🎶Another one bites the dust, hey hey, another one bites the dust 🎶

This Bosch book is getting DNFed at 25% read. I‘ve enjoyed other Bosch titles, but this one so far hasn‘t featured much of him at all. I‘m flying to California on Sunday and I want something for the trip that I‘m actually looking forward to picking up again when I have to put it down. #bosch

I am using my new Kobo Clara HD for the first time and so far I like it much more than my 2nd gen Paperwhite. It‘s easier to hold because it‘s lighter, and the orangey Comfortlight is a welcome improvement for night reading. I even accidentally borrowed a library ebook with it last night, as it has integrated OverDrive . #kobo

The Dud Avocado | Elaine Dundy
post image

The Dud Avocado has been quite a ride! Looking up from the book and realizing I wasn‘t actually in Paris in 1955 was disorienting. Sally Jay might not be the most sympathetic or likable of characters, but her immaturity and self-absorption are pretty authentic for a 22 year old. And it‘s FUNNY!!
#nyrb

BarbaraBB I have heard so many good things about this one! 3w
merelybookish This book is a delight! 🥑💚 3w
AlaMich @BarbaraBB it‘s a great book. There is no plot to speak of, so if that is a bookish pet peeve of yours, steer clear. You are just along for the ride with Sally Jay. 😊 3w
AlaMich @merelybookish It is! One Amazon review I read complained that Sally Jay doesn‘t do any thing positive or contribute in any way. Really?! 🙄 3w

I pulled the trigger and converted from being a Kindler to a Koboite (the Clara HD). Well, not completely, if I‘m honest. I still have a lot of books on my Kindle and I also have a Fire. But it will mostly be Kobo going forward. It‘s considerably lighter than the Kindle (yes, I weighed them on my food scale 😆), and I love the warmer Comfortlight. #kobo

Bailedbailed

I just can‘t anymore. I am 25% into this book, and there are SO MANY characters, 80% of whom are men. I like the story and I know that the male-centric cast is somewhat due to the setting (16th century Spain), but still.

Cathythoughts I love a good bail 👍🏻 it‘s over & moving on ... love the moving on part ... next book ♥️👍🏻 (edited) 1mo

If you‘re in the market for an excellent fantasy adventure, look no further than the Gentlemen Bastards! This is a super adventure-y, heist-y read, and it is one of a very few 700-ish page chunksters which I did NOT feel would have benefited from considerable trimming. It‘s pretty great on audio, too! There is a fair amount of violence, however. 5 ⭐️

I have a problem here and I‘m not talking about this atrocity of a cover. 🤢
The Hoopla audiobook app makes backing up or going forward a royal pain. The scrubbing bar is SO TINY! If your book is more than a couple of hours long, it‘s an exercise in frustration. Am I missing something?

And very helpful for background information to complement one‘s reading...

SailorMoon Does it have a philosophycal point of view or more like historical and political? Seems interesting 3mo
AlaMich @SailorMoon The way I would describe the VSI series is that they fill a niche between reading a Wikipedia article about a topic and reading a full-on scholarly book. They‘re written by experts in whatever field, but they don‘t (or shouldn‘t) have a POV. 3mo

AlaMich @TheBookStacker @LauraBeth it wouldn‘t be so bad except it‘s a 45 min drive to Chicago, it‘s cold and rainy 💨💨💦💦💦 (edited) 5mo

My handle is just the beginnings of my first and middle names. But Mich also works for Michigan, which is where my mother‘s family was from/still lives and also a place I love to visit!

If someone knows all there is to know about you, isn‘t that a kind of forgiveness?

LauraBeth In my case, yes! 😂❤️ 5mo
AlaMich @Cathythoughts @LauraBeth I love this quote. I believe it represents what every human wants: someone who knows us, accepts us, and loves us, despite. 5mo

The world-building in this book is fascinating, and I am reading very slowly to get at the meaning of it all. A story of an alternate London where memory is forbidden and music has come to replace language in many ways, it was long listed for the Man Booker Prize.

LauraBeth This sounds interesting! 5mo
LeahBergen It matches your tree! 😍 5mo
AlaMich @LauraBeth It is, very. But the author, who is a violinist, uses many music terms, and I have zero background in music. I can figure most of them out, though. 5mo

AlaMich @LeahBergen Ha! It does! I hadn‘t noticed. 🎄 5mo
LauraBeth Well now I‘m more intrigued! I played the violin 🎻 5mo
AlaMich @LauraBeth Some of the terms are clear if you‘ve studied Latin-based languages, so that helps. But you should do splendidly! 😊 5mo

An Audible sale is awesome, but OMG I get so overwhelmed!! I‘m really picky about audiobooks...the book itself has to be good—obviously—but the narrator has to be just right. There‘s an art to it, know what I mean? 😉

Birdsong28 Is this on in the UK? 😀📚📖 6mo
AlaMich @Birdsong28 I don‘t know. I checked out the UK site but because I‘m not a member of that Audible, it doesn‘t show member promotions. 6mo
Birdsong28 @AlaMich Thanks for replying. It's not on the UK as I'm a member and can't see it anywhere 📚📖 6mo
AlaMich @Birdsong28 no problem! 😊 6mo

I‘m not sure if the crack of dawn before work is the right time to begin this but I‘m going to try.

A semi-autobiographical story of a young Italian girl who volunteers at a labor camp in Germany to find out whether she has been fed lies about the Nazi regime.
