Bailedbailed

I listened to this book for an hour, and that was all I could bear. I kept waiting for it to become interesting and it just didn‘t. #HailTheBail #BetterBooksAhead

I don't get the hype or why this even has a mainstream publisher. Was it popular on Booktok or something? You can find better self-published books on KU. Dark? Please, there's zero depth or emotional attachment so it doesn't feel dark. Romantic? The courtship is more painful than the torture scenes. Comedy? A light tone and irrational characters isn't enough to make it funny.

#HailTheBail

julesG I'm glad I gobbled it up on audio, this way I didn't notice the shortcomings. 😁 1w
Leniverse @julesG Hah, yes I can see how good narrators might make a difference. 1w
monkeygirlsmama I enjoyed this one in #audiobook format despite it not being my typical genre. I agree that the narrators definitely helped bring it home for me. 1w

Definitely in the minority on this book, but I lost interest halfway through. I didn‘t connect with any of the characters and the “I don‘t like this” vibes started to outweigh the “I love this!” vibes. #HailtheBail 🚀

Aims42 @dabbe The #hailthebail hashtag is so empowering 😁💕 I started a new book and already it‘s a better fit 2mo
IndianBookworm Just finished the book, it's decent but even I do not get the hype! (edited) 1mo

Aims42 @IndianBookworm Right?! I found myself thinking of anything else but reading, I even thought of doing laundry instead! That was my “lightbulb moment” to pick a different book 😆 1mo
IndianBookworm @Aims42 what an epiphany! 😂 I think it'd be a great movie though, lots of characters, beautiful setting and events, and less PREACHY❤ 1mo
Aims42 @IndianBookworm Oh man, I don‘t even know if I made it to the preachy parts 🤣🤣🤣 I bailed during the bachelorette “seminar”. It could be a great movie though, I could definitely see some actresses in the role of Phoebe and Lila 1mo
IndianBookworm @Aims42 hahaha, I think you passed a few but the frequency increased a lot more towards the end! 😓 1mo
Aims42 @IndianBookworm Oof 🫠 Okay, glad I bailed when I did then 😆😮‍💨 1mo

Bailing 100 pages in. Scalzi is always hit or miss for me. I love the idea of this book - the moon has, in an instant, turned to cheese and no one knows why or how it what is next. Scalzi uses interviews, news reports and (for me) way too many pov. The book is creative but I have been sitting here for the last 40 or so pgs wishing I was reading Blake Crouch's Project Hail Mary instead so I am going to stop now

TheSpineView I get that with Scalzi. Loved Project Hail Mary! 2mo
ChaoticMissAdventures @TheSpineView Scalzi writes women WAY better, but this one is so scattered, and at 100 pages you never hear from the same person twice, I think I just want something more tightly told then this. And impossible space missions just reminded me of how much I loved PHM. 2mo

After 43 days, I am calling it. I can‘t push myself any further. I tried the digital arc that I received, then I added the audio, then I added a print copy, in hopes that I would be able to push thru. I love this period of US History, but the slow meandering plot just did me in. Also, at this part of the book, some things were added to the story that I felt just slowed it down further and didn‘t make sense with where things were going. I read 👇🏻

intothehallofbooks the last few chapters and, honestly, I wish I‘d have stopped trying weeks ago. Many people love this one, so don‘t take only my word for it. It just sadly wasn‘t the book for me. Thanks to Knopf for allowing me to read this one. I love Dust Bowl stuff and it stinks that this one didn‘t work out for me. 2mo

bookaholic1 At least you tried right..there's alot of books to read out there than continue reading one you can't get into 2mo
intothehallofbooks @dabbe @bookaholic1 I should have bailed sooner! 2mo
intothehallofbooks @Ruthiella I was curious about her other books before trying this one, but now I don‘t think I‘ll be picking them up 😬 2mo
dabbe @intothehallofbooks Well, next time a book doesn't hit you in just the right way, #hailthatbail and get outta there! 🤣😍🤩 2mo
Aims42 Thank you for the honesty. I was next in line on my library‘s wait list for this, but it does not sound like what I want to read right now. I canceled my hold, hopefully the person behind me is excited now 😄 2mo
intothehallofbooks @Aims42 You can always go back to it if the mood strikes you! 2mo
Aims42 @intothehallofbooks That‘s exactly what I thought too 😁👍 2mo

This is a DNF for now. I do hope to come back to it, but I‘m feeling a reading slump and dense fantasy is just not working for me right now. I‘ll probably come back to this in the summer, but off the TBR for now. #hailthebail #bookspinbingo!

every boy should stop reading a book as soon as he finds that he does not like it, just as you are not expected to eat more mutton than you want to eat.

It‘s a 100 pages in and I feel like this story has made no progress. Alice is still in the hospital and still doesn‘t remember anything. I‘m bored, I‘m over it , I‘m out!

I sat for nearly 30 minutes critiquing this book instead of enjoying the read. When I realized what I was doing, I had enough. 100+ pages in and I'm done. DNF

Just didn't buy the 2 main characters and honestly, it really came across as a couple of guys writing a thriller, paint by number style. Just doesn't work and I've bailed.

Reading slumps are pretty rare for me, but when they hit, they hit hard. I used to try and power through them. Just push through with whatever book I‘m feeling stuck on, but I‘m trying to be better at not shaming myself for bailing on books that aren‘t working for me.

Worst cases, I go back to an old childhood favorite and do a reread. Remind myself what made me fall in love with reading.

#SundayFunday Have a great day, & remember to tag me!

Aims42 I do a re-read of a favorite book too and that usually helps 😊 4mo
flying_monkeys @BookmarkTavern Yep, it‘s re-reads for me too. Currently battling a slump myself. Went with a favorite from my high school days. 🤓 4mo
sherrisilvera I typically switch to a "faster" read like a graphic novel or middle grade book. 4mo
