The Book of Joy
The Book of Joy | Dalai Lama, Desmond Tutu
Nobel Peace Prize Laureates His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu have survived more than fifty years of exile and the soul-crushing violence of oppression. Despite their hardships or, as they would say, because of them they are two of the most joyful people on the planet. In April 2015, Archbishop Tutu travelled to the Dalai Lamas home in Dharamsala, India, to celebrate His Holinesss eightieth birthday and to create this book as a gift for others. They looked back on their long lives to answer a single burning question: how do we find joy in the face of lifes inevitable suffering? They traded intimate stories, teased each other continually, and shared their spiritual practices. By the end of a week filled with laughter and punctuated with tears, these two global heroes had stared into the abyss and despair of our times and revealed how to live a life brimming with joy. This book offers us a rare opportunity to experience their astonishing and unprecedented week together, from the first embrace to the final goodbye.

This book is an extended conversation between the Dalai Lama and Desmond Tutu. It is frankly a miracle that they had the time to put this together. It is also a miracle that the plane took off before the earthquake gripped the region. This book is a compendium of advice on how to be joyful.

Morning reading in the dark silence of my cozy old house, with the little thump of kitten feet, while rain hits the windows, brings me joy.

“The more time you spend thinking about yourself, the more suffering you will experience"- Dalai Lama.. I can not express how therapeutic this was for me, life changing and thought provoking. I can not recommend this enough.

Kristin_Reads I loved this one, too. Abrams partnered with Jane Goodall for his newest book on Hope. Also excellent! 2y

Look what‘s under the dust jacket! That was a happy little surprise. This book made me wish I could have been a fly on the wall at this get together. The humor and joy jumped off the page. Not a how-to book (the last section of suggested practices was the weakest I thought) but a great why-to book.

🎧 Thank you @KristenDuck I‘ll relisten!

Surprisingly lighthearted, interesting, inspirational & joyous.

Here are 2 men who live in violent decidedly not joyous oppressive environments.

2 men in their 80‘s.

2 men celebrating a birthday, behaving silly, sharing joy.

It‘s amazing that their friendship exists in this world & truly heartwarming. Great personal stories!

Good narrators but they didn‘t add anything to the book for me.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

KristenDuck I loved this so much and am so happy you enjoyed it as well! I gained a lot from their stories and words of wisdom. 3y

@KristenDuck & @Reggie thank you for two of my three upcoming reads this week. Pretty sure they aren‘t similar in any way other than they are in audio format. 😎 I think I‘m finding that a little ... 😆

KristenDuck I would listen to The Book of Joy all over again!! 3y
Twainy @KristenDuck I have NO idea what it‘s about (I assume joy) It was available on Libby & I grabbed it based on your glowing recommendation alone! There was a Blurb yesterday about 28 books you should read so I added one of those last night so I currently have 4 utterly different books on deck! Thank you for the rec! 3y

The Dalai Lama and Archbishop Tutu share their knowledge about joy and what it means to live a blissful life.

I never wanted this audiobook to end, and I could see myself listening to it again and again in the future.

Compassion seemed to be the keyword for this book, and I doubt there are two better men to discuss this.

I also really appreciated the insight into meditation and their advice for daily practices.

Everyone should read this book!

I‘m not much into self-help books (this was a gift), but I enjoyed the relationship between Tutu and the Dalai Lama, the camaraderie, the humour. I loved the photos of them dancing, smiling, laughing. For those interested, there is a section at the back that includes meditations and ways that both religious leaders wind down and contemplate things. Overall, the book itself, for me, was ok.

2020 Read Harder Challenge, book 12
Prompt: Read a memoir by someone from a religious tradition which is not your own.

The genuine affection between these two humans of wildly different spiritual upbringings is inspiring. They have a lot of insight to share about living a spiritual life no matter WHAT beliefs you connect with. And I loved the fact that they see a sense of humor as an important component of a good and spiritual life.

quote
UnRuLee

“Indeed, the more we turn toward the suffering, our own and others, the more we can turn toward the joy. We accept them both, turning the volume of life up, or we turn our backs on death itself, becoming deaf to its music.”
