Oooooh, this one is really good!

A psychological crime thriller that was not at all what I expected. Exciting through the end and very hard to put down. Great writing, and this is really a perfect book for #screamathon reading. With some excellent witchy stuff that elevated it to something really special. 🔮

The Whispered Tales of Graves Grove | Kelsey Keating, Elise Manion, J.S. Bailey, Matthew Howe, Mackenzie Flohr
post image
Pickpick

A collection of 20+ short stories by 17 different authors, all centered around the 150-year history of the creepy little town of Graves Grove, British Columbia, where SO MANY children have gone missing over the years... a decent, if somewhat slow, #screamathon read for me. Mainly horror with some comedy.

Combining both weeks, as just realized I never did last week.

I‘ve had to switch back to lunchtime walks because it‘s too dark before and after work, and work has been crazy (in a good way) as I‘ve been busy screening, interviewing, and checking references to fill a new position. Home has been crazy with senior pictures, volleyball, and homecoming.

My tracking has not been good! 😬

#bfcr4

Meaw_catlady Hope things start to settle down for you soon! But glad to hear things are good! The fact that you‘re still even attempting to track during all this busyness is a win!! 😘 1d

Well. That was a thing I read.

This story could have been really awesome. An expedition to Antarctica that uncovers all sorts of scariness: giant alien creatures and their giant abandoned ancient ruins, a creepy blob thing that might have ended them, 6 ft tall eyeless albino penguins? Sounds fascinating! Unfortunately, our wordy, annoying narrator chooses to focus on the landscape, weather, and general tedium. 🙄

The second of McMahon‘s books that I‘ve read, and considering I‘ve enjoyed both, I think I need to find more from her.

Just the right amount of creepiness, 3 generations, multiple POVs a mystery that kept me guessing, and an ending that surprised me. I absolutely loved the main setting—an old abandoned roadside motel (with its own little Tower of London) and the family home up the hill from it...hello Psycho vibes.😱

The Shadow of the Wind is one of my very favorite books, and this little piece of gothic horror is almost as beautifully written and poetic. 🖤

Fantastic characters, gorgeous language, some really scary parts, and truly touching rumination on life and death. Combining mystery, love story, and science fiction seamlessly. I devoured this book in one day, and I‘m certain I will read it again.

A perfect #screamathon read!

I finished one of my #screamathonswap gifts from @4thhouseontheleft 😃

Again I‘m not sure this book should be classified as horror—it‘s a sci-fi psychological thriller where not much really happens in the way of plot, but tension does build nicely throughout. Unfortunately, I figured out the ending way too early, so it lost something there. Still, it was a short read that kept my attention.

This was supposed to be a #screamathon book, but despite being shelved as horror on GR, it‘s definitely not a scary book. It is, however, really well-written urban fantasy/paranormal that I enjoyed a lot. Very original and thought-provoking. First book finished for #screamathon... I get why this is considered horror (it‘s is horribly, terribly gross, graphic and disturbing), but I wouldn‘t say the book is scary. If it weren‘t for #Popsugar2019, I never would have picked this #LitRPG, but I liked it!

Jason is a bullied, lonely teenager in the not-too-distant future whose favorite escape is video games. We follow him into a brand new, intuitive virtual reality game controlled by an AI. The game is fascinating, the story is fast-paced, if at times a little predictable, and Jason is a likable character. I may even continue the series. 😯

This is a pick for the witty banter, the fun story, Rainbow‘s wonderful writing, and of course all of the characters I love.

BUT, I am a teensy bit disappointed by the fact that this book feels like filler between Carry On and whatever is coming next (hopefully soon)... and by the angsty situation with Simon and Baz. That felt unnecessary and too different from their characters in the first book.

Still, a quick enjoyable read. ❤️

Birthday: A Novel | Meredith Russo

Pickpick

Love the format: we check in on lifelong best friends Morgan and Eric once per year on their shared birthday from age 13 to 18. It‘s heartbreaking and heartwarming, beautifully written YA that is not cringey, it‘s #lgbtq #ownvoices, and it‘s awesome.❤️

I recommend everyone read this important book, but if you can, listen to it! Not only is the audiobook well done, there is a great interview/discussion with the author at the end.

Zelma Meredith Russo? Yes, please! 3w

As is the case with any truly great series, I‘m sad that this story is over. Margaret Atwood is, of course, a gifted writer, and she took an ecological/climate crisis, human extinction dystopian story and elevated it to something really special. Sad, funny, heartwarming and terrifying all at once, with a great cast of characters and plenty of action. I love Toby, and I‘m going to miss her a lot.

The audiobooks are well done, too!

I‘ve been low-key stressing about how long my hold wait was going to be for the audiobook with my library cards—recommended it to both libraries months ago. The hardcover is preordered, and I‘ve been thinking I might have to fight my teenager for first dibs because #MomsWhoReadYAProblems. Even considering rejoining Audible which I cancelled a full 7 months ago when...

BAM!! Past me already had my back and preordered the audio. 🙏🏻

I devoured this audiobook in one day, because I could not stop listening to a great little excursion from real life: a funny, sweet, sexy romance, lots of fun characters, honest politicians, a female president and mixed race first kids, people in the White House that aren‘t horrible. 😳😂

Such a hopeful, lovely book.😍

I read this book specifically because my #booksister Kenya loved it so much. Thanks, friend! ❤️

4thhouseontheleft So excited! Ok, funny story, I'm the weirdo that is allergic to cats but has two as pets. 😸I take allergy shots, because I'd rather go for shots every month than give up my fur babies. 😁 4w
sprainedbrain @4thhouseontheleft oh heavens... so my little man‘s familiarity with your wrapped gifts will be ok?? 😬 4w
cherinium @4thhouseontheleft I don't think that makes you a weirdo. I work in the veterinary field, and I'd say that probably 40-50% of my colleagues have some level of allergies to cats or dogs. I even know a zoo vet that still works closely with giraffe despite discovering she is allergic to them. 🤪 4w
4thhouseontheleft @sprainedbrain absolutely okay! @cherinium The vet that sees our pets is allergic to cats and dogs. We‘ve commiserated together about allergy shots. 😁 4w

The Testaments: A Novel | Margaret Atwood
post image
Pickpick

I was a little worried going in to this book, as I haven‘t yet watched the show. How silly of me to doubt Margaret Atwood. This book was perfect: it‘s not a continuation of Offred‘s tale, but we get three new narratives (Aunt Lydia is especially great), a bit more of the history of Gilead, and a view of it from the outside. Fast-paced, well-written, terrifying, heartbreaking, and inspiring.

The audiobook is awesome, too. Great cast!❤️

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

HOTPock3tt Oh! I was curious at first, now I‘m REALLY intrigued!!! 😃 I‘ve never seen the tv show cause I don‘t really watch tv... but I might just have to go pick up the first book 🤔 edit: I borrowed the first book for free on Prime reading back in June... guess it‘s time to get started! 🤣 (edited) 1mo
EmilyM I'm really enjoying it so far! 1mo
KatieDid927 I haven‘t watched the show yet either! I want to read this first. 1mo

sprainedbrain @HOTPock3tt it‘s hard to ‘enjoy‘ The Handmaid‘s Tale, but it‘s such a great book. I hope you like it! I‘m very impressed with The Testaments. The only tv I seem to watch is my baseball team... but I‘ve heard great things about the show so someday I will get around to it! (edited) 1mo
sprainedbrain @KatieDid927 I read some reviews that sort of suggested readers needed to see the show to appreciate this book. That was definitely not the case! 😃 (edited) 1mo
KatieDid927 @sprainedbrain I say pffft to such reviews. The show is an adaptation. Atwood is the original creator and her deciding to expand on her story in print has nothing to do with the show, imo. (I mostly watch my baseball team too.) 1mo
sprainedbrain @KatieDid927 Agree completely! 1mo
HOTPock3tt @sprainedbrain the only tv shows I usually end up watching are tv adaptations of books I‘ve read 🤔😂 “A discovery of witches” “The Rook” etc. So I‘m sure if I love this book I will get around to the tv show eventually🤔but I definitely want to read the book first! LOL at reviews that say we need to see a random adaptation first to appreciate an original work! 😵😶 1mo
sprainedbrain @HOTPock3tt surprising no one, I‘m the same way with tv and movie adaptations. The show has been on my list since it came out, but it‘s baseball season and the only adaption I have fit in lately was Good Omens. 😂 1mo
HOTPock3tt @sprainedbrain I‘ve seen the first episode of Good Omens, but haven‘t gotten further. How is it? Are they staying true to the book? I‘m being crushed by my stack of library books that are due very soon (also surprising no one!! 🤣) So I‘m falling even further behind with adaptations than usual... but I was quite curious about good omens 🤔 (edited) 1mo
sprainedbrain @HOTPock3tt oh I loved it! It doesn‘t stick to the book exactly, and sort of expands on it in places, but Gaiman was a showrunner, and I think it‘s still true to the book. I also love the two actors they got for leads from way back, so I thought it was perfect. 😍 1mo
