So.... this week I've been down with a nasty sinus infection (I get them every year at this time, like an unfriendly reminder of my mortalit- okay, I'll stop being dramatic 😅) and committed the cardinal sin of binging Shadow & Bone on Netflix without having read any of the books (I did this with the Witcher, too, although I'd played the games before). Now I've just finished this one, and onto the next, and I kind of like the TV one better. 🤷‍♀️

jessjess This is not to say that I hate this book, just I was expecting to read the Six of Crows cast in this and they aren't (obvs.) Which on the one hand, great move for the TV fans but on the other hand now means I have to read that book, as well... which isn't really a bad thing, to be fair! 😅 Well, I am heading back to bed as I'm on all the pain relief and cold meds I could take, and am now blissfully unaware and uncaring of the world, go team 3w
rsteve388 So I am currently in the middle of Six of Crows and I don't know what it is but I like it better than Shadow and Bone I think because the writing feels more mature. 3w
jessjess @rsteve388 I'm looking forward to reading that when my holds come through! 3w

I had a slow start to this one but that's probably because I watched the Netflix series first. I do like the book better (unsurprisingly 😅). I love the characters and the story. The writing was better than I think I expected, a pleasant surprise there. I will definitely be finishing the series and reading more by Bardugo.

I like the concepts of the ‘small science‘ magic. I also like the main character. But some parts were pretty cringy to me, like having a 120 year old man manipulate a teenager to fall in love with him.

It was entertaining, it was easy to keep turning pages. I like to know what the kids are reading these days, ya know? (Or adults, nothing wrong with adults reading YA).

I watched the show right after. Yup, book was better ☀️

rjsthumbelina To be fair, Bardugo says that she didn't intend for him to be a heart throb. It's supposed to be an representation of an abusive relationship 🤷‍♀️ 3mo
AFrostCauseReads @rjsthumbelina Huh, didn't know that. I can see that from an outside perspective, but through Alina's POV there was no hesitation or turmoil to being with him until she realized he was the bad guy. Don't get me wrong, the book needed it for plot reasons, but it was very reminiscent of Twilight. The audience knows it's bad, but the character sure doesn't. Maybe that was her intention? It‘s been a long time between drinks when it comes to YA fantasy for me (a lengthy hangover from my English teacher life). But the most recent lockdown in NZ called for some real escapism. Shadow and Bone was everything I wanted it to be. There is some quality world-building with an undemanding, pacy plot. It‘s definitely the first in a trilogy, in that it‘s very much a “set up” novel, but I‘ll be diving into the next one soon.

Pruzy I‘m reading Ninth House by Bardugo now and it‘s so, so good! Any idea how this one compares to it? As in, if I like Ninth House will I like this book? 3mo
ClairesReads @Pruzy this one is my first Bardugo too so I‘m afraid I‘m not much help comparing the two. I did find this really enjoyable though 3mo

Another July #bookspinbingo book - this one is my #doublespin .
Finished this a couple of days ago. While reading this book, I was reminded at varying points of Harry Potter, City of Bones, and Twilight. ⬇️

Vanessa So, with all this similarity to books I‘ve already read, why would I call it a “pick”? Because it still has originality, and it‘s so fun that I was mad I didn‘t have the second book on hand to start immediately (and I‘m vacationing in a place where I can‘t get it from a bookstore). My YA-loving students are going to eat this one up.

I decided to read the book before watching the show. I don't know if that was a smart decision or not because now I have a lot of expectations for the show.

The book was good, a little predictable, but it keeps you hooked on every word. I second guessed everything because everyone was so mysterious. At times I felt like the book was a mystery because information was always being held back.

I.be.Stef I read the book after watching the series. I couldn‘t help it 😂🤷🏽‍♀️ But I‘d prefer the other way around as the show is a mix of two series, shadow and bone and (edited) 5mo
AshRaye @I.be.Stef I don't think I will be able to read Six of Crows before watching the series because my sister is getting impatient and wants me to start watching it now. But I am planning on reading the rest of the books as fast as I can 5mo

Why did I wait so long to read this book? I‘m not much of a fantasy reader. I‘d like to read more of the genre, but sometimes I have a hard time with the world building aspects of fantasy. This one was perfect because it wasn‘t too hard to follow what was happening and I felt like once the story started developing, my understanding fell into place. I‘m anxious to see how the Netflix show compares.

The first book of Shadow and Bone was an okay read, it has a lot of story line that wasn't in the TV series. The big parts of the book were in the TV series so it's mostly true to the book. But the story has some.moments where it lags and feels like filler. An okay read 3.5 stars.

I‘m a newbie to the Grishaverse and I wasn‘t disappointed!
Netflix did a great job adapting this. I loved reading this and watching the series at the same time. (Ben Barnes as the Darkling anyone?😍)

TLDR; I love the series both the books and on Netflix. 💯 Recommend! 🙌🏽
(Review contd in the comments ⬇️)

Rating: 4.5/5
Book description ⬇️

I.be.Stef Review: The book itself is a buildup to the universe. You go in not knowing anything and come out a pro at everything Grisha. It seems a bit information overload but that makes it all the more fun to explore. (contd…) 5mo
I.be.Stef (contd…) Although I don‘t side with the protagonist (blame women empowerment 😂), it does portray a sad reality of how women are manipulated constantly by the ideologies of society and men. It‘s good to see a break in Alina‘s character in the end. I hope to see that continue in the 2nd book. 5mo
I.be.Stef (contd…) The whole series gives you Harry Potter + Hunger Games + Lord of the Rings vibes. So the story is cliché in a way. However, even with a repeated storyline, it brings with it a twist especially with the Russian heritage (which I love!) and a very manipulative villain. It‘s another fandom waiting to burst at the seams. 5mo

She never expected someone to come along and tell her she has the power to close the Fold. But Alina can‘t seem to draw on this power everybody thinks she has. 5⭐️

#2021Book49
I love books that include an insane amount of world-building. However, this book might get a little too caught up in the world-building. It's 358 pages and only about 58 of those pages are really plot driven. The rest is all about setting up the extremely complicated dynamics of the main characters and the world around them. Overall, I really enjoyed this book, though.

So, I admittedly didn‘t read this book until *after* watching the show...but I watched the show and got hooked, so had to see what happened 😅 The book is very different! Very fast paced, and only from Alina‘s perspective which I wasn‘t expecting. I liked the relationship building between her and Mal, as well as the Grishaverse world-building although. I feel the show did more since it kind-of merged with Six of Crows? Overall a good read!

Only because of Mal (from the show) I started reading this. It's a nice story. Nothing extraordinary, but not bad either. Six of crows had better plot twists and more mature in writing. Grisha trilogy is for teens and adults who like simple fantasy stories.

This book is a reminder of why I still like YA fantasy. I like the world, the characters and the plot. I discussed this first book with 2 Friends from our former book club now called “the forgotten book club” since we still in limbo☺️We agree that some parts were solved in a “rush” way. It is still YA story in terms of characters behavior and some romance. But I really like it and now I need to watch the tv show and read the second book. Yes! 3.8⭐️
