Winter in Sokcho | ELISA. SHUA DUSAPIN

She studied at the university in Seoul but now lives in Sokcho, a desolate fisherman‘s village near the North Korean border. She works in a small guesthouse where one of the guests is a French man, apparently as lonely as she is.
It‘s not a cheerful read but it‘s wonderful, this little book about not daring to choose life and its risks over the safety of solitude.

Then the first half of Our Wives Under the Sea on August 20th, and the second half on August 27th.

@Megabooks @squirrelbrain and I are looking forward to seeing you there.

After the final discussion you all can vote for your winner and we will have our #CampLitsy Summer champion!

mklong Yay! Either/Or is the one I‘m most looking forward to 3d
BarbaraBB @mklong I am looking forward to it too but I am also very intrigued by that cover of 3d
squirrelbrain I too love the cover of Our Wives Barbara. @Oryx has read that one already…. 3d
Oryx @BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain It's a strange book Our Wives - I'm looking forward to hearing what others think of it. 3d
Leniverse These two both look suitably weird. I look forward to them, but I'm also glad for the time to read the Idiot before Either/Or. 3d
BkClubCare @Leniverse - I proudly state that I loved The Idiot ✋ (edited) 3d
BkClubCare @mklong - ditto, I am definitely going to break my budget to buy E/O 3d
BarbaraBB @Leniverse We did that on purpose. @batsy too mentioned that she hoped to read The Idiot first. We thought it best therefore to wait with E/O until August! 3d
batsy Oh, nice! Thank you for the thoughtful planning 💜 I definitely plan to do my homework first and read The Idiot before August 🤞🏾😆 3d
Megabooks I also have to read The Idiot first as well @batsy and @leniverse . I‘m going to look for it used when I sell several books…I‘m certainly not going to get anything else..😉😁 So glad to have everyone excited with us!! 3d
Hooked_on_books Nice! I really look forward to both of these reads and discussions! 2d
Desha I‘m another one who has to read The Idiot first so it‘s on hold at the library and I bought my copy of Either/Or! I‘m so looking forward to these!! Thank you so much for hosting Camp Litsy! (edited) 1d
BarbaraBB @Desha I hope you‘ll like both of them and we‘re happy you‘ve joined us 🤍 24h

This is a wonderful read about Cyprus and love. Greek and Turkish people have lived separately for ages at the island, but Kostas and Isabella know how to find each other across visible and invisible borders. The fig tree is their witness and has always been.
Quite special! Thank you for choosing this book for me Meg!

A YA novel set in the #Gabon jungle about a boy coming of age all alone with a bunch of chimpanzees is not generally a book I‘d choose. And I wasn‘t really interested but I admit the ending was touching and sweet.

vlwelser Great pic. Audiobooking in a museum/exhibition is one of my favorite activities. 4d
BarbaraBB @vlwelser It was new to me but a good combination indeed! 3d
Librarybelle Great picture! I‘ve not listened to an audiobook while at an exhibition, but I‘ve never really thought about it. Something interesting to try! 3d

Thanks all for participating in the poll! We‘ve tallied the votes, and our summer reads are now set. We‘re excited to share the winners!

We‘ll read and discuss half of a book each week. At the end of the month, Camp decides which of the two books we just read heads to the end-of-summer finale. There, you‘ll cast a final vote to decide which book will be our #CampLitsy summer champion!

We‘ll get back to you with the schedule soon!

Hooked_on_books Interesting mix! I‘ve read two already, so I‘m in good shape! 4d
BarbaraBB @Hooked_on_books It would have been VERY surprising if you hadn't read one the books 😉 I hope you like the outcome, fortunately one of the books you voted for made it into our summer reads! 4d
batsy This looks great! I'm looking forward to reading all of these as long I'll be able to access a copy 🙂 (and maybe squeezing in The Idiot before Either/Or!) 4d
Cinfhen Thank you hosts!!!! I‘m more excited for our tournament- will try my best to read all but not promising 4d
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen You're having a busy Summer so don't make any promises! You know we're happy to have you join in the reading and discussions whenever you can! 4d
BarbaraBB @batsy I didn't even know Either/Or is a sequel to The Idiot but I liked that one too. 4d
Centique That‘s exciting! 4d
Leniverse I haven't read any of these, or the Idiot. And I'm still working on the Women's Prize shortlist. 😅 I better have myself a month long readathon. 4d
merelybookish Well this feels like a true TOB list. A mix of familiar, unfamiliar (to me) & a little weird. 👏👏 I also hope to read them all! 4d
youneverarrived Exciting! Hopefully I‘ll be able to squeeze in some reading while baby is feeding etc, might go the audio route for some of these. 4d
Megabooks Woo hoo!! So excited about this list! Soon we‘ll release the brackets. 👍🏻 @BkClubCare and @zenwldflwr noticed yours weren‘t blue and linked so tagging you here. @Suet624 I remember you also wanted to be on the tag list even if you didn‘t vote. Welcome to camp everyone!! 😁📚🏕 4d
Addison_Reads Awesome! I've read 3 already, now I just need to get a copy of the others. I'm excited for our #CampLitsy 😁 4d
Suet624 @Megabooks yes! Thank you so much for including me. 4d
BkClubCare 😍🤩🥸 Let‘s DO this! 📚 🏕 (edited) 4d
rockpools I‘m so excited about this! (Even if half a book a week suddenly sounds LOADS!) There a few on here I really want to read. 4d
Laughterhp Ooh nice! A good looking group of books! 4d
jlhammar Very exciting! Looks like Our Wives Under the Sea doesn't come out in the U.S. until July 12 so hoping that one will be later in the camp schedule. 4d
sarahbarnes What a great list! Looking forward to this - thank you for organizing it! 📚 4d
BarbaraBB @Suet624 Sorry I forgot to tag you! @Centique You‘re very welcome to read along too and join in the discussions! 🤍 4d
BarbaraBB @jlhammar Thanks! We‘ll keep that in mind! @Megabooks has researched publication dates in both the US and the UK. We‘ll work out the best time to read them and post soon about it! 4d
Suet624 @BarbaraBB no problem. You have a lot of names to keep track of! 4d
Kdgordon88 Looking forward to camp! Thanks, ladies. @squirrelbrain @Megabooks 4d
vivastory What great selections 👏👏📚📚 4d
Ruthiella I just got the confirmation from the library that my holds for True Biz and How High We Go came in! Woohoo! 😃 4d
Soubhiville Just got home from travels so I didn‘t get in on the vote, but three of these are books I would have voted for, so I‘m excited! Picked up True Biz on my trip. 🙂 3d
Soubhiville I‘m going to do my best to read along too. Could I get on the tag list? 3d
Centique @BarbaraBB I won‘t read along with the schedule I just love watching you all reading and having a good time! I‘ll pick some to read from all your reviews 😍 3d
BarbaraBB @Soubhiville Of course you can! We‘re happy when you‘re joining whenever you can and want! Tagging @Megabooks @squirrelbrain 3d
BarbaraBB @Leniverse I hope you like the outcome of the poll! 3d
BarbaraBB @Centique That is perfect of course 🤍 3d
Leniverse @BarbaraBB I don't think I voted for any of them, but all but one are books I almost voted for, so good enough. 😆 3d
BarbaraBB @Leniverse There were so many good ones on the longlist! I am excited to discover some books I hadn‘t heard of! 3d
Well-ReadNeck What a great list!!!! 🤗🤗🤗 3d

Still enjoying and cherishing The Island of Missing Trees. Then I‘ll read the short but very intriguing Winter in Sokcho, followed by this month‘s #NYRBBookClub choice.
After that, I guess it will all be about Camp!

#BookReport 19/22

I‘ve read three completely different books again this week. From wealthy Ghana to proud Afghanistan to a permanent residence in a London hotel. Incomparable but all good!

post image

“There‘s a witch in that clock, holding it back.”

Time passes slowly in The Claremont, a hotel where elderly can live, though they are not allowed to die there. Mrs Palfrey is a widow who moves there and gets acquainted with the other permanent residents. They pass the time reminiscing and hiding their loneliness. Every once in a while we get a glimpse of the persons they once were. An honest witty read about life‘s last stage.

KarenUK This sounds lovely! And looks like a gorgeous day 💕 1w
BarbaraBB @KarenUK This is definitely a book you‘d love too! And indeed, spring is in the air 🌸 🌺 1w

squirrelbrain I love that cover, it‘s so simple, but very striking! 1w
BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain I love the cover too for those reasons! 1w
BarbaraBB @Chelsea.Poole @sarahbarnes Thank you Friends 🙏 1w
arubabookwoman The movie was very good too! This was the 1st Elizabeth Taylor book I read and I loved it. 1w
vivastory I have heard from several people this is their favorite Elizabeth Taylor. Have you read this one @merelybookish? 1w
vivastory If you're interested, I just noticed that there is a panel discussion video linked onto the NYRB site about the book feat. Michael Hofmann, Gwendoline Riley & Merve Emre
BarbaraBB @arubabookwoman I must find out where to watch the movie. I‘d love to see the atmosphere of the hotel! 1w
BarbaraBB @vivastory Thanks, I‘ll go and have a look. It‘s my favorite Taylor too I think. And definitely a book for @merelybookish And @batsy for that matter 🙂 1w
vivastory I am also curious to read some of Taylor's short stories. I have heard that at least some of them have a Roald Dahl/Shirley Jackson vibe to them 1w
BarbaraBB @vivastory Really? I can‘t imagine that vibe in her books. But you got me interested now! 1w
batsy Yes! I already have it on my TBR 😊 (And definitely one for @LeahBergen too) Great review and I really like that cover, as well! 1w
Ruthiella This book is nearly perfect I think. I love getting lost in long books but I also love a short book that says so much in so few words. 1w
LeahBergen @batsy It‘s waiting on my shelves, of course! 😆 1w
merelybookish @BarbaraBB @vivastory @batsy @LeahBergen I also have an (unread) copy. 🙃🙈 1w
charl08 Still got this one on the shelf to read. Must Do Better! 6d

BarbaraBB @BookwormM I know! And yet I can‘t control myself 🤷🏻‍♀️ 1w
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen I hope to read it very soon! 1w
BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain Yes, @TrishB is to blame for that one 😀 1w
Megabooks I‘m excited for the Kawakami but holding off until we know whether it‘s in #CampLitsy. I loved how to be as well!! 1w
Megabooks And I‘ve thought about getting Faraz Ali several times. 👍🏻👍🏻 1w
Cinfhen Me too @squirrelbrain that one from @TrishB caught my eye last week 👀 1w
squirrelbrain I‘ve requested the Kawakami on #NetGalley @Megabooks , just in case! Just my luck it‘ll be one of those I don‘t get granted. 🤷‍♀️ 1w
LMJenkins What's #Booker22? 1w
BarbaraBB @Megabooks I know you and @cinfhen loved it so my expectations are sky high 😂. I read a great review of Faraz in a local newspaper and then @BookwormM recommended it as well. 1w
BarbaraBB @LMJenkins BookerPrize. I didn‘t use the right hashtag I think. 1w
Graywacke Great stack. You should try that little one in the middle. 🙂 1w

squirrelbrain Exciting! But it‘s so difficult to choose just 6 from this fabulous list! 1w
rsteve388 Selected! I have been trying to read a lot more sci-fi this year, so I picked a few of those. 1w
Chelsea.Poole Squee! 🏕 Thank you guys so much for organizing! @Megabooks @BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain 1w
sarahbarnes I love this so much! Thank you for organizing it! ☀️ 1w
Cinfhen This is SOOOOO AWESOME!!! I can‘t wait to get my #CampLitsy t-shirt 😁well done @squirrelbrain @Megabooks 1w
Addison_Reads What a great idea! Thank you guys for putting this together. 1w
vivastory To be honest, the Litsy TOB is way more exciting than the real TOB. So many wonderful selections that I'm only voting for a few of my own nominees! Thank you campers! 1w
Ruthiella Fantastic! Thank you @BarbaraBB, @squirrelbrain and @Megabooks for making it happen! 😃 (edited) 1w
Ruthiella @vivastory Yup! My six choices will now also be influenced by all the intriguing titles proposed last week by others! 1w
BarbaraBB @Ruthiella @vivastory I love that I will vote for books I hadn‘t heard of before last week! 1w
BarbaraBB @Chelsea.Poole @sarahbarnes @Cinfhen @Addison_Reads You‘re very welcome. We were on a flow creating the thing 😀 1w
batsy This is brilliant! Thank you @BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain @Megabooks for putting this together. I'm off to vote 🥳 1w
erzascarletbookgasm How does this work?? 1w
merelybookish This is so exciting! I figured there was no way the official TOB could live up to our picks. So I'm thrilled we get to do one of our own! Thank you for organizing! @Megabooks @squirrelbrain @BarbaraBB 1w
merelybookish @erzascarletbookgasm Click on the 2nd link in Barbara's post. It gives a good breakdown of how the tournament works. I hope that helps! Would be great if you joined. 🙂 1w
Cathythoughts I‘m very interested in joining in , and I‘m also wondering @erzascarletbookgasm how this works ? Well done you three littens 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 you are onto something very exciting here 💫 1w
Megabooks @Cathythoughts the Google document linked above has a good description of how things will work. Basically, we‘re choosing six books to read together and discuss in June, July, and August (2 books per month) and we‘ll vote on a winner each month and then a grand winner from among the three monthly winners. 👍🏻👍🏻 @erzascarletbookgasm 😀 (edited) 1w
Cathythoughts @Megabooks Thanks Meg , I‘ll get cracking and have a look at the list and pick my six. Well done you guys 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 1w
MicheleinPhilly I'm looking forward to this and am really, really, REALLY going to try to play. I will force myself to prioritize it if I have to, damn it! 😁 1w
squirrelbrain @Cathythoughts @erzascarletbookgasm Tournament of Books is a kind of knockout competition for books run every year. Barbara runs a Litsy version alongside to see if we vote the same. It was my first year joining in this year and it was fun! There is also a mini CampToB in the summer with just 6 books. This year we decided to nominate our own books for Camp then we‘ll read and vote for our winner. 1w
BkClubCare Fyi - book that I suggested is not actually released until Aug 2nd…. (edited) 1w
Chelsea.Poole @cinfhen what's this I read about a Camp Litsy t-shirt?? Because NEED 😻 1w
Cathythoughts @squirrelbrain Thanks Helen 👍🏻♥️ I‘ve sent mine in 👍🏻 1w
squirrelbrain Oops @BkClubCare - we thought we‘d taken out all of the books published late-June and onwards. I must have missed that one. We‘ll cross that bridge if it gets voted for! 1w
Cinfhen I‘m just joking @Chelsea.Poole but I feel just like The Rooster we should have merch too😉 1w
Chelsea.Poole @cinfhen I thought so...BUT how cool would that be! 😎 1w
BkClubCare @squirrelbrain - sounds good. I made a note on my sug‘d six, also… 1w
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen @Chelsea.Poole How cool that would be 😍! 1w
BarbaraBB @Cathythoughts How great you are joining! @erzascarletbookgasm I hope you will too, if you still have questions, let us know! 1w
BarbaraBB @MicheleinPhilly We‘re counting on you to at least vote! One step at a time 😉😘 (edited) 1w
BarbaraBB @Liz_M Check this out - instead of your co-workers 😉😂 1w
vivastory @MicheleinPhilly Yes, please join what you can! I'm not planning on reading all 6 books on schedule but some of my favorites of this year were books that were in the most recent tob (edited) 1w
BarbaraBB @vivastory @MicheleinPhilly I don‘t think I will read all of them either. I just love to have so many options! 1w
MicheleinPhilly @BarbaraBB @vivastory I‘ve voted but I saved a copy of the spreadsheet because there are so many interesting sounding books! 1w
LMJenkins Just voted! Excited for this. 1w
vivastory @MicheleinPhilly @BarbaraBB That's a great idea! I'm going to do the same! 📚📚 1w
BarbaraBB @LMJenkins Happy you‘re joining, thanks for voting! 1w
Hooked_on_books I want to vote but I can‘t! The form is requiring me to sign in but I don‘t know my password and can‘t recover it because it wants to text a phone number I no longer have! Grrrrrr! Edit: I was able to fix it and vote! Thank goodness! 🥳 (edited) 1w
Suet624 My brain isn‘t working - lyme and last month of job - so I‘d prefer that you all decide the books to read and I‘ll join in after they‘ve been selected. 1w
Desha Voted! This sounds like so much fun! ♥️📚 1w
erzascarletbookgasm Thanks Margot, Meg, Helen 👍👍👍 Sounds exciting! Will take a look. @merelybookish @Megabooks @squirrelbrain 1w
Megabooks @Suet624 I‘m feeling you there unfortunately! I‘m having terrible long haul Covid brain fog today. Glad you have you on board, and I hope the brain fog clears! 💜 1w
Megabooks @Desha fantastic! We‘ll have fun this summer for sure! 😀🏕 1w
BarbaraBB @Hooked_on_books Thank goodness! A password shouldn‘t be necessary to fill out the form. Glad you fixed it! 1w
Suet624 @Megabooks I‘m so sorry to hear about your brain fog. I didn‘t realize you were experiencing long haul Covid. That makes me sad. 💕 1w
BarbaraBB @Suet624 I‘m sorry your Lyme is bothering you again. I noticed you‘ve been quiet lonely. Take care 🤍, we‘ll choose some nice books for you! 1w
BarbaraBB @Desha Very happy you are joining us! 1w
Suet624 @BarbaraBB thanks Barbara. The Lyme symptoms pop up randomly and I have to slow way down. Also an upcoming transition regarding work is impacting me more than I thought it would. I‘m feeling a bit wobbly about it. It‘ll all be fine eventually, I‘m sure. 1w
Suet624 @BarbaraBB it‘s also 2:30 am and my sleep pattern is a mess. 😩 1w
Megabooks @Suet624 I‘m so sorry you have Lyme. That‘s a very hard condition to have long term. I‘ve had a different chronic illness for 25 years, but the exhaustion has been way worse since Covid. The brain fog is new, and I‘m not enjoying it. And sleep issues are a real problem. I napped from 8-11 PM and now it‘s almost 2 and I‘m up!! Hope you can fall asleep soon. 💜💜 (edited) 1w
Suet624 @Megabooks brain fog is no joke. Gosh, this stuff is tough. As far as sleeping, I seem to have a two hour window from 2 AM to 4 AM where I‘m awake. it‘s not bad if I don‘t have to go to work but on work days I have to be up at six. Anywho! I guess we‘ll just be sleepless sisters! 1w
4thhouseontheleft Done! So excited to see the results! So many great nominations, it took me a while to browse the list and make my choices since I didn't want to just pick the 6 I recommended! 1w
BarbaraBB @4thhouseontheleft I didn‘t just vote for mine either. So many good ones! Thanks for voting! 1w
Desha @Megabooks @BarbaraBB thanks so much guys! 1w
Teresereading So many great choices, I voted for some I know of, and also some unknowns with great/intriguing titles 1w
cariashley SO excited!! Thanks so much for organizing!! 1w
BarbaraBB @Teresereading I ended up too voting for books I hadn‘t heard of until then! 1w
BarbaraBB @cariashley Glad you‘re in again! 1w
Sparklemn @barbarabb I missed out on the voting but I'd love to participate in the group! 4d
BarbaraBB @Sparklemn You are very welcome to participate! And you can even still vote. It is still Monday on the west coast of the US! 4d
Megabooks @Sparklemn I have reopened the voting. There was some confusion among the organizers about when the poll would close, and I closed it early. If you‘re still awake, we‘ll leave it open until 1 AM on the west coast US, so about another two hours. I hope you will join us reading even if you aren‘t able to vote! Once again, I apologize for the confusion! 4d
BarbaraBB @Megabooks sorry Meg, my fault! Emailed you! Xxx 4d
Megabooks @BarbaraBB thanks friend. Got it. I‘m glad straighten things out. Going to try to sleep for the 4th time!! 🙄 4d
cariashley I missed voting too, am hectic with my first international work trip since covid started, but I trust the hive mind here and can‘t wait to see the results! 3d

Andrea Busfield, an English writer, fell in love with #Afghanistan and made it her home. This book is a declaration of love to a country that is so much more than war and drugs.
I felt really uplifted by the story of the young Fawad, his friends and family, their beautiful country and their optimism, despite the ever present political unrest.⬇️

BarbaraBB It‘s almost surreal to read this book now, when once again the people of Afghanistan are suffering under fundamentalism and neglect of human rights 💔 1w

This book showed a completely other side of Africa. The side of the wealthy in modern day #Ghana. Arranged marriages are still possible though. Afi is supposed to be lucky to marry Eli, a rich and kind man. Their love story is quite unrealistic and not very well worked out but it was easy and fun to read. A light pick.

The Storygraph shows some interesting about my reading during the first four months of the year. What does it say about me that I mostly read emotional, reflective, challenging and dark books?! Literary though 😉 and not necessarily my daily mood!

It‘s a fun app!

I like the app as well!
Amiable I hear you —StoryGraph says I lean mostly towards emotional, informative, sad and dark! 2w

…. Continuing my last post: these books I suggested for #CampToB22. Please share your 6 #MostAnticipatedBooks!

I had to include one thriller although I know that‘s not really ToB‘ish 🤷🏻‍♀️😉

To reach the real ToB people, here is the form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfM6VOvtv_dy9-7v6GFk0ccZFrPnJG-vcnWHVaJ...

Cinfhen I really want to read 2w
Cinfhen And I think this would be perfect for discussion 2w

squirrelbrain I‘m still thinking about mine….! 🤔 2w
squirrelbrain I agree @Cinfhen - I too want to read The Swimmers. 2w
Ruthiella Great list! I‘d gladly read these six for Summer Camp. 👍 2w
BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain @Ruthiella You‘ll come up with books I‘m sure I‘d want to read! 2w
Hooked_on_books I‘ve read The School for Good Mothers along with the bottom three and I think they‘d all be good choices for CampTOB! 2w
rockpools I‘m just going to work my way through this hashtag stacking things. So many I haven‘t heard of! 2w
BarbaraBB @Hooked_on_books I probably was inspired by your reviews! 2w
Chelsea.Poole Great list! I hadn‘t heard of the Tessa Hadley. And yes to this one — excited about it this summer. (edited) 2w
merelybookish Great picks! I already have The Swimmers & Free Love stacked. 👍 Now to add more! 2w
BkClubCare 👏👏👏 2w
thebluestocking Lovely list! I want to read several of these too (well, now all of them because I trust your taste)! 💙 2w
sarahbarnes The Swimmers is on my list as well! And I am going to be adding some of these to my TBR now, too! 2w
Adventures-of-a-French-Reader I've read Don't Cry For Me, it's an excellent book. Hope you'll enjoy it! 2w
BarbaraBB @Chelsea.Poole That‘s one that @Cinfhen has been raving about and that can lead to a great discussion. I really want to read it! 2w
BarbaraBB @thebluestocking I hope they are as good as I expect 😀 2w
BarbaraBB @Adventures-of-a-French-Reader Thanks! It sounds so good! 2w
Sophronisba This looks like a great list! I would love to talk about Free Love with the commentariat. 2w
Megabooks I think The Seimmers has a good chance but I‘m excited for the Emezi too! 2w

What do you think of the new way of selecting books for #CampToB22?

I see why the overexposure of some books makes them want to try a different approach but I‘m not sure if we readers can come up with the right books. I mean that part of the fun is that #ToB always comes up with obscure books I‘d never heard of. I am a bit scared that we‘ll be reading bestsellers this summer. What do you think?
And will you send in suggestions?

Ruthiella Hmmm. Can they be published ANY year? Or just in 2022? 2w
Cinfhen I think it‘s a cool idea but definitely will probably feature bigger named authors 😔I‘m curious though! And I‘m trying to come up with some suggestions- are you?? 2w
BarbaraBB @Ruthiella I assume 2022 but am not sure! 2w
See All 45 Comments
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen Me too! Can‘t wait to see your suggestions! Will you post them? 2w
Cinfhen Ohhh, I will!!! That‘s a fun idea!!!! 2w
Cinfhen I accidentally deleted the email 🫣can you please send me the link ( if it‘s possible) 2w
BarbaraBB @Ruthiella Yes they should be published in 2022, I just read! 2w
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen I‘ll post mine too, that‘s fun indeed! 2w
Cinfhen Thanks SO MUCH xxx 2w
Hooked_on_books Yeah, I don‘t love their plan. I agree about them finding obscure or small press books I may not otherwise find. I think they should instead make a rule that, say, the top 4 finishers in CampTOB are automatically ineligible for inclusion in TOB. Then they could still pick unusual stuff and not end up with the same winner of both or overexposure. 2w
BarbaraBB @Hooked_on_books I thought in the past only the winner of Camp was included in the real tournament. That worked well I thought. But you read so many books: what 6 books would you suggest for this year‘s camp? 2w
Hooked_on_books Oh gosh, I‘m bad at the “most anticipated” thing. I‘ll have to think about it a bit! 2w
Hooked_on_books Ok, I‘ve thought of two: Either/Or by Elif Batuman and Unlikely Animals by Annie Hartnett. 2w
Hooked_on_books Also, Woman of Light by Kali Fajardo-Anastine and Nuclear Family by Joseph Han. (Maybe I‘m better at this than I thought.) 2w
BarbaraBB @Hooked_on_books Of course you are! I need to check them out immediately 😀🤍 2w
merelybookish I guess a lot of TOB fans were disappointed about Klara winning both tourneys! I will be interested to see how this goes. I have my reservations but don't care much if they muck about with Camp TOB as long as they don't change the official tournament. 🙂 2w
ImperfectCJ Totally new to Camp ToB, so no particular opinion about the change. I'm not great at picking (or even being aware of) books out during the current year. I rely a lot on stumbling across reviews and don't keep up well with new releases (there are only two 2022 books on my TBR right now), so I'm most likely just going to sit back and watch what other people pick. :-) 2w
Soubhiville I‘m really just a lurker on all your ToB discussions, but always love seeing all of your reviews. I feel like I might jump in on it? And I‘m adding a bunch of all of your suggestions to my TBR seeing your posts this morning! (edited) 2w
Larkken I‘ve only recently started paying attention to ToB (by working through the 2021 bracket, lol) and I‘m loving that it‘s bringing to my attention books I hadn‘t thought of before, instead of making me choose 😂 but I‘m still happily following and stacking these books! Yay new books!! 🥰 2w
RidgewayGirl The one thing this new rule did is made me scour the “most anticipated” lists. 2w
sarahbarnes Great idea! I will be posting mine! 2w
thebluestocking I loved the year they did nonfiction for Camp, so that‘s what I recommended! It‘ll be interesting to see what they do. I‘m fine with mixing it up. I didn‘t find the “double exposure” but I didn‘t like Klara. 2w
vivastory I like this idea. I do think there is a bit of a problem with overexposure. I'm going to do some digging & see what I find. 2w
cariashley This is interesting! I like that they‘re changing it up - I was definitely one of the people peeved about Klara. And the overexposure problem is real for me personally, at least when it comes to picking a zombie so early, before I‘ve read most of the books. I‘ll put some thought into what books I‘d like to see for the summer! 2w
BkClubCare I will be looking at the suggestions offered on the almost last day of March‘s TOB; everyone offers their next anticipated TOB books. I wrote them all down but not sure where I put it (tho my added-to-gr around that time could be a guide) I am reading Devil House now because it seems something TOB-ish. I might offer it. I also want to suggest Joan is Okay. 2w
BarbaraBB @Soubhiville You are very welcome to jump in! I‘ll tag you when the summer tournament starts! And if you like to share your most anticipated reads that you hope will make it to #CampTob we‘d love that! 🤍 2w
BarbaraBB @merelybookish totally agree! Don‘t mess with the real ToB! 2w
BarbaraBB @Larkken I know what you mean. So many great books! 2w
BarbaraBB @RidgewayGirl I did too! And they are quite comparable! Do you have any favorites for the summer tournament? To me, you are definitely the expert! 2w
BarbaraBB @thebluestocking A non fiction camp? I don‘t even remember! 2w
BarbaraBB @BkClubCare oh really? That must be such an interesting list! I hope you will find and share it. In the mean time I will look out for both books you suggest! 2w
BarbaraBB @sarahbarnes @vivastory @cariashley Very curious of your most anticipated reads! 2w
Addison_Reads I'm loving everyone's posts/suggestions. This will be my first CampToB and I'm excited to see what books make it in. I'll try and see if I can come up with books I'd like to see included. 2w
BarbaraBB @Addison_Reads So many great suggestions in everyone‘s posts, you‘re right! I am looking forward to your choices if you find them! 2w
thebluestocking @BarbaraBB I just went back to find it. It was not a tournament-style thing, just a discussion. https://themorningnews.org/article/welcome-to-the-rooster-nonfiction-popup 2w
BkClubCare @thebluestocking - I really enjoyed that Nonfiction TOB! 2w
BarbaraBB Super interesting Jessica! @thebluestocking 2w
4thhouseontheleft I kind of like this idea, as long as we don‘t end up with the typical bestsellers! 2w
Readerann @BarbaraBB I will have to be a lurker for CampToB as I am focusing on my old TBR for awhile. But please keep me tagged so I can keep adding new books to replace the ones I‘m reading - thereby ensuring my TBR remains ridiculously long and unmanageable. 🤣 (edited) 2w
BarbaraBB @Readerann haha I know what you mean! Will keep tagging you! 2w
Well-ReadNeck How do we send in suggestions? Does anyone have a link? 2w
BarbaraBB @Well-ReadNeck I have posted the link above, in the comments! (edited) 2w
Well-ReadNeck @BarbaraBB OMG! yes! Thanks. Didn‘t scroll back far enough. Felt like I was missing some of the convo. Sorry! 2w
BarbaraBB @Well-ReadNeck I hope you‘ll post your suggestions too. We‘re planning to make a longlist of all suggestions and play our own #CampLitsy 😀 2w

Another lovely #Persephone. No spinster lit this time but a story that starts off as a Cinderella one (plain girl meets her prince) but ends somewhere completely different. Not my favorite but I did spend some pleasant hours with Emily Fox-Seton and Lord Walderhurst.

One of my African favourites so far for. These are the memoirs of NYT journalist Helene Cooper, who grows up in #Liberia. When the country falls apart after the coup of 1980, she and her family flee to the US. Her less privileged half sister Eunice stays in a country that for years suffers under crazy dictators who recruit child soldiers  and drug them to fight for.. well, for whatever. ⬇️⬇️

#ReadingAfrica2022 ??

BarbaraBB Cooper tries to forget about where she came from, but the Liberian girl within her needs to go back, in search of Eunice. There is so much I never knew about this country, that I have come to love from afar. I‘m in awe of its proud people, always hospitable and dressed up, even on the ruins of civilisation. 3w
Cinfhen Wow!!! This sounds WAY BETTER than the book I read for #Liberia 3w

If not for #ReadingAfrica2022 I would never have discovered this popular series about the lovely Mma Ramotswe, owner of the first ladies‘ detective agency in #Botswana. The mysteries she solves are not the point I think, the book especially shows a deep love for Africa. It‘s hard to believe a white man wrote this book yet he did an excellent job!

#WeeklyForecast 18/22

I am in the middle of two books for #ReadingAfrica2022 that I hope to finish this week. Also I want to treat myself to reading one #Persephone book a month. They really are the ultimate comfort reading. This month‘s is the tagged one.

squirrelbrain Lovely idea for a treat! 💕 3w
LeahBergen I loved this Persephone. 😊 3w
BarbaraBB @LeahBergen That is certainly good to know! 3w

Megabooks Sometimes we just need something comforting. Especially people like us who read (and usually enjoy) a lot of sad books. 💜 3w
BarbaraBB @Megabooks That is so true! It‘d be interesting to explore why we read so many sad books 🤔 3w
Megabooks I‘ve wondered that as well. I find a lot of meaning in sad books that speaks to me. Plus you know how I like to find spots of hope. I think those are the books that move me enough to bump to five stars. They feel more true to life (at least mine). 3w
Suet624 I wonder about why I read so many sad books too. Light reads are few and far between. 3w
BarbaraBB @Megabooks @Suet624 Those kind of Books are the ones that make me think most and that can stay with me. They are indeed the only ones that can be five star reads. Light reads I choose are mostly comforting, like the the Persephone‘s, or thrillers/mysteries. They hardly ever are worth 5 stars in my opinion though. Interesting! 3w

Emilia and Bruch are happily married, but their relationship is based on a lie. When they first meet, Emilia conceals something important that happened to her. At first, this doesn't seem to hinder their love and for a long time she thinks it won‘t be necessary to tell him. But over time she realizes the impossibility of doing so. Should she come clear or is it too late? Schermer allows the reader to witness the doubt and despair of Emilia.

I haven‘t been feeling well for the last few days (the flu I think) and this book was obviously not the best companion. A mix of horror and violence and SF and monsters and rats and abortions… I had a hard time finishing these short stories, especially the ones in the second half of the book. Definitely not among my favorite short story books.

Page after page of stream of consciousness without any break or paragraph… it was hard to keep up and then I didn‘t even want to any longer. I am sorry Sarah and Scott and the rest of my #NYRBBookClub squad but my mind can‘t handle it at the moment 🤷🏻‍♀️

LeahBergen I read an excerpt from this before buying it and thought it wasn‘t my sort of read either. 😬 4w
DivineDiana Stream of consciousness does not appeal to me as well. 🤷🏼‍♀️ 4w
arubabookwoman I read it several years ago and was totally lost in the beginning. Before bailing I read the intro (not sure if it was a NYRB edition), which explained what the author was doing/ehat was going on, & after that I was able to follow what I was reading. 4w
See All 10 Comments
sarahbarnes No worries at all. I will say that the style changes after the first part and for me it got easier to follow. But it was way more of a challenge to read than I expected it to be! 4w
batsy I was thinking about bailing because this is also not a good time for me to read this! Lots going on in life and super hard to focus on this style. But I'll give the suggestion by @arubabookwoman a go tonight & read the intro in the NYRB edition to see if I feel like I might soldier on 😁 4w
BarbaraBB @batsy It is very helpful indeed what @arubabookwoman suggests. Let me know what you think when you‘ve read it! (edited) 4w
batsy @BarbaraBB @arubabookwoman It's a brief translator's note in the NYRB, but yes it is quite enticing and makes me think I'll carry on for now and see where this leads... 🙂 4w
sarahbarnes I totally get it! It was a way more strenuous read than I expected it to be and I don‘t think I liked it for the most part, although parts of it were interesting. 3w
BarbaraBB @sarahbarnes I am sorry I bailed but I wasn‘t in the right mood for it 🤷🏻‍♀️ 3w
sarahbarnes Don‘t be sorry! To be honest I‘m not sure I would‘ve finished it if I didn‘t feel like I had to. 😂 3w

This is the uncomfortable read about two Mexican boys, more or less condemned to each other out of loneliness, and frustration about how life is turning out. They can‘t be more different yet they keep meeting each other. But it‘s a toxic friendship and you know from the start that no good can come from this.

Sea of Tranquility: A Novel | Emily St. John Mandel
post image

Much has been said about this book and I too loved it. Once again ESJM has created characters who feel so real and human. Their relationships and fears, whether set in the past or the future, feel extra relatable now that we ourselves have just experienced a pandemic. But how Mandel writes about it makes COVID and current times even more scary. Yet I could have read on and on about those characters - in any time or place.

BarbaraBB @Nute they are a bit related but you can absolutely read them as stand-alone novels. I would however recommend The Glass Hotel anyway! It‘s very good and some characters return in this book. 4w

It‘s the 1930s, and the Stevens family travel to the English seaside town of Bognor. For two glorious weeks they are freed from collars and stockings, from work and duties.

It is the 20th time they go there and their days pass in the same way each year. The family can afford little but what dominates is their constant enjoyment and making the most of every little ritual.

A wonderful book, a typical #Persephone. Highly recommended.

erzascarletbookgasm I‘ve got this on hold. Lovely view! 1mo

This is the beautiful, sad story of 15-year-old Kambili, set in #Nigeria. She is the daughter of a wealthy and fanatical religious man who physically and emotionally abuses his family if they don‘t live up to his Catholic standards. During a sleepover with her free-spirited aunt Kambili starts thinking of her own identity - with all consequences. Recommended!

BarbaraBB @sarahbarnes Exactly the same. I‘m not really motivated to pick it up again even though I like it too. Other books all seem more appealing! 1mo

#bookreport 15/22

I finished two books for #ReadingAfrica2022, the tagged one was longlisted for the #InternationalBookerPrize20222 and I have been reading some Dutch fiction which I hardly ever do but have been in the mood for lately.

Simona I can relate to this - I hardly ever read Slovenian authors, but this year I already have read three 🤷🏻‍♀️ 1mo
BarbaraBB @Simona That is interesting. Why would that be? I am wondering why I am suddenly reading Dutch authors 1mo
Megabooks I noticed you were suddenly reading more Dutch authors. Perhaps you want to feel your own experience (as far as language and culture) reflected more strongly right now. 🤷🏻‍♀️ also, I might find it comforting to read something familiar too. But perhaps I am projecting my own feelings. 💜 1mo

BarbaraBB @Megabooks Interesting thoughts. I mostly avoid my own language and culture because it feels a bit claustrophobic - the Netherlands are so small I often recognize the setting or feel like the mc could have been my neighbor. Reading English just keeps a distance I appreciate. I can‘t just read American novels though, that gets too American at times (no offense!) so I‘m glad for translated literature and the reading the world challenges. ⬇️ (edited) 1mo
BarbaraBB @Megabooks I like to travel (as you know!), by books as well. So I really wonder why I suddenly read Dutch while I‘ve been aching to leave the Netherlands/Amsterdam for a while after two years of Covid. You might be right about feeling my own experience, I hadn‘t thought of that! 😘 1mo
Simona @BarbaraBB I can strongly understand what you meant with claustrophobic - that is the reason why I don‘t read Slovenian authors so often. It is always more interesting to read about others misery, than about familiar depressing surroundings … and the neighbours‘ grass is always more green, isn‘t it? 😘 1mo
Megabooks Interesting. I see your point about translated literature and your love of travel and escaping your everyday. I‘d imagine a lot of Dutch novels are set in Amsterdam like NYC for American or London for British. I can relate to the claustrophobia a bit because I feel that way about Kentucky at times. I love traveling through lit as well, but more because there are a lot of places I am not likely to see. You gave me a lot to think about! 💜 1mo

Monterosso mon amour: een novelle | Ilja Leonard Pfeijffer
post image

Carmen reads a lot, but she never recognizes herself in her books. Stories are rarely about women like her. “I have experienced and accomplished little in my life yet I would like to read about it,” she tells her neighbor on the plane, flying home from Cinque Terre where she went in search of her first love. The neighbor is author Pfeijffer. He fulfills her wish. The result is this novella, written especially for the Week of Dutch Books promotion.

KarenUK This sounds lovely 💕 1mo

Ali‘s friend Kaunda doesn‘t cry when her husband dies. He had not been a good man and abused her so why should she be sad? Because her in-laws demand it, because that‘s the way things are supposed to go in rural #Namibia. Based on this main storyline, this novel explores the status of women in traditional Namibian society. A very good read. I am learning so much about Africa!

The Book of Mother: A Novel | Violaine Huisman
post image

Elsa‘s and Violaine‘s mother, Catherine is beautiful, brilliant and bipolar; she is a dancer who is determined to live life to the max. Why would she give up her right to freedom? Just because she has two kids?

After the war and the bleak fifties in France, she parties, argues, drinks and makes love throughout the sixties. Despite their mother's unpredictability, her daughters love her unconditionally.

TrishB Great pic and review👍🏻 sounds like a good read. If a man was doing this no one would bat an eye lid. 1mo
britt_brooke Perfect photo! 1mo
BarbaraBB @TrishB Exactly! You‘d almost say she lived like a man 🤣. However it‘s a French book so there‘s a lot of dark drama. It‘s in fact a heavy and sad book 🤷🏻‍♀️ (edited) 1mo

I got a rare and unique insight in #EquatorialGuinea, a country I knew nothing about, a country that never makes the news. Having said that, the story was not written well. It‘s about the coming out of a girl, being a so called “man-woman”. I appreciate the book though for learning about this small country.

I hope this book will be translated in English.

A married couple. She leaves, she has sex with another man and her husband seems so boring. Their children, reading a chat between their mother and her lover. The father, Tindering for the first time. The daughter, in love with a cute Moroccan boy. The father‘s love for his kids. The mother, irritated with the responsibilities coming with being a mother.
