I was late finishing, but I really enjoyed this intelligent, effortless little novel. It starts out light, funny, and slightly manic and gets dark very quickly. I found Cassandra to be brilliant and self-absorbed, but still a very sympathetic character.

Great pick, Barbara!

It‘s been a while since I‘ve devoured an entire book in one day, but I couldn‘t stop listening to this.

My second by Erdrich, and I think it‘s safe to say I‘m a fan. Very well-written, powerful coming-of-age story of a Native American boy trying to deal with the horrible rape of his mom. This story is devastating, but also touching, funny, and beautiful, and it packs a major punch.

My #indigenousauthor book for #Booked2019 ✔️

I struggled with this book at times... the writing was uneven in parts, and it‘s uncomfortable to feel like the author of a memoir may be an unreliable narrator. Still, the story was absolutely fascinating and it was a fast read. Westover‘s personal journey was equal parts inspiring and infuriating.

Loved the audiobook narrator, and this was definitely worth the long hold wait with the library. 😃

HKGirl I'm reading this for a book club I'm part of. So far the members of my book club who have read it have absolutely loved it...but I'm going in with mixed feelings. I think I might end up sharing your opinion. 3d
marleed I tend to read memoirs like this with my James Frey glasses on because I took the whole thing about A Million Little Pieces oddly personal. But I did google her interviews after I read and I was impressed with her interviews so now I give her credence to her version of her story. 3d

No spoilers, and I‘m not signing any petitions or anything...

But if the show truly went the way Martin had planned the books to go, I‘m not sure I‘m still interested in waiting.

🤷🏻‍♀️

hermyknee Emilia Clarke on Game of Thrones finale's shock twist: 'I stand by Daenerys' : https://ew.com/tv/2019/05/19/game-thrones-finale-interview-emilia-clarke/ 1w
Traci1 I agree with you. The only thing is I feel like Martin might be able to work his way round to the ending where it makes more sense and people don't completely go against character to get the story there. There was so much rushing and time jumping - at one point I asked my husband "where the hell are these people and why is Bran there?... and Edmure?!?! And omg is that the kid who wanted to throw everyone through the moon door? Wth is going on?" 1w
sprainedbrain @hermyknee @Traci1 It wasn‘t even the way Daenerys ended up that upset me the most... I can see the foreshadowing, and I can maybe accept that. I‘m so angry about Jaime. Annoyed about what happened with Jon. I‘m flabbergasted by the ending. This whole season was so ridiculously rushed. Maybe I could continue to wait for a freaking book and Martin could get me there. I feel like I‘ve invested 20 years to be totally let down. 😡 (edited) 1w
See All 9 Comments
monogamist_reader I still hope the last two books will be better... 7d
Stacy_31 @Traci1 Okay so that WAS the moon door kid? Because I did a ton of head-scratching on that one! And how did Edmure get there so fast? Who decided these were the people to choose? How did they find out what Jon did if Drogon took off with the body? The whole thing felt rushed and out of context. I hated this season so much. 🙄🙄 7d
krismlars I was unsure about reading the final two books (IF they‘re ever published), but the HBO writers have forced my decision. Even if the HBO plot is what Martin intends for the books, I have to believe he‘ll do it better. 7d
Traci1 @Stacy_31 yeah it was him. I guess those were the heads of each of the big houses that were left standing. Idk. It was bizarre especially with no explanation. 7d
LibrarianRyan the thing is, HBO may have taken direction from Martin, but Martin may change it. He may be saving his big reveal for the books. there are two left to go, and they are not short. Plus there is so much in the books not in the show that have to be considered. It wasn't my favorite season for sure, and an ending I could have happily slept through. 6d
Stacy_31 @tracy1 don‘t worry, all of those questions weren‘t directed at you! I realize it seemed like it. Sorry about that. I figured it was the heads of the houses, but if that‘s the case, why were 3 Starks there? It just didn‘t make much sense. 💁💁 6d

Walden | Henry David Thoreau

Mehso-so

My high school AP English teacher wasn‘t a fan of Thoreau—we sort of discussed CliffsNotes and the major themes, and moved on. I‘m glad I finally read it, but it was sort of a chore.

I enjoyed the nature: the lake in the seasons, the wildlife and plants, perhaps because I grew up living simply in the country. There were some philosophical gems, but mainly I found Thoreau to be way too overly wordy and holier-than-thou. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I loved this book from start to finish.

I adore all of these characters, especially Homer and Dr. Larch. I love the story, the message, the writing style; I laughed, smiled, cried, and did not want this book to end.

It also felt very timely, at this scary point in US politics, to be reading about a good doctor delivering babies and delivering mothers. 💔

I‘m trying really hard to stay interested in my Serial read for this month, but I keep falling behind.

Can someone please confirm that Thoreau will eventually stop being a sanctimonious bore and blow my mind or something?

Mehso-so

Ok, but it‘s not really a Lestat book.

Lestat hanging out with the devil is a vehicle for Rice to go on a theological exploration of Christianity. While the ideas are interesting (I didn‘t quit, after all), the story just drug on and really did nothing at all to advance the vampire chronicles story. Then it ends on a note to suggest that everything that came before might have been falsities Memnoch fed Lestat to serve his own agenda. 🙄

Book 4 of the Vampire Chronicles is chock full of adventure, drama, and Lestat shenanigans. I continue to alternate between being completely charmed by him and wanting someone to punch him in the face, but I think that‘s to be expected. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Love Anne Rice‘s writing style. Also, I still adore poor, depressed, brooding Louis in all his emo-vamp glory, even in small doses. ❤️

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

HOTPock3tt I‘m waiting and waiting for my hold on Anne Rice‘s “the witching hour” to come thru!! 🙏 it actually has a waiting list despite being written like 30 years ago😶 (edited) 1mo

This book is hilarious and fun... and I might never have discovered it if not for my friend Angel. 🤗

Our hero (ha!), Lionel Savage, meets the devil and inadvertently misplaces his new wife, whom he comes to discover he actually loves. The story is creative and fast-paced, the humor is on point, and the characters are lively and entertaining. I especially enjoyed the footnotes by the ‘editor‘ (and Lionel‘s cousin-in-law), Hubert. 😂

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I got some really fun mail today!

We started our #LitsyGoesPostalOG books traveling around the world nearly 3 years ago, and we‘ve got about 2 years left until they come back to us... but Cal is awesome and sent these gifts to me so that they don‘t have to travel with my book anymore.

Some postcards from Barcelona from Lorna (in Scotland), a magnet from Kentucky from Ashley, and Arizona swag that I *think* is from Jodi.

Thank you all! ❤️❤️❤️

This book chronicles the life of Abeo, who lives a life of comfort and happiness in a (fictional) African country until the age of 9, when her father takes her from her bed in the middle of the night and drops her into a life of ritual slavery (unfortunately NOT fictional, even today). While the book takes a lighter approach than it could have and doesn‘t detail the horrible suffering, it still packs a hell of a punch.

sprainedbrain @Chrissyreadit It is sad, but the tone of the book is very matter-of-fact and it seems lighter than it could have been, if that makes any sense at all. Obviously the subject matter was sad, but it still wasn‘t a hard book to read. 1mo

I‘m still trucking along in my #YearOfRice and I have some thoughts on this one:

- The movie has NOTHING on this book, and very little in common with it. 🤔

- LOVE the female characters added to the story! Maharet, Jesse, Pandora... yay!

- Anne Rice and her writing are no joke. 🙌🏻

- I love me some Louis, but Lestat is the man: ‘I can‘t help being a gorgeous fiend. It‘s just the card I drew.‘

On to the next!

This book is so good! It‘s about monarch butterfly migration, climate change, and a poor, unhappy housewife on a failing Tennessee farm. It‘s gorgeously written, as I‘ve come to expect from Kingsolver... it‘s really something how she can enrapture with her imagery and storytelling while also making me think about serious issues. I absolutely adored Dellarobia and this story.

Also, I LOVE Kingsolver‘s narration of her books.❤️

Finally finished my #LMPBC round 5 #groupT.

This was definitely not an easy subject—it‘s fiction, but considering the author spent a lot of time in and out of psychiatric hospitals and came very close to being lobotomized herself, these harrowing experiences inside different facilities and struggles with mental health are very impactful. The writing is amazing: some of the descriptions are just poetic.

This turned out to be a one-day audiobook... I just could not stop. 😳

It‘s fun, romantic, sexy brain candy, not badly written, and set in lovely Paris. Oh, and it‘s narrated by Richard freaking Armitage. I‘m not sure I was prepared for him to say such deliciously naughty things, but I was not opposed to it. At all.🔥

I‘m not crazy about the actual cover on Audible (see my last post), so I fixed it above. 😂

The Vampire Lestat | Anne Rice
post image
Pickpick

Ok, so now I like Lestat a whole lot more than I did at the end of Interview with the Vampire. Some observations:

• Anne Rice is pretty freaking good.

• This story is ambitious, sprawling around a lot of the world and huge spans of time.

• These vampires have some interesting histories and legends.

• Tom Cruise really had no business playing Lestat. Seriously, wtf was up with that casting? 🙄

On to the next!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

RainyDayReading I‘m joining in again this year. Hoping I do better this year than last year 🤣 2mo
sprainedbrain @RainyDayReading are you going for a career? I‘m trying to pick. 2mo
RainyDayReading @sprainedbrain Kind of haha. I have 3 different careers I‘ve chosen but at different levels. I‘ve chosen Herbologist(3 subjects)for if the month goes awful and Magizoologist(4 subjects)for if I do okay and if I feel really ambitious, Cursebreaker(which adds an extra 4). So at worst I‘ll be a Herbologist but at best I‘ll be a Cursebreaker. It helps me figure out which books to prioritize. If that makes any sense 😅 2mo
sprainedbrain @RainyDayReading it does! Great plan. 😃 2mo
