I read the majority of this book in the bath with a Poseidon candle that smelt of sea, salt, and shipwrecks. It felt fitting.

This was a filler book. Not terrible, not great, moved the plot along and positioned the characters.

I don't buy new new books anymore. I'll always opt for second hand or from the library which is what I intended to do with the Trails of Apollo books but I found the book set cheaper new than second hand.

I enjoyed this a lot more than the first one. I found the trio much more compelling and the storyline interesting.

There are still some issues. It got repetitive, Riordan has some weird issues around femininity, and there were some racist and fatphobic comments.

This is a really fun story. London based urban fantasy following two cupids as their love matches turn deadly.

I enjoyed how different the world and afterlife was, the characters were all engaging, the romance was an organic slow burn, and it was the right level of humour for me.

PuddleJumper I did find it a little difficult to get into. The beginning was exposition heavy and quite slow. After that, it gets much better and I'm glad I stuck with it.

I have the final version and it still reads like a first draft. I wonder what the other version was like because this one still has pacing issues, typos, weird dialogue, and it's awkward to read.

It's very safe. Fake dating the bi hockey player because your shitty friends are trying to force you to date someone. But twist! You both have crushes on each other.

PuddleJumper Everything is just fine. No fall out from the game dating even though they both like each other and no real miscommunication. The friends are so shitty even NPCs agree.

It's low stakes, low angst, hea.

Someone watched Skam and thought they could do it in book form. It does not work.

I don't have the patience for toxic teenage friendship. There were too many characters, the MC had no personality, the relationship was forced and I was bored.

I might be in the minority but I wanted more d&d. With the title and the series name I was expecting more focus on the game or group of people brought together by it.

It did include that, but the majority of the book was them visiting each other's shops and talking. There's no tension, no plot, it's just a bit bland.

It's not a bad contemporary romance, it's just forgettable.

I don't think I've read a sapphic romance quite so centered around men before. It was odd, though that was the least of the issues.

It was very repetitive and neither character is likeable. There's some verbal abuse, biphobia (or what I'm interpreting as biphobia because lesbian with a preference for women … is a lesbian), physical assault, and some humiliation.

They should be running away from each other, not getting together.

February #2025Stats I'm saying the word search was my favourite book this month because I love word searches

Read 6 books off my shelf, I bought several books for work as they were very cheap second hand and I got 3 ARCs though didn't include them.

The 2 books I donated were ones off my shelf. It was the second and third in a series ... I didn't like the first one and I was never going to read the rest

The first ¾ of this book are very slow and then it speeds up at the end.

It's the recollections of a royal bastard starting from when he was very young. His memories become clearer as he becomes older, though not always.

Fitz is not a reliable narrator. Whether that is deliberate or because memories are fallible. It's interesting to grow alongside him and learn what he finds value in and the people and events that shaped him.

PuddleJumper It can be confusing at times because you're being introduced to this fantasy world and its fantasy politics through a man remembering his childhood.

Author Fitz does not include much context for the reader. I liked this. It felt authentic to the narrative and I can respect a character that is more interested in their dog's wellbeing than the favour currying at court especially when said character is a child.

4w
PuddleJumper That said, I do understand why some people find this book boring. Having re-read it for the first time in years, I think I would recommend people to start with the Liveship Traders trilogy which is much easier to get into even though they are chonky books!

PuddleJumper @Rachel.Rencher Liveship Traders are some of my favourite books. I do think they are more accessible than the Farseer Trilogy, maybe more traditional fantasy. I've just fished this and I had fun. It isn't without faults but I thought the fun I had overcame that

Some of the pages were really low res resulting in pixelated text. Usually in word searches if you have multiple words e.g John Winchester then they are written without spaces. This one would include an extra letter between the words which was annoying.

It's not perfect but if you're a fan then it's a bit of fun.

There was something very meditative about this book. I found a lot of joy in reading it and letting everything slow down.

The food descriptions were absolutely amazing. The ethos of minimising waste by using leftovers to create new dishes was really inspiring and there was a lot of love put into this aspect of the book.

⬇️

PuddleJumper I had not read earlier books in the series so I wasn't sure what to expect in terms of plot. There wasn't much of one. What there was, was not resolved at the end. It felt a little awkward. I would have liked a bit more to keep me engaged.

I really enjoyed it. It was a cosy, fantasy, slice of life that made me hungry and warm all at once.

This started off really well. I liked the setting, though it took me a while to remember who everyone was and their relationship to everyone else.

It started to drag about half way through. Plots were dropped (maybe to be explored in future books), the main couple got a bit repetitive, and the pace slowed down which was really felt.

Ancient slices of life found in cuneiform clay tablets. Each story is a stepping off point to delve into topics such as medicine, literature, and witchcraft.

This book does an amazing job of being accessible academia. What I mean by that is that it is academic level research and writing, written in a way that is engaging and accessible to people who aren‘t academics.

PuddleJumper The writing style suited the format; it was engaging and relevant without being dry or difficult to read. The chapters had a flow to them that kept me reading.

It neatly bridges modern to ancient, showing the similarities and differences with respect and understanding.

PuddleJumper I'm trying to navigate all this and work has become increasingly toxic. There's been some really petty and nasty behaviour that has really affected me

I'm trying to limit the time on my phone, on social media, and just in the online space in general. I'll still be around, I'm limiting my time which might mean I won't be liking everything or getting to comments quickly

1mo
PuddleJumper Litsy has always been a safe and supportive place for me. I want it to continue being that which means taking a little break

1mo
TiredLibrarian Enjoy your break. I hope you return rested and refreshed. ❤️ 1mo

The Taming of the Shrew | William Shakespeare
post image

So this is based on Taming of the Shrew/10 Things I Hate About You ... I'm guessing loosely since it's about assassins

Do I keep this for October or binge watch immediately. That is the dilema

Zuhkeeyah Binge watch! 1mo
janeycanuck Why not both?! 1mo
PuddleJumper @janeycanuck Oh that's true! It's not finished yet so I could wait 1mo

Pickpick

This was beyond cute! The characters themselves were adorable and there were a lot of different ones.

The instructions were clear, detailed, and easy to follow. This made it accessible to someone like me who doesn‘t draw.

The characters each had a unique description which would appeal to fantasy or D&D fans. I shared this with my D&D group who immediately wanted to draw their characters as cute creatures.

Thanks to #NetGalley the #ARC

AnnCrystal ✍️🤩💝💝💝 I LOVE Furries (anthropomorphic characters). (edited) 2mo

I really like Storygraph's wrap up graphics. I'm very tempted to ask for Plus for my birthday as I also want to support them

Ooo stats to excuse my complicated spreadsheet!

It‘s been a good month; I read 12 books that were either on my shelf or on my kindle. Some were eArcs but I‘m counting them

I donated 4 of the books I read including my DNF

I did buy 8 books but! That was some Rick Riordan books and some more danmei because I #ReadMyDamnDanmei and wanted the next in the series …

Favourite read was SVSSS Volume 1 (Yes, I bought the rest)

Ruthiella Oh! I really like this visual and way of keeping track of monthly reading and book inventory! 🤩 2mo

This year is going fast! February author is Akwaeke Emezi, have you decided what you are reading?

How did you find January's pick Malinda Lo?

flying_monkeys Hi @PuddleJumper is #QueerBC open to everyone to join? If yes, please add me to your tag list. I've been wanting to read Freshwater by Akwaeke Emezi for years, so that's what I'll read in February. 2mo
PuddleJumper @flying_monkeys Yep, it's open to everyone. You can join in as much as you like. Some people skip months if they aren't interested in the author for example. I'll add you to the tag list 2mo
Butterfinger I have Pet and The Death of Vivek Oji. 2mo
willaful The YA short story I read was meh. I have loved other books by her though. 2mo

It is nearly time to start reading Assassin's Apprentice!

This is running on Litsy and Storygraph and there are different ways you can get involved, or not get involved, it is all optional

#RealmofElderlings

Full information in the comments

PuddleJumper 1/7 It will run through February. There will be a mid-way check in and a final thoughts post here on Litsy. You can comment on them in your own time or create your own post

You don't need to start 1st Feb to join in the midway check in. Read when you want to read

PuddleJumper 6/7 I'm not going to run actual meetings. However, to populate the leaderboard (showing the highest rated books) everyone needs to join the meeting and rate the book before the end
2mo
PuddleJumper 7/7 I'll set the meeting for the last day in February. You can join whenever, I've already joined, and then when you rate the book it should show up in the meeting … I think

I'm interested to see how the leaderboard looks after reading the entire series!
2mo
Enchanted_Bibliophile So excited 🤩 2mo
Luke-XVX Thanks for doing this! I first read this trilogy over the pandemic recovering from having my appendix out. Read 50 pages, fall asleep as nauseam as I sat on the sofa haha 2mo
PuddleJumper @Enchanted_Bibliophile Same! I'm trying to finish my books off so I can start immediately 😅 2mo
PuddleJumper @Luke-XVX Not the easiest books to read when recovering! 2mo
Larkken Looking forward to this! I‘ve been loving the scifi book club here on Litsy and am excited to do a fantasy one, and one with a series at that! 2mo
willaful Well crap. 11 week wait at the library. 😭 2mo
willaful oh, but there's a paperback available now. Ugh, my eyes! 😂 2mo
PuddleJumper @willaful That's a long wait! Wonder why it's so popular all of a sudden 2mo

wanderinglynn Yay! Can‘t wait to start! 2mo
kelli7990 Yay! I‘m looking forward to reading this. I haven‘t started reading it yet but it‘s going to be the next book I start. I won‘t finish it this month but I want to at least start it. 1mo
PuddleJumper @kelli7990 Read at your own pace. Everything on SG will remain up so you should still be and to join in discussions, comments etc if you want to. I'm very slowly reading it. I haven't had a chance to sit down for more than 10 minutes at a time! 😅 1mo
