I could quote something on every page. This book is my jam! Let me set the connection, the coinky-dink: I‘ve just started A View of the Harbour by Elizabeth Taylor and a character is 20 yo, right after WWII, sitting in an upstairs room looking out the window at the town streets and then this book has this quote:
“Young Christine… Climbs up to the attic room where she has done so much reading and looks out the window.”

BkClubCare Hey @xicanti - this essay has many references to “Gabrielle Roy” (#TIL abt GR) 4d
xicanti @BkClubCare she was from here! I haven‘t read her yet, though. 4d

Megabooks Interested to see how much overlap we have. I have already read three (Devil, candy, sea) and own YM. I plan on reading either/or but don‘t have much interest in trust. I, too, was hoping for a few that were more far afield and that I‘d be getting fresh reads. @squirrelbrain @BarbaraBB I‘m getting more excited about camp litsy and what we might read! 1w
Megabooks Thanks for posting @BkClubCare !! 😁😁😁 1w
vivastory @Megabooks Now I'm curious. Between Devil, Candy & Sea..which is your favorite? 1w
Megabooks @vivastory sea for sure!! The other two were solid picks, but sea blew me out of the water! Sorry for the pun 😉😉 1w
vivastory @Megabooks Mandel has yet to leave you adrift 🌊🤣I hope to read it soon. The Glass Hotel is a favorite of the year, so if she tops that 🤯 1w

Hooked_on_books Thanks for posting! I‘m with @vivastory and am a little underwhelmed by this list. I‘m not particularly interested in the Darnielle or the Stuart, and I was planning to skip the Egan. So, um… yeah. I recently listened to Elizabeth Banks‘ podcast on Sex and it was RIGHT ON! So, I needed an audiobook and this popped up on my frontal view. So, why not? This is my first Mary Roach and I feel like I missed the train, or I should have read Stiff instead, or. I dunno. This was amusing but not earth-shattering. It felt… dated? But I learned a few things and I laughed a few times, YAY

CuriousG Personally I have enjoyed, but not loved, all of her books, with the exception of Stiff. I *loved* Stiff! I read it first though, so maybe the rest just couldn't live up to it? 1w

I think I read one too many reviews of this excellently-told, creatively-expressed, fascinatingly-built story within a story within another. I enjoyed it - but give yourself the time. And though this has horror described, I wouldn‘t call it “Horror” — it is more like fictional true crime. #readict

Photo upleft is a “devil house” of Tauy Creek KS and the other is a close up of #CoconutCreamPie for May8. #CaresPieShow

EvieBee Mmm. Question: does this in any way involve supernatural elements? That‘s the part of “horror” and are just a no-no for me. But the true crime aspect interests me. 2w
BkClubCare @EvieBee - nope, nothing supernatural other than investigating rumors of such. It is about a true crime writer trying to find the real truth through the rumor. (edited) 2w
EvieBee Awesome! I‘ll need to get on this asap. Thanks for the recommendation! 💙 2w

I finished 10 books in April, both #BookSpin (City of Girls), #DoubleSpin (Chouette), and 3 Bingos. City of Girls and Slow March were my favorites but all were enjoyable.

Three memoirs, two of which were connected. One essay collection. One fiction based on a true story. One kids book. Which means four fiction. I don‘t have a quick way to check how many mention pie. Oddly enough.

@Nutmegnc - what do you think of this layout? 🫤

Still reeling a bit, feeling off-kilter somewhat as I process thoughts and contradictions of what friendship means, what messy humans we are. What is truth? And beauty is subjective, not all art is beautiful. Your story is always yours to tell but what is the aim? Does it matter? Does the consumer of art participate in the motivations? Actions and consequences… Messiness and pain. Redemption.

This is best for readers not quite ready for their own Wintering experience or those interested in what such introspection overlay might mean. I thought I was going to be the perfect reader for this but, alas, no. I admire what Ramirez attempted here and am giving it a Pick over a So-so for this aim to give humanity to science history. But I was never transported and inspired; I had too high hopes, perhaps. Yet, she has a great #PieinLit mention and she drops in Perkins mauve color (NF book by Simon Garfield) so there's that. 👇
