My #doublespin for May was Take My Hand, which I read for Fabled's book club discussion with the author coming up this week. This is a heartbreaking read that sucked me right in. I thought this was well done - I gave it 4 stars! @thearomaofbooks

It also is for #Booked2022 about a royal. I listened to it in one day on April 1. I hated the narrator, and the story felt like Hunger Games meets The Bachelor. It was just ok for me, and I will not be reading more in the series.

This was my March #bookspin, which I DNFed this week. The audio was really funny and it was cute, but I realized after about 25% that I don't love adventure stories. It was a read for #middlegrademarch, and I would still recommend it for others, but it was not for me. @thearomaofbooks

I finished this one yesterday for #AuthorAMonth #LiteraryCrew #Booked2022 @Librarybelle @Soubhiville

I did like it, and I learned some things, but I felt like it was too long. The end was strange to me. I was also reading another by the same author at the same time - not recommended. I listened on audio and liked the narrator, but I sometimes had trouble telling the characters apart with her voices.

Librarybelle I haven‘t had a chance to start yet but plan to this weekend! 2mo
Soubhiville I‘m about to pick this one up too. 2mo
megnews I‘m listening on audio and 3 minutes in to the second chapter I had to say “wait this is a different character” and go back to understand. She doesn‘t narrate in a different voice and so far it makes it difficult to follow. Will have to pay close attention and hope it gets better. 2mo
Kangaj1 @megnews I had to keep checking my phone as the chapter title tells the POV. However, if the characters are having a conversation, it gets really confusing. 2mo

Sea of Tranquility: A Novel | Emily St. John Mandel
post image
Pickpick

Thank you to Netgalley and Knopf for the opportunity to read and review this title prior to publication. I am stunned after reading this book, and I am having trouble with words to explain how amazing of a reading experience I just had. Mandel follows up her novels Station Eleven and The Glass Hotel with another one with loose connections to those worlds she made. It's a novel about art, the pandemic, metaphysics, and love.

Kangaj1 Edwin moves suddenly to Canada in 1912 and while walking through a forest encounters the notes of a violin echoing in an airship terminal. In 2020 a composer is sharing a creepy video with an audience - of his sister walking through that same forest and hearing the same sound. In 2203 Olive is on tour on Earth for one of her previous novels being optioned for film, and a portion of the novel includes a strange scene with a vision of violin music 3mo
Kangaj1 and trees and airships. In present day, 2401, Gaspery and his sister are researching whether or not they were all living in a simulation. Each section moves to a different time period, and the pacing and writing are exquisite. As soon as I finished the novel, I wanted to start over again and understand how she wove it all together so well! This is absolutely a 5 star read for me and may be my favorite of the year. 3mo
Kangaj1 I DNFed The Glass Hotel, and now I want to go pick it back up to see the connections between these novels. Outstanding. 3mo

Thanks to Doubleday and Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review this title prior to publication. Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Gamus is the story of Elizabeth Zott, a no-nonsense chemist in 1950s and 1960s California. She says exactly what she thinks, and she bumps up against cultural views of gender and societal roles. She falls in love with her co-worker, Calvin Evans.

Kangaj1 Fast forward, and Elizabeth is the reluctant host of a cooking TV show called “Supper at Six“ where she explains the chemistry involved with cooking. She is also mom to Mad Zott, or Madeline, a child prodigy, and a dog named Six-Thirty.

I laughed out loud so much, my jaw dropped open at other parts, and I hugged this book at the end! I loved reading from multiple points of view, especially Six-Thirty's.
3mo
Kangaj1 I loved that Elizabeth uses chemistry to reveal how societal rules are off-kilter. This book is inspiring, heartwarming, witty, and irreverent. All of the main and supporting characters have depth to them. This book is being compared to Where'd You Go, Bernadette and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and I completely support this. I read the last half of this book in one sitting, and this will most likely be one of my favorites of the year! 3mo

Thanks to Netgalley and Vintage for the opportunity to read and review this book prior to publication. Claudia Lin is a sharp, witty Chinese American mystery lover working for an online dating detective agency. When one of her clients fails to show up for their meeting, Claudia begins to uncover layers that look a bit more like murder than suicide. I adored Claudia in all of her talents and her flaws,

Kangaj1 and I loved that the side characters were also well-developed. It's as if Harriet the Spy were grown up, lesbian, Chinese, and immersed in technology, online dating, and privacy, And this is not only a literary mystery, it also delves into family drama and how we represent ourselves to each other, whether in person or online. 4mo
Kangaj1 The setting in NYC is immersive, with the food, the different neighborhoods, and Claudia's commute via bike. I loved the commentary on self-discovery and the mystery genre. I generally do not like locked room mysteries, but this did not feel like a “typical“ one. Looking forward to many more works from this debut author! 4mo
