Congrats on your milestone @MatchlessMarie 🙌

We don‘t really celebrate Halloween in Denmark, even though some stores are trying to make a thing of it. However, I‘m all for eating candy, and I don‘t care if it‘s shaped like a ghost 👻 so yeah, eating candy and reading books are my spooky plans 😅

I don‘t really know how to review this, since I‘m normally a really big fan of Tan. However, this book didn‘t put him in the best of lights. It was messy and disjointed, and while I like Tan‘s fashion tips, they felt like something I have heard a million times before. Tan‘s history, problems with racism, and the love for his husband, were interesting to listen to, but they got lost in the messiness of it all.

Blaire Interesting to hear...I really like Tan and enjoyed his interview on fresh air. Too bad the book doesn‘t hold up. 1w

Do I love Jonathan Van Ness? Yas Queen!
Is this a literary masterpiece? Nope.
Did I enjoy it? Absolutely!

I will admit, the book felt a bit rushed, and I would have loved getting to know JVN more. It felt like the “highlights” (although, not all that positive), more than an in-depth-get-to-know-me book. Which is fair, I can respect his privacy, but it left me wanting more.

I had kept my expectations relatively low for this book. I knew it wouldn‘t be the next The Handmaid‘s Tale, and it wasn‘t. It was its own thing, and I‘m okay with that. Told through three perspectives, we learn of how Gilead continued on after Offred‘s escape, and especially Aunt Lydia‘s perspective was really interesting. I loved getting more details about Gilead and its origins, and I would happily read an entire book on just that subject.

4thhouseontheleft That's exactly how I approached it, and felt about this book! 💜 2w

I don‘t know why I waited so long to read this, but I‘m so glad @Cinfhen put it into my hands . Because it was goooooood. I can‘t really believe this is a debut, but I‘m definitely up for reading more of Niffenegger‘s work. I couldn‘t put it down, and I‘m so happy I had time to immerse myself into the world of time travellers and love for the weekend ❤️

LiteraryinLititz I‘m glad you liked it! I was blown away by this one as well. In case you‘re tempted to read her next book, my two cents is that it was WEIRD. Not necessarily good weird, just weird. My sister thought so too. But everyone has different tastes! And we still talk about this book, so I‘ll give her props for a memorable story! 😋 (edited) 3w

“But I must render it all in as much detail as I can” - oh, how I wish you wouldn‘t. This was too long, with too many digressions which took me out of a story I had trouble enough following. This was a lot better than I expected! I have only read one Rushdie before, which I didn‘t love, so I had prepared myself for “meh”, but I ended closer to “yeah”.

It was weird and funny, with an abundance of current topics told through a story within a story - the opioid crisis, racism, politics, tv and film, and so much more.

It‘s a lot, I know. But unexpectedly well done. #BookerPrize2019

We got home from Vietnam late last night, and my day has been spent with doing laundry and other chores you have to do when you return from holiday. I did find some time to finish this (finally!), also. Travelling around Vietnam didn‘t leave me much time or energy to read, but as always, it was a pleasure to spend my holiday with Claire and Jamie. While the Outlander books are no way near perfect, they are entertaining and perfect beach reads, imo

Train reading on the way to the airport ✈️

For the last couple of years, I have brought an Outlander book as one of my vacation reads, and this year is no exception. I‘m excited to get my yearly Jamie Fraser fix 😍

BarbaraBB On your way to Vietnam? Have a great time and keep us posted 😘 2mo
Kalalalatja @Bookzombie @BarbaraBB thanks you two! We arrived today, and are now crashing in the hotel room because we are so tired. It has been a LONG trip with a bit too much close to going wrong, so all my energy is spent! But I‘m excited to see what Hanoi and Vietnam have to offer 🙌 2mo

Pickpick

A small pick - The story itself was interesting. But the characters felt oddly flat and without development. We learn Clive and Vernon know each other through a mutual ex lover, and while we get snippets of their pasts, it isn‘t enough to bring depth and history to the two men - like, why were they even friends? The distance and lack of backstory kept me from really getting into it, but the last 50 pages were gripping!

mydearwatson Is it weird I want to read that just because of the binding? 2mo
Henrik_Madsen McEwan always has a great idea, but sometimes it doesn`t work. I thought Amsterdam was a disappointment as Well. 2mo

Not as unputdownable as the first book, but enough to make me want to read the third book 👍

I think I waited too long to read the second book, because I had forgotten so many details from the first, that I had to look up recaps of it.

JennyM I would be the same. Can‘t remember much about book 1. Happy hols! 😊 2mo

I had my last day at work before 3 weeks vacation yesterday! I should be packing and prepping for Vietnam on Monday, but I haven‘t read in a print book for over a week, so this is how I‘m spending my first day off - home alone, tea, stack of cookies and a book that‘ll probably make me stay up too late to finish it 😅

I get why people like it. I even get why it is nominated for The Booker Prize, and I wouldn‘t be surprised if it won. Its themes are great, current and important. It had so many moments of beauty.

But, in spite of all that, I was BORED! I had to stop listening ti this driving home from work, otherwise I was at risk for falling asleep behind the wheel on the highway. 😴

TrishB Interesting counter opinion 😁 2mo
JennyM Oooo...I love it when one of my fave littens has a different view of a book! Great review - I might just hang fire in reading this x 2mo

erzascarletbookgasm I have this stacked! Interesting to see a different opinion from the majority. Now I‘m more curious to read it. 🙂 2mo
Cinfhen Great review!! Must get to this book!! After @BarbaraBB sang it‘s praises I‘ve been curious to see what this book is all about. 2mo
Kalalalatja @TrishB @JennyM @Cathythoughts @erzascarletbookgasm @Cinfhen I‘m definitely in the minority, but that‘s okay. I‘m pretty sure, it‘s me, and not the book 😅 2mo
TrishB I‘ll say this really quietly, I often find booker prize nominations boring, don‘t let anyone else know though. 2mo
BarbaraBB I can understand why it bored you. I found the children‘s elegies and the stories about Apaches boring too sometimes. But while reading I could skim them, listening you couldn‘t of course! @Cinfhen @JennyM @Cathythoughts @erzascarletbookgasm keep that in mind, if you decide to read it. Katja is definitely right! (edited) 2mo
Cathythoughts I agree @TrishB 👍🏻. But I did think Orchestra of Minorities was really good. 2mo
8little_paws Yeah this book tried to do too much imo. And the book within a book drove me crazy here. Dare I say by the end it just felt pretentious. 2mo
TrishB @Cathythoughts I have got that one ready as it was on offer 👍🏻 I usually end up getting the others on offers too. I just don‘t rush to read them. 2mo
Cathythoughts @TrishB I‘ll be interested to hear your thoughts when you get there 2mo
Cinfhen I agree @TrishB MOST of the #BookerBooks are a little pretentious but like @Cathythoughts I really enjoyed 2mo
Cinfhen I just placed a library request @BarbaraBB so I should be able to read this book fairly soon 🤞🏼I‘m thinking I might find myself in Katja‘s camp 😆 2mo
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen I think so too 😂 2mo
JamieArc I often find them boring too! But for some reason, I can‘t stay away. I‘m in the middle of this one, and it feels like the author just finished grad school and is trying to incorporate all her newly-found ideas. (Pretentious). 2mo
youneverarrived I think maybe audio wasn‘t the best way to go for this one as I felt the same, more so the latter half. The more I think about it though the more I appreciate it. I like it more looking back at it if that makes sense. 2mo
Kalalalatja @TrishB @Cathythoughts I find a lot of them boring, too, but there‘s always a few that blow me away, so I can‘t stop reading them 🤷‍♀️ @BarbaraBB @youneverarrived yeah, audio wasn‘t the best choice. I liked the boy‘s narration, but the mom‘s was too boring for my drive 👎 @8little_paws @JamieArc definitely pretentious! @Cinfhen there‘s always room in the #unpopularopinion club 😄 2mo

Litsy friends, I need your help!

I‘m going to Vietnam on Monday and I‘ll be gone until the 28th. I‘m trying to decide which books to pack, and I‘ve already decided on The Wise Man‘s Fear and An Echo in the Bone (two chunky reads). I‘m thinking I might need a third (and, possibly, a fourth) book, but I need help narrowing it down!

The books above are the unread books I own, and I need recs - which should I bring? Have you read any of them?

4thhouseontheleft The Time Traveler‘s Wife is excellent! Enjoy your trip! Vietnam is an incredible and beautiful country to visit! Especially the Mekong Delta. 2mo
merelybookish Wow! Have a great trip! I haven't read Jamaica Inn but I bet Daphne Du Maurier would make a good travel companion. 2mo
Sarah83 I listen to another Wilkie Collins book some time ago and I really enjoyed his writing. 🤩 2mo

BookishJess The Time Travelers Wife or Jamaica Inn. The Time Travelers Wife is a page turner. Jamaica Inn is slower but was still a good read. 2mo
mrp27 Have fun and safe travels! 2mo
ferskner The Woman in White is a favorite, both for its Gothic tones and its feminism. 2mo
Kalalalatja @4thhouseontheleft @merelybookish @Sarah83 @Megabooks @TheNerdyProfessor @Caroline2 @BookishJess @ferskner thanks for all your comments, you have given me something to work from 😅 @mrp27 thank you! 2mo
Avanders I‘ve heard Fledgling is amazing, and I personally was *not* a fan of The Time Traveler‘s Wife, but that‘s definitely an #unpopularopinion. 😉 Enjoy! ♥️ 2mo

Mehso-so

A bit #MoreMehThanYeah. While I did like the setting and premise of the book, it was just a bit too boring to really wow me. The characters felt flat, and some parts moved way too quickly, while others were way too slow.

I‘m counting this as my #SoldiersStory for #Booked2019, since the MC is serving out his compulsory military service for most of the book.

#BookerPrize2019

TrishB I‘m probably going to wait for an offer on this one. Curious but can definitely wait! 2mo
Cathythoughts I was going to let it go ... but #SoldiersStory is a book I need to tick 🤔 (edited) 2mo
Cinfhen I‘ve seen lots of mixed reviews 2mo

Kalalalatja @Cathythoughts it is relatively short, if that helps 🤷‍♀️ @TrishB @Cinfhen definitely a #borrownotbuy or a cheap kindle deal. It wasn‘t bad, but it wasn‘t great either 2mo
TrishB @Cathythoughts I really recommend this one for soldiers story 2mo
Cathythoughts @TrishB thanks ! I just took a screenshot of your suggestion- I‘ve never read John Boyne.. so maybe it‘s time to give him a go 👍🏻 2mo

To call this book lovely, might be a bit of a stretch, but it is still the words that pops into my head upon finishing it. Cameron Post goes through all kinds of hardships, but I could have read 500 pages more, just to get to “be” with her a bit longer. A great example of the coming of age novel done well! 👌

merelybookish Watched the movie version of this and it was quite good. 2mo
Litlady All the feels for Cameron! I was sad when it ended .. wanted more. 😢❣️ (edited) 2mo
