IndoorDame Robert Barlow, aged 16, was either the 43-year old H. P. Lovecraft's lover for a summer in 1934, or just his disappointed protégé, who in his own middle years would overdose on Seconal after a student threatened to expose him for being that medical monster of the age, a homosexual. The diagnosis, the name of the disease. 21h
IndoorDame In 2019, 1 sit in my hot tub, but the freedoms of this era feel illusory. A single pill a night makes a frightening plague a kind of historical footnote. Such starlight. The backside of the century.

How sad am I that the Murderbot story arc is over! I definitely see this whole series becoming one of my major comfort reads.

rretzler I think I read somewhere that‘s she is contracted for at least 2 more Murderbot books, so something to look forward to! 5d
monalyisha Just wanted to tell you that I‘ve had your Auld Lang Spine gift sitting on my desk for weeks now. 🙈 I didn‘t send it; you didn‘t miss it. I‘m hoping to drag my procrastinating butt to the Post Office on Monday morning! 2d

#weirdwords #weirdwordswednesday @CBee

Did you guys know that this delicate, introspective poet who writes mostly about cultivating joy and gardening got his start in college basketball, thought about going the pro sports route, and wrote his 7th book entirely as an ode to Julius Erving?

CBee Wow! I had no idea ♥️ 6d

I love being in Murderbot‘s world! I was a little thrown that this one skipped back in time, so if you‘re reading the series for the first time I might change up the order and read this as the 5th installment not the 6th.

5feet.of.fury That‘s good to know! 6d
julesG Did I forget to warn you beforehand? I read books 5 and 6 in publication order, I had eARCs, and thought it odd that all of book 6 was set before book 5. According to Wells it's because she wanted to give Murderbot more backstory with Station Security. I'm not sure I believe this explanation. 6d
IndoorDame @julesG that is a little odd. Usually the kind of thing an author would do after finishing a series arc, not in the middle. But…🤷🏻‍♀️ 6d
julesG Feels a bit like money making was more important than keeping the series in order. Or, maybe it was an error they only realised too late. Or... Anyway, I think they were written in order but only published out of synch. I've re-read the series with FT before NE and it feels more natural this way. 6d

Gay did a such a good job in this volume of blending dreams and memories, and of letting his self conscious poetic voice take over just enough to build up complex layered emotions that we can recognize and experience with him, but that don‘t have simple names. His books may be titled gratitude, delight, joy, but he‘s writing about something less concrete. #doublespin @TheAromaofBooks

I‘m grateful to #AAM and #bookspin for pushing me to finally read Jane Harper. She‘s been on my radar for years, but something in her book blurbs always left me wondering if she would actually be my style. It turns out I really enjoyed her dry humor, and thought Falk and the cast of surrounding characters were compelling. I did work out the major plot points ahead of the book, which never happens for me! But I‘m interested to read book 2.

AmyG I liked Book 2. 1w

Even as someone who reads poetry every day I don‘t find Adrianne Rich‘s work easy to parse. Her pieces are dense & rich & have new layers of meaning that reveal themselves with each subsequent reading. It was important to Rich for people to understand the progression of her work so each poem she published was dated & the editors of this collection really emphasized that. I made that progression my focus, but I know I‘ll go back to this & reread.

IndoorDame @CatLass007 I‘ve been meaning to read her work for years and now I am for #aam, I love how this challenge pushes me to read new authors! 1w
CatLass007 I completely agree about reading new authors. I feel the same way about #LiteraryCrew and #SundayBuddyRead. I think my enjoyment of new authors is part of the reason I‘m now overcommitted to buddy reads. But the only one pressuring me is me. 1w
IndoorDame @CatLass007 😆 I get that! I‘m trying to cut back this year but it‘s tough cause I love them 1w
CatLass007 I‘m doing my best to check more books out of the library via Libby or to read what I already have in my Audible library or physical library. If I must buy a book, I try to at least get it from the local used book store. 1w

CatLass007 It doesn‘t always work but new things take their own sweet time to become habits. 1w
CatLass007 I have a bad habit to add every book I see to my Audible wish list. I need to start adding books to my library holds, even if I‘m only allowed 20 holds at a time. I have created a tag to remind me to check out books that interest me. 1w

BeeCurious I've been reading a historical fiction novel about a woman born into an aristocratic family during the mid-1800s, whose dearest goal is to attend veterinary school. The downside to not having a brain for numbers is I was getting super nervous about the punishing pace of this read, thinking there‘s no way I‘ll be able to keep this up all month, and it wasn‘t until I actually finished this week‘s section and actually saw the bookmark more than a third of the way through that I realized the other 4 sections were a completely manageable length 🤣🤣🤣🤦‍♀️ #sundaybuddyread

#NoPlaceLikeHolmes I don‘t think there‘s actually any rhyme or reason to which of the stories I‘ve read before. Reading Mary Oliver is always a bit like coming home. My favorite thing about this was rereading the six essays in this that were reprinted from Winter Hours. I found rereading them in a different context fascinating. They took on a very slightly different cast surrounded by the new theme of this collection, while mostly retaining their individual characters, and gave me a lot to think about.

BeeCurious A nice review! 🙂 I have a HB copy of Devotions sitting on my bookshelf and hope to start reading it in April. 3w

This did a great job of showing the ways Van Gogh and Gauguin were able to inspire, influence, learn from, teach, and compete with each other during the 9 weeks they lived together, and how it changed and informed each of their work during that period and also going forward. This interplay between artists is something I‘ve always been fascinated by, so I loved reading about this! BUT I found the writing style challenging. 👇🏼

IndoorDame It seemed at times to be narrative nonfiction, and at times to be academic writing without clear transitions between them. This made it hard for me to follow some of the more biographical sections, especially the last few chapters where he traces Vincent‘s spiral into cycles of mania and depression. I think I‘d grab another book if I wanted to read more in depth about his self mutilation and his illness. #bookspin 3w
