Don Quixote | Miguel de Cervantes
post image

A true classic, really well-written, laugh-out-loud funny at times, and absurd throughout. I especially loved the way Cervantes made commentary on himself and his plagiarist.

Still, not gonna lie, I struggled to get through the book. It‘s too long and repetitive, and it felt like a slog to get to the good stuff.

But I finished! And thus I shall embark upon a pastoral life. Or just start another book. 😃

Simon Vance is one of my favorite narrators and he‘s fabulous on this recording on Don Quixote.

That said, when he reads for Sancho, he sounds a LOT like Noel Fielding as Tony Harrison.

So, while Sancho is really nothing like Tony (he knows nothing of the crunch), after about 30 hours, I am starting to picture Sancho like this. Only on an ass.

RealBooks4ever I LOVE TONY HARRISON!!! 💜💜💜 “This is an outrage!” 2d
Andrew65 Love Simon Vance‘s narration, one of my favourites. 2d

The moon is gorgeous tonight! Enjoy the last full moon of the decade. Thank you for sharing this, @Meaw_catlady ❤️

I‘m releasing the negativity, both about myself and things I can‘t control, to make room for all the changes and beginnings that will be coming my way in the new year and decade. I‘m going to try to make more time for myself.❤️

Confession: I‘ve never paid much attention to Don Quixote, and assumed it was some epic, stuffy, serious classic. It‘s on the #1001books list so I decided to read it anyway.

Imagine my surprise to find that, while it is epic, it‘s not the least bit stuffy. I‘m laughing a whole lot at the exploits of the knight of the rueful countenance and Sancho and his ass.

Am I doing this wrong, or is it supposed to be absurd and hilarious?

RachelO Hmm. You *almost* make me want to try it! 5d
Currey Yes, it IS supposed to be ridiculous and funny, at the time it was written and today. Like you, I was delightfully surprised. I read it last year. 5d
Chili @sprainedbrain I loved it. The old coot made me laugh my a$$ off (edited) 5d
Daisey So glad this is your response. I keeping thinking I need to attempt it, but I haven‘t yet. 5d

I don‘t know who I thought I was kidding when I said I would only do 3 challenges in 2020. 🙄😂

The illustrious @BarbaraTheBibliophage came up with this fun bingo card for memoirs and mysteries that doesn‘t look overly complicated, and I think I can find books on my tbr to fit them all. I‘m in!

World Without End | Ken Follett

With 21 hours to spare before the library wanted it back, I finished at 1 am this morning. 😂

Despite it being such a time investment, I was sort of sad when it ended. Definitely not too much of a good thing.

My full review is on my blog: http://sprainedbrain.blog/2019/12/08/world-without-end-by-ken-follett-actually-d...

Libby might be doubting my ability to finish this monstrosity of an audiobook in time, but I‘m down to *only* 21 hours (from the original 46) and my mama didn‘t raise a quitter.

This book is a trip. Really well-written dystopian set in the Northern California wilderness in a not-so-distant future. Some unlikely stuff happens, and some seriously weird stuff happens, and this book needs pretty much all the trigger warnings. But it‘s so good!

Pride and Prejudice | Jane Austen

Is anyone else joining in for Drunk Austen‘s #25days of Pride and Prejudice? We are binging the 1995 miniseries this year, 1 episode per day. So of course that‘s 4 trips through the series, and on day 25 our hostesses are throwing down and watching all 6. I‘m thinking I will watch the 2005 movie on Christmas instead because I FREAKING LOVE IT.

Anyway, today was day 4, aka wet Darcy day. 😍

See drunkausten.com for even more A+ content. 🙌🏻

The second book in the Villains series did not disappoint.

Lots of new EOs and lots more drama, but some of my favorite parts were still the backstories of Eli and Victor. Sort of like a cross between the tv show Heroes and a mob drama, with touches of Batman movies circa 1990… with the added bonus of awesomely strong, flawed female characters and a serious emotional punch. Darn near unputdownable, and I can‘t wait for the next book.

jmtrivera I greatly enjoyed this one! An awesome sequel! 2w
HOTPock3tt I REALLY enjoyed her Shades of Magic series and was curious about this one too 🤔 7d

I realize this book and the movie based on it were popular, but I went in knowing almost nothing about it. Despite being a very difficult, gritty, horrifying epistolary filled with extremely unlikable characters, it‘s so well written and completely absorbing that I had to do book/audio combo. I suspected the ending all along, but still found myself in a mind-blown ‘holy shit‘ state having finished it. 🤯

This book was not at all what I expected, but wowza, it is a good one.

Really great writing about an unlikely couple set against 1980s NYC. This book is gritty and graphic, and it deals with way more than just a romance.

Let the record show that it only took me 2 years and 4 months to read this BOTM selection. 😂

Karen, this book will be on the way to you tomorrow. I can‘t wait to hear what the group thinks.

I have finished my second Collins novel, and am once again surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Considered to be the first detective novel, it‘s a well-written Victorian era story that never got boring and has some really excellent characters. Gabriel Betteredge, despite his flaws, is fantastic whether he‘s narrating or not. Funny, smart, obsessed with Robinson Crusoe, he‘s basically the butler and carries this book with his detective fever.⬇️⬇️

sprainedbrain I mean, look at this: ‘We had our breakfasts-whatever happens in a house, robbery or murder, it doesn't matter, you must have your breakfast.‘ Betteredge was endlessly entertaining and I was riveted by this story.

KimHM Soooo . . . the butler can‘t have done it? 😂📚💚📚💙📚❤️ 2w

Hello, ladies of #LMPBC group L.

I‘m about halfway done with this book and having a little bit of a freak-out. It‘s way racier than I expected and I‘m not sure I should send it. I don‘t mind it at all and I‘m going to keep reading, but I‘ve never sent anything with so much sexy-times for a postal book club.

Should I send something else? 😬😬😬

Chili 😮 I‘m intrigued? 3w
thebluestocking I‘m usually not offended by sexy times at all, but I think you should whatever you makes you the most comfortable. 💙 3w
suvata Of course, it‘s completely up to you but if you are not comfortable sending it along then there wouldn‘t be any problem changing the book at this late date. You would just have to read the new one really quickly. LOL 3w

On one hand, the story is meandering almost to the point of being boring, with long, pointless and absurd conversations. On the other, it‘s humorous, affecting, and so rewarding to read. It‘s like a surreal, winding dream to follow Ryder around this town for three days. He has no idea what‘s going on, and neither did I, but my goodness did I have fun getting there (nowhere).

I don‘t think anyone writes like Ishiguro.

A quiet, mysterious bookstore that is open all the time yet has few customers, and a secret society dedicated to solving an ancient bookish mystery? Sounds 👌🏻.

Although definitely a light read, it ended up being far more techy than I expected, the characters seemed mostly one-dimensional, and the last half of the book seemed all over the place plot-wise. It really shouldn‘t have taken 13 days for me to read this, but here we are.

Zelma I had a similar reaction. Liked the first half but lost my enthusiasm as it got so tech-focused. 3w

People of Litsy, readers, and fellow Ishiguro fans, I‘m 21% done with this book, and I have a question:

Can anyone tell me what in the actual €%#* is happening here?

As near as I can tell, our odd narrator has no clue what‘s going on, and is bouncing from one absurd conversation to another weird interaction. Am I doing this wrong?

I mean, it‘s entertaining, but I kind of hope Simon Vance starts giving me helpful annotations or something. 🤪

SW-T It‘s been a bit, but I think it was about unreliable memories and what we keep, what‘s distorted, and what‘s what we choose to create. Skimmed a lot so I might be wrong.... Usually like his stuff, but this one was hard to pursue. 3w

I really thought I would love this book, and now I‘m just disappointed that I invested so much time in it.

Really beautiful writing. I loved the first third or so... then it went off the rails, started to redeem itself, and finally fell flat. I don‘t mind verbosity, I like historical fiction with magic and romance, and I love a good, sprawling story. This book has those elements, but they did not come together in any meaningful way. 😕

BarbaraBB I‘ve been thinking the same, this will be a good way to get rid of some #1001books! Thanks for joining 💕 1mo
Librarybelle Yay! Thanks for joining us! And, definitely a perfect way to read some of the #1001books ! 1mo
Liz_M I'm working on my spreadsheet so I can have ALL the 1001-possibilities listed. 😁🤗 1mo
sprainedbrain @Liz_M Haha! I‘m working on my list right now, too... I‘m finding quite a few 1001 books to fit countries, but finding copies of a few is going to be difficult! 🤪 1mo
ValerieAndBooks This is something I need to do with my my list too — seeing if I can knock out some #1001books at the same time! 3w

I think I might be agnostopagan and belong to the same church as Zachary.🖤

I am loving this book!

Also, moonrise was no joke tonight. 😍

Daisey I watched the moon come up here as well, and it was beautiful tonight! 1mo
WorldsOkayestStepMom Beautiful quote! 1mo
Reggie I‘m barely on pg45 of this one but it‘s like a love letter to storytelling and stories. Nice quote. 1mo

sprainedbrain @HOTPock3tt I just started Book 5. 😂😂😂 1mo
HOTPock3tt @sprainedbrain That WAS really sad!! 😥 I was hoping she would stay with him, I didn‘t even realize she was the moon until that statement😪I‘m at the end of book 3 🤣 and so far I‘m LOVING the Simon and Elenor story even more than the main story!!! So curious to hear what happens with them 🙃🤗 (edited) 1mo
HOTPock3tt Dorian said “strange isn‘t it? To love a book... when the words on the page feel so precious that they feel like part of your own history.. because they ARE.” reminds me of what we were discussing last night about the Outlander series 🤗❤️ @sprainedbrain (edited) 1mo
sprainedbrain @HOTPock3tt YES! I just love all of this so much... Simon and Eleanor, Zachary and Dorian, the Keeper and Mirabel, the heart and the starless sea and all of the little stories and the way they are all coming together. ❤️ 1mo
HOTPock3tt YES!! ♥️I also love Zachary and Dorian as a couple! 😃I‘m kind of shocked to find out that the stories are all related! I thought of them as a collection of fairy tales... @sprainedbrain 1mo

I struggle to read non-fiction. I‘ve always thought I might enjoy this book, but kept avoiding it anyway because not fiction. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Thanks to #readingwomenchallenge for the ‘featuring a woman in science‘ prompt... I LOVED this book!

The science was fascinating (I love the way she talks about trees!) and Hope Jahren‘s stories of her life were even more so. Such a smart, accomplished woman with an honest and compelling story.

cont‘d ⬇️

sprainedbrain I really enjoyed her sense of humor, her relationship with Bill, her motherhood anecdotes, and all of the literary references.

I listened to the audiobook: I do love a memoir read by the author, and this was no exception, but wow... it seemed even slower paced than most books. I had to speed it up to 2x (1.75 is my normal speed these days). 😬

Crazeedi I absolutely adored this book! I gave it to my daughter to read! I agree with you!❤ 1mo
TheBookKeepers Same Im not a big non fiction reader, but I loved this one!!! 1mo

jillrhudy A really good memoir 👍🏻 1mo
CaroPi I prefer non fiction in audio. But has this one in my TBR for ages 1mo
UwannaPublishme I loved this book! 🙌🏻 I was even inspired to plant a tree after I read it. 🌲 1mo
sprainedbrain @UwannaPublishme that part brought tears to my eyes! We are past planting season for this year, but I‘m planning to help some of my giant maple‘s babies survive next year! (edited) 1mo

We‘re almost to the Frost Moon, and it‘s definitely frosty in my part of the world. Blessings to the wonderful @Meaw_catlady for letting me help a little with this month‘s #moonreflections.

1. A warm shower followed by a hot cup of cocoa or tea, incense or candles, a snuggly blanket and a good book.

I got this book 3 years ago in a LitCube box... so I‘m right on schedule for reading it. 😂

Whimsical and creative, with lovely language and fun characters. A little Victorian gothic, a bit of Nancy Drew mystery, and a whole lot of wit made it a quick, light read. But at the end of the day, this is a children‘s book, and I haven‘t really been into kids books since I was about 10 years old, so...

vivastory 😂😂 1mo
Cyberkitty I read this book and it gave me serious Lemony Snicket vibes 1mo
sprainedbrain @Cyberkitty I think my girls might have liked it when they were younger (they were Lemony Snicket fans). I‘m going to see if my 8-year-old son can take a break from reading and writing comic books to give it a shot. 😂 1mo

This book has been on my shelf for years, but I just turned off the light and the dang thing is glowing in the dark.

A quick scan of Litsy and I see this is not new information, but damn it, it was news to me!

Megabooks 😁⭐️ 1mo
PaperbackPirate The same thing happened to me when I read mine! How was a glow in the dark cover kept secret from me?! 1mo
Eyelit Lol, same! Didn‘t know it glowed until I had it about a year or so and found out it glowed by accident 🤣 1mo

BarbaraBB It‘s the same and felt appropriate somehow with 1mo
sprainedbrain @BarbaraBB having just read the description, I think I will check out Sourdough... not just for the glow-in-the-dark cover. 😂 1mo
sprainedbrain @PaperbackPirate @Eyelit @Megabooks It seems pretty appropriate for the title, I guess, but what a surprise. 😂 1mo

Winter Garden | Kristin Hannah
post image

The last half of this book saved it for me. I was bored with the first part and couldn‘t really stand Meredith. The story of the Siege of Leningrad was what I came for, and truly the best part.

Kristin Hannah‘s books always have a bit of the unbelievable to them, but the lovely writing and storytelling make up for it. She managed, once again, to make me cry, and the ending, though rather fantastical, was sweet and satisfying.

sprainedbrain Also, this book made me think often of one of my favorites... and that‘s never a bad thing. 😍 1mo
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled I‘ve read two of her books and had the same kind of assessment. They‘re a little too long and a bit unbelievable at the end, but still enjoyable and glad I read them. I‘ll still read more of her stuff. This one sounds right up my alley 1mo
sprainedbrain @ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Which ones have you read? I LOVED The Nightingale and really liked The Great Alone and Night Road. 😃 1mo

I love Austen. I loved choose-your-own-adventure books as a kid. I did not like this book.

I found myself always choosing to do what Elizabeth did in P&P. Because I want to marry Mr. Darcy in the same way she did. Duh. After I finished, I realized I should have just reread P&P, or watched the movie.

So, I went back and tried some other paths, which I didn‘t like because I WANT TO MARRY DARCY.

Gave up on the silly scoring pretty early.😂

EliNeedsMoreShelves I really wanted to love this as an experience. I ended up just being annoyed that I had to make so many choices to get Mr Darcy. 😂 1mo
emtobiasz I just got this from the library. I opened it to find that I needed to keep score, and considered returning it immediately. Seeing your review, I think I‘m going to give in to that impulse. 😬 1mo

Choke: A Novel | Chuck Palahniuk
post image

Chapter 1 of this book warns you not to read it because it‘s going to piss you off and only get worse from there. Not sure what it says about me, but I liked it anyway. 😂

It‘s about a sex addict (maybe?) who gets money from strangers by pretending to choke in public places. It‘s also about his horrible mother and truly terrible childhood. It takes all the sexiness out of sex. It‘s graphic, dark, foul, unrelenting, and freaking hilarious.

sprainedbrain Reading this book felt sort of like listening to one of those rambling, partially incoherent drunken college party conversations. Only it made sense and had a definite outline, if not really a purpose. The author‘s note and the discussion with the author at the end are awesome, and I always like to listen to authors read their own stuff. 1mo
sprainedbrain My first Palahniuk, but I‘m sure not my last. Also a #1001books selection (had to check my notes on that one lol) and this was my #BookAboutAddiction for #Booked2019. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Now, can anyone share their ideas on what exactly is wrong with me that I enjoy this sort of book? 😬🤣
(edited) 1mo

Meaw_catlady Interesting ! I‘m intrigued 1mo
Mynameisacolour Chuck P. Definitely is not for the faint of heart! Haunted is another pretty twisted one and I loved Rant! I started reading this one a couple years ago and had to put it down 😅 1mo
Cinfhen Chuck P is odd for sure but he can write!!! Have you read this one @britt_brooke ??? 1mo
britt_brooke @Cinfhen Yes, but it was just okay. He‘s super hit or miss for me. I loved Fight Club (as you know), hated Diary, hated Adjustment Day, and liked Invisible Monsters. 1mo
Reggie Honestly it‘s hard to talk about this book to people without sounding crazy because yes I love what the whole different announcements mean but my favorite part is about the rape fantasy scene. Not because it‘s about a rape fantasy but just because we can want something so much only to ruin something spontaneous by micromanaging it. I laughed so hard. Try Invisible Monsters or Haunted by him next. 1mo
sprainedbrain @Reggie oh that‘s a great observation. I think that‘s what was so funny about the whole book. Victor is irreverent about every societal norm, but so meticulous in his planning of his ‘choking‘ scheme. I think my favorite parts where his taking responsibility for all of the things the hospital women were remembering and his unchosen different identities there. And the airplane Kama Sutra. 😆 I have Haunted on my shelf! (edited) 1mo
sprainedbrain @Mynameisacolour I have Haunted! 1mo
BarbaraTheBibliophage Good job! I‘ve never read any of his books. Sounds like an intense project. 1mo

I finished catching up with my feed for the last couple of days. I actually read the posts from the people I follow, and I have learned some things.

Please accept my apologies, as I may have been annoying people and Litsy-ing all wrong since May 2016. Sorry for all of the non-book posts, swapping, linking to my blog in some of my reviews, not posting or commenting enough, being a Halloween freak, tagging books wrong, being boring, etc.🤪

sprainedbrain I love this community and all of the great book friends I‘ve made here. I love how much more I have read every year since joining, and I love that I am always adding new-to-me and exciting books I wouldn‘t have know about without Litsy to my tbr. 1mo
sprainedbrain I love seeing what you‘re reading, what you‘ve been up to, how your pet is, your funny memes, what you got in the mail today, what you made for dinner, what your reading plans are, your kids, your spouse, your houseplants. I love that I can fail miserably at photo challenges and readalongs and not be judged. 😂 1mo
sprainedbrain I love that I can do Litsy my way and you can do Litsy your way. I also love that I can keep scrolling if I‘m not interested, mute hashtags, and unfollow at will. I promise my feelings won‘t be hurt if you unfollow me, because honestly I‘m probably not going to do things any differently moving forward. 🤷🏻‍♀️😂 1mo

sprainedbrain @merelybookish I‘m sure it would survive 😂. I am so glad that so many have stayed active since the first year, and happy to still Litsy with you! ❤️ 1mo
sprainedbrain @LibrarianRyan Haha, that book tag was 👌🏻. Thanks, Ryan! ❤️ 1mo
Chrissyreadit I‘m really glad you posted by the way, because after I completed it I saw it in a different light- I think litsy is fine. I‘m curious as to what @TimSpalding would say needs to happen for sustainability on their end, but it needs to meet a wide range of interests and personalities of readers on a platform and amazingly it does that. The only thing I would change is searching the tbr- with over 1,000 books on mine its difficult to maintain. 1mo
ljuliel My intentions with doing the questions was to give people the opportunity to voice their opinions . I read through every single one and didn‘t see anyone being rude or disrespectful. If you ask 100 people for an opinion, you‘ll get 100 different responses . Everyone likes different parts of Litsy. There‘s no wrong way to DO Litsy. Just post whatever you want. 1mo
sprainedbrain @ljuliel I didn‘t say anyone was being rude or disrespectful, and everyone is certainly entitled to their opinions. I follow a lot of people, and I saw many posts and comments indicating that people disliked a lot of things I do and have done regularly, and I figured that there may be others who also saw some of that and were disheartened. It is odd to see people wishing for more activity here and also wanting less of some types of posts. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 1mo
sprainedbrain @Chrissyreadit I agree that there are many things that could enhance the experience, and making the tbr more functional is at the top of my list. I just would hate to see limits on the social side of things. I love the community. 1mo
Shadowfat I really like everything about this post and all the wonderful comments of support! I joined Litsy to share my love of books with people as passionate as I am. Plus I enjoy the pet and food pics too 😁🐕🍝. Also I enjoy how supportive everyone is when you have a bad day or health issues! 1mo
ljuliel I‘ve sorta learned in life that you‘ll never please everyone . No matter what you do, someone will find fault with it. I think you‘re a really valid member ( as everyone else is) , and we each add our own flavor to the mix, for lack of a better term. All those flavors are needed to make Litsy what it is. I‘m sorry if anyone offended you. I‘m sure lots of other people post the same things as you, so I don‘t think anyone was pinpointing one person. 1mo
ljuliel I also think that all of the extra things help to make Litsy unique. I like seeing what someone made for supper, funny pictures of pets, things that are happening in daily life. It makes it more interesting. The one comment that came up a lot is that book posts had gone down , so that‘s why I‘m hoping to promote that. I don‘t see that anything needs eliminated. 1mo
Chrissyreadit 🥰my name is Chrissyreadit and I may be addicted to swaps, pet pics, food posts and books....oh- and challenges...buddy reads... conversations...sigh- I have no desire to stop. 🤣📚😎📚 1mo
youneverarrived You‘re one of my faves on here 💕 1mo
vivastory You know I think you're the cat's pajamas. 🙌 1mo
readordierachel I love all your posts 💞 Keep on keeping on 1mo
sprainedbrain @ljuliel no, I didn‘t feel pinpointed or offended it all. I was more concerned with other, newer people seeing some of that and bing scared off. I have read 180 books this year and posted at least a review, sometimes a blurb, for every one. I‘m here for the books, but the friends are nice too. 1mo
ljuliel Wow, that‘s a really great number for the year ! This was a bit of a poor year for me. I only got to around 50 some so far. Been a challenging year. I‘m hoping for better in the coming year. Thanks for understanding. I really don‘t want to upset anyone in here. I just miss Litsy from a couple years ago, when people posted a book review and you‘d get 100 likes. 1mo
sprainedbrain @ljuliel I know what you mean! It is down a bit. 1mo

HOTPock3tt @sprainedbrain Let‘s buddy read this one together, Jenni! ♥️ I‘ve decided I need a fun challenge lol. I haven‘t actually done a buddy read before but it should be fun. I was hovering around amazon kindle at midnight on the release date and waiting for this one to come out! I ended up just downloading a sample, but will probably actually buy it. Tell me when you start it and I‘ll start with you! 🤗 1mo
sprainedbrain @HOTPock3tt oh yes, that sounds funny! I‘ve done buddy reads but I‘m terrible at them because I read ahead or fall behind. Mine is a library copy though, so I must have it finished by 4:27 pm on 11/27. 😂 1mo
HOTPock3tt Yay! Ok sounds good! I‘m going to download it then and start tonight! When you do a buddy read how much is expected for the first week? I don‘t exactly know the rules 😅we‘re batting 1000 already since you‘re terrible at them and I don‘t even know the rules lmao!! 🤣🤣🤣 @sprainedbrain we just have to make sure we go thru it quickly enough to be done before you need to return it 🤔 (edited) 1mo
sprainedbrain @HOTPock3tt I think we can make our own rules since it‘s just us. Haha. Looks like it‘s divided into 6 books, and I have 18 days before it‘s due back. So if we read one book every 2-3 days, we should be fine. Is that too fast? Total estimation, but that‘s about 73 pages every 2-3 days. 1mo
sprainedbrain @HOTPock3tt which is making me worried already because if I really like it, I‘m going to finish it way faster than that. 😂😂😂 1mo
HOTPock3tt Ok that‘s fine! 🤗♥️ #Excited @sprainedbrain 1mo
HOTPock3tt @sprainedbrain even if you go faster that‘s ok... as long as were reading the same book AROUND the same time so we can chat about it 😎 1mo
sprainedbrain @HOTPock3tt I‘m excited, too! I guess we can just post about what we‘ve read and discuss as we go? ❤️❤️❤️ 1mo
HOTPock3tt Ok we‘ll do that! ❤️❤️❤️ @sprainedbrain 1mo
sprainedbrain @HOTPock3tt perfect! I‘m so glad you suggested this! 1mo
HOTPock3tt @sprainedbrain me too!! And it‘s QUITE interesting so far! 😃I started last night... I guess we can do the first discussion after we both finish book one? I‘m listening to the audiobook so hopefully they will tell me when I get to book 2 😅 1mo
sprainedbrain @HOTPock3tt haha you don‘t have to stop on my account! I‘m doing the audio too, starting tonight when I finish my current book. I‘m sure I will go fast. 😬 1mo
HOTPock3tt @sprainedbrain I‘m finished with book 1 (and into book 2 lol) whenever you want to chat about it 😎 1mo
sprainedbrain @HOTPock3tt won‘t be long! I‘m so hooked on this book already! 1mo
HOTPock3tt @sprainedbrain Me too! I‘m listening in my every waking moment 😂lol (edited) 1mo
sprainedbrain @HOTPock3tt I seem to have passed right in to book 2!! (edited) 1mo
HOTPock3tt I will say this: I adore the espionage in this story surrounding books! 😃Books/fairy tale realms somehow being dangerous material people are trying to protect ‘by any means necessary‘ 😂 also the place he is trying to explore after his lost opportunity ie. finding himself WITHIN the story but things REALLY started to move for me with the masquerade ball and the new players he met! ✨♥️You‘ve passed that already right? OMG! 😍 @sprainedbrain (edited) 1mo
sprainedbrain @HOTPock3tt YES! I want to go to a party like that. 😍 1mo
HOTPock3tt @sprainedbrain Me too! Someone dressed as Edgar Allen Poe, women with dresses made of pages, literary themed DRINKS!! 🍷 and famous authors in attendance! Omg what if Atwood was there?! 😍🎉 I also loved Dorian naming himself after picture of Dorian Gray (I loved that book!) and the sinister fur coat lady who threatened to kill his mom if he so much as TWEETS the existence of the fairy tale realm! 😱🙌🏽♥️ (edited) 1mo
HOTPock3tt @sprainedbrain I think I mostly just want to dress up as a literary character and have people try to guess my costume and drink literary themed drinks lol 🍷🤣 I would go as Fayre from ACOMAF. How about you? Which character would you go as? I wanted to dress as her this Halloween but I ended up having to work on Halloween.... (edited) 1mo
HOTPock3tt @sprainedbrain what if Deb Harkness was there?! 😃🙌🏽 I would LOVE to pick her brain about the characters of A discovery of witches and Elizabethan England!! ♥️♥️♥️ ok I‘ll stop now lmao! 🤣 1mo
sprainedbrain @HOTPock3tt omg when he saw the ‘famous author‘ I was all like IT‘S STEPHEN KING. HAS TO BE. 😂 1mo
sprainedbrain @HOTPock3tt I would want to go as Clare Fraser from Outlander. That would give me many different styles of dress to choose from. 1mo
HOTPock3tt @sprainedbrain That would be AMAZING! 😍You could either do her Scottish home spun or her French high fashion or 1960‘s career woman! not to stray from topic but you‘ve read all the Outlander books too right?😃As soon as I finished the last one, written in my own hearts blood I was sad. I STILL feel like the characters from outlander are the ones I‘ve felt the closest too that I‘ve EVER read. They feel the most life-like if that makes any sense 😂 1mo
sprainedbrain @HOTPock3tt Yes, I‘ve read them all and then listened to them again! You continue proving to be my #booksister. I feel so strongly about those characters, and while I don‘t think any of those books were even 5-star reads for me, when people ask for my favorite books/series, authors, or characters they are always on the list. ❤️ 1mo
HOTPock3tt I know right! #BookSister I‘m STILL shocked by how similar our tastes are! I also feel quite strongly about those characters and I feel like I‘m the most invested in them than any others from any other books. In other books I‘ve read the characters are just ‘the characters‘ but Jaime/Claire +Briana and Jenny etc are THEMSELVES!! have a feeling of being AT HOME when I read the Outlander books that I don‘t have with any other series @sprainedbrain (edited) 1mo
HOTPock3tt @sprainedbrain and they weren‘t 5 star books for me either!! 😂 I remember telling someone that outlander was one of my fave series and I was thinking “she‘s going to read my litsy profile and realize I rated most of them “so-so” 🤣 but they are always on my fave lists across the boards (characters/books/series etc) its the attachment to the characters + being so invested in them+ the feeling of home when you read the books... (edited) 1mo
sprainedbrain @HOTPock3tt EXACTLY. I have legitimate feelings for so many characters in those books. They are like family. 1mo
HOTPock3tt @sprainedbrain they really are!! ♥️that‘s the BEST description I‘ve ever heard for it. They are like FAMILY. 1mo

A very light, YA regency romantic fantasy. Really cute, and the bits of humor and wizardry kept me interested, although it took me longer to read than expected.

I especially love the concept: this is an epistolary novel that consists of letters between two cousins/friends: Cecelia is stuck in the country while Kate is out for a season in London and magical mystery ensues. The two authors each wrote a character—that works well!

sprainedbrain I probably wouldn‘t have read this if it weren‘t for the #popsugar challenge... it‘s sort of a cozy and those aren‘t my favorite genre at all. I needed a book by two female authors, and this fit the bill. Glad I read it! 🙌🏻 1mo
batsy I enjoyed it, too. Sweet and light! 1mo
Amie I've had this on my kindle for so long, and I really need to get around to reading it! 1mo
MaureenMc I, too, have had the ebook for ages, but haven‘t gotten to it yet. I didn‘t realize it was epistolary- my favorite genre! (Wait, is epistolary considered a genre? 🤔) 1mo
rubyslippersreads I love this book! 1mo

Tipping The Velvet | Sarah Waters
post image

Fun fact: I did not know what ‘tipping the velvet‘ meant until this book. Yay for learning new things! 😂

Loved this book from start to finish. In retrospect, this is not surprising as I do enjoy a good Dickens-esque, sprawling Victorian London drama. This is that, plus a lesbian coming-of-age story. 🙌🏻

Excellent writing and a wonderful cast of supporting characters. Nan is not always a likable heroine, but she‘s so entertaining.

Texreader So... what does it mean? 1mo
sprainedbrain @Texreader I‘m going let you google it. 😬 (edited) 1mo
Texreader @sprainedbrain haha! Yep. I‘m a wee bit smarter now. 1mo
sprainedbrain @Texreader @LeahBergen the really fun part is that I read the whole thing not knowing until near the end when Nan found out. 😂 1mo
Reggie Lol, nice, I had no idea either. 1mo
sprainedbrain @Reggie happy to share my newfound knowledge. 😂 1mo
BarbaraBB I didn‘t know either 🤪 1mo
readordierachel You've made me want to read this even more! 1mo
HOTPock3tt Yay for lesbian coming of age!! 🙌🏽♥️ I need to read this!! I started fingersmith but have yet to finish it 😅 @sprainedbrain 1mo
sprainedbrain @HOTPock3tt it‘s so good! 😍 1mo

Imaginary Friend | Steven Chbosky
post image

I finished earlier today and haven‘t been able to read a word since... I am going to force myself into something completely different now to try to avoid a book hangover.

My full review is on my blog: http://sprainedbrain.blog/2019/11/02/imaginary-friend-by-stephen-chbosky/

I‘m ready to discuss this whenever you are @TorieStorieS 🖤

Jee_HookedOnBookz Wowww! Sounds good! Stacked! ❤️ 1mo
vivastory This is on my TBR. I strongly suspect this is Chbosky's take on Tony/Danny's relationship in Shining & Dr Sleep. 1mo
sprainedbrain @vivastory Definitely very similar... up to a point. 😬 1mo

lele1432 I'm so glad I got this one! The sample I read was engrossing. Can't wait to dig into it! 1mo
TorieStorieS How did I miss that you finished??? Let‘s talk about the end!!! I wanted even more!! Also, did the whole town have stitching scars??? 1mo
Callemarie Wait this was a botm!!! Ahhh I gotta go get it right now!!! 1mo
Callemarie Nooooooo its sold out my life is ruined!!!! 1mo
sprainedbrain @TorieStorieS and I missed that you commented? I‘m so sorry! Quite the twist ending, right? I was so sure I had it figured out and I was so wrong. The hissing lady is Eve?? Wow wow wow. 😊 1mo
sprainedbrain @Callemarie I think it sold out really fast... maybe they didn‘t have many to begin with. My kid always beats me by a day or two at ordering her BOTM. She got it as an add-on but when I ordered the next day there were none. I hope you get it elsewhere! 😕 1mo

This Is Halloween | James A. Moore
post image

Lots of people are in costume at work today.

I went as a 40ish-year-old witch who is thoroughly annoyed with inches of snow on our pumpkins (and messing up my commute), disgusted with the ‘leadership‘ of my country, fed up with the patriarchy but trying to chill out wearing my lovely new fire agate from @phatsallylee 🖤

Also, I wore this festive new pin.

Happy Halloween to all my Litsy friends!

vivastory Yeah, this weather sucks. We got our first snow of the season last night. Happy Halloween, friend! 1mo

sprainedbrain @vivastory we had snow Monday night, too, but just a little. This is just stupid. Happy Halloween to you, Scott! 1mo
phatsallylee No snow here just wet and yucky! You look great in the picture! 1mo
Reggie And despite that, you look heavenly! 😇 (edited) 1mo
sprainedbrain @phatsallylee @Reggie Ha! Thank you 😊 1mo
HOTPock3tt Pretty!! ♥️ you look great with your hair that color!!! 😃 I usually dress up a bit for Halloween at work too but I was running late 😐. We got about an inch of snow here in Michigan too 😟lol! @sprainedbrain (edited) 1mo
sprainedbrain @HOTPock3tt thanks! I‘m going to color it my normal dark soon. 😃 1mo

As if all of the wonderful stuff in my package from Mel wasn‘t enough, my witch sister/swap host extraordinaire Rachel has spoiled me even further. 😍

Thank you so much, my friend, for all of this awesomeness! I‘ve wanted the tagged book for a while, and I‘m crazy about everything else you chose for me. You are the best! 🖤🖤🖤

Meaw_catlady You are so welcome!!! I preordered that antique anatomy tarot for myself and I was like I should get 2 because I‘m sure Jenni would love it as well!! 🖤🖤🖤 I‘m glad you love everything !! Blessed Samhain! 1mo
