Just started this- a Pride and Prejudice retelling in Australian contemporary farm country. #romantsy #australianwomenwriters

CarolynM This one sounds good. I look forward to your review. 2d
Lauredhel I actually might not have picked it up if I‘d known it was a PnP, not because I don‘t love PnP - I do! - but because it‘s an overworked idea. However Fiona Palmer always writes well and I am finding it engaging so far. 1d

Texreader I‘m going to be wondering all day now, what is “meta food”? 2w
BookwormM Isn‘t that the tiny portions of food you get in posh restaurants? 2w
Lauredhel @Texreader @BookwormM I took it to mean self-referential food. Food that is about itself (or in this case food that is about the drink and vice versa) 2w

Winter's Tale just dropped! If you have a child in your life - late picture-book to middle grade age - this book is for you (or for them). Our maybe it is just for you. It's a magical tale of a child without a family, searching for belonging. Winter is non binary and the book is sexuality-inclusive also. Put it on your Christmas list. Small press so you may need to search / order in.

Page 80 and I'm a DNF. "I am a dude with power, I am an arsehole, I misuse the power and it torments me " is just not a story I care about in 2019. I don't want to sit with him long enough to hear about his redemption.

JulietBooks You were able to let the book go!! Good for you! Life is too short, and there are too many good books to read. 😄 2w

ShyBookOwl Gorgeous! Well done. Looks like the technique must use a lot of front post stitches? Absolutely beautiful work 😍 2w
Lauredhel @ShyBookOwl yes, she's very tricksy! You do an abstract pattern of sc and BLO sc, then you work long angled stitches into some of the unworked front loops and popcorns into others, and there are dcs into skipped stitches two rows ago behind your work... (edited) 2w
Lauredhel @ShyBookOwl and there are stitch names like tr-2ba-2b-2tog : but after a while you get into her head and it all makes sense! 2w
robinb Gorgeous colors and pattern! ❤️ 2w
ShyBookOwl @Lauredhel oh wow! That sounds like a really fun challenge! When I was first learning, I followed a YouTube channel with a 365 days of granny squares playlist, and after just over 100, I had learned and mastered so many techniques. I love a good square challenge lol 2w

JacqMac That is so pretty! 2w
Lauredhel @ShyBookOwl that's awesome! When I was first learning, and I LOL to look back on it, after doing a bit of plain stitches-in-rows I decided to branch out and try a little mandala. So I picked up Sophie's Garden and then couldn't stop! I'm cuddled under my king size Sophie right now. It was quite the crash course. (edited) 2w

Pickpick

This was a quick, straightforward middle grade read. A biracial Hindu girl is pushed toward being a Bollywood dancer by her mother, but after being selected for a specialist Catholic sports school she discovers a love of footy. The racism she encounters was perhaps not challenged enough IMO, especially in a book for very young readers (the MC is 12). But overall not a bad read.

Having finished #readharder2019 and #aussiesrule2019, I move on toward finishing #readingwomen2019. Here is my challenge so far. Any recs for books in Appalachia, Lambda winners, books from 2018 Reading Women shortlist? Prefer SF, YA, romance, maybe mystery /thriller.

Lindy You might enjoy this Lambda winner: 1mo
Butterfinger Congratulations on your finished challenges. I should know some titles for the Appalachia prompt. I'm thinking Kingsolver wrote one that we had to read in college (History of Appalachia course), but it was 20 years ago. 1mo
Lindy PS. Ignore the book description when you link to The Gilda Stories. They aren‘t personal essays. Well, maybe they are, if the person writing them is an African American vampire who has lived for centuries. 1mo
See All 11 Comments
Scochrane26 For Appalachia, you could count The Animators- it‘s partly set in the area. Or kingsolver—animal, vegetable, miracle. George Ella Lyon writes poetry and shorter books, I like With a hammer for a heart. I might think of others in a few min. 1mo
Scochrane26 I knew I was forgetting an important one—Kim Michele Richardson wrote The Book woman of Troublesome Creek. She has a few others, but I think this is her best one. And a nonfiction one I like is What we‘re getting wrong about Appalachia by Elizabeth Catte (?). (edited) 1mo
Butterfinger Denise Giardini was the other one we read for my Appalachia course. 1mo
Laughterhp I‘m trying to read this one for Lambda winner 1mo

I did it! My #aussiesrule2019 challenge is complete! @Sue Recced: many of them, but esp the Bouchani, Amelia Westlake, Maralinga, Blakwork, A Single Stone, You Must Be Layla. AoC count : I think ten?

Not for me: Utopian man, Australian Heist, All That I Am, Boy Swallows Universe. Only critique of the challenge : too many categories forcing a Literary read. Would prefer more open/imagination-encouraging prompts. But that's my genre bias!

RealBooks4ever Congratulations! 🎉💜 1mo

My “meh“-ness is probably not the book's fault. Just yet another confirmation that most Literary Genre books are not for me. Progressive white saviour dude in Melbourne around Federation lives life, does some cool things, has tragic stuff happen to him, and fails to have any plot threads pull together in a satisfying way. The Book Arcade was cool, and in excellent news, this was the last book for my @aussiesrule2019 challenge!

White Lies | Witi Ihimaera
post image

I got up to the Maori-author prompt in my #aussiesrule2019 challenge, but bounced off The Bone People. So on impulse I picked up White Lies, which is Ihimaera's rewriting of his earlier story Medicine Woman. It's a deeply striking story of a Maori healer. Multiple women are in the position of having to make terrible choices thanks to society's racism. Parts are awful, but there's a hopeful ending.

This is an ambitious book, with its structure both strength and weakness. 3 threads weave - White‘s memoir, her research on Maud (an Australian deaf woman from the past), and (d)Deaf history. The memoir part also wove back and forth throughout her own life messily and sometimes confusingly. But it was also amazing. Her personal stories of how exhausting “passing” is, and other issues of ableism, were well written and striking. >>

Lauredhel White also writes vividly of her depression and isolation, particularly throughout her (mainstreamed) childhood and her time in London. White's book shows us how far we have come, and how far we have yet to go. I particularly recommend this to nondisabled readers, to start to give you a sense of how hard some of us are paddling beneath the surface to pander to your ableist expectations. 2mo
Lauredhel Note: I am not deaf or Deaf, though I know a bit of the language and history. I do have a disability that can be unperceived by some people if I'm not using my wheelchair at the time. 2mo
