Life with Picasso
Life with Picasso | Franoise Gilot, Carlton Lake
Francoise Gilot was a young painter in Pasis when she first met Picasso - he was sixty-two and she was twenty-one. During the following ten years they were lovers, worked closely together and she became mother to two of his children, Claude and Paloma. LIFE WITH PICASSO, her account of those extraordinary years, is filled with intimate and astonishing revelations about the man, his work, his thoughts and his friends - Matisse, Braque, Gertrude Stein and Giacometti among others. Francois Gilot paints a compelling portrait of her turbulent life with the temperamental genius that was Picasso. She is a superb witness to Picasso as an artist and to his views on art...

#Read2025 #MonthlyNonFiction #SheSaid

Finished this morning for #SundayBuddyRead this was a engaging memoir about an amazing woman. A gifted artist & writer, this book focuses on her time with Pablo Picasso & could be titled “Surviving Picasso” who was a giant ass hat man baby. It‘s hard to separate the frustration with the man from his art, but the real interest in book is Francoise‘s perspective on his art & her own. Thanks to the fabulous ⬇️

DebinHawaii … hosting & research of the wonderful Christine @thebookhippie the book was even better brought to life & I learned so much about Gilot & the other artists of the times. Therese background of this review is one of my favorites of hers, Paloma à la Guitare, a picture of her daughter Paloma. Truly a fascinating book. 1mo
TheBookHippie I loved it so much. 1mo

vlwelser That's a great painting. I really like her stuff. I was maybe a little surprised that she seems to have basically imitated other peoples styles for quite a while. But she was also 40 years younger than this creepy old man. I'm guessing this one is from later on. 1mo
DebinHawaii @vlwelser Sotheby‘s says it was painted in London in 1965. 1mo
vlwelser After she went on her own path. Good for her. I approve. 1mo

#sundaybuddyread Thank you @TheBookHippie for bringing this book to our attention!

I learned a lot about Picasso from this book. If he wasn't a famous artist, he would have been labeled a creeper. His art was amazing. The man himself was a narcissist man-baby. Gilot's writing flowed well, and I was absorbed into her story. I would have liked a book about her later years. Her personal evolution was fascinating. She grew so much.

mcctrish I can‘t believe how long we had to wait for her to leave!!! Every time she circled back to a moment before to add more details - she seemed to do that a bit more towards the end - I‘d be yelling what was the final straw!!! 1mo
Eggbeater @mcctrish I did a lot of yelling out loud throughout the book. 1mo

The Christmas tree has been procurred and set up. So that means my usual reading spot in the window is gone until after Epiphany. This book is just crammed with information; Picasso‘s artistic process, his relationships with women, fellow artists, his caustic, narcissistic gas lighting. I loved getting a glimpse of the artistic process, the artists P interacted with but I can‘t say I like Picasso at all #sundaybuddyread

kspenmoll Agree with your assessment!!!! 1mo

An enlightening look at the horror and brilliance of Pablo Picasso as told by his long time partner Francoise Gilot. She in herself is an amazing human and it seems because of that, she alone was able to survive the relationship with this monster. I didn‘t know much about him before reading this and wasn‘t a huge fan of his art anyway, but I‘ll definitely look at It differently moving forward. Read for #sundaybuddyread

kspenmoll Just my reaction to this novel too! Your review/description is just how I felt when finishing this book. 1mo
