Austenland
Austenland: A Novel | Shannon Hale
Jane is a young New York woman who can never seem to find the right man-perhaps because of her secret obsession with Mr. Darcy, as played by Colin Firth in the BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice. When a wealthy relative bequeaths her a trip to an English resort catering to Austen-obsessed women, however, Jane's fantasies of meeting the perfect Regency-era gentleman suddenly become more real than she ever could have imagined. Is this total immersion in a fake Austenland enough to make Jane kick the Austen obsession for good, or could all her dreams actually culminate in a Mr. Darcy of her own? In this addictive, charming and compassionate story, Shannon Hale brings out the Jane Austen obsessive in all of us.

#200PnPcovers #embroidery @CrowCAH @mabell One of my all time favourite movies is Austenland, based on the book by Shannon Hale, and there‘s a fun embroidery scene where Jennifer Coolidge‘s character complains about having to sit there for hours and sew - I always think how I‘d have loved that acceptable lady‘s work - I love to cross stitch and can do it for hours on end.

ChaoticMissAdventures This is the 3rd time today Austenland has come across my feed on 3 different platforms! It is a sign I must rewatch it. I LOVE Jennifer Coolidge in everything she does. 9mo
mabell This sounds like so much fun! Still TBR and TB-watched! 9mo

I read this forever ago (in my Pre-Litsy days) and spent the afternoon rereading this. Jane has an obsession with Jane Austen, and probably more specifically Pride and Prejudice and Mr Darcy. When she has an opportunity to vacation in a role playing Austenesque estate, of course she jumps at it!

Filled with romance, charm, and of course Austen banter, this is perfect brain candy. Originally published 2007. #19822022

An easy, simple read. Relatable for any of us Austen fans who are unabashedly in live with Darcy.

I have a hard time believing she wouldn‘t immediately like the clear “Darcy-alike” character but other than that it was really cute.

#bookspinbingo

Scochrane26 I like the book but love the movie. Def my go-to comfort movie now. 1y
Annie1215 @Scochrane26 Gonna have to check it out, I‘ve never seen it! 1y
TheAromaofBooks I'm with @Scochrane26 - I actually ended up loving the movie, which I honestly wasn't expecting. I had a couple of things that I preferred in the book (mainly about how Jane ends up at Austenland... the movie makes her kind of creepy-obsessed with Darcy haha) but couldn't believe how much I loved the way they interpreted most of the story. Of course, having JJ Feild to look at the whole time was definitely a bonus 😂 1y

I feel like I got whiplash from how often Jane's emotions changed. The story was entertaining, but I feel like it could have been done better. It didn't have enough Austen feel to it. I wasn't immersed in the story. It felt ridiculously fake, which might actually be the whole point of the book. I was expecting it to be better than it was.

The other 3 were all enjoyable reads. #Weekly/MonthlyForecast Looking forward to reading Northanger Abbey with the #PemberLittens a chapter a day this month and working on #LitsyAtoZ with 11 books to go. Super quick and super fun read. Jane is obsessed with Mr. Darcy and no boyfriend of hers has even come close to comparing. So due to an older relative that knows her secret obsession off she goes to Austenland where you can live out your Austen inspired fantasy in costume. There was a fun cast of quirky characters. Nothing groundbreaking here, just a plain fun read.

As I mentioned in my last post I needed a light frothy distraction yesterday and this checked all the boxes. An American woman is trying to overcome her Darcy obsession that is sabotaging (she believes) her current relationships by spending 3 weeks at an English resort where patrons are immersed in the time and place of Jane Austen. Humorous and fun, doesn‘t take itself too seriously. ⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 #Pemberlittens

Mehso-so

First #Pemberlittens book! This is exactly what you would expect, an easy read. There's nothing shameful in light reading and if you are just looking for entertainment this book is a pick; but in conscience I can't rate it more than a so-so... I enjoyed it and it made me laughed out loud a couple of times. It's one of those guilty pleasures that we all love (and need) from time to time.

nanuska_153 The Sheffield guy supporting Manchester United and using the metric system to talk about his height made my brain itch. It wouldn't require much research to get those details right, it's only one Google search away... 3y
bio_chem06 Do I need to have read an Austen novel to enjoy? 3y
nanuska_153 @bio_chem06 I don't think you necessarily do. There are some references to different Austen characters but you don't need to have read Austen's books to follow the plot and enjoy the romance. You should Google "Colin Firth Lake Scene" to get a glimpse of what's all the fuss about ? Part of the fun is that most of us can relate to being obsessed with BBC's Darcy, but sure you had some fandom obsession in your life that can help you understand it 3y

I absolutely cannot get over how charming this was!! ♥️ I started out reading this for the #PemberLittens group yet I finished it in one sitting!! It‘s really well done on audio and was hilarious at times. The Austen references contrasting with the real life was so much fun. ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️/5

Chrissyreadit Yes!! I loved it years ago. Last night my daughter and I watched the movie and also decided it was a charming laugh out loud two thumbs up. 3y
mollyrotondo The audio is a riot isn‘t it! I‘ve been enjoying listening to it while I work. Can‘t wait to check out the movie this weekend 3y
batsy I read it some years back and really enjoyed it, too! 3y

I‘m going to hesitantly give this a pick, because I think that if you like Jane Austen, you will find something to like about this book. It‘s pure fluff and a fast read, with some good quotes about believing good things can and should happen to you. 3.5⭐️ I can‘t wait to watch the movie because I‘ve always been a fan of Kerri Russell!!

alisiakae I felt the same way! Just finished it last night, and plan on watching the movie today 3y

Hey, #PemberLittens! @jenniferw88 shared the tweet above from author Shannon Hale, and I‘m wondering if anyone else wants to start a little early with our club. 😂

I really enjoyed Austenland, but I‘ve not seen the movie. Thinking of remedying this situation ahead of the reunion on 4/28. Anyone else?

Tagging all 84 people who have shown interest!

Also: we have 73 members in the GR group & a bunch on the slack channel. New members welcome! 😃

katy4peas Me me me me me !!!! 👋👋👋👋😍 3y

TheAromaofBooks The movie is great fun. It's one of the rare occasions that I have trouble deciding whether I like the movie or book better! 3y
LiteraryinLawrence I would love to read and/or watch this one! 3y
LiteraryinLawrence Ha, so in the last 6 minutes I located an ebook of Austenland at my library through the Libby app, borrowed it, and started reading. I had JUST finished another book so it was the perfect time to start this one! 3y
CrowCAH Wow, cool! I‘ve seen the movie; loved it! But have not read the novel, though, it‘s on the TBR. We can start early with Austenland! 3y
sprainedbrain @MicrobeMom Doesn‘t look like it‘s included in any of the streaming services I have, but can be rented for $3.99 online. 😃 3y
JenlovesJT47 Sounds good! I‘m going to read the book ASAP! 3y
Dcueto Loved this movie 3y
sprainedbrain Another option for watching: the whole movie is on Facebook and I would be willing to host a watch party (or 2 or 3) there so that all interested in different time zones could watch. 😃 (edited) 3y

JaclynW I've read the book, haven't seen the movie yet. That would be fun to watch together. I will try to make it work! How does a Facebook watch party work? 3y
mabell I haven‘t read Austenland, but I thought Midnight in Austenland looked so up my alley! I wonder if they should be read in order, and I should probably read the book before watching the movie?? 🤪 3y
sprainedbrain It looks like Midnight is a totally different main character, so I bet you could read it first. 🤔 I‘m going to read that one since I already read the first. 3y
sprainedbrain @JaclynW I made a post in the GR group about Facebook but basically, if you join a group called Jane Austen Fan Club on there, they have all sorts of Austen-related movies available for watch parties. Any member can choose their movie and click to start a watch party, and then anyone else can watch along with them. You can comment (or not) as you watch. I will put a link to the fan club on my thread in the GR group if you‘re interested. 😃 3y
mabell Ooooo I didn‘t realize it was same setting, totally different stories! I‘ll start with Midnight! 😄 3y
HOTPock3tt Omg Keri Russell from felicity is in the movie! It looks like fun 3y
HOTPock3tt I just finished the audiobook!! ♥️It was amazing and so much fun !! So glad I joined this group or I would‘ve missed out on a good one. This one completely charmed me!!! I‘m working a 12 hour shift on the movie viewing day so won‘t be around, but still wanted to be able to possibly discuss the book with the group. So glad I read it!! 🤗 (edited) 3y
sprainedbrain @HOTPock3tt We don‘t have a set day for the movie, but I hope you get a chance to watch it since you like Keri Russell. 🥰 3y
HOTPock3tt @sprainedbrain oh I though it was on the 28th? I‘ll definitely check out the movie at some point and will keep an eye on the group to see if I‘m working or not when you guys watch it!! 🤗 (edited) 3y
sprainedbrain @HOTPock3tt That‘s the day of the Twitter reunion the author is hosting. I don‘t think we‘ve settled on a group watch. 3y
kspenmoll I tried to sign up but was having trouble with submitting- can you add me to list? Let me know if I need to do anything email: kspenmoll@icloud.com 3y

Jane was going to have one last live-it-up and then quit men entirely. She‘d #play out her fantasy, have a staggering good time, and then bury it all for good. No more Darcy. No more men—period. When she got home she‘d become a perfectly normal woman, content to be single, happy with her own self. She‘d even throw the DVDs away. #QuotsyFeb20

Austenland is such a perfect piece of Austeny goodness. Jane‘s attitude about her Austen obsession is a riot, and he obsession with finding a perfect Darcy is quite similar to my Jamie Fraser obsession (*sigh). Nothing terribly deep with this one. It‘s a fluffy read meant to bring a smile to any Austen or non-Austen lover‘s face.

ChaoticMissAdventures I enjoyed it! I also liked the movie, Jennifer Coolidge is as always so funny and charming. 3y
Loric @ChaoticMissAdventures I haven‘t seen the movie so will have to check it out 🤗 3y

Really enjoyed this book but forgot to take a photo. Lovely change of pace from my other angst fantasy books, and unpredictable too. Been trying to make my way through Shannon Hale‘s extensive back list, since being so impressed with the Books of Bayern series. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Jane loves Mr Darcy (Colin Firth), so when she is given the opportunity to visit Austenland and become immersed in Austen, she jumps at the chance. Love complicates things when she starts to develop feelings for other the men of Austenland. Austenland is an amusement park of sorts for Janeites, a place to live and breathe her world. This is fun, quirky, filled with humor, and probably every Janeite‘s dream. #BizarreLoveTriangle #RedRoseSeptember
