I wanted to like this YA book set in Mexico that I read for #foodandlit but honestly I do not think it was very well written. It was a struggle to see and appreciate the main characters growth and there were many aspects of life that would have been better with more depth to the story. I think the complexity of living on the border was a great premise but the characters were mostly in likable. I forgot to take a picture of my Mexican food .

After all the cooking for Thanksgiving, I'm tired! I think reading in bed all weekend sounds like the perfect way to relax!
Planning to finish Gods of Jade and Shadow for #FoodandLit
And get started on Little Women

Thanks for hosting Andrew! 😊 #20in4

I finished the last crazy chapter of this magical realism story with breakfast this morning. I enjoyed the interweaving of the story with recipes and the descriptions of making the food which made it a perfect choice for #FoodAndLit. However, I did not enjoy the central love story at all, and I was disappointed in the ending although I knew what was coming from other reviews.

A beautiful, magical story of family, both born and found, in rural Mexico through the Spanish flu, the Mexican revolution, and Agrarian reforms. The first half dances through history with gorgeous prose, touches of magical realism, heart, heartache, and a refreshingly wry humour. The second half barrels towards the inevitable, breaks your heart to pieces, then stitches them together. Stunning.

This might be the last recipe I'll try for our #FoodandLit trip to #Mexico - Tacos al Pastor. I've had this recipe around for quite a while and thought, now is the perfect time to try it. It turned out nice, it's something different, not that well known, but nothing I'd say I'd make again.

Shiny-eyed Totem is curious about what everyone has planned for their 2022 reading challenges?

I‘ve been researching and listing all the possible challenges to join, but I‘m sure I missed a bunch! I‘ve decided 2022 will be the year I attempt ALL the #readingchallenges and ALL the #readathons, so please tag any you know of down below. If you‘d like to see some that I‘ve come across, here is my Pinterest board. https://pin.it/6Y7kiTi

mdm139 Did you know about #foodandlit. Each month is a different country. You read a book set in the country or by an author from the country and eat food from the country. I didn‘t see it on you Pinterest board. 2d
RaeLovesToRead 😻😻 I'm probably going to do PopSugar and Booked2022 and do my best to do AuthoraMonth here and there as I can! 😊 Used to do Bookriot Read Harder, but it's usually tougher to fit the prompts so will check it out and see if it looks doable.. 2d
Clwojick @mdm139 thanks for reminding me! I just grabbed the new country list and added it to my collection! 2d

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I think you've got all of mine: Booked, the 52 Book Club, Popsugar, Food & Lit, and then I'll do the Sunday Buddy Read, Author A Month, & maybe That's Classic when the books sound good. 2d
Clwojick @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick awesome list of challenges! 😀 1d

By now most of you know how much I love the Culture Smart series. I use them for almost every country visited with the #FoodandLit challenge. So now it was #Mexico and once again I could learn so much by listening to this audio book. I do prefer the audio book because then you also hear how certain words and names are spoken in each language. Highly informative and for everyday use, this book once again shows the strengths of this special series.

TheAromaofBooks Yay!! I've used several of these CultureSmart books as well since I saw you review them!! 3d
Jari-chan @TheAromaofBooks How great you like them, too! 😁 3d

This book of historical fiction is set in Linares, #Mexico. With subtle magical realism, it follows the life of Simonopio, the bees that swaddled him as a babe when he was born, and the family that found and raised him. Simonopio is mostly mute. born with a facial deformity (probably a cleft lip), causing some in his small Mexican town to believe him to be a demon & at least one wishing to kill him. ⬇️

Texreader Simonopio‘s godparents are landowners, who lovingly tend the land, with a number of sharecroppers and their families in a work-to-own arrangement. They rightfully fear Mexico‘s agrarian reforms that threatened to take their ancestral family‘s land and losing all they‘ve worked for. Simonopio, even as a small child, makes himself and his bees the family‘s protectors given his unusual skills to read nature ⬇️ (edited) 3d
Texreader and the future dangers that the family is to encounter over the years. It‘s an immense task for him, to which he‘s dedicated his life. This is his story and the story of his bees. The storytelling is mesmerizing. The narration was the best I‘ve ever listened to and this book is now a favorite I hope to read again and again. #foodandlit (edited) 3d
tpixie Great review. I remember reading about a book in which a boy was surrounded by bees all the time but I forgot which book it was! Thanks 😊 3d
Texreader @tpixie It‘s so awesome. I hope you love it 3d
