Shadow and Bone
Shadow and Bone | Leigh Bardugo
Surrounded by enemies, the once-great nation of Ravka has been torn in two by the Shadow Fold, a swath of near impenetrable darkness crawling with monsters who feast on human flesh. Now its fate may rest on the shoulders of one lonely refugee. Alina Starkov has never been good at anything. But when her regiment is attacked on the Fold and her best friend is brutally injured, Alina reveals a dormant power that saves his life—a power that could be the key to setting her war-ravaged country free. Wrenched from everything she knows, Alina is whisked away to the royal court to be trained as a member of the Grisha, the magical elite led by the mysterious Darkling. Yet nothing in this lavish world is what it seems. With darkness looming and an entire kingdom depending on her untamed power, Alina will have to confront the secrets of the Grisha . . . and the secrets of her heart. Shadow and Bone is the first installment in Leigh Bardugo's Grisha Trilogy.

The plot of the story is awesome and easy to follow. All though the romance that is a love triangle is not.

#71 of my year and I can‘t wait to devour this series because then I can finally read Six Of Crows series lol

Caffeinated_Reader Oh my gosh. This was fantastic! Reminds me of The Red Queen series. I think it‘s going to be completely full of badass battles and undying acts of bravery in the name of love. Bloody and exciting. Can‘t wait to read book 2 5d

After reading Wonder Woman Warbringer I fell in love with Leigh Bardugo's writing. So I decided to give the Greshaverse a try. Oh my goodness I'm glad I did. Surprisingly it didn't take me long to get through this book. I couldn't seem to put it down.

Not very impressed with the Grisha series so far. 2.5/5. Alina comes off pretty annoying. She's in love with her childhood friend who is too busy receiving all of the attention from other girls to notice how in love she is with him. Of course until she isn't around any more. She even represses her power as a child so she never has to leave the orphanage and can stay with him forever.

wanderinglynn I felt the same way. 2mo
WhatThePuck @wanderinglynn I added some context, but really the first sentence is all I can really muster for a book I care nothing about. 2mo
Laughterhp I felt the same way as well when I read this book! Especially about Alina! 2mo

TracyReadsBooks I thought this trilogy was ok—definitely liked the world more than the characters. That being said, her duology, Six of Crows followed by Crooked Kingdom, is excellent. It‘s set in the same world and filled with great characters—Kaz Brekker is one of my all time favs. The story is essentially a heist set in a fantasy world. If you haven‘t read them, I definitely recommend giving the duology a look. 2mo
WhatThePuck @TracyReadsBooks one of my favorites. Which is why I was expecting more out of this book. 2mo
TracyReadsBooks Ah, that must be extra disappointing then. It‘ll be interesting to see how they combine the two series for the Netflix show. I have high hopes. I really like Bardugo‘s worldbuilding. 2mo

I can‘t believe it‘s taken me so long to read this! I loved the story, the setting was amazing(more than a hint of old Russia & Siberia)& the characters were memorable. Especially the Darkling. Plus the story between Mal & Alina was so sweet. And I‘ve been told the series gets even better, can‘t wait for that. Very much recommended.5⭐️ #MountTBR2019 #Bk17 #LLB19 #PickedByLibrarianRyan #Pop19 #BookAboutSomeoneWithASuperPower

After having these on my #MountTBRShelvesOfDoom for ages, I‘m finally picking up the Grisha novels. I still haven‘t finished the Six Of Crows duology coz I wanted to read these first, then got a slump, then distracted by other books. It‘s been awhile since I‘ve read a Fantasy story, but I enjoyed Godsgrave so much I wanted to continue with that genre. I have all the books including this series, the Crows duology, Language Of Thorns & King Of Scars.

GatheringBooks i promise this will pick up in the second book. the first book was only meh for me. 2mo
ravenlee A friend told me this trilogy has the best conclusion of any series she‘s read - and she was right! There‘s definitely some buildup, but I really enjoyed these books. 2mo

I really liked this book, both as a standalone novel and as the introduction to the Grisha world. The world and magic system are so interesting - while elemental magic is something that I've seen countless times, the author really makes it seem like something new. It has plenty of YA tropes, such as the orphaned, "chosen one" protagonist and a love triangle, but honestly, it does them well and I enjoyed the hell out of it.

Highly enjoyable YA fantasy. It feels a little like Uprooted and Graceling, which I also read this year in my SFF catch up. I foresaw where the plot was going early on but it didn‘t prevent me enjoying the ride. 3.5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Six of Crows is my favorite book of all time, that's the reason why I held off on reading S&B, (there was just no way it could compare) and although it still can't compare to the (for lack of better term) pure awesomeness and beauty that is Six of Crows, I was pleasantly surprised. S&B had its layers, wasn't translucent (at least for me), and it had that spark that I love so much that comes from none other than the miraculous Leigh Bardugo.

cariashley What a great endorsement for Six of Crows! It just came up in my library holds so I might finally be picking it up soon. I liked but didn‘t love the Shadow and Bone books. 3mo
Traci1 I have both of these books. Which would you recommend reading first? 3mo
Jeralyn @Traci1 I would honestly say to read Six of Crows first, it set the seen really well so you really don't have to read the S&B series first, and also it's just the best book ever (in my opinion) and S&B was good and a pick for me but definitely not my favorite compared to Six of Crows. These books are VERY different though so if u don't like one of them then don't quit on the other one too (edited) 3mo
Jeralyn And @cariashley I would definitely recommend that you at least try Six of Crows because its really something special and I cannot say in words how much that book means to me, it brings a smile to my face every time I think about it or the characters still after a year of first reading it. 3mo
cariashley @Jeralyn what a great endorsement! I‘m definitely going to have to read it next! 3mo

I liked this book, but did not love it. I‘m not even sure why- it is world building, and character driven. I think the plot/evil plan where kind of thrown in? I guess I feel like the premise and story could be engaging but I felt like snippets were provided instead of depth. I totally read this because of @Librarybelle and the #newyearwhodis list. I am glad I read it- and will continue with Grishaverse too!

Librarybelle Glad you tried it! It‘s interesting - I liked it and have the others in the series but have yet to pick them up. 5mo

Bah. I've read several of the Grisha short stories and thought they were fantastic, and the prologue to this novel started promisingly enough. But then we switched the narrative voice, and first-person narrative has to be done amazingly if I'm going to read it. Bailed at Chapter 1.

esurient Bardugo's latest is getting a lot of buzz. I might try it to see if one of her later novels suits me better. 5mo

So I suppose you could characterise this as YA fantasy, which makes it an unlikely pick for me, being as I am more of an Elderly Adult than a young one, but I actually really enjoyed it. It's well-written, the world-building is done quickly and economically and Alina, though perhaps a bit of a familiar type (mousy girl who nobody notices turns out to have awesome magical powers) is a fun and feisty heroine.

This was enjoyable. I wasn‘t blown away by it and found the main characters mild obsession with her appearance and those around her and the worth she attaches to it pretty annoying, but I think the dynamic between her and the darkling going forward could get interesting, depending on how “evil” he‘s made to be. I‘ll be getting to the sequels, but they aren‘t high priority yet.

The only ship I can think of is Chaolena (ToG) but I knew before I started the series that I wouldn't hold.

This multi-reading thing isn't too bad. It's a little "weird" switching characters and settings but other than that, it's pretty easy
