This is a rare occurrence where I liked the screen adaptation better. I thought book Lily was really immature and the ending was lackluster. Still a decent read though, I would have loved it when I was a teen. (I enjoyed all the subtle references to Nick and Norah sprinkled throughout)

Super cute (and steamy!) holiday m/m romance! Albert is great at writing relatable characters who you can't help but love. Paul is a grump who never decorates but when his brother says he's coming home for Christmas he must enlist his neighbor Gideon to help, the cheerful holiday lights master. They each have past holiday trauma to work through together.

The third installment in the Wayfarer universe and wonderful as always. Chambers has a way with weaving characters' stories together subtly. This one was set on the Exodan Fleet, exploring themes of tradition and belonging, finding your own corner of the universe to call home.

The last chapter is pretty much an epilogue, letting us know how things turned out for all the characters. I felt like it was a little too perfect (Rochester even gets some of his sight back??) But I'm happy for Jane, she deserves a happy ending. What are your overall thoughts of the book? It's not gonna be a new favorite of mine, but I'm glad I reread it. @suvata @megnews @Kdgordon88 @ATB @Levana

megnews Yes, a little too tidily wrapped up. Though I can‘t quite see how she is, if Jane‘s happy, I‘m happy for her. I hadn‘t read this in such a long time, I‘d forgotten much of it and I was much younger when I read it. It seemed more romantic then. Not so much now. Glad I reread it though. Thank you for hosting! 7d
peanutnine @megnews yes definitely not as romantic as everyone makes it out to be, imo. Rochester is too flawed for my tastes. Thanks for joining me in reading and discussing! ☺️ 7d

Okay, this was the romance book I'd been craving. It's a sweet second-chance story with likeable middle-aged characters set in a yarn store! As a knitter, this made me extremely happy. It wasn't all fluff, and the characters had to deal with some past trauma and current serious life problems. But the relationship was adorable and you're rooting for them to work through it all.

It's set on an alien world where most of society lives under the safety of corporate "bubbles". Morgan grew up in the wild Brush and now freelances for the app Huntr to take down any imps who infiltrate the city. It's a hilarious take on the gig economy, with crazy monsters and great friendships.

This was my November #bookspin pick. I was surprised by how much I did not like this book. Maybe I was in the wrong mood for it. But I was looking forward to a cozy, fluffy romance and this was not that. I hated almost all the characters' personalities and was frustrated by their stupid decisions. I like small town settings where everyone helps each other and there's a strong sense of community. ⬇️

peanutnine But in this small town, everyone just seemed to talk about each other behind their backs and cause problems. I kept reading hoping it would get better. But by the end everything was magically wrapped up too sweetly and I was not impressed. @TheAromaofBooks 2w
TheAromaofBooks I got this one from BookOutlet on the cheap because I thought it was a Christmasy book (from the cover)... but when I was gathering books for #WinterGames, the synopsis seems like this isn't Christmasy at all?? I also really dislike it when covers/blurbs look like fun fluff, but the actual story isn't. Such a disservice to the book, because I'm always going to be mad when it's not what it looks like! 2w
peanutnine @TheAromaofBooks yes exactly! It's nothing like Gilmore Girls as it is blurbed on the cover. I also thought it would be more Christmas-y but it really takes place over the course of a year and Christmas kinda gets skipped over 😑 2w
TheAromaofBooks I'm in the middle of writing a review for a Christmas book I read this week and it made me realize that the cover for it is almost exactly the same as this one! 2w

Jane returns to Thornfield and finds that it has been burned by Bertha, who kills herself when Rochester tries to save her from the fire.
Do you think there is any significance of Bertha starting the fire in Jane's bed? What do you think of the concept of Rochester's subsequent injuries as punishment for his sins? ⬇️

peanutnine Jane reunites with Rochester and seems to love him even more now that he is vulnerable. The power dynamic has changed between them and she now has more agency in the relationship, but do you think she is sacrificing anything by being with him?
And then the mysterious voice... what do you think it's purpose is to the story? Does it add any value?
2w
megnews Oh I definitely think Bertha knew enough of what was going on to set Jane‘s bed on fire on purpose. I don‘t really think that‘s how God works in regards to his injuries as punishment. Jane seems to be sacrificing a lot to be with Rochester in that I think she deserves better, her equal in decency. But who can tell someone they love to stop loving? No one. 2w

Another lovely mystery by Madame Christie. I'm always so impressed that each time she has a new way to tell a story. In this one, Poirot receives letters from an ABC telling him of his plans for murder. Each victim's name starts with the same letter as the town they live in. Hastings is back to visit this time, which I always enjoy. And as he recounts the story, he adds in the perspective of ABC throughout. It's an interesting dynamic.

As we're getting close to the end of the year and looking back on 2021, one of my goals for next year is to read more diversely. I've done some this year, but I'd like to make it more of a priority and bring more awareness to my choices.
There are a lot of reading challenges for 2022 planned but nothing with this focus. So I was thinking of starting my own and I wanted to see if my favorite litsy community would like to join me on this journey ⬇️

peanutnine I was thinking of having each month of the year dedicated to a certain heritage or culture or minority. The goal each month would be to read at least one book with an author and/or main character of that background.
I will post the list of monthly prompts ahead of time so you can plan your year if that's your thing. Let me know if you would be interested in joining a challenge like this! I'd love your feedback

Laughterhp Oh I would be interested! I‘m always looking to diversify my reading, but find it tough to do. 3w

PageShifter I am in. I read quite diversely already - but this still sounds like an adventure. 3w
xicanti I‘m always in favour of diversity challenges, but to be honest, I‘m leery of the “author and/or main character” stipulation. I feel like that leaves a lot of wiggle room for people to read, for example, a novel about Japanese characters written by a White American instead of a similar book by a Japanese writer. I‘ve seen a lot of that in the geography-focused challenges and to me, it doesn‘t fit the brief. 3w
peanutnine @xicanti that's a really good point. I was thinking about character representation in the story in addition to supporting diverse authors. But you're right, the "or" can make things icky with reading books that aren't own voices. I'll change that, thanks for bringing it to my attention! 3w
megnews @peanutnine I can‘t promise to participate every month but I will try to some. 3w
4thhouseontheleft I think this is a great idea, and I agree with @xicanti that I would prefer a focus on #OwnVoices books. That‘s what I do with the geography challengeas, I only choose books published by an author from that country, and look for works in translation as much as possible. 3w
Amiable I love this idea! Like @megnews I am not sure I could keep up with every month, but I would love to participate and see the prompts and follow along with what everyone else is reading to get ideas and suggestions to diversify my choices. (edited) 3w
Liz_M I love this idea! I couldn't quite keep up with the #integrateyourshelf prompts this this year, but really enjoyed seeing everyone's recommendations, so a monthly challenge should be just about right! (edited) 3w
leah152 I'm in 😊📚 2w
tokorowilliamwallace The annual Read Harder challenge, I believe, tries to provide this for readers, too---to add background and representative diverse reads to TBRs and on reading culture's radar. I'll try to join you where I can! 5d

I was intrigued by the premise of this graphic novel: a group of paper girls stumble upon a mystery of sci-fi epic proportions. I thought it was okay, but nothing super exciting. I think this first volume had to do a lot of set up and by the end seemed to get a lot of the basics explained. I'll read the next volume in the hopes that the story will pick up more finally.

Anyone else want to scream while reading these chapters? I'm interested to hear your thoughts on St John, his character and manipulation of Jane.
Why do you think she submits to his pressure as she does? She admits that obeying him took away a part of herself yet she continues to do his bidding. And she is so heartbroken when he is cruel to her after her refusals of his proposal. ⬇️

peanutnine Jane's relationship with religion has changed gradually throughout the book. How do you think her view of it now is affecting her decisions? What do you make of the voice on the wind calling for Jane? Supernatural or imagined? @suvata @megnews @Kdgordon88 @ATB @Levana 4w
megnews Yes! And keep them apart so he couldn‘t manipulate her. If he wants to call something sin he can call his manipulation that. I don‘t know about the voice or have any deep thoughts. I spent the two chapters too aggravated with St John. Quit prolonging your trip, sir! 4w

peanutnine @suvata I mean, I'm not a fan of Rochester, and they're both manipulative, but I honestly think St John is worse. He forces Jane to change who she is to gain his approval. At least Rochester admires her for her true character 3w
