Bought this in an airport last year but didn‘t get to it until my #auldlangspine recs from @DebinHawaii I LOVED it. June, the narrator tries to justify stealing her dead friends manuscript & passing it off as her own. We see her narcissism, her ‘i‘m not racist but in first person which makes her awfulness also kind of captivating. A satire of sorts about publishing, social media & cancel culture. Compelling

DebinHawaii I read this for #CampLitsy over the summer & really enjoyed it for the reasons you mentioned. Compelling is a great word to describe it! 2mo

Since many of us are dissatisfied with the “real” #tob24 shortlist, your #CampLitsy counselors present #LitsyToB24! We‘ll use the longlist from the real tournament, but you will decide which 16 books go into the brackets. We‘ll provide more info about how judging and awarding the Turkey will work soon. For now, use this Google doc link to choose the books you‘d like to enter the tournament by 11 December! https://forms.gle/uKQCk4G5XU7qhErx8

Megabooks Thank you for the inspiration @Ruthiella ! One of us will be tagging people interested in previous ToB incarnations shortly, but as always, please let us know if you‘d like to be added to or removed from the tag list! 3mo
Ruthiella 🦃 instead of 🐓 ? I love it! Thanks so much to you and @squirrelbrain and @BarbaraBB for organizing! 3mo

The #tob24 shortlist is so disappointing!! I do want to remind those of us who are on the #completist side that US Spotify premium members get 15 hours of streaming audiobooks per month as part of membership. That‘s how I listened to Cold People and probably how I‘ll do this one and maybe Brainwyms 🤢🫣. Stay safe out there! 🤣

The shortlist: https://www.tournamentofbooks.com/the-2024-shortlist

squirrelbrain Blimey - I can‘t imagine listening to Brainwyrms on audio. Audio is why I bailed on Manhunt last year, and Brainwyrms is *much* worse. 😬 3mo

squirrelbrain And I‘m not being a completist this time - I‘ve fallen out with ToB! 🤣 3mo
Megabooks I will likely not read Brainwyrms @squirrelbrain 🤣🤣 and probably this one I‘ll tag because there‘s no audio and my library doesn‘t have the print. Hoopla has the ebook but I‘m so touchy with screens! The rest I‘ve read or can borrow from the library/spotify. So I guess I‘ll try. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️ 3mo
BarbaraBB I don‘t want to read Brainwyrms, nor the Emma Cline or the one about Melville and the mountain lion. What were they thinking?! I guess I‘ll skip our parallel tournament this year? @squirrelbrain 3mo
Ruthiella @BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain Maybe we can do an ALTERNATIVE ToB similar #CampLitsy ? Let‘s pick those books we DO want to read from the longlist. 3mo
Deblovestoread @Ruthiella I like the way you think! 3mo
kwmg40 @Ruthiella @BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain I love the idea of an alternative ToB! Maybe pick the best from the ToB list (since I still want to read at least some of the official list) and fill in with others from the longlist? 3mo
Hooked_on_books This is one that actually appealed to me from the longlist and I have it out from the library, so I‘ll definitely read it. I enjoyed being a completist last year, but I strongly expect not to bother trying to this year. Sounds like a have a lot of good company in that. 3mo
Hooked_on_books @Ruthiella I like this idea, too! 3mo
Megabooks I‘ve emailed the other #CampLitsy counselors to see what they think, but I don‘t expect to hear back until morning there at this point. Time zones! @BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain @Ruthiella @Deblovestoread @kwmg40 @Hooked_on_books 3mo
Chelsea.Poole Oh wow, just catching up with the shortlist. I‘m with everyone, disappointed with much of it 😔 3mo
Addison_Reads I was very surprised by the short list. I normally expect some upsets, but I don't really see any standouts on this list. 3mo
cariashley I really like the idea of our own parallel TOB! 3mo

Immediately intense, provocative. Exquisite and daring! I really did enjoy this odd ODD list of stuff about Melville and other literary darlings, all somehow intoxicated with Melvillocity, in some way or another. Got a tad wearying, perhaps in the same way as some Melville scholar yapping too much, but that isn‘t right. Like bafflement and then awe and then,… what?! I learned a lot, I laughed quite a bit, and I am glad that I‘ve read Moby Dick.👇

BkClubCare (If you know “enough about” Moby Dick, should be sufficient.) 4mo
BkClubCare I am trying to tag everyone but I can‘t get the copy/paste to work?! This/thus we need hashtags… #TobFOLLOWERs (edited) 4mo

BkClubCare @squirrelbrain - I can‘t seem to tag or copy/paste all the at-sign Litsians who might want to see this. How do you do it? 4mo
Megabooks Hey! I‘m just now listening to this, and as someone who has not read Moby Dick, I‘m not as enamored as you, but the writing is very good! 4mo
BkClubCare I heard that audio is NOT the best way to go with this - UNLESS, as the book is so evident— you want to share the interesting tidbits. Good luck. It‘s enough to know that Moby Dick is about chasing the whale and how much SO MANY (so many) people give it the GAN label. (GAN = Great American Novel) (edited) 4mo
Suet624 I always have trouble tagging these TOB postings. 4mo
Hooked_on_books This is one of a handful on the longlist that just didn‘t appeal to me at all. I‘ll give it a try if it makes the shortlist, but otherwise I don‘t plan to read it. It‘s great that it worked for you! 4mo
squirrelbrain I‘ve never read Moby Dick, and this is a difficult one to get hold of over here, so I may wait until the shortlist. 4mo
squirrelbrain I‘ve not add an issue with tagging anyone recently, although I know Litsy can be glitchy some (a lot!) of the time. Are you trying to tag on your main post - that‘s how I do it? Although when we do #camplitsy there are so many Littens to tag, we have a crib sheet and just copy and paste into the comments section. 4mo
BkClubCare @squirrelbrain TY, I am sure it is me 🤪 Thinking it should be easier makes it take twice as long. LOL 4mo
BkClubCare @Suet624 - soul sisters! 👯‍♀️ 4mo
BkClubCare @Hooked_on_books - 🥹 I didn‘t even look at what it was about. Nothin. If I get my hands on it, I try it. Crazy, huh? Tho, Bachelder as author gave me pause because I didn‘t really care for The Throwback Special, on the other hand, Haber is a poet so that intrigued me. ☺️ (edited) 4mo
BkClubCare @squirrelbrain - between the two of us, we might get them all sampled. (Probably not, I don‘t read that fast! But I was shocked to be the first to review this. 4mo
Hooked_on_books Quite frankly, I think that‘s a great way to be! 4mo

I‘m not sure I really got this, but I enjoyed reading it. The whole doppelgänger part just went right over my head. This was #7 in votes for #CampLitsy23, and I think our campers probably would‘ve helped me get it. Low pick.

Elsa, a piano virtuoso who was adopted at a young age by her instructor, broke down and left the stage. She travels through Europe trying to make sense of this breakdown until she is called to her instructor‘s deathbed.

squirrelbrain I really liked it, but not sure I understood it either! 🤦‍♀️ You‘re right - it would have been a great one for #camplitsy discussions. 4mo
BarbaraBB Still need to read it. Maybe it‘ll make it to the ToB! 4mo

I liked, but did not love this book. Read along with #CampLitsy in August.

It had a great premise: female MC is a Tina Fey-esque writer for an SNL-esque comedy sketch show whose insecurities continually sabotage a potential romance with a super-famous musician. Clearly inspired by the Pete Davidson/Ariana Grande or Colin Jost/ScarJo relationships, I was fascinated by that aspect of the plot, but the FMC‘s attitude/behavior was a huge turn off.
