Doctor Zhivago
Doctor Zhivago | Boris Pasternak
First published in Italy in 1957 amid international controversy, Doctor Zhivago is the story of the life and loves of a poet/physician during the turmoil of the Russian Revolution. Taking his family from Moscow to what he hopes will be shelter in the Ural Mountains, Zhivago finds himself instead embroiled in the battle between the Whites and the Reds. Set against this backdrop of cruelty and strife is Zhivago's love for the tender and beautiful Lara, the very embodiment of the pain and chaos of those cataclysmic times. Pevear and Volokhonsky masterfully restore the spirit of Pasternak's original—his style, rhythms, voicings, and tone—in this beautiful translation of a classic of world literature.

A window in my library got stuck slightly open, so I had to move lots of my TBR farther away from it. In the process, decided to organize my #1001Books TBR separately (abc by author). I have so many 😱! This doesn‘t include TBRs mixed into my shelves. In my defense, most were picked up used 😂.

Yes that‘s two translations of the tagged book; when I get to it I‘ll decide which I prefer.

Starting this today for my book club. We're reading it over the next 2 months. It's a good selection for winter. I listened to the audiobook several years ago and have watched the movie a couple of times, and I'm looking forward to experiencing it in print.

Crazeedi Oh I fell in love with this book when I read many years ago, and the movie too...so sad so beautiful, so Russian, took the language in high school and have been fascinated ever since 5mo

I have not read this book, but I did see the movie. One of the most beautiful scenes takes place in the boyhood home of Yuri Zhivago (played by Omar Sharif). It is covered in ice. Yuri has gone there to escape the Russian Revolution with his lover, Lara, played by the beautiful, Julie Christie. #iceprincess #nofemmeber

I really enjoyed the experience of reading this book. The history, the landscapes of Russia, the particulars of life in this place:time...all fantastic. This translation uses language poetically which made some metaphors & descriptions even more well-rendered.

I found the characters to be the weakest part of the story. They made strange choices without any clear reason why, & their reactions were melodramatic & strained credulity.

So I have never seen the films of this or read it before but it seems like there is a “shitty older man uses/abuses desperate younger woman whom everyone thinks is crazy AF” thing happening which I may not be down for right now.

I‘ve been reading several books in translation lately and wow, is the translation itself SO important. You can tell if it‘s good or not, even if you don‘t know much about the language in which the book was originally written.

This one, I have a really good translation by a married couple, Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky.

As a kid of the Cold War I had to learn all about Russia at school. Later at University I graduated in International Relations. The Cold War was over by then but Russia still was a major subject. And yet, the most I learned about the Russian #Revolution and its implications, was by this book. #heyjune

sisilia Which translation do you prefer? 12mo
Cinfhen I know very little about the Russian Revolution. Where did u grow up? I feel like the US HS curriculum barely covered world history in my day. 12mo
BarbaraBB @sisilia I read it in Dutch... you probably didn‘t? 12mo
See All 12 Comments
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen In the Netherlands. We had a lot of world history. Russia, but also China, colonialism, apartheid, US and Central America, and WWII of course. 12mo
Cinfhen That‘s amazing. I remember learning early US, French & British history , of course slavery and WWI some WWII but unfortunately not much more from HS. I don‘t recall my kids learning Russia, China, SA or other European history outside of the conflicts leading to the World Wars. That‘s why I love books so much, especially HF. Or even memoirs 12mo
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen The French Revolutionary of course, and the conflicts in the Middle East too. It is probably because we‘re such a small country. We hardly learned anything about our own history! 12mo
Areader2 My moms favorite movie! 12mo
Aimeesue @Cinfhen Still true. In US schools, you pretty much gloss over a bunch of countries (and Mesopotamia!) in elementary school, then go to state history and Native American history. US history in middle school. Then *maybe* a year of world history in HS, but the other 3 yrs are US centered. I think we learn the history of other countries mostly from films and lit. Fr. revolution = A Tale of Two Cities. 12mo
Cinfhen That‘s true!! I remember now my kids were assigned The Good Earth for summer reading (history) one year and The source by Michener another year. @Aimeesue (edited) 12mo
BarbaraBB @Aimeesue @Cinfhen I really think that is a chance missed to learn to understand more about the rest of the world - in current times. 12mo
Aimeesue @Cinfhen I bought Murder at the House of Rooster Happiness through Kindle Daily Deals last week and as I was reading it, I realized that I had NO idea what the culture or history of Thailand was. I have cousins who were adopted from Laos and Cambodia, and I know *nothing* about that part of the world. Time to expand! 12mo
GypsyKat I have still never read this, or seen the movie! 🙈 12mo

LiterRohde I spent years thinking it was a waste of time and no one wants to read what I have to say anyway. Now that I‘m in a better place after a decade of not living (I know, TMI), I‘ve decided to slowly just get back to writing for myself; because I really do feel better when I read and write. And if others like it - bonus. Litsy is helping. Insta, FB, and Twitter are along for the ride. And I have a few blog ideas I just need to pull the trigger on. 13mo

I wasn‘t a fan? What I expected: timeless romance. What I got: fast forwarding through Yuri‘s life and the timeless romance is about 30% of the book. This book is really interesting if you care about Russian history, a social commentary on communism and a lot of philosophical questions. If you look for plot, character depth you will be disappointed. However if you want Russian history and philosophy, then this is for you! ⭐️⭐️⭐️

#dogsoflitsy Lola is not too impressed with all the Russian names. So I‘m reading too many big novels at once. I‘m halfway through War & Peace, which is fine. It‘s a re-read. I‘m still struggling through Infinite Jest (too stubborn to give up but I don‘t like it) and I‘m slowly reading through the Forsyte Saga. But now... the Reddit bookclub started Doctor Zhivago. Their schedule is less than 20 pages a day so I thought why not... 🤷‍♀️😱

Half way through, it seemed as though the author was whining through the main character and his incapability to live with his "sins". The details about the war and Revolution dwindled towards the end. If you didn't feel like you'd been dragged through the mud by three quarters through the book, then the ending certainly dropped you. So depressing. While I didn't expect a happy ending to this story, I guess I also did not expect the tragic ending.

I first read this book in my early twenties. I raved about the love story and the descriptions of Russia strengthened my already strong desire to see The country for myself. Twenty years on I have to say I found the love story non-existent, but loved the evocation of that period in time and the conflicted feelings Yuri has.
