This book of five short stories set in the Sookie Stackhouse universe was actually enjoyable. With this author less is definitely more.

You could have knocked me over with a feather when it was revealed who the killer was. This is the fourth and final book in the Harper Connelly series. I enjoyed this series more than her Sookie Stackhouse series. There just were too many Sookie books and they were mediocre at best. I know that‘s an #unpopularopinion but it‘s mine and I‘m stickin‘ with it. (cont)⬇️

CatLass007 I like how this series answered all the pertinent questions but recognized that not everything can be wrapped up in a happily ever after bow. 6d
ravenlee The Sookie books started fairly well but very quickly petered out. I reread the series a couple years ago to finish it, but it was a real slog. 6d
CatLass007 @ravenlee I listened to the entire series. I‘m still not sure why. I guess it‘s because I‘ve always been a completist. It‘s not until the last few years that I learned to say that I wasn‘t enjoying myself and I could stop reading something. Then I could move on to the next book in my TBR. 6d
Blaire Oh I‘ll check out this series. I read all the sookie ones even though the last few were terrible but I really liked the first several. They were my maternity leave reads years ago. 5d
CatLass007 @Blaire Go for it. I hope you enjoy the series. 5d

I‘ve been calling this series a “cozy” urban fantasy, and I stand by that description for the first two books. There is nothing cozy about this book. The violence is more graphic and there is a sexual relationship between two consenting adults. That said, I definitely think this a good continuation of the series and I would recommend it to anyone who is not too squeamish.

https://www.upworthy.com/amp/wil-wheaton-shares-how-to-separate-art-from-problem... This is a link to an Upworthy article discussing Wil Wheaton‘s response to a question on Tumblr about separating the artist and their art. I can think of at least four creative people to whom this applies: JK Rowling, Joss Whedon, Kevin Spacey, and Bill Cosby. Food for thought…

TrishB He‘s definitely talking about Morrissey and The Smiths too. I struggled for a long time listening to them, then decided the same- there are 3 other band members 🤷‍♀️ 1w
TrishB We have to take individual decisions on these things I guess. 1w
WJCintron Thanks so much for sharing! 🙏😃 I‘ll take a look ASAP! 1w
See All 19 Comments
CatLass007 @TrishB I‘ve heard of the Smiths but I know very little about them. I agree that individual decisions regarding “problematic artists” are important. Also important is that we have the freedom to make our own decisions. Pressure from either side to conform to their point of view should not influence our decisions. People of all ages and backgrounds still are subject to peer pressure. 1w
CatLass007 @WJCintron I hope you find it helpful. 1w
TrishB Agree totally. I try to make my own mind up about most things. But divisor media/societal expectations are very real. 1w
WJCintron @CatLass007 Yes! It was a good article. 🙌 As an author, screenwriter & artist myself & having a son who‘s an actor & we both work in the entertainment industry here as filmmakers in Los Angeles, CA, I know you NEED to be a shark in order to live & not die in the water. This industry IS a sea of sharks. Not easy by any means. BUT u should never take others down with you. Art should never harm but elevate. Personal opinion. 1w
WJCintron Unfortunately, when someone who‘s part of a team does something wrong and it leaks to the public, it does harm the whole team. It‘s unfair, but it always happens. It‘s SO EASY to ruin someone‘s reputation in the entertainment industry. That‘s why you see so many that don‘t even talk or are always alone cause unfortunately true friends in these waters are very hard to find. 1w
WJCintron That‘s why when I hear or know about someone like JK Rolling, who was so respected & such an example & inspiration to many, keep making such comments, it angers me. Cause it damages the image of so many even when it‘s not fair. The industry as a whole doesn‘t care. They only care about image & money. She killed the image like so many others do. And here we are, trying to be the best version of ourselves, overworking for a dream. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 1w
CatLass007 @WJCintron That‘s all any of us can do. Be the best version of ourselves. A lot of people don‘t even know who their best selves are. They‘re the ones who become sharks. 1w
WJCintron @CatLass007 I agree with you 💯% ! 🙏 1w
Bette Thanks very much for this. It really helped me. 1w
CatLass007 @Bette I‘m glad it helped you. That‘s why I posted it. I know it‘s an issue with which so many people struggle. Who to believe and how to respond. I think we‘re put here to help each other as much as we can. 1w
LiteraryinLawrence I really appreciate Wil‘s perspective. Thanks for sharing! 1w
CatLass007 @LiteraryinLawrence I‘m glad you found it edifying. I know I did. I see the picture of your kitty. What‘s her name? (I have this weird way of thinking that all cats are female and all dogs are male. 🙀 Of course, that‘s biologically impossible. And two of my four cats are male.) 1w
Deblovestoread Thanks for sharing. It really brings clarity to the conundrum of this issue. 1w
CatLass007 @Deblovestoread You‘re welcome. Conundrum is the perfect word to describe the situation. 1w
LiteraryinLawrence @CatLass007 The one in my profile picture is my furry boy Fitz, but I also have 2 girls (Zoe and Emmie). They are the best reading buddies! 1w
CatLass007 @LiteraryinLawrence Sweet! I listen to a lot of audiobooks and my kitties are fine company. Unless I actually want to look at my phone screen. Then they get pretty jealous. Listening to a book is okay, talking on the phone is okay, but looking at my phone to choose a book or turn the sleep timer on or off, that‘s a definite no-no. 1w

The Sandman: An Audible Original | Neil Gaiman, Dirk Maggs

Pickpick

I bought this audiobook when it was first released in 2020. I was experiencing a lot of loss and upheaval at the time so I didn‘t actually start listening to it until Act II was released in 2021. I didn‘t get very far. I felt that the music and sound effects were too distracting. I was disappointed because I‘m a huge Neil Gaiman fan. But I wasn‘t completely surprised because it was based on a comic book series. (cont)

CatLass007 How could such a visual medium be translated to one that is a completely audio medium? When I tried to return it to Audible, I had passed the one year limit. This month I decided to try to listen to it again. I really enjoyed it. Sometimes the music was too loud, the way a TV commercial is too loud, so I‘d deduct points for that. But over all, it‘s definitely a pick. (edited) 1w

CatLass007 @5feet.of.fury Good to know that you too are an ailurophile. I don‘t think anyone has ever given me a nickname. In the 5th grade a friend called me Booby Bond, but that didn‘t stick, thank God. My Dad gave me a whole slew of nicknames when I was growing up: Clem Kadiddlehopper (after the Red Skelton character), Clem, Clementine. None of those stuck either. My first two years of college, my friends in chorus had a running joke about me, (cont)⬇️ 1w
CatLass007 “Stand up, Jane.” Which prompted the inevitable “I am standing.” But no nickname. At one job back in the early nineties, the Director of our department gave everyone a nickname. Except me. He‘d just walk by my desk and say “Bond,” in his best Sean Connery voice. I never really thought of that as a nickname because it is my name. When I joined a Fiber Arts group about 10 years ago, the instructor for the group was a woman named Jane and, (cont)⬇️ 1w
CatLass007 at the time, that Jane was co-teaching an art therapy class with another woman named Jane. In order to distinguish the two, students chose to give them nicknames, Fiber Jane and Art Jane. When I joined the Fiber Arts group, they tried to call me Crochet Jane, but not even that nickname stuck. Everyone just started calling me by my first and last names as if it was all one word, that did stick. And, now that I think of it, that‘s what (cont)⬇️ 1w
CatLass007 some people started calling me at the job where everyone seemed to get a nickname. I still can‘t decide if it‘s a nickname. Hmmm… 1w
WJCintron I LOVED it!! 1w
CatLass007 @WJCintron I‘m glad 😀 I really enjoyed it when I decided to take a chance and give it another try. Before I tried starting to listening to it a second time, I thought of how Mom talked about listening to old time radio shows. She loved them! So that‘s how I started thinking of The Sandman Audible adaptation. Thanks, Mom. 1w
WJCintron @CatLass007 😃🙌 He‘s amazing! 1w
CatLass007 @WJCintron Neil Gaiman has been a favorite of mine for years. I‘m still not sure how JK Rowling got away with ripping off Gaiman‘s Books of Magic. But that‘s another post. 1w
WJCintron @CatLass007 Agree! She broke my heart into so many pieces. 😢😭 She was an inspiration to me as a writer. I thought of her as such a strong woman. Now I don‘t even want to see her name. Funny how easy someone can disappoint us to the point of no return. Right? 1w
CatLass007 @WJCintron Right. My favorite actor used to be Kevin Spacey. One of my favorite writers/producers for TV and movies was Joss Whedon. And my brother and I grew up with Bill Cosby. I saw an article a while back in which Wil Wheaton discussed separating a problematic artist from their art. I‘ll look it up and if I find it, I‘ll share it in a separate post. I can‘t remember all the content. (edited) 1w

I read this book when it first came out. A friend of mine who is Black sent me his copy. He said that he thought the author was racist against Black people and wanted my opinion. I‘m not exactly the best person to ask about that since I‘m white, but he trusted my judgment. I remember thinking that Verghese seemed to dislike his own brown skin. At the time he wrote this book he was living in the same town in which I now live. (cont)⬇️

CatLass007 My Mom worked at the VA at the same time he did. He even came to the VA when he was doing his book tour so Mom and I went to hear him speak. It is a fascinating book. And the only fault I really had with it was that Watauga was misspelled throughout the book as Watagua. I don‘t know if it was something he misremembered or if was an editing error. But it annoyed me. (cont)⬇️ 2w
CatLass007 I know he has a new work of fiction out now and I can‘t decide whether to read it or not. And if I do read it do I need to read his first work of fiction before I read his new one? 2w

The Handmaid's Tale | MARGARET. ATWOOD

I think today is a day for another #unpopularopinion I read The Handmaid‘s Tale when it was first published. Actually, I only tried to read it. If I had known what #DNF meant back then that‘s what I did. It seems like everyone thinks this is one of the greatest books ever written. I understand that it was groundbreaking. It seems more prescient now than ever. But I just didn‘t like the book. I‘ve never read another #MargaretAtwood book. (cont)⬇️

CatLass007 But I‘ve been thinking about giving her another try sometime this year. So I am requesting recommendations. #TheBlindAssassin is what I‘m leaning toward right now. 2w
Prairiegirl_reading I have heard the blind assassin is her best. I tried edible woman way back when and swore I‘d never read another but I read oryx and crake a few years ago and I liked that. It‘s pretty dark though. Dystopian. It‘s the first in a trilogy. I liked it enough to continue the series even though I ended up thinking it was the best of the three. 2w
SaunteringVaguelyDownwards I think Handmaid's Tale feels a lot more stilted than much of Atwood's other work because she's writing it as if it were the recovered manuscripts being debated at an academic conference many years after the fact. I agree that Blind Assassin and Oryx and Crake are closer to her normal storytelling style. 2w
See All 23 Comments
CatLass007 @Prairiegirl_reading @SaunteringVaguelyDownwards Thank you for your comments and opinions. I value the thoughts and thoughtfulness of all my Litsy friends. 2w
TheKidUpstairs What kind/genre of books do you generally lean towards? One of the things I love about Atwood is that she writes in so many different genres, so even if some of her books don't work for you, it doesn't mean that none of them will! A few of my favourites: Alias Grace (historical fiction), Oryx and Crake (dystopian society/speculative fiction), The Robber Bride (literary fiction about complicated friendships), The Penelopiad (mythology retelling). 2w
TheKidUpstairs @Prairiegirl_reading I did the same thing, with the exact same books! I hated Edible Woman and thought I just didn't like Atwood. Until a friend forced Oryx and Crake into my hands and I read it in a weekend! 2w
Daisey I didn‘t enjoy The Handmaid‘s Tale either, but I‘m more of a historical fiction reader and really enjoyed Alias Grace. 2w
CatLass007 @TheKidUpstairs I like almost all genres. I don‘t really care much for romance when it‘s the only focus of the book. I outgrew Barbara Cartland, Danielle Steele, and Harlequin Romance when I was still in high school. I‘ve even enjoyed the occasional Western (anything by Robert B Parker is an automatic read and even re-read, I tried some of the authors with whom the estate contracted, and they were a disappointment). SFF, mystery, biography… 2w
CatLass007 Also, what exactly is speculative fiction? It all seems like science fiction to me. I think dystopian fiction is just a sub-genre of science fiction. Okay, I confess, I‘m old and out of touch. 😆 2w
TheKidUpstairs @CatLass007 LOL, it does seem like so many different ways to say the same thing, doesn't it! Yes, I think speculative fiction is another sub-genre of science fiction. I guess I think of it as “If the science being done now continues to its possible conclusion, this is where we could end up“. If that makes any sense. One of those things I don't really know the definition of, but I know it when I read it 😆 2w
TheKidUpstairs @CatLass007 None of her books (that I've read) really focus on romance as the main storyline, which is nice. Her more contemporary (well, contemporary to the time she wrote them) literary fiction works tend to focus more on relationships between friends and family - The Robber Bride and Cat's Eye are two of my favourites for that. Alias Grace is my all time number one (historical fiction with an unreliable narrator thrown in). 2w
TheKidUpstairs Unpopular Opinion: I did not like Blind Assassin. I know lots of people who loved it, but it just didn't do it for me, and I'm not sure it's one of her more accessible works (not that that's necessarily a bad thing) 2w
CatLass007 @TheKidUpstairs Thanks for the, not a definition, more like a connotation. I wasn‘t really referring to romance in Atwood‘s books. Just romance in general, e.g. Bridgerton. 2w
CatLass007 And I don‘t really care for anything with zombies. I tried listening to Peter Clines‘s Ex-Heroes and I was quite disappointed. At least Audible has a return policy. 2w
CuriousG Alias Grace is good, and I also liked Oryx and Crake 2w
CuriousG One of my favourites that never gets discussed is HagSeed. It is a contemporary take on The Tempest. 2w
KathyWheeler @CuriousG You‘re right! I never realized that HagSeed rarely gets discussed when Atwood‘s work is talked about, but I loved it. 2w
CatLass007 @CuriousG @KathyWheeler I‘ve never seen HagSeed mentioned in any discussion of Atwood‘s work. I think I‘d remember that title. 2w
KathyWheeler @CatLass007 There‘s a series of books by Hogarth Press that are modern takes (very loosely) of Shakespeare plays. HagSeed is Atwood‘s contribution to that series. 2w
CatLass007 @KathyWheeler I noticed that when I looked up the book on Audible. I guess I‘ll have to add them to the infinite wish list. 2w
rwmg If you're uncertain about Atwood, I would definitely recommend the Penelopiad (a re-telling of the Odyssey) because it's short.

My understanding is that speculative fiction is a catch-all term to cover science fiction, fantasy, superhero, and supernatural/paranormal fiction, and probably other genres/subgenres as well.
2w
CatLass007 @rwmg I looked at the Penelopiad and I enjoy mythology so it‘s something I‘m considering. Last year I listened to both Circe and The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller. Both were excellent. 2w
SaunteringVaguelyDownwards @CatLass007 Speculative fiction is an umbrella category to describe genres where the narrative is generated by speculation. It includes science fiction (what would the world look like in the future if...?), fantasy (what would the world look like if magic/dragons/witches/etc existed?), and historical fiction (what would the world be like if X event had been different?) 2w

I‘ve only seen the first episode of #TrueBlood, or maybe only part of it. It‘s been a while. I actually listened to the entire (cont)⬇️

CatLass007 series on Audible. I was just getting into audiobooks and really didn‘t know the quality of what was available. I‘m not sorry I listened to the series but its not something I would re-listen. Ilona Andrews, Jim Butcher, Faith Hunter, and Patricia Briggs all do Urban Fantasy so much better. But, this is about the book I just finished, not something else. Grave Sight is more of a “cozy” Urban Fantasy, if I could use such a description. 2w
mcipher I 100% agree on Sookie - I read the first and just felt meh. I think I read this one and felt the same way, but glad you enjoyed it!! 2w
CatLass007 @mcipher Thank you. I was having some difficulty settling on a book. I kept moving from one to another until I landed on this one. I think it‘s necessary to be in a certain frame of mind to read some books. 2w
Bookzombie I listened to these on audio. I really enjoyed them and have relistened to them. I wish she wrote more than 4. 2w
CatLass007 @Bookzombie Actually, I kind of like that she only wrote four. The Sookie Stackhouse series was much too long. But I haven‘t read the last two books yet, so maybe I‘ll want more after all. 2w

I read this book five years ago as part of #whodunitthesequel. I‘m listening almost exclusively to audiobooks now and the first and second books of the series currently are free with membership on Audible. When I decided to listen to listen to this book, I couldn‘t remember a thing I‘d read, which is pretty unusual for me. I found my Litsy post from five years ago and I liked the book. CatLass007 Listening to it now is as if I‘d never read it at all. It‘s kinda nice. And kinda scary. My mom had Alzheimer‘s and that‘s how she was with her favorite TV show, NCIS. OK, this is not really a quote, it‘s a paraphrase. And I need help figuring out what the exact quote is and who said it. I don‘t even know if it‘s a real quote or if it‘s something I imagined. “Man plans, God laughs.” I know that you, all my Litsy friends, must know the origin of this. I believe there‘s another similar quote, “Man proposes, God disposes.” I may have imagined both of these quotes. Or, I‘m really off-base in my paraphrase.

CatLass007 Something tells me, although I could be totally off base about this, that the first paraphrase or quote or whatever, was written by Terry Pratchett in one of his books. And again I may be completely off base, but it seems to me that the other one is from the old testament. 1y

I recently saw on Facebook a list of banned books. I do not know the source of this list, but I‘m posting. Is anyone organizing a banned book group or club or whatever? It doesn‘t have to be from this list. I live in East Tennessee, probably the most backward place in the country. In Middle Tennessee there‘s big hullabaloo about banning, even burning, books. The school board pulled MAUS by Art Spiegelman from the middle school curriculum.

'Salem's Lot | Stephen King

I have not been active in Litsy for some time. I‘m going to try to remedy that. I signed up for two buddy reads four-ish years ago. I bought a lot of hardcover and softcover books by Stephen King for the #losersclub. I also signed up for the Terry Pratchett read along. I‘m not sure why, but I quickly lost interest in the Pratchett books. Around the same time, we had a couple of deaths in the family, both of my parents passed. Continued…

CatLass007 2) I never started reading any of the King books, so it was easy to know where to start. Last month, I read CARRIE, the first book on the list. I was unimpressed, although I remembered liking it in junior high. But that was over 40 years ago. I am now reading ‘SALEM‘s LOT, which I believe I read in high school. I remember enjoying it considerably more than the first book, and it was the same case this time. (Continued) (edited) 1y
CatLass007 1) When when each of my parents passed, y‘all were extremely supportive and I am grateful. You never get over that kind of grief, but it does become manageable over time. After mom‘s passing, it became necessary to prepare our house to sell. That meant packing up oodles of boxes, including all those Stephen King books I had. Towards the end of 2021, I decided I would listen to everything in audiobook format because that‘s all I read now. (Cont.) (edited) 1y
CatLass007 3) I have a question. The list for the #LosersClub ends with THE OUTSIDER. Is there another list that I just can‘t find for the books he‘s written since that list was compiled. I‘m trying to work out a personal schedule for myself. Thanks for any help you can give. 1y

DGRachel @CatLass007 I‘m so sorry for your losses, but welcome back. I no longer run Losers Club, and I‘m not tagged in any of the posts, so I don‘t know if the new hosts expanded the list. I did not. 1y

BarkingMadRead So sorry for your loss! I can add you to put tag list for the #losersclub if you aren‘t currently on it. I haven‘t updated the list since I took over, we are currently on Wolves of the Calla and we won‘t get to the new books for a long time! 1y
CatLass007 @BarkingMadRun I am on the list for the #LosersClub. I appreciate that you tagged me in the most recent notification a couple of weeks ago. I forgot that @DGRachel had handed over the reins. Thank you both for reminding me. I will look up orderofbooks.com as @Crazeedi suggested. 1y
CatLass007 Thank you all for your sympathy wishes. You don‘t know how much I appreciate the friends I have made on Litsy. 1y

This is a reread of a charming book. It is based on a true story but many of the characters are fictionalized. Some of these characters have become famous, the Lady Chablis, being the most familiar to many. I give this five out of five stars. Definitely a pick.

Apparently, I read this a few years ago because audible says I finished it. I remember nothing about it except for midway through there was a murder that seems vaguely familiar. I needed a break from everything, though, and I thought I‘d reread it because I love the title. It was just the right break from the lousy things that have happened in the last week. Things have improved this week, fortunately. And I finished the book. Again.

CatLass007 It made me laugh in a few places, which was just what I needed. My lost kitty returned home after a week at large. Various and sundry other good things have happened today too. They don‘t quite make up for the pipe bursting in my guest bath, and my best friend being in hospice care, but at least they‘ve lightened my mood. I‘ll give this book a pick at 3 1/2 stars. 3y

First of all, I don‘t recommend listening to the audiobook, as the narrator is terrible. However, I was able to make my way through the book and, for the most part, enjoyed it. I had expected this to be a bit of a “Dexter Junior,” and it did start out that way. But 1/3 to 1/2 way through the book, it became a horror novel. The difference was jarring. I wish it had been one way or the other. 3 1/2 out of five stars.

#whodunitthesequel

CatLass007 @Mollyanna I will get this out to you, hopefully Friday, 4 October. 4y
Mollyanna Thanks. I‘ll keep an eye out for it. 4y
