Jaws | Peter Benchley

Pickpick

This year is the 50th anniversary since Jaws was first published. The story still holds up after all this time. We‘re unfortunately still asking what‘s more important: human lives or money?
🚧 This is a banned book!
I have seen the movie many times over the years, & I enjoyed most differences between the two.
Speaking of movies, I was randomly rewatching Back to the Future 2 & laughed at the Jaws 19 prediction.

Kiese‘s writing is raw and unflinching. He speaks to the repeated trauma of being Black in America. How that hurt sometimes comes from those who love us best. He addresses what it means to have a Black body that stays heavy with the secrets and scars it carries no matter what number the scale shows.

The sentence describing an encounter with a policeman hit hard after reading James: “That fool got madder because you were speaking correct English.”

TheBookHippie This book has stayed with me since I first read the ARC. 19h

Agh, I‘m so behind on my reviews, but I finally finished the Red Queen series. The finale wasn‘t perfect but it was a fitting end. There were some added POVs that didn‘t seem to add much, but I loved getting into Evangeline‘s head and her arc. I loved the depth of Aveyard‘s world building and how she didn‘t shy away from politics and strategy to make it all about romance, but the romance piece was still nicely done and realistic. Great series!

This was a gorgeous novel about finding your purpose and following your passions despite external pressures. Grace has always had a life plan, but when the struggle to succeed in her field because of racial and sexist ideals becomes too much, she drunkenly gets married in Vegas and decides to spend the summer with her new wife. A beautiful expression of found family, identity, and dealing with anxiety

#doublespin LOVED this! I think the Tiffany Aching books might be my new favourites in Discworld. Granny Weatherwax is an utter legend and the Nac Mac Feegle are blooming hilarious

Bailedbailed

I may return to this at some point since I bought it on Libro.FM, but for now I‘m bailing at 32%. Unfortunately it‘s very dry and academic and not holding my interest. I wanted more info about how silk fabrics evolved around the world, but so far it‘s mostly about silk moths, where they may have originated and where humans transported them as we spread. Which could have been interesting, but isn‘t presented in a format I‘m absorbing. Oh well.

Soubhiville This was my July #doublespin. 2d

The Salt Path | Raynor Winn

Pickpick

After a devastating medical diagnosis, Raynor & her husband Moth also lose their home & their livelihood. They choose to hike The Salt Path, a hiking trail along the southern coast of England.

Such a tough listen, w/ Moth‘s diagnosis of corticobasal degeneration, their sudden homelessness, & their experiences dealing w/ people‘s biases against the unhoused. But Raynor‘s voice is strong & hopeful, & visceral in painting the landscape. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

I just love the idea of Nick and Nora Charles in space. I hope someone writes that book someday. 🔥

At this point, though I loved The Calculating Stars, I think Robinette is Not For Me. Her attempts at sparkling banter between lovers are simply cringe.

My July #bookspinbingo progress. I've completed the #doublespin pick and am currently reading the #bookspin pick.
This week I'm getting items made to re-stock a local museum gift shop while preparing for my family to go out of town for a week next Monday, so we will see if my reading gets hindered lol
