It is grey and rainy outside, but I have just taken a nap, I don‘t have to get up off the couch for a few hours, and I have a goal to finish this book before Monday. Let the weekend begin!

readordierachel Sounds perfect! 4h

Sitting down to read an actual book for the first time this week 🙌

Moray_Reads Bits of this one worked better than other for me, but the good bits are really great 1w
Megabooks I really want this from the library! Have you finished it yet? 13h
Kalalalatja @Megabooks not yet, but I hope to finish it this weekend 🤞 13h

I‘m being generous and giving this a so-so, but I won‘t be reading more books in the series. It felt like a mash up of The Walking Dead, a Civil War romance, and every YA novel with a kick-ass heroine. All things that could be good, but it just didn‘t work for me.

My last book for the #MarchMadnessChallenge 🙌
And I‘m counting this as my #POCMCParanormal book for #Booked2019. Zombier are kinda paranormal, right?

Cinfhen It certainly works in my opinion 🧟‍♀️🧟‍♂️ 1w
BarbaraBB So how did your March Madness go? Have you discovered good books? 1w
Kalalalatja @BarbaraBB pretty good! I predicted the winner book (Woohoo!). I think I really liked about half of the books I read, while the last half was less impressive 😅 1w
See All 7 Comments
BarbaraBB Are you the overall winner then? And what was your favorite book? 1w
Kalalalatja I don‘t think I have the most points, but I think I won the title of best “coach” 😊 1w
4thhouseontheleft Definitely paranormal, this is the book I had in mind when we camp up with this prompt! 1w

My life is pretty hectic at the moment, so I‘m not reading much which leads to less posting. Luckily, all the stuff I‘m doing is pretty great. Like today, I met my new coworkers for the first time at an exciting seminar, and my bf and I just bought our very first car! 🙌🚗

The rest of my week is pretty busy as well, but I‘m hoping everything chills out a bit from next week on 🤞

Tamra That is fun busyness! 1w

I‘m giving this a pick, even though I wasn‘t really that interested in the story itself. However, I was interested in Mrs. Hawkins, her musings and reflections, her honesty and the wry, sarcastic tone of the book. I‘ll definitely read more books by Muriel Spark 🙌

BarbaraBB I don‘t know this one but I have read some Muriel Sparks that I liked a lot! 2w
EadieB I read A Driver's Seat - Here's my review:
This is a short, brilliant book which is a little over 100 pages but packs a punch. In the beginning the author tells you how the book ends yet it held my attention until the last page as I followed along to see how the author accomplishes her task. This was my first Muriel Spark book but it won't be my last. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a creepy, chilling tale of evil.

#YouNeverCanTell when it is the right time to start a book. I started this 4 months ago, read 20 pages, was bored to tears and sure I would hate it. So I put it down, and haven‘t been motivated to pick it up again. That is‘ until yesterday, where I read 120 pages in the blink of an eye, and enjoyed every second of it! Perfect example that every book has its time to be read 👌

In 1990, Ai-Ming says to Marie and her mother “please, #gimmeshelter” after fleeing the aftermath of the Tiananmen Square protest. Her stay leads Marie to discover more about her father‘s life, which has been secret so far, while at the same time showing examples of China‘s recent history.

I loved the book when I read it, but tbh, I don‘t remember much from it now.

I‘m so happy to be done with this...

It was just too much in every way - too violent, too rape-y, too confusing, too dense, too unlikeable, too long, too complicated.

The only good thing I can say about it is that it does have a gorgeous cover. That‘s it.

LeahBergen Yuck! 2w
Caroline2 Oh dear...unstacked!! 😳 2w

It feels like #WeveOnlyJustBegun with this book, because even though I‘m about a third of the way through, I have NO IDEA what‘s going on, I‘m confused and pretty sure I‘m going to end up not liking this book much. It will take so much coffee to get me through this book ☕️☕️☕️

gradcat I hope you get through it—I hate it when that happens! 😊 3w

laurenslibrary I had trouble with this one too. I stopped around 50 pages and haven't decided if I'm ever going to go back to it. 3w
Centique Your mug is gorgeous! 3w
Geeklet @LaurensLibrary Exact same thing happened to me. I‘ll try it again....eventually. 3w
Cinfhen Uh oh!!! I‘m really nervous 🤦‍♀️I‘ve been looking forward to this book for so long but I‘ve only seen meh reviews 3w
Kalalalatja @Cinfhen I hate to say this, but I‘m hating it a bit. I‘m only struggling through it for the #MarchMadnessChallenge, and because it is starting to make a teeny tiny bit of sense. But no a fan, which bums me out, because I was really excited for it 😔 3w
Kalalalatja @8little_paws @LaurensLibrary @Geeklet I‘m not against violent books (I love GRRM‘s books), but something about this is just too much. It is so graphic and it feels like violence for violence‘s sake, and not for the story. 3w
Kalalalatja @gradcat it is so disappointing! @JennyM so far, I can‘t recommend it 🤭 @Cathythoughts @erzascarletbookgasm it is a stunning cover! @Centique thank you, I painted it myself ☺️ 3w
merelybookish I couldn't finish his last book and everyone loves it, so I didn't even consider trying to read this one. 3w
laurenslibrary @Kalalalatja Yeah I thought the sex was overdone, too. Like there was constant, graphic scenes about masterbating and stuff for no reason. 3w
Centique @Kalalalatja how clever you are! 3w
Suet624 I‘m bummed because I recently bought this and Seven Killings. Neither of which seem to be easy to like. 3w
gradcat I‘m so sorry. That is really sad...do you HAVE to finish it for the challenge? 3w
Kalalalatja @gradcat not really, but I‘m way too stubborn when og comes to stuff like this. And now I‘m so far, I kinda need to see how it ends even though I‘m hate reading it all the way to the end 3w
gradcat Same here. I am really trudging through my current read...it, too, is for a challenge. I‘m almost there, though, but it seems like it has taken me a month! 3w

In Cold Blood | Truman Capote
post image

While True Crime isn‘t my thing, I can definitely see why this is a popular title. Capote makes the story real, and not just a listing of facts. However, I was a bit bored, and when listening to the audio, I fell asleep a bit 🤭

Between a pick and a so-so.

First, the full cast audio is great!
Second, I enjoyed it, but not as much as Evelyn Hugo
Third, have Taylor Jenkins Reid written books which aren‘t “fake biographies”? Maybe something new next time?

#MarchMadnessChallenge #FeaturesAMusician #Booked2019

MelissaSue81 While I did think this book was a solid “pick”.. I do not understand all the hype. Evelyn Hugo was definitely better.. and I liked the characters, but wasn‘t a huge fan of the format. 1mo
Zelma Her earlier novels aren‘t fake bios. I read one and part of another. General fiction with a focus on relationships. Didn‘t care for anything so far but am intrigued by this one. 1mo

How? HOW?!?!? How could Elizabeth Holmes carry on her lies for so long? She can definitely say “#IFoughtTheLaw for as long as she was able to. I can‘t wrap my head around the brutal, menacing ways of the Theranos company towards its employees, and I can‘t get over the fact how many high ranking, influential people Holmes got into her net, while not being able to show any results. Bonkers!

Megabooks You know, as a doctor who understands the workings of blood machines, I never believed she could do that many tests on 1-2 drops of blood. We have micro tubes to do specialized chem panels on birds with as little as 4 drops. Hell it takes 3 drops just to do a SNAP heartworm test on dogs. Fun fact: birds have nucleated red blood cells so traditional CBC machines don‘t work on them. You have to do a manual count, which is a pain! 1mo

I might be reviewing a book called “Winter”, but my living room is filled with Spring flowers and I got sunshine (aka lemon curd) on my bread, so all‘s gooooood 👌

There‘s something about Smith‘s books which makes me feel like I‘m not smart enough to get it, but I love the way Smith writes, so even if I don‘t get everything, I‘m still enjoying the reading. And that‘s how I feel about “Winter” - Clever, insightful, tough

#UnpopularOpinion time - I didn‘t like Song for Achilles at all. And this ended #MoreMehThanYay for me. I was kinda bored most of the way through, and while I liked Circe as a character, the rest of the book didn‘t do much for me. The pacing felt weird, and it felt like Miller was trying to cram to much into the book. Not for me...

Soubhiville I‘m with you. In fact, I was bored enough to bail. 1mo
4thhouseontheleft It would be a boring world if we all liked the same things! 😄 1mo
4thhouseontheleft Also, even though I loved Circe, I agree that it felt like she did cram a lot into the story. 1mo

hlgreenfield That's a shame to hear. I was looking forward to both books! 1mo
CoverToCoverGirl I loved Song of Achilles but I bailed on Circe! 1mo
Cathythoughts I swayed towards popular opinion with Song Of Achilles ( there were some good moments & quotes ) ... but looking back now ... it was ok. I have no interest in Circe ... 🤷🏻‍♀️ (edited) 1mo
Kalalalatja @TrishB @hlgreenfield I know I‘m in the minority, her books just don‘t do it for me 🤷‍♀️ @Soubhiville @CoverToCoverGirl I was reading it for a challenge, which is a good thing since I might have bailed on it otherwise. It got better the further along I got, but never great. @Cathythoughts I thought for a long time, it might have been because I read the Danish translation that I didn‘t like Song of Achilles. But apparantly not 🤷‍♀️ 1mo
Kalalalatja @4thhouseontheleft that‘s true! I love seeing all the different opinions 😄 1mo

Kalalalatja @sudi @Literary_Siren @TrishB @Reviewsbylola @Melissa_J to be fair, I get if the man is feeling the pressure. The TV series has become cannon now, so everything he writes will be compared to it, and not the other way around as normal. 🤷‍♀️ @emilyhaldi the man definitely knows how to procrastinate! 1mo

bookandcat He said recently that writing for it is going very well right now. When Sarah meets Matthew she is instantly attracted to him. But as time and their relationship move along, Matthew starts to pull back saying “I can‘t #letyouloveme”. However, Matthew still wants the convenience of having Sarah around. What follows is an exploration of the dynamics of an abusive relationship, which moved me and had me gripped all the way through.

Kalalalatja @Mdargusch @Reviewsbylola @Cinfhen @emilyhaldi it did a great job of portraying the damage and dynamic of a mentally abusive relationship, and I read it at a time when mental abuse was very discussed in the Danish media, so it gave the discussion an extra dimension for me. @TrishB you‘ll get through it in no time with your reading speed. It is tough, but really good! 1mo

South of Forgiveness | Thordis Elva, Tom Strange
post image

What Thordis Elva has done, I‘m not sure I would be able to do, if I were in her shoes, but I admire her for it. Contacting the man who raped her, trying to forgive him and eventually meeting up with him in a foreign country to get to a place of acceptance, forgiveness and understanding, are beyond what most survivors would do. But Elva did it. And wrote a book with her perpetraitor. And it is a great book.

Mdargusch I don‘t think I could ever do that. Wow. 1mo
Kalalalatja @Mdargusch me neither, but I really admire her strength. And it helps that Tom, her perpetraitor, is actually sorry and repents what he has done. His thoughts and reflections were interesting! 1mo

The House of Broken Angels | Luis Alberto Urrea
post image

I‘m so glad I found this after reading @BarbaraBB ‘s glowing review of it. I think I would have liked it better in print, so it would be easier to keep track of all the characters, but Urrea was a great audio narrator. It gave me “This is Where I Leave You”-vibes, with its focus on family relationships, the uncovering of secrets and its humour. This was darker, though, but definitely a great book!

When you are a historian trying to work while being stuck on a small island with your two small children, a husband too focused on his own work, and suffering from insomnia, then every night might feel like a #HardDaysNight. After having some weird #dreams the protagonist of this book decides she doesn‘t want to eat meat any longer. Which is kinda scandalous in South Korea, apparantly. Sorry, not book related.

My 8 weeks internship got extended so I can stay 4 months longer at my current job as a psychologist for rape victims. However, I‘m not technically employed, because it is a program through the unemployment office, which means I still have to look for other jobs, and I don‘t get paid my full wage. So the above comic describes my current mood quite well.

On the plus side, I get a ton of experience and Mondays off!! 🙌

CoffeeAndABook Oh I understand so well!!! I am also a psychologist in training to become a therapist & I remember all those un(der)paid internships so well. I wouldn‘t miss them for the world though. I learned so much and felt I was in a position to ask and ask endlessly. But wow. Your internship sounds hard! Keeping my fingers crossed that you‘ll find exactly the right longer term job soon 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼 (edited) 1mo

This book is CRAZY! I can‘t even articulate into words how f***ed up the history and present day of private prisons are. I don‘t think I would have read this book, if it wasn‘t for the #MarchMadnessChallenge, but I‘m glad I did!

Bauer did a bit of a #creep move, and got hired as a prison guard, as a way to see the reality behind private prisons. His own feelings, thoughts and reflections were my favourite part!

Cinfhen Sounds like a must read 1mo
Mdargusch This sounds like a tough read but a very important one. 1mo
Reviewsbylola This sounds fascinating. Interesting aside, I read an article that named our local prison as one of the worst in the country. My boss is an attorney and visits clients there pretty frequently. I asked him if it was true and he said absolutely. After his visits, he won‘t even wear his clothes back in the house. He takes his suit off first in case he has picked up any type of bugs, etc. 😬 (edited) 1mo

emilyhaldi So depressing 😖 but an important read 1mo
Kalalalatja @Cinfhen @Mdargusch @emilyhaldi I can‘t wrap my head around it. And hearing how Bauer actually start to “like” the power of a prison guard and what it does to him, is so interesting, but so disturbing as well. No wonder there are so many bad guards in this book. @Reviewsbylola Wow, that is pretty insane! I get that people who have commited crimes need to be punished, but that doesn‘t mean they have to live in filth and inhuman conditions 1mo
Rachel_nyc I have a hold on this now. I read the Mother Jones article that it‘s based on and was horrified. I‘m sure it will be a difficult read but I‘m still eager to get to it. 1mo
