I usually steer clear of ‘coming if age‘ novels - but this is just so gorgeous. Robert, in his 16th summer, prior to heading down the pit as is the family tradition - sets out on foot to just walk. On that walk he meets Dulcie - and they have a profound impact on each other. The nature writing is amazing - it‘s lived and felt and just beautiful. And the relationship between them is balanced, meaningful and fun to witness. Loved it!

So I‘ve just bought a ticket to my first festival! To clarify - it‘s all about nature books and it‘s on a farm and it involves walks to see the introduction of Beavers- but it‘s still a festival 🤣🤣🤣. So need to priorities some of the authors who will be walking and talking!

Horse: A Novel | Geraldine Brooks

Loved this and it was going to be one of my top 10 2022 books ( it still might sneak in at no.10!) - until I stopped loving it when I hit the final 100 pages. Up until that point it was brilliant - I got a real sense of the weight of the horses, their personalities and the bonds they form. Thought the different timeline strands were clear but at times interrupted the pace - I just wanted to stay with the horse!

DGRachel Oh no! I hate when the ending lets me down. 😔 2d
Mitch @DGRachel I know! I was all set to but zillions of copies of this and give it to everyone! But whilst it‘s still good - I‘m not feeling evangelical! 1d

Summer in Cornwall - but whilst the rocky coastline and presence of the sea may feel summery that‘s where the lightness ends! This book is layered with mysteries, dark, tangled relationships, abuse, violence and the legacy of war. It‘s using the format of the Golden Age but with a good dose of realism! Tey‘s Scotland Yard friend - Archie really lead this narrative and it feels a little early in a series to allow the main character to step back.

Really enjoyed both his approach to regenerative farming and the history of the estate at Holkham that Fiennes shares. As a place we‘ve walked often I‘ll be much more alert on our next trip to the hedgerows, skies and bird song. My lasting take away will making a difference is about the small changes that can be made easily- we don‘t have to wait for the monumental.

An oblique collection of small micro essays that tell fragments of the authors life story through clothes. As the Senior Curator for Fashion at the V&A Wilcox clearly has a deep connection to clothes, to fabric, to cultural histories and to fashions. Where this book worked best for me is where the clothes are central stage - she writes memorably with passion and conviction. Where the clothes are more accidental to the story my interest wained.

iread2much I love the V&A IG account! This book would be fun to read with the photos 3w

This wasn't what I was expecting - the cover would suggest a lighter, summery type read - of vacations, families and messy choices. And it is about that - but its darker and deeper and I wasn't ready for that. What I loved was her detailed creation of time and spaces. It was a really visual book - where both the natural watery world of ponds, lakes and oceans could be smelt and felt - as well as the interiors perfectly pitched in time and place.

Cathythoughts Great review. I have this one and am looking forward to getting to it 👍🏻♥️ 3w

Love it when the right book falls into your hands at the right time! We recently moved from the city to the Suffolk countryside & been craving to understand the landscape around us, fascinated by the movement of farm machinery, the cycle of growth & the quality of the earth. Langford - who farms very near to us - tells the stories of farmers who are beginning to do things differently, in more diverse, sustainable and restorative ways. Fascinating!

This is a complex novel of layers - empire, family, rivalry, oppression, sexuality and history, to name but a few! Add to all of that some magic, a thirst for power, strong women who rule and those that want to rule, desire and you have a very satisfying - politically fuelled fantasy that has a touch of romance and an approach to the world that I was craving in Game of Thrones but never even got a glimpse of!

Blaxland's voice is loud in this book - rightly so, as it's all about her house and a year living in it. She's forthright and opinionated, giving lots of fodder for opposing views, spectrums of agreement and healthy debate. The book is wide in scope - giving us a taster of the microcosm of wildlife, sky, characters and the rhythm of country life as she waits of the cliff to recede and her home to be taken by the sea.

A really interesting premise, what happens when nature breaks the law? When trees fall and kill, when elephants accidental roll killing villagers, when birds take on fighter jets - and win! There was joy in the quirky, enjoyment in the obscure - what was less enjoyable was spending so much time amongst different ways that animals are killed just because they dare to get in the path of humans.

julesG It's a Mary Roach I don't own yet. It's non-fiction with a yellow cover. I think I've found the next addition to my yellow NF bookshelf. 2mo

A fast paced story - that really evokes the vibe of 1970s London - class and race dominating relations and communities. A really interesting exploration of how architecture tries to shape our experience of the city, our understanding of community and how its attempt to include / exclude. This is a well told story - that is gripping and will stay with me for a while!

People bonded by the clandestine & for the most part illegal collection of whale body parts, for magic & profit, for curiosity & collection. The author becomes part of this informal network in search of his own understanding of his relationship to whales & their impact on his psyche. Lots of interesting whale rated passion here but also a little too much of the authors angst & psychological workings that I really didn't warm to.
