawaii @BarbaraBB @Hooked_on_books Hah! It's the Oregon rain! ☔️💦 Actually there are a lot of Hawaii people who go to university and/or move to Oregon & Washington so it's an exchange program I guess! 🤣🤣🤣 2mo
AlaMich This sounds like such an amazing trip, and you are definitely making the most of it! 2mo
BarbaraBB @AlaMich I am definitely trying to! It‘s a once in a lifetime trip probably 💕 2mo
Hooked_on_books @BarbaraBB @DebinHawaii There definitely seems to be an Oregon-Hawaii connection! I‘ve only lived here a few months but have met several Oregonians. The funny part is that I moved from a place in Oregon (north coast) that has twice the average US rainfall yet only half the rainfall I have here in Hawaii. I live in a rain shadow on purpose, as I grow a rainforest flower. Not the Hawaii most people think of! 🌺💦 2mo
AbigailDays The colors on those hills are so bright it almost doesn't seem real! You are giving me so many new places to add to my bucket list (and books to the reading list! ) 2mo
QuintusMarcus I love Bix‘s music - I‘ve always intended to read this book, but thought it would be to depressing. If you‘ve never heard them, look up Bix‘s recordings with a very young Bing Crosby - superb! 2mo
BarbaraBB @AbigailDays The colore are unreal, it is really gorgeous. One of the most beautiful landscapes I ever saw. Which State do you live in? 2mo
BarbaraBB @QuintusMarcus I am going to listen to them, thanks for the suggestion! The book is not depressing, it is very intense though! 2mo
AbigailDays @BarbaraBB I'm much further south, where the cactus and agave grow. I've never been up to Oregon, I had this idea it was all rain and pine trees! 2mo
BarbaraBB @AbigailDays I saw your pictures, it looks amazing! There are many pine trees in Oregon as well, it is really diverse! 2mo
