Betrayal | Harold Pinter

Last NYC post - not *exactly* book-related, but they do publish scripts. 😉 The reason I took my 17yo daughter was to see Tom Hiddleston in Betrayal. He is her favorite actor & has been her top celebrity crush for years. Unfortunately, they didn't sign after the show, but it was still an amazing time - stunning performances by all three actors. She graduates in 213 days & we are soaking in every minute. 😍

Another required stop on our NYC trip was a branch of the NYPL. We were touring NYU, & when I realized that the Jefferson Market branch was close, I was so excited to visit manager Frank Collerius, co-host of one of my favorite podcasts, The Librarian Is In. I had a bit of a fangirl moment & he was so touched that I stopped by. He was quite busy, so I didn't ask for a picture, but the building is gorgeous!

When I told Katie that she could pick out a book from the Strand (in addition to the aforementioned script of Betrayal), she chose this doorstop. ☺ She recently watched & loved the newer movies (she's a huge Bill Hader fan), and is now making her way through the book. I love this shot from our hotel, The Mansfield, in NYC. #raisingreaders

Littens! I have been out of pocket due to midterms followed by a whirlwind 48 hour trip to NYC with my older daughter. My first time to NYC, so of course I had to visit The Strand! Purchases = the script for Betrayal, the play we saw on our trip, for Katie and a Strand tote for me.

Amiable Love the Strand! How fun for you! 23h
PirateJenny Oh! You saw Hiddleston! 😍 22h
mom2bugnbee @PirateJenny I'm about to post about that, even though it's not technically books. 😉 That was the reason we went - he is my older daughter's fave actor, she's a senior, you only live once. 😍 He, his co-stars, & the play was stunning. I'll never forget it! 22h
PirateJenny @mom2bugnbee A friend and I are considering going (our office is ten blocks from the theater). We should get off our behinds and get tickets! I'm so gla the two of you went! 8h

I'm still wrapping my head around this book. While the connection between the three stories was not difficult to figure out (this is billed as YA, after all), it didn't feel forced. This book was written so beautifully. I can see why both of my teenage girls recommended it so highly.

I don't give many 5⭐ reviews, but I've had three this month! On a roll!

Holy cow.

I can't remember the last time that I tore through pages so quickly that I had to go back becauwe I jumped over sections of text. This was even better than Dark Matter - my pulse & breathing literally quickened with theirs as the difficulties unfolded. I imagine that it does help if your mind has a scientific bend (🙋🏻‍♀️), but I think that it's understandable to all. Definitely will be reading his back list!

mom2bugnbee I don't know which libraries use it & which don't, but I'm in middle TN (as is @britt_brooke, who has also used this). I haven't figured out the algorithm yet, but every so often, I'm given the opportunity to borrow something on my hold list early, but for only 7 days rather than the normal 21. If you don't finish in 7 days, you simply retake your place in the regular line. It's a wonderful surprise when it happens! 1mo

Okay. I'm ready to try Stephen King.

I'm 47 and I've never read SK because I've always been a scardey-cat and I've always thought of him as the ultimate horror author. Then I learned that I'd watched movie adaptations that I didn't know were his (Shawshank, Green Mile, Stand By Me). I saw Carrie the Musical and it was excellent, so I actually watched Carrie & Christine last year (through fingers, sometimes) and "enjoyed" them. (cont in comments)

mom2bugnbee And I've learned that he's so much more than a slasher horror author. So... What do I start with? I'm still a scardey-cat, kinda. But, boy, would I love to explore Derry. But should I? Additional note: long books don't intimidate. 1mo
JackOBotts I‘m not super well-read on SK, but The Shining May be good. 1mo
Samary I love King. Carrie still holds up but there are so many books and stories that aren‘t scary. He‘s got a huge variety in his body of work. 1mo
See All 16 Comments
JulietBooks After I watched Pet Cemetery, I knew that SK's books were going to be too scary for me. 1mo
MaureenMc The only Stephen King book I have read to date is The Eyes of the Dragon, which is a fantasy novel. I really enjoyed it and would recommend it. (I also dislike horror.) 1mo
mom2bugnbee @Samary What are some of your fave not-so-scary King, please? IT really intrigues me - is it that bad? Clowns don't scare me. I may try Carrie. 1mo
mom2bugnbee @JulietBooks Yeah, NOT reading OR watching that one! 1mo
Megabooks Yeah I don‘t think Pet Cemetery would be good for a vet 🤣🤣 I‘ve never read SK either, but I‘m very tempted by 1mo
JulietBooks My husband owns a SK book and I kind of want to read it now. Lol. 1mo
mom2bugnbee @megabooks Totally forgot that was SK! I read that one! 🤦🏻‍♀️ 1mo
Megabooks Lol! Whoops! Was it good? 1mo
mom2bugnbee @megabooks I really liked it. And not scary - I'd put it in the thriller genre rather than horror. Thus proving my point about SK - I've learned that he is multifaceted. 1mo
8little_paws oh, read 11/22/63! I read it years ago and don't remember a ton of details but I don't recall it being *super scary*. It's more a time travel story and there is a love story involved. I also really dug Sleeping Beauties and ripped right through it in like a weekend. 1mo
BookwormAHN You could also try 1mo
ginganinja I LOVE The Shining and 11/22/63. The Shining is pretty scary, but 11/22/63 isn't scary at all in the traditional sense. More sci-fi/fantasy. I couldn't get through IT because of the very outdated racist language, but what I did read wasn't super scary to me. 1mo
Samary @mom2bugnbee The Stand and 11/22/63! I‘ve read IT. It‘s creepy but I love horror so to me it‘s not as scary as some people think. 1mo

Oh. My. Word.

I will be recommending this book to everyone with a love of the English language. I can't wrap my head around how he wrote this.

Reminded me a bit of Flowers for Algernon. Saying how is a spoiler, but those who have read both will understand.

So glad that Anne Bogel pushed this to the top of my TBR. It may be one of my all-time favorites.

And I think I can finally declare my reading slump over. What a great day! 😁

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐/⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

mcctrish I loved this book. I‘m only sad I didn‘t buy it 1mo
Aseleener Would this be appropriate to read to kids? Mine are 9 & 11. Sounds like something my 11 yr old would enjoy. 1mo
mom2bugnbee @Aseleener Completely appropriate re: subject matter & content. The only caveat is that the vocabulary level is extremely high. I was constantly stopping to look up the definition of a word. The main issue in the plot is that letters keep "disappearing" from the alphabet (spoilers to say more), so as the book progresses, the characters/author have to get much more creative with their word choice, thus using lesser known words. 1mo

Wow.

Until this book, I'd been reading this series strictly for the mystery. And there's plenty of that here. But what I didn't expect was all of the hidden meanings & discussions that could come from this book. Very rarely do I want to re-read a book immediately after finishing it to catch all of the nuances. That's exactly what I want to do now.
