This graphic novel was so fun! The artwork was fantastic. Loved how the author incorporated bits of her and her wife‘s lives into the story. A bit cheesy (see what I did there?) but made me smile a lot which is just what I needed at the moment. 5/5⭐️

#TLT Couldn‘t resist the fun since mysteries are my favourite genre! There are so many great detectives to choose from so I made two lists 🕵️

Professional Detectives
1. Hamish Macbeth
2. Adam Dagliesh
3. Thomas Pitt & his wife, Charlotte

Private Detectives
1. Hercule Poirot
2. Mis Marple
3. Sherlock Holmes

(February 8, 2024)

Cuilin I like this breakdown, love Dalgleish!!! 1mo
dabbe Excellent distinction between the two! I've read short stories re: Macbeth and Dagliesh (in ELLERY QUEEN's magazines) but never books. On the TBR! Never heard of #3; on the TBR, too! Thanks for playing! ❤️💜🩷 1mo

I finally had a chance to tally up my 2023 reads and update my Goodreads list. I‘m quite happy with the end result although I‘d have preferred that I‘d stuck with my goal of reading mostly my own books. There‘s just so many good ones at my library!😅 I‘m going to try to make more of a dent in my TBR this year. And I‘ve upped my GR goal from 60 to 75 books. 🤞🏽Hope everyone has an amazing reading year in 2024!💜

marleed You could apply my theory to library loans… I few years back I saw a breakdown on my taxes and I think it was $245 went toward my public library. So let‘s say I can get new books at a discounted $15. That means I need to read 16 books to nullify my tax cost. Same theory after 16+, I start subtracting $15 from my tax bill for each book read! …So, now it‘s totally justified when I hit my library TBR over my physical TBR! 2mo
PurpleyPumpkin @marleed That‘s a fantastic approach! Looking at it this way, I HAVE to use the library for at least some of my yearly reading. I like it! Thanks so much for sharing!🙌🏽 2mo
marleed @PurpleyPumpkin Absolutely, I don‘t consider my library use as free until I‘ve surpassed 16 loans. Then I still don‘t think of it as free so much as making tax dollars work to my advantage. 2mo

I'm so enjoying this series! I've already got the 3rd on hold at my library (please, book gods, let it be available soon!). Holy cow this was one great book! Jane Entwistle‘s narration was spot on and added much enjoyment to my reading. The story itself was captivating. Nearing the end of it, it almost felt like a history lesson of sorts, a history of Norse mythology. There was just so much detail that the author covered. Really well done and I highly recommend the audiobook. Looking forward to the #LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead discussion at the end of the month! 5/5⭐️

Is there ever a lot of hype about this book! It‘s deserving as it‘s very well-written and engaging. But as other reviewers have mentioned , it‘s somewhat predictable and aspects of the ending were a little too pat for me. This novel deals with some important issues and I‘m glad I read it. Rating: 3.5/5⭐️ It reminded me a lot of another novel that I read last year and which I highly recommend, “Looking for Jane.”

Ahh, it was wonderful being back in this world again! While the story lacked the depth of the novels, which stands to reason as it's a play, I did enjoy this follow-up with HP & crew as grownups, raising their own children. I also liked the use of the time-turner & enjoyed how the plot took the reader back in time & illustrated how changes in time affected the present-day world. Word of advice, read before you see the play! 4/5⭐️

I quite enjoyed listening to Simu Liu narrate his memoir. His story is interesting and very honest. His relationship with his parents seems very complicated, but it appears to have evolved into a much more loving and supportive one. If you think Liu's success came easily, think again. This was a lovely book with which to start the summer. A collection of short stories of a family‘s time spent at a summer cottage in Finland. The relationship between Sophia and her grandmother was rendered with grace and love. The author really captured the essence of both characters, likely because they were the image of their real life counterparts. I can see myself rereading this yearly as I ease into the warmer season. 5/5⭐️

UwannaPublishme Yay for you! My goal was 50 and I wound up reading 62. I see we both had a great year. 👍🏻 I‘ll have to check out the Mt TBR challenge. 1y
PurpleyPumpkin @UwannaPublishme Yay for you too! Yes, do check out Mt TBR. It‘s a low key challenge that helps to keep me focussed!😅 1y
UwannaPublishme I just signed up! Thx for the idea. Thought I‘d start with Pike‘s Peak. How about you? 1y
PurpleyPumpkin @UwannaPublishme 🙌🏽 I‘m climbing Mt Vancouver. At 24 books, I didn‘t summit last year. But I did summit in 2021! Here‘s hoping I make it again this year.🤞🏽 (edited) 1y

And that‘s a wrap for my 2022 reading year! It was a great year of reading with The Mercies being the standout. Looking forward to more great reads in 2023!

ShelleyBooksie That's a cool way to narrow it down! 1y
Deblovestoread Such a great book. It made my #Top22of22. 1y

PurpleyPumpkin @ShelleyBooksie @AlaMich First year I tried this book/reading bracket and I think I‘ll do it again! It was fun reviewing my reads of the year. 1y
PurpleyPumpkin @Deblovestoread 👍🏽It really was a fantastic book. 1y
ShelleyBooksie How did you narrow it.down to 2 books per month? 1y
PurpleyPumpkin @ShelleyBooksie I picked my favourite book each month and then picked my favourite between two months and narrowed it down that way. I have to say that it could have been tricky picking just one fav each month. But, it ended up being easier than I anticipated! 1y

Looks like this book has gotten very mixed reviews. Either you love it or hate it. I‘m not quite in the love camp, but I did enjoy the ride! A mystery that was interesting but not overly taxing. Perfect for what is likely to be my last read book of 2022. 3/5⭐️

UwannaPublishme I have this one on my shelves. I must get to it…maybe next Christmas? ☺️ 1y

Henrietta & Eleanor: A Retelling of Jekyll and Hyde: | Robert Louis Stevenson, Libby Spurrier

I read this for the "spooky season" and quite enjoyed it! Definitely a retelling of Jekyll and Hyde and seemed quite gothic to me. The ensemble cast of narrators was great, it felt like one of those old timey radio dramas and was well done. Not a long read, but an entertaining one! Side note: does anyone else get peeved about how Goodreads does a page count on audiobooks? This one clocked in at 3 pages!?

tpixie Ha! I‘ve never noticed the audiobooks info on Goodreads! I just search the book. Didn‘t know they showed audio! But 3 pages?! 1y
PurpleyPumpkin @tpixie It‘s crazy! There‘s usually other options, like a hardcover or paperback, and that‘s what I select. But as this was an Audible original, I was out of luck!🤦🏽‍♀️ 1y
tpixie @PurpleyPumpkin that‘s frustrating! 1y
UwannaPublishme 3 pages? How could that be??? 😆 1y
PurpleyPumpkin @UwannaPublishme Makes no sense to me at all. I wish they‘d guesstimate or revert to a print copy for page count. 🙄 (edited) 1y

I don't recall ever reading this children's classic & I'm glad that I finally did! It's a feel good story that isn't complicated or sad, even though bad things happen. The children are generally unaware of what their parents are enduring. So they make the best of their changed situation. Sure, there are some problematic stereotypes, but for a book written in 1905, it was progressive for it‘s time. #ChildrensClassicRead2022

TheBookHippie I'm so glad you enjoyed it!! I agree with everything you said! I am so glad I read this!!! AND for 1905 I thought it was quite good. 2y

As this book was July‘s pick for the #LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead, I‘m a bit late with my review. ? But I just HAD to post about this one. It was so good! The narrators were excellent and the story absorbing. The author captured antebellum South Carolina in vivid detail. Real-life sisters Sarah and Angelina (Nina) Grimké were her inspiration. They worked tirelessly to end slavery and improve women‘s rights. A compelling read.

Librarybelle Yay! So glad you liked this one!! 2y
PurpleyPumpkin @Librarybelle It really was excellent. Thanks for the pick!👍🏽 2y
UwannaPublishme This sounds really good. Can you believe I haven‘t read any of her books yet? I know I have at least one on my shelves. 2y
PurpleyPumpkin @UwannaPublishme I highly recommend this book! I hadn't read any of her books before either. In a hilarious turn of events, I realized, after I read the audiobook, that I have a physical copy of this book on my shelves! 😅I borrowed the audiobook from the library. At least I didn't buy it again! And happily, I have one of her other books waiting for me on my gigantic tbr. 😊 2y
UwannaPublishme That‘s happened to me before too. 😁 I think I have The Secret Lives of Bees. I‘ll have to dig around and see. Hope you‘re doing well and enjoying these sunny days! 🌻 2y

I read this while on vacation and it was perfect for that. It's the kind of book that I was able to easily get back into even with extended non-reading periods. I thought I had the mystery figured out pretty early, but I was completely wrong! The story, while somewhat disturbing, was quite suspenseful with a decent twist ending that wrapped up quickly. 3/5⭐️

UwannaPublishme That‘s how I like my books lately: light and sweet! Just rec‘d your wonderful letter. And yes, there are now a few more books on my TBR! 😉📚 2y
PurpleyPumpkin @UwannaPublishme Yay! 💌 Always happy to bump up your tbr. 🤭 It‘s a crazy world we‘re living in and I felt like I was in a bit of a reading funk. It‘s times like this when I need lighter books to get my reading flowing again. This story definitely did the trick!👍🏽 2y
UwannaPublishme It sure is a crazy world, especially these last two weeks. Thank goodness for our cozy reads and classics. And my memoirs! I can get lost in those any day. 😁 Hugs to you, my friend! 2y
MrsK Love Aunt Dimity. Definitely lightweight, but always fun and entertaining to read ❤️ 2y

My first book read this month! 😅 It‘s been a slow reading month but I‘m glad I was able to finish this book. Really enjoyed this story. Given that I had no clue what it was about when I began this book, it‘s not surprising that I found it confusing at first. But, it became clearer and I‘m so glad I read it! 5/5⭐️

TheLudicReader I loved this one. 2y
PurpleyPumpkin @TheLudicReader I really did too! The writing was excellent and the story so intriguing. 2y
UwannaPublishme I keep hearing great things about Kate Atkinson! 2y
PurpleyPumpkin @UwannaPublishme I should warn you that her writing/stories can come across as a bit strange. But if you can press through, I think you‘ll enjoy. I thought this novel was really good. 👍🏽 2y
UwannaPublishme Thx for the heads up! Not sure if I can handle “strange” these days.🙃 2y

It‘s been a minute since my last post. 😅 To kickstart June, I thought I‘d post my May reads. As you can see, I binged a bunch of novels from the Hamish Macbeth series. My favourite reads were Children of My Heart and The Price of Salt, both 4/5⭐️. The rest were 3⭐️ reads. A good reading month! 😉

UwannaPublishme Happy almost summer, my friend! Hope you‘re finally enjoying some warmer weather. And wow, you‘re on a reading roll. Yay! 🤗📚👏🏻 2y
PurpleyPumpkin @UwannaPublishme Happy almost summer to you too Donna! We‘ve had some really nice weather, but it‘s cooling off a bit today and rain is here. That‘s okay, at least it isn‘t snow! Hope you‘ve been enjoying your spring. 🌸Oh and I mailed a letter to you today, FINALLY! 😅 Hope it gets to you soon. 💌 2y
UwannaPublishme It‘s always nice to catch up with you, Kimberly! Looking forward to your letter and hearing about your latest reads. I may need to add a few more to my TBR. 😉 2y
