20/150 I wasn't sure you could fill a book with just one year and make it interesting, but the author did it. 1932 was a pivotal year for the US, as the Great Depression worsened, the country decided it had had enough of Hoover and his indifference to the plight of the common American, and chose to embrace Roosevelt's big government socialism.
FDR isn't one of my favorite presidents, but there's no denying that the economic policies ⬇️⬇️

RamsFan1963 under Hoover was only making things worse, and a radical readjustment was needed to save the country. This might sound dry and academic, but it's actually very lively and the narrator does a spot on imitation of FDR and Hoover. 4 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 9h

I finished Book 3 in the Lady Sherlock series a couple of days ago & I‘m midway through Book 4. Not going to give many details because I think half the fun of these books is not knowing much going into them. (BTW this series is definitely a read-in-order one—otherwise you‘ll get lost.) This is my favorite of the three—the story is compelling with great twists & there‘s plenty of Holmes & Ash time. I ❤️ their banter.

#ReadAway2024 #SeriesLove2024 There is a different, newer cover on the audiobook, but I like this cover so much more. This is the tenth entry in the Mrs. Murphy Mystery series. Just because the animals talk doesn‘t make this a cozy mystery. Both humans and animals cuss. But all the violence takes place “offstage” and there‘s no graphic sex.

#SundayBuddyRead #ReadAway2024 This was a lovely book and I look forward to tomorrow‘s discussion of the final section. I don‘t remember who said it was YA, but it didn‘t feel like YA to me. It feels like a tale of family and friendship. It‘s a coming of age tale. Yes, there‘s teenage angst but it feels more mature than YA. I‘m not sure if I‘m making any sense. One day during the week I read an article about the new Broadway musical The (cont)⬇️

CatLass007 Outsiders, based on the novel by S.E. Hinton. The author of the article called The Outsiders a YA novel. But it doesn‘t feel like YA anymore than West Side Story feels like YA. 19h

willaful YA can be mature and about things other than teenage angst! There's lots of wonderful coming-of-age YA. 17h

Yesterday I read Lessons in Corruption. It was unplanned but I couldn't get into anything else. I'm such a mood reader!

An interesting snapshot of life in a village on the Lincolnshire coast in 1940. The author was born in 1927, and joined the Navy at 17. Not so much a novel as a series of interconnected threads of daily life, the style of writing is as a dispassionate narrator looking in without judgement, which is a style that works well, I think, in this instance.
