Yesterday‘s library #bookhaul It was part of my first post COVID errands & required a long nap afterwards. 😵 I went to pick up my holds, The Verifiers & Fire in the Sea & then found the tagged book which I have been wanting to read, a small graphic novel & the plant-centered cookbook.
A good little haul—the 📚🐔 approves.

I loved Convenience Store Woman & appreciate how the author writes about characters who are outside the norm but this book was at the really dark end of crazy. I‘m not even sure how to review—parts of it are a pick but at times it was a pan as I felt the author was tossing triggers in there at the end for shock value & the dark humor that I appreciated in CSW was just too dark to be funny to me . I finally ended up splitting the difference with⬇️

DebinHawaii … a So-So rating & that doesn‘t capture it well either. 🤷🏻‍♀️ In the end, I‘m not sure what to make of it & I will probably be thinking about it (& being disturbed by it) for a while. (edited) 6d

I‘ve not managed to read much this week with a COVID headache 🤕 & fatigue but I did mange to finish this one, the 2nd in the cozy mystery series. It‘s been months since I read the 1st but I found myself caught back up in the 4 main characters & the town of Miracle Springs. I love all of the book references & the mystery was interesting too & had some twists that added to it. Looking forward to the next two before I start the 5th for a book tour.

After managing to avoid it for so long & being scheduled to get a second booster next week, COVID finally got me. 😳😩🤧😷🤒🤕🥴

I had a scratchy throat Thursday into Friday & by Friday afternoon it hit me hard & I tested positive. The worst part is the headache making reading not so fun, so it‘s napping & Netflix today & likely getting a bit behind in my #buddyreads

My #TBR for May is once again, way too ambitious, but it‘s good to have goals. 4 #buddyreads for #sundaybuddyread & #pemberlittens & Taste for my bi-monthly virtual foodie bookclub (e-book & audiobook). A few titles I‘m going to try to get to for the #AsianPacificAmericanHeritageMonth challenge through my library & I‘m on a June book tour for the 5th book in Ellery Adam‘s Secret Book & Scone Society Series & I need to read 2-4 before it.🤷🏻‍♀️📚

Finished recently for book tour review but never posted. The photos are stunning & the essays accompanying them are well written & interesting. Slightly smaller than most National Geographic tomes (8.8" x 8.8"), its 352 pages had me lingering over the stories of trees, finding out facts & marveling over the sheer gorgeousness of Mother Nature in all her glory. It made me want to go forest bathing & immerse myself in the sights, sounds & smells.

This book popped up in a YA historical list & was available through my library e-books. A quick but intense read about a Nigerian teen taken by the terrorist group Boko Haram when her village is attacked. Well written, moving (i shed tears at the book & the afterward)) & so important to read to keep those still missing in mind) as it‘s based on interviews with many young women kidnapped by the group. I‘ll be thinking about this one for a while.💚

Was able to finish this today, but now I‘m sad that the wait for Book #5 begins.😢 This one has Sam & Clive in England by way of Paris & after the evil vampire trying to destroy Clive for revenge. Sam‘s bad assery continues as does Clive‘s hotness (this cover is not a good measurement)🙄 & the usual snark & plethora of supernaturals & fae make this a good entry in the series. My new favorite character? Wolfhound puppy, Fergus.💜 There‘s a sweet ⬇️

Post 2 of my #independentbookstoreday #bookhaul -just the books. Jane Mount the illustrator is a delight. I had to include a better pic of her card for my bookstore with local books that was a freebie in this one. I bought 2 Adam J. Kurtz books that he signed & then a book of his journal stickers. I have been wanting “The Book of Difficult Fruit” & got “The Path to Kindness: Poems of Connection and Joy” because poetry was discounted & I vibed ⬇️

DebinHawaii …with it. The 4 books on the right were my freebies—a YA #ARC & then Oceanic (poetry), Swell (woman traveling alone on a sailboat) & Cereal (UK travel & style magazine with a collecting theme that I plan to use the images in for journaling). 3w

This 9th book in the Tracy Crosswhite series isn‘t out until August but I had to read the NetGalley #arc because I *needed* a little kick-ass Tracy time. The cold case is a decades old disappearance of a newspaper reporter requested by her daughter. The mystery is interesting & Dugoni does his usual great job with the research & weaving all the intricate details together. A trip back to Seattle & some of my favorite places is always welcome too.

I had my doubts about this classic (published in 1922) going in to #SundayBuddyRead but it turned out to be a lovely surprise that although 100 years old & about 4 women in 1920‘s England, still has relevance today. Charming, humorous & with scenery descriptions stirring enough to make me want to drop everything & head to Italy, it was an enjoyable & perfect for April. Finished up this library e-book this week & really enjoyed it. It‘s a deep dive into the show so if you are a geek like me (it‘s my go-to comfort show) & want all the backstories you‘ll get them all. I must be honest, this is a reluctant pick because I admire Elizabeth Gaskell‘s quite modern writing for 1854 about the classes, gender roles, & the rural life vs industrialization, but I slogged through this one, got behind & then did 3 chapters a day to catch up & finally finished it to get it off my plate. I‘m glad I read it, but found almost every character tedious (occasionally even John Thornton who was the best of the lot). I‘ll forever ⬇️

DebinHawaii …think of it as a mostly depressing novel where almost every character is either annoying, dies or is annoying & then dies. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Read with the #PemberLittens 1mo

So I was not into Sanditon at first although I read the unfinished chapters many moons ago & have had the PBS series DVR‘d to watch. I believe it was trying to read it, The Other Bennet Sister & North and South at the same time for #Pemberlittens Well, I sped through TOBS & set aside N&S (I‘m going to jump back in) & then found it quite delightful. Witty & fun & a WHOLE LOT of seaweed, the author did Jane Austen a solid in finishing her book ⬇️

The Deepest of Secrets | Kelley Armstrong

Pickpick

Had to stay up last night & finish the 7th Rockton book as my library copy if due back today. It‘s a fairly quick read though & I‘m always ready to spend time in this off-the-grid town with Casey & Dalton. I thought the mystery was somewhat light & easy to guess. It really serves as a transition into a different Rockton & it will be interesting to see where Armstrong goes with it.. Hopefully she continues & the year wait to the next book begins.

I‘m not sure you can live in Hawaii & not know the name Rell Sunn, international champion surfer who died in 1998, too young at 47 after battling cancer for 14 years. Known as the “Queen of Makaha” this book is a collection of stories & memories by people who knew her. Some are locally familiar names, some not, but all paint a compelling portrait of the athlete, icon, & friend she was. Read for my library‘s #WomanChangeMakers reading challenge. 💙

Luck of the Titanic | Stacey Lee

Pickpick

Although I dabble in YA fantasy & contemporary, I think YA historical fiction is my sweet spot. Stacey Lee writes such strong characters & her books give me a different perspective on history. We know what happened to the Titanic & the last quarter of the book was intense, but the entire story was a pleasure to read. It had me thinking & Googling-always a good sign in a historical novel. This will likely end up on my 2022 favorites list. Thanks ⬇️

DebinHawaii … to @TheBookHippie for making it a #sundaybuddyread & the always thoughtful discussions that add to the experience. 🤗 2mo

tpixie @DebinHawaii I use googling as a sign of a good book also!! 2mo
DebinHawaii @tpixie Yes, if it has me wanting to learn more it usually means it‘s a great book. Unless I am Googling to check the author‘s facts! 🤣 2mo

This week was long & tiring & the book I wanted to pick up & read was this one. At first I was just a bit ahead of the 2 chapters-a-day pace of the #PemberLittens then suddenly I was WAY ahead & finished last night.

I 💚 Mary Bennet & this book that gave her the attention she deserves. There was a lot of set up, awkward pain for Mary & P&P revisiting to get to her finding herself & path but I was happy with it all. A cozy book to curl up with.

LeahBergen This was a fun read. I sped through big chunks of it, too. 😊 2mo
sprainedbrain I loved this book so much! ❤️ 2mo

The Book of Cold Cases | Simone St. James

My #BOTM box finally came in—actually a few days early from their estimate & before the end of the month this time (media mail takes FOREVER to Hawaii). After skipping a couple of months, I loaded up in March. Did I *need* 3 books? I don‘t actually *need* the tagged book until August for #SundayBuddyRead but I had to grab it & the other two appealed to me too—the first month in a while that has happened.📚📚📚🤷🏻‍♀️📚📚

DebinHawaii @Patchshank Book twins! 👯 2mo
Chrissyreadit Sigh. I put my account on hold because of so many unread books- but these are three I would have picked. 2mo
actualdisneyprincess omg I just finished The Book of Cold Cases yesterday and just kept randomly yelling “THAT BOOK WAS SO GOOD” at my parents for the rest of the afternoon/evening. can‘t wait to hear what you think!! 2mo

Caught up through Chapter 21 (I had to read Monday‘s chapter today because it certainly won‘t happen tomorrow.)

Chapter 20 was my favorite as there are lots of exclamations over seaweed, seaweed art & shells & shell art & bee stings & home cures on the field trip to Brinshore. Since unlike Charlotte, I find the “charms of seaweed” very moving, this picture made me giggle… 😉😆

sprainedbrain I giggled through all of that seaweed business! 2mo

#SpringEquinoxSwap Photo 2/2

@BookBosomed1 And here is the unwrapped version along with the extra tea & book you sent when you thought it wouldn‘t make it on time. I feel very blessed! The books are perfect-Ostara & the tagged book will be fun to go through this week. Waking the Witch & Moon Spell Magic look fascinating & Cackle has been on my list forever. Love the crystals, local chocolate bar & assorted teas & honey sticks. I think I ⬇️

DebinHawaii …expressed my love of the journal & all the journaling relating goodies in my last post but truly, I could not be more pleased & appreciative of your generosity & how you made this #SES box so special. Thank you so much! A happy & blessed Ostara to you! 🌿💚 2mo

@BookBosomed1 Lindsey, I had to post 2 photos of my amazing #SES box & still didn‘t capture how wonderful it is! This is the “just out of the box” one & the wrap is gorgeous & will be recycled in a junk journaling or paper craft. The journal is beautiful & I love the tools you have given me to fill it with the washi tape, stickers, pens & book of Forest Witch ephemera & that amazing journaling magazine! Thank you!💚💙

The second of two National Geographic books for April book tours in my #bookmail today. I love trees & forests & that this one is a mix of essays & photos & a few quotes like this one from Walt Whitman‘s poem “An Ulster County Waterfall”:

“A primitive forest,
druidical, solitary and
savage…a just
palpable wild and
delicate aroma.”

It‘s a great #bookmail day when two National Geographic books come in for book tour reviews in April! 🤗This is the first. I am a sucker for nature photography especially ocean photography so I am already loving this book about three of the amazing creatures of the deep. The photos are more gorgeous than my quick snaps of them in not great lighting. I mean male seahorse giving birth to lots of tiny babies… come on! 😍🐙🦑 🌊

#PemberLittens

Yeah, so I read ahead this week because I needed to get Mary & I out of a funk. I‘m now at Chap 57. Whoops! 🤷🏻‍♀️
Anyway, no spoilers but in Chap 55, they have lemon posset after dinner. I adore possets (just citrus juice, heavy cream & sugar simmered together & set in the fridge) & make different variations like tangerine & lime. Lemon is my favorite though, so below I‘m linking to my blog post with Nigel Slater‘s recipe in ⬇️

DebinHawaii … case anyone is geeky like me & would like to try making it to go with your reading. It really is the easiest of recipes! https://kahakaikitchen.blogspot.com/2017/01/nigel-slaters-lemon-posset-3-ingredi... 2mo
DebinHawaii Also in the post are links to a couple other recipes & here‘s a link to an article about possets: https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/wordofmouth/2013/sep/19/how-to-make-per... 2mo
LeahBergen That looks lovely! 🍋 2mo
sprainedbrain Yummm. Thanks for sharing! 2mo
