Now its fate may rest on the shoulders of one lonely refugee. Alina Starkov has never been good at anything. But when her regiment is attacked on the Fold and her best friend is brutally injured, Alina reveals a dormant power that saves his lifea power that could be the key to setting her war-ravaged country free. Wrenched from everything she knows, Alina is whisked away to the royal court to be trained as a member of the Grisha, the magical elite led by the mysterious Darkling. Yet nothing in this lavish world is what it seems. I‘ve been meaning to read this trilogy for YEARS. Finally got around to it, and I‘m loving it! The world-building is fantastic, and the writing is giving me ADSOM vibes (my favorite YA fantasy series. Moving straight on to the 2nd book.

Loved the show. Book is good and gives more background into the friendship of Mal and Alina, but it really gives no insight into the character of the Darkling, which seems unbalanced. Frankly, after reading more about the rulers of this world, I am kind of rooting for him anyway. Can't be worse than the kings! 😀 The Dregs, my favorite characters from the show, are absent as they are actually from another book.

Shadow and Bone was a pretty good book in my opinion. It's about a girl named Alina Starkov becoming a Sun summoner and trying to get rid of the Fold, a dark and dangerous gash that cuts through the center of the country.
If you enjoy books with some fantasy magic elements and intense fight scenes, then you may enjoy the Kane Chronicles by Rick Riordan. It's centered around Egyptian mythology and is pretty funny in some parts.

MissYaremcio Thank you for the review Rowan! I was just looking for the theme and how it is established! I'm glad you enjoyed the book! 4/6 3mo

Fast-paced from the start while still world-building, the book was hard to put down. The characters were complex and well-developed.

Loved this book! I wish I would have read it prior to reading the Six of Crows duology lol, but I hadn‘t realized this trilogy existed. Trying to get through the books before starting the Netflix Series. Because of what I already knew about the lore, I wasn‘t shocked by the plot, but it was entertaining nonetheless. Super easy read, devoured it in a night. I‘m a sucker for the world building. 5/5⭐️

I first read this book when I was in high school, and I HATED it then. It was after I‘d read Six of Crows, and I went in expecting that and came away with half-assed love triangle romances and some semblance of a plot. Now, as an adult, I reread it and its still not great, but my hatred isn‘t as vehement.

Book 1 in a trilogy; fantasy. Alina has a secret that even she doesn't know-not really. It's a revelation she's suppressed until it's unleashed in desperation. It's a secret that will change the world. Well written, imaginative. I'm looking forward to book 2 and 3. I might even watch the Netflix original series.

So.... this week I've been down with a nasty sinus infection (I get them every year at this time, like an unfriendly reminder of my mortalit- okay, I'll stop being dramatic 😅) and committed the cardinal sin of binging Shadow & Bone on Netflix without having read any of the books (I did this with the Witcher, too, although I'd played the games before). Now I've just finished this one, and onto the next, and I kind of like the TV one better. 🤷‍♀️

jessjess This is not to say that I hate this book, just I was expecting to read the Six of Crows cast in this and they aren't (obvs.) Which on the one hand, great move for the TV fans but on the other hand now means I have to read that book, as well... which isn't really a bad thing, to be fair! 😅 Well, I am heading back to bed as I'm on all the pain relief and cold meds I could take, and am now blissfully unaware and uncaring of the world, go team 6mo
rsteve388 So I am currently in the middle of Six of Crows and I don't know what it is but I like it better than Shadow and Bone I think because the writing feels more mature. 6mo

I like the concepts of the ‘small science‘ magic. I also like the main character. But some parts were pretty cringy to me, like having a 120 year old man manipulate a teenager to fall in love with him.

It was entertaining, it was easy to keep turning pages. I like to know what the kids are reading these days, ya know? (Or adults, nothing wrong with adults reading YA).

I watched the show right after. Yup, book was better ☀️

rjsthumbelina To be fair, Bardugo says that she didn't intend for him to be a heart throb. It's supposed to be an representation of an abusive relationship 🤷‍♀️ 8mo
AFrostCauseReads @rjsthumbelina Huh, didn't know that. I can see that from an outside perspective, but through Alina's POV there was no hesitation or turmoil to being with him until she realized he was the bad guy. Don't get me wrong, the book needed it for plot reasons, but it was very reminiscent of Twilight. The audience knows it's bad, but the character sure doesn't. Maybe that was her intention? It‘s been a long time between drinks when it comes to YA fantasy for me (a lengthy hangover from my English teacher life). But the most recent lockdown in NZ called for some real escapism. Shadow and Bone was everything I wanted it to be. There is some quality world-building with an undemanding, pacy plot. It‘s definitely the first in a trilogy, in that it‘s very much a “set up” novel, but I‘ll be diving into the next one soon.

Pruzy I‘m reading Ninth House by Bardugo now and it‘s so, so good! Any idea how this one compares to it? As in, if I like Ninth House will I like this book? 9mo

Another July #bookspinbingo book - this one is my #doublespin .
Finished this a couple of days ago. While reading this book, I was reminded at varying points of Harry Potter, City of Bones, and Twilight. ⬇️

Vanessa So, with all this similarity to books I‘ve already read, why would I call it a “pick”? Because it still has originality, and it‘s so fun that I was mad I didn‘t have the second book on hand to start immediately (and I‘m vacationing in a place where I can‘t get it from a bookstore). My YA-loving students are going to eat this one up.

I decided to read the book before watching the show. I don't know if that was a smart decision or not because now I have a lot of expectations for the show.

The book was good, a little predictable, but it keeps you hooked on every word. I second guessed everything because everyone was so mysterious. At times I felt like the book was a mystery because information was always being held back.

i.besteph I read the book after watching the series. I couldn‘t help it 😂🤷🏽‍♀️ But I‘d prefer the other way around as the show is a mix of two series, shadow and bone and (edited) 10mo

Why did I wait so long to read this book? I‘m not much of a fantasy reader. I‘d like to read more of the genre, but sometimes I have a hard time with the world building aspects of fantasy. This one was perfect because it wasn‘t too hard to follow what was happening and I felt like once the story started developing, my understanding fell into place. The first book of Shadow and Bone was an okay read, it has a lot of story line that wasn't in the TV series. The big parts of the book were in the TV series so it's mostly true to the book. But the story has some.moments where it lags and feels like filler. An okay read 3.5 stars.

I‘m a newbie to the Grishaverse and I wasn‘t disappointed!
Netflix did a great job adapting this. I loved reading this and watching the series at the same time. (Ben Barnes as the Darkling anyone?😍)

TLDR; I love the series both the books and on Netflix. 💯 Recommend! 🙌🏽
(Review contd in the comments ⬇️)

Rating: 4.5/5
Book description ⬇️

i.besteph Review: The book itself is a buildup to the universe. You go in not knowing anything and come out a pro at everything Grisha. It seems a bit information overload but that makes it all the more fun to explore. (contd…) 11mo
i.besteph (contd…) Although I don‘t side with the protagonist (blame women empowerment 😂), it does portray a sad reality of how women are manipulated constantly by the ideologies of society and men. It‘s good to see a break in Alina‘s character in the end. I hope to see that continue in the 2nd book. 11mo
i.besteph (contd…) The whole series gives you Harry Potter + Hunger Games + Lord of the Rings vibes. So the story is cliché in a way. However, even with a repeated storyline, it brings with it a twist especially with the Russian heritage (which I love!) and a very manipulative villain. It‘s another fandom waiting to burst at the seams. 11mo
