Purple Hibiscus: A Novel | Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
Fifteen-year-old Kambili and her older brother Jaja lead a privileged life in Enugu, Nigeria. They live in a beautiful house, with a caring family, and attend an exclusive missionary school. They're completely shielded from the troubles of the world. Yet, as Kambili reveals in her tender-voiced account, things are less perfect than they appear. Although her Papa is generous and well respected, he is fanatically religious and tyrannical at homea home that is silent and suffocating. As the country begins to fall apart under a military coup, Kambili and Jaja are sent to their aunt, a university professor outside the city, where they discover a life beyond the confines of their fathers authority. Books cram the shelves, curry and nutmeg permeate the air, and their cousins laughter rings throughout the house. When they return home, tensions within the family escalate, and Kambili must find the strength to keep her loved ones together.Purple Hibiscus is an exquisite novel about the emotional turmoil of adolescence, the powerful bonds of family, and the bright promise of freedom.

This was a really really tough read for me. I had to put it down in spots. But damn, her writing is just so beautiful. Her characters are so flawed and three-dimensional and human and I feel like, through her books, I‘ve been to Nigeria. Read her if you haven‘t yet.

Adichie is a gifted writer, but I absolutely hated the relentless depiction of domestic violence perpetrated by the religious zealot father. This was the most depressing book I ever read and almost bailed a couple times. I liked Americanah 100% better. Read for #authoramonth

Soubhiville I agree with you. Beautiful writing but what a bleak depressing story. Have you read 3w
Soubhiville I‘m wondering how it might fit between her other novels. PH is so different from Americanah. 3w
ValerieAndBooks @Soubhiville I kept hoping something positive would happen, but no 😰. I put Half of a Yellow Sun on hold (ebook) from the library, at the beginning of the month. Wait time as of today is estimated to be 6 weeks. I, too, am curious how it compares to the other two novels. 3w

BarbaraBB I just read a raving review of this book by @Simona Interesting since I value both your opinion‘s high! 3w
Soubhiville @BarbaraBB I actually rated Purple Hibiscus a pick. Even though it‘s a difficult subject, I still found it to be an excellent book. 3w
emtobiasz I really liked the author‘s short story collection, but it remains the only thing I‘ve read by her: 3w
ValerieAndBooks @soubhiville @barbarabb I kept thinking about how I would rate this. If it was based on literary merit alone, definitely a pick. But the subject matter...no one could possibly “enjoy“ reading it. We all know domestic violence is horrible. And that happy endings cannot be expected from that kind of situation. Maybe giving this a pan was too strong, but I went with how I felt while reading rather than literary analysis. 3w
ValerieAndBooks @emtobiasz I definitely want to give her short story collection a try someday.
3w
Suet624 Well that one‘s off my list now. 3w
Reggie Aww, now I want to read it more. Lol. Great review! 3w
Simona @BarbaraBB Read it ... now 😘 2w
ValerieAndBooks @Suet624 I‘m glad this wasn‘t the first one of hers I read (it was her first published book I think), otherwise I wouldn‘t have wanted to pick her up again and would have missed out. 2w

This is definitely my favorite fiction book by Adichie. Focus is on Nigerian family, their interpersonal relationship, their view on the world (which is deeply marked by Catholicism) and society‘s view on them, with the backdrop in turbulent times in Nigerian history. Atmospheric story, with many themes, in the core very brutal content, but written in matter of fact style, without preachiness and overly sentimental prose. #AuthorAMonth

Simona @Tanisha_A What I liked/admire almost the most in this novel is her ability to portray the horror behind the unspoken/written. This novel is very good example for ‘show, don‘t tell‘. 3w

A well written if difficult to read (content wise) book about life in Nigeria during political upheaval. From the point of view of a 16 year old girl with an abusive father who is also obsessed with their adopted Christianity. I get angry about religious zealots who put faith above all other aspects of life, so this was tough for me. Adichie is a brilliant writer though, so I‘m glad I read it.

This book was honestly so good. Adiche does a wonderful job of tying themes of religious fanaticism and intolerance, familial abuse, and political unrest into this coming of age story. Kambili, at the center of it all, is simply trying to figure out where she fits in and how to cope. It really is beautiful and heartbreaking, and I highly recommend this book if you haven‘t read it.

A disquieting and powerful read. Set in the military ruled Nigeria, Adichie weaves a gut punching story consisting characters enduring religious fanaticism, abused and loveless childhood, broken relationships, but also finding freedom, love, happiness, laughter elsewhere. Even though situations are usually upsetting through the course of the narrative, it's sprinkled with a sense of hope. Just so raw and captivating.

This is my first Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie novel which also happens to be her debut novel. The story revolves around many themes; oppression, class warfare, life under a military regime, religious fanaticism, domestic violence, and family bonds. Adichie masters the art of portraying these themes without 'telling' the reader but showing us through the characters. I look forward to reading more of Adichie's novels.

So I‘m a little late to the party, but here‘s my April wrap up. The books are listed in order from most (Hibiscus) to least favorite (Bury). I‘ve been re-reading (listening) to the HP series, and I still think they‘re absolutely fabulous, but as I‘ve read them before, they didn‘t have the same impact on me as the top row of books did.
While I didn‘t love them, I appreciated the books on the bottom row; there were no “losers” this month.

“When do we speak out, eh? When soldiers are appointed lecturers and students attend lectures with guns to their heads? When do we speak out?" ~ Chimamanda Adichie

JanuarieTimewalker13 This is a very sad commentary. Our teachers are armed, and in Britain, even the police aren‘t. What is wrong with America? Why is our society so violent? I don‘t think we are the most violent on a per capital basis, but I think this is so sad. Can someone shed light on this? I‘m baffled by this. All these guns don‘t make anything better. 7mo
Reggie So I read this book Arcadia and in it the Amish live next to the commune that has big bright ideas but ultimately fails. Later on in the book an Amish character tells one of the ex-commune people “you guys were weak, we knew you wouldn‘t last, when you do something like this you either choose community or freedom and you guys always chose freedom.” I think about that a lot. @JanuarieTimewalker13 and also Jurassic Park. I was hesitant to read this book because of the content, but the author did an amazing job of showing us this broken family in a way that was not traumatizing for me to read. Was it difficult? Yes, but it wasn‘t so difficult that I walked away. Kambili‘s coming of age is beautiful, and she learns such grace during the events portrayed here. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

After being converted to Catholicism by missionaries as a child in Nigeria, Eugene grows to be a religious zealot and a very violent man. The story is told through the 15-year-old Kambili and her older brother, Jaja. There is hell to pay at home for any indiscretion But Kambili and Jaja enjoy periods of rest and peace on frequent trips to stay with their much more level headed and non-fanatical Aunty Ifeoma.

Adichie's writing is so simplistic and effortless that you just slide right into the story. I had no idea this was her debut novel because it's written so beautifully. I loved the strength and resilience of the characters and the love that shone through in the relationships, even when there was strife and anger. The twist at the end completely got me but I'm glad it ended the way it did.

Excellent debut by this author. If this had been my introduction to Chimamanda Adichie's novels, I would have probably rated it higher. However, I have also read her book "Americanah," which is absolutely stunning. Putting these two books side-by-side, it's obvious that Adichie has made tremendous growth as a writer since this debut. Definitely recommend both books, however.

Adichie deftly tells a story of oppression without clearly labeling it as such. It's a tender and heartbreaking book as we see the story unfold through the eyes of Kambili as she comes of age while her world falls apart. It's a story of both silence being lifted and silence descending.

Kambili, when 16, falls in love with a local priest, Father Amadi, but this is not their love story. It is a beautifully written tale of human nature, good, bad and ugly at times. Kambili is also beaten by her deeply religious father, as is her mother and brother. I found this to be genuinely moving and loved the insight into Nigerian culture. I hope there is a follow up as I need to know the rest of Kambili‘s story. A truly must read novel
