I know what I‘ll be doing for the upcoming months! Hunting the rooster! I‘ve read five so far and have Matrix on my shelves. I voted for The Trees as my zombie. I love the Tournament of Books! #tob22

BarbaraBB @Cinfhen I know you‘ll want to read the shortlist too and just before you start hunting those books: I‘ve send you one for Christmas. Let me know if you want me to tell you which one! 😘 15h
Ruthiella I just downloaded The Echo Wife and The Confessions of Copeland Cane from the library and put most of the others on hold. Looks like I‘ll have to buy two or three...#ToB2022 (edited) 13h
Karkar This years list is almost totally made up of books I want to read. Such a hard choice on the zombie. 13h
See All 8 Comments
BarbaraBB @Ruthiella I found four cheap copies online. The others I‘ll probably end up buying too but for now I have controlled myself! 9h
BarbaraBB @Karkar it‘s a great list, I think so too. A mix op popular ones and books I‘ve never heard of! 9h
Cinfhen It really is a solid list where I can see several books winning and I‘d be happy. I just don‘t want the Rooney or Ishiguro to win. I‘m still rooting for Lockwood!!!!! But I have 11 books to still read. 9h
BarbaraBB Now I hope you haven‘t read the one I just sent you 🤞🏽 @Cinfhen 8h
Cinfhen Thank you xx 😘 8h

Where I live there is a so called ‘Top 2000‘ on the radio from December 26-31. It‘s always something to look forward to. Everyone can vote for up to 35 favorite songs and for me it‘s the ultimate #DecemberChill. We‘re listening day and night and it brings back so many memories. Pictured are the songs I voted for, last year‘s Top 2000 you find here:

Cinfhen Yay !! This is going right into my playlist rotation 🤟🏽✌🏽🙌🏻 1d

Billypar Great picks! Neneh Cherry is someone I discovered more recently - she's had such an interesting career. This sounds like a fun annual tradition. 11h
BarbaraBB @Billypar I have discovered Neneh Cherry recently too. She‘s much more interesting than I thought. And Woman is a real powerful song 🎶 9h

Mitch Oh no! My relaxation soundtrack is silence! I can just about love the crack from the logs on the fire but if not I want it pin droppingly quiet! 🤣 1d
TheBookHippie I‘ve been listening to Norah Jones I Dream Of Christmas and Jazz Christmas music 🎶🎶🎶🎶 1d
Megabooks I‘m with you @Mitch ! I don‘t usually reach for music when I want to chill. Although I like having a white noise machine or app. Snuggling with my dog is a bonus. 😁 1d
Librarybelle Totally agree, @Mitch and @Megabooks ! Silence is my perfect relaxing soundtrack. Though, I‘ll put on some classical music if I want some background ambience. I love Mozart, so he‘s my usual go to in those situations. 1d
Centique @TheBookHippie I love Norah Jones too. So very chill 😍 8h

My December plans. Lots of books I‘ve been excited about. Some #ToBlonglist books, a couple of buddyreading books, the last one for Asia and the first ones for Africa. For example Out of Africa, which is my #bookspin as well. The #Doublespin is The Dead Girls‘ Class Trip.

TheLudicReader I liked The Current, but not as much as Descent. That‘s a great selection of books. 2d
BarbaraBB @TheLudicReader I‘ve never read him. Will look out for Descent! X 2d

The Trees: A Novel | Percival Everett
post image

This is a book about retribution for all the black people that have been lynched in the US. White men are being killed and mutilated. First in Mississippi, but soon all over the country.

Special agents come investigating what is happening. Everett‘s dialogues are sharp and funny, as always. The plot is extremely violent. A challenging and brutal pageturner. #ToBLonglist

(Pic: First snow of the year!)

Ruthiella This is another one that I will for sure read - shortlist or no. Still, nothing I‘ve read from Everett has been as great as the first book I tried 4d
squirrelbrain I haven‘t read anything by this author. It‘s one I can‘t get hold of, yet, but I will keep trying. 4d
BarbaraBB @Ruthiella It‘s a must read then for you. It‘s so good. I loved So Much Blue too, but Telephone as well. This one is completely different again! 4d
See All 9 Comments
BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain If you haven‘t read him I should start with 4d
Megabooks I wonder if he‘ll make the shortlist two years in a row?? I enjoyed telephone, but I‘m not sure about this one. 4d
BarbaraBB @Megabooks I doubt he will make it two times in a row indeed but I woud hope so. It is however really really brutal. And yet hilarious at times. I think Everett is king of unique. 4d
Ruthiella @Megabooks That‘s the question, right? Will it make the shortlist... 4d
Cinfhen I really liked Telephone, it was quirky but solid/ I think I‘ll try this one regardless if it goes through to the next round. 3d
batsy I have my eye on this one! Glad it was a pick for you. 3d

I had a good week! Loved the tagged one and also Intimacies. Doha and the Winman were okay reads for me.

EmilyM I just finished Still Life and liked it but felt like it dragged in places. I'm not sure the last part about Forester was even necessary, or maybe I missed something? 7d
Megabooks Just broke down and ordered the kitmura! 7d
Cinfhen I don‘t think Winman is for me, I bailed on still life and I didn‘t love Tin Man the way others on Litsy did 🤷🏼‍♀️ 6d

Intimacies | Katie Kitamura

I enjoyed this quiet novel quite a lot. The narrator has moved temporarily to the Netherlands to work as an interpreter for the International Court of Justice. She has met a few very different people and the story tells about her connection to them and the ethical implications of her job. She wants to belong, to the Court and The Hague, the city she now lives in, but can she? #ToBLonglist

Ruthiella I really like Kitamura‘s understated style. I liked this a lot too as well as 1w
Cinfhen It‘s one I‘m interested in reading no matter it‘s making the shortlist. Do you think it will? Does it deserve to? I still want to read her first book as well @Ruthiella (thanks for the reminder) 😘😘 1w
BarbaraBB @Ruthiella I liked this one much more than A Separation but now I want to read that one again. I‘m not sure if it deserves to make the shortlist @Cinfhen. So many strong contenders and this one is quite straightforward 🤷🏻‍♀️ 1w

Cinfhen Hmmmm, interesting. I‘ll have to pick it up sooner than later. I didn‘t care for Harlem Shuffle @squirrelbrain 😞Have fun this weekend, Helen!!! 1w
BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain Is it good? I was underwhelmed by The Nickel Boys and even The Underground Railroad so I am in no hurry to read this one 🤷🏻‍♀️ 1w
squirrelbrain Thanks @cinfhen - setting off very shortly! 1w
squirrelbrain I‘m not loving it so far Barbara. I liked The Nickel Boys, but wasn‘t keen on The Underground Railroad. I‘d give it a miss unless it makes the shortlist…. 1w
Megabooks I love almost everything this publisher puts out so I should probably pick this up. Great review! 1w

#UnpopularOpinion Unfortunately I did not enjoy this book as much as I expected to. While I mostly enjoy character-driven novels, I do want some sort of plot too. Considering how many decades this story spans, I was expecting a bit more of that. Instead I was sidetracked by keeping track of all characters and all dialogues - without quotation marks. So I am afraid I didn‘t get as much out of the book as I had hoped, based on all reviews I read.

TrishB Aww, that‘s a shame! I loved it, but that‘s the way of books. (edited) 1w
Jas16 I was so excited about this book but didn‘t love it either. 1w
squirrelbrain Oh dear, I loved it too, like @TrishB but the world would be a boring place if we all liked the same books! 1w

catebutler Most of my book group had the same opinion. They really hated the format. I had to re-read about 100 pages at the beginning. And switch from an ebook to a physical book. For some reason, the second I did this, it just clicked. And I actually really enjoyed it. I do think I dug deeper and went down a few rabbits holes, when everyone else in my book club didn‘t. But the polarised discussion we had was so intriguing! Thank you for tagging me above! 1w

My Life in Doha: Between Dream and Reality | Rachel Hajar, Rachel Hajar M D

The author and her Arab Muslim husband move to #Qatar. She came from the Philippines, raised Catholic, and met him in the US where they both attended med school. It is fascinating how she found her way in this conservative country, staying true to her beliefs. She even works as a cardiologist while raising 5 kids. I just wish she would be a bit more critical about what definitely is not the most correct country on earth.

Real Life: A Novel | Brandon Taylor

Why do people hurt eachother so much? And themselves? Why being so hard on yourself and one another? This book is real life. Not mine, but it feels so real. Wallace does and my heart goes out to him. The loneliness of the black gay boy trying to fit in the the white Midwest. Hiding in science. All that anger and the feeling of not being worthy of love. All the misunderstandings but also the tenderness. The book touched me deeply. #bookspin #pop21

Megabooks This was fantastic! Glad you enjoyed it, too! 2w
Cinfhen I need to try again with this book! I started the audio last summer but I wasn‘t feeling it 2w

This book pulled me right in. I loved My Lovely Wife and had high expectations. Three siblings go on a road trip through the US to bury their grandfather‘s ashes by which they will earn their inheritance. I soon discovered they are all unreliability and have their secrets. The tension builds up fine but in the end I felt let down. Between a pick and a so-so.

Cinfhen I started Shadow King earlier this year, it wasn‘t an easy read and the audio was VERY long. I might go back but I have lots of options for that prompt. I just like the #DoubleDip or #TriplePlay 2w
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen I need as much #TriplePlays as I can get since Africa is really big 🤓 2w

I‘ve finally come up with my plans for #Booked2022. They will no doubt change completely but I think it‘s fair to assume a lot of them will be used for #ReadingAfrica2022 as well.

Here are my #Winter choices:

1 about religion: Matrix
2 title repeats itself: What is the What
3 set in China: Land of Big Numbers
4 weather term in title: Empire of the Sun
5 black-owned publisher: Baho!
6 eco-feminist: Wij zijn licht (Dutch)

sarahbarnes This is some impressive planning! 😍 2w
Suet624 I wish I could plan ahead like you do. I‘m such a contrarian that I refuse to do anything I “require” myself to do. 2w
Megabooks 1 & 3 👍🏻👍🏻 2w

BarbaraBB @Suet624 haha, that‘s cool! I enjoy the planning but much less the execution. I am such a restless person, I can‘t stand the predictable so I definitely won‘t go with my own plan 🤦🏻‍♀️😀 2w
Cinfhen I love all the crossover ideas…I‘m still EAGERLY awaiting #PoP22 2w
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen Me too! I‘ve been visiting their page for days now! 2w
Suet624 Ah, so you are familiar with my way of being. 💕 2w
BarbaraTheBibliophage Can‘t wait to see your reviews on these! (Or whatever you ultimately read …) 2w

During the closing stages of WWII recently orphaned young Felix arrives in Jerusalem at the boarding house of a sort-of-relative, the hilarious Miss Bohun.
She is taking as much money as she can from her houseguests, while also pretending to be self-sacrificing and motivated entirely by kindness.
At first the reader picks up on much more of this drama than Felix does but then a new boarder arrives, the young widow Mrs. Ellis. ⬇️

BarbaraBB ⬆️⬆️ While she keeps Felix at arm‘s length, she does share her thoughts on Miss Bohun and the world with him. A poignant story about the loss of innocence. (edited) 2w

In this very experimental book Kate muses about life and art. She seems to have travelled the world, even lived in museums. But I can‘t be sure, her thoughts are so chaotic it was hard to follow. Some wonderful insights though, like this one: “One of the things people generally admired about Van Gogh, even though they were not always aware of it, was the way he could make even a chair seem to have anxiety in it. Or a pair of boots”. #1001books

Graywacke Sounds kind of fascinating 3w

#WeeklyForecast 46/21 (more of a #restoftheyearforecast actually!)

Okay, here‘s the plan. On the left are the books I need to read to finish #Booked2021, #ReadingAsia2021, #pop21, #52booksin21 and keep up with the #NYRBbookclub.
On the right are the books I want to read (longlist #ToB22), birthday presents etc.

It seems doable I think. Now I just have to start them. Oh and the tagged book is the one I am currently reading 🤦🏻‍♀️🤣

KristiAhlers I just started Still Life. I‘ve read the Matrix. Happy reading! 3w
Cinfhen It‘s a solid plan 🥰you can do it 3w

I liked this book more than I expected. I had been dreading it for years but I actually had a good time on the road with Sal and his crazy friends! The book is a tribute to America. The country, the scenery and the people. A bit cliché at times but still enjoyable. #1001books

squirrelbrain I read this as a teenager and didn‘t really ‘get‘ it. I ought to try again but I just can‘t seem to get round to it. 3w
Cinfhen Awesome photo 😍 3w
Lcsmcat I‘m like you. I feel like I should read it, but kind of dread it being too “irresponsible young white men make ‘discovery‘ that everyone already knows.” Maybe I‘ll get to it sooner based on your recommendation. 3w

BarbaraBB @rachaich Did you enjoy it? 3w
rachaich @BarbaraBB first time I wanted to eminate his journey. Second read I expected his choices but was shocked by the social poverty and discrimination against groups. I also watched the film after that read... I'm quite a fan 😊😊😊 3w
BarbaraBB @rachaich That‘s interesting! I was shocked by the social poverty as well. It‘s not really the American dream! I must watch the movie! 3w

#WeeklyForecast 45/21

Today I finished the 2 books I was reading and now I‘m unsure what to pick up. I‘m thinking of the tagged one but I also have to start The Diviners for the #manawakans buddyread as well as School for Love for the #NYRBbookClub. And now that I‘m writing this I realize I forgot to add #DrZ for #DecemberChill, which I really must start too. So much required reading makes me unmotivated and escaping in a podcast 🤫😇

TrishB Yep 😁 4w

An Untouched House | Willem Frederik Hermans
post image

In the last months of WWII a partisan enters an abandoned villa in a luxury seaside resort, somewhere in Central Europe. Initially it is a peaceful place to stay. When a German regiment arrives for quartering, he pretends he is the owner of the house and leaves the ground floor to the Germans. Then the real owner returns unexpectedly.

This is a novella of a deceptive simplicity, behind which lies a particularly complex constructed story.

Megabooks Great review! 4w
batsy Lovely review. I really liked this one in translation, as well. Just really well done in how it melds memory and imagery within the scope of language. 4w

This book is written by a Dutch author whose kids went to school with mine. ‘A Good Mother‘ is the story of his ex, the mother of their kids. Set in our neighborhood, I recognize almost everything and anyone but I never knew that living has been so hard for the mother.⬇️⬇️

(Pic: Isle of Skye, Scotland)

BarbaraBB ⬆️⬆️ Her struggle with life, with doing all the things that come natural to most of us but to her are just too much. She just wants to lay down and rest. And be a mother. This book breaks my heart. 4w
DivineDiana Is it a memoir? 4w
BarbaraBB @DivineDiana I think you can call it that. He writes in his afterword it is fiction but I know it isn‘t. I hope it will be translated in English like his other books. I‘d highly recommend it. 4w

This fast moving thriller reads like a movie. A woman gets stuck in a highway rest stop during a blizzard in the Rocky Mountains. She discovers one of the people she is stuck with, has abducted a child and is determined to save that child. Entertaining yet forgettable! Between a so-so and a pick.

BarbaraBB @Singout you can use the googleform to keep track if you like (not obliged!). Tagging us and use the hashtag when you‘ve read a book is nice for all participants, because we can inspire each other with books we read for the challenge! 2w
BarbaraTheBibliophage I may join later in the year for an abbreviated challenge. I‘m still finishing the books I picked from Asia and since I own them, I‘m just going to keep on with the 2021 into 2022. 😘 2w
BarbaraBB @BarbaraTheBibliophage That is perfect of course, that you‘re continuing Asia next year! 2w

#WeeklyForecast 44/21

In progress: the tagged one, which is entertaining, and At Night‘s End. Next will be one for #ReadingAsia2021, and a Dutch one, written by a successful Dutch author who I happen to know.

Cinfhen That‘s cool that you know the author!! 1mo
squirrelbrain Looks like a great upcoming week! 1mo
