Okay, so I‘m not actually digging into my #AuthorAMonth selection until a bit later in June, but since I stirred up so much controversy I thought I‘d pull my copy of this off the shelf now before I caused any more trouble 😅🤣 You ladies can let me know if you agree with my assessment or if I‘m just a wuss. 🤗💙 @BarkingMadRead @dabbe @Soubhiville

Soubhiville Ha! Definitely looks vintage. Let‘s just say I wouldn‘t pick this up based on the cover alone. Hopefully what‘s inside will be good though. 🙂 3d
BarkingMadRead Omg this is amazing 🤣🤣 3d

dabbe Yowza! That's about as vintage as it gets! I'm excited to read something of hers because I've never read her before! Any you'd recommend as the starter to her works? 💙💚💙 3d
IndoorDame @BarkingMadRead @dabbe like a time machine! 😂 3d
IndoorDame @dabbe I‘d survey some of the readers in the group who know her better, I‘m just starting out with this author too. 3d
bnp LeGuin is a favorite author for me, but I'm not sure what to recommend as a starting point., Be cause it depends on what a reader likes. Fantasy: The Earthsea trilogy published in the 1970s? And then a look at how she rounds out the character of Tenar, and the role of women and dragons 20 years later? 3d
bnp Science fiction: I'm partial to The lathe of heaven, though it freaked me out a bit as a teenager. The left hand of darkness for exploration of "ambisexuality"? (Though it feels dated now, that was also a challenge for teenage me.) The dispossessed "anarchist utopia" 3d
bnp And then there's are collections of essays, and things like Searoads and Always coming home. 3d
IndoorDame @bnp what a perfect overview! Thanks! @dabbe 3d
dabbe Many thanks, @bnp! 💙💚💙 3d

@TheAromaofBooks Excellent spins!!!! My #bookspin is one of the 2 #CampLitsy books I‘d hoped to join in for (though I‘ll never get my Libby copy read in time to actually do that, so I may buy an audio version) and my #doublespin was the #Roll100 book I was most excited about reading last month but never managed to, so now I have extra motivation to go back to it.

Happy Pride Month Litsy! 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

I usually compile a fiction reading list for Pride, but I‘ve decided to get the tagged book instead this year. I have a tiny studio apartment and I‘m wondering if anyone owns photo books on kindle/tablet and if that works or if this is the kind of thing I just need to carve out space for?

Tonton Just me, but photography and art books, absolutely physical. Otherwise Kindle, though will buy book to have to hold sometimes. 4d
AmyG 🌈🏳️‍🌈 4d
arubabookwoman I have a Kindle Fire and it's a bit small for many art/photo books, although the color reproduction is great. I put the Kindle App on my iPad, and I find that most art, quilting, photography, etc books are just fine-the colors are great and size is usually good. There are sill some I want the physical books but for many the Kindle App on the iPad is great. 4d
IndoorDame @Tonton @arubabookwoman thank you both for helping me think things through! ❤️🙏 I sourced a used physical copy so I think I‘m going to spring for that this time, but I‘m excited to try out the digital option in the future with ones my library has and see if they work well on my devices. 3d

May wasn‘t much of a reading month. I did finish my #doublespin (a buddyread we‘d read half of in April), but didn‘t even manage to start my #bookspin. A Room of One‘s Own was my favorite read this month, with Devil in the White City following closely behind. Hopefully next month I‘ll manage to focus more on my reading. I‘m carrying a lot of these unread titles over to my June TBR, and leaving more blank spaces for mood reading. @TheAromaofBooks

AAE doesn‘t qualify as #weirdwords but I was thrilled to hear that The Oxford dictionary of African American English is currently being created and I wanted to share instead of my usual weekly entry in case people hadn‘t heard. I‘m so excited based on the initial entries they released to the NYT recently! I‘m sorry to say I was completely oblivious to the history of this fairly common word, so I know I have a lot to learn from this project. @CBee

CBee That‘s amazing news! And I didn‘t realize the history behind this word either, I‘ve only ever heard of the second meaning. 6d
5feet.of.fury Wow! That first definition is one I never knew & it‘s wild that it‘s used “that‘s no cakewalk” Iike a cakewalk is something easy peasy when it was yet another exploitation of an enslaved person 6d

This Hulu miniseries perfectly embodies #GirlPower by portraying these iconic women so well you actually believe you‘re watching 20 something Gloria Steinem, and by perfectly capturing the frenzied energy of the age that we could maybe do with a bit of today. Portraits | Steve McCurry
post image

#FaceOnCover #MayMontage I had a mini version of this coffee table book in the 90s, and flipped through the portraits until the binding disintegrated. Like most people at the time, I was captivated by “Afghan Girl” and her striking green eyes, but even more than the 1984 National Geographic cover shot which was used for the cover of this Phaidon collection (left) I remember the controversy surrounding the photo in the 90s.👇🏼

IndoorDame It came out McCurry didn‘t know who she was, and he went back several times to look for her. He finally found her identity in 2002 and took a second series of photos (right) that stuck with me even more strongly. 2w

I just saw the most heartfelt message about book bans from Amanda Gorman on her instagram account after her poem was banned in a Florida school district. I was feeling all the emotions I typically feel when I hear a story like this, and then I read the details of the single, parent complaint she shared that led to the ban, and now I‘m livid! How can we live somewhere where this was upheld?????

itsjustme40something The Washington Post analyzed the bans and found that 11 people were responsible for the majority of current bans....if I'm remembering correctly it's like 80something %. 2w
IndoorDame @itsjustme40something wow! Given how many bans and challenges there are right now, that‘s taking on a second job! 2w
Bookwormjillk Oprah Winfrey? What the heck? 2w
See All 13 Comments
IndoorDame @Bookwormjillk yeah…that was one of the things she said in her comment 😂😅 2w
Bookwormjillk @IndoorDame I feel like that should be an automatic dismissal of a book ban complaint. At least get the author right. 2w
Amiable I can‘t stand this anymore —how is it that such a small minority of ignorant and bigoted people are allowed to highjack the educational process for the rest of us? 2w
CoverToCoverGirl Very scary … 😲 2w
IndoorDame @Bookwormjillk SO many things about this form should be an automatic dismissal if anyone was taking it seriously. It‘s only half filled out! They must be rubber stamping every complaint they get in that district 2w
IndoorDame @Amiable it wasn‘t that long ago you had to remove your kids to private schools if you wanted to micromanage them to this extent. I wish there was some way to get us back to the (relative) safety of that setup. 2w
britt_brooke The complaint makes zero sense. 2w
dabbe Glad Amanda joined! Same case I posted on from the NYT last week; it seems to be THE case to follow re: book banning. This parent is completely INCOHERENT, and you know they have not even read the book in question. No read = NO OPINION! People in my English department (and our principal) have lost their jobs because of a 1-parent complaint over a different book. Time to start wearing my “I teach banned books“ shirt everywhere I go. #grr 2w
IndoorDame @dabbe it‘s terrible that people are losing their jobs over this issue! And I‘m sorry that includes people you know personally. I missed the Times piece, but I see why this makes an especially good poster piece, and I‘m glad Amanda is speaking out personally as well. I guess I have to hope that major media coverage, and the fundraiser her publisher is running, and your new t shirt campaign will push the needle back in a positive direction. 🤞🏼 2w
