What Angels Fear
What Angels Fear: A Sebastian St. Cyr Mystery | C.S. Harris
It's 1811, and the threat of revolution haunts the upper classes of King George III's England. Then a beautiful young woman is found savagely murdered on the altar steps of an ancient church near Westminster Abbey. A dueling pistol found at the scene and the damning testimony of a witness both point to one man-Sebastian St. Cyr, Viscount Devlin, a brilliant young nobleman shattered by his experience in the Napoleonic Wars.

Finally, finally, finally getting to this series.
I promised myself I would not start a new one until I finished one of the 32 other series I am currently reading.
Fail! But this was worth it. A great first book. Love Sebastian! Love the Regency Britain historical setting! Appreciate a Magistrate (police officer) that is neither a buffoon nor an antagonistic pain in the …. Lots of great characters! Looking forward to more. #serieslove2023

Mysteries, especially historical ones! The tagged is the first in probably my favorite book series ever. A historical mystery series that follows Sebastian St Cyr, Lord Devlin as he solves murders in Regency London. Sebastian and his eventual wife (enemies to lovers trope!) are one of my favorite literary couples of all time.

C.S. Harris's favorite words: reticule, phaeton, pelisse, transept.

35% in, and I'm not feeling it. Bailing in favor of titles that are due back soon and that interest me more. If Tom were the main character, maybe I'd stick with it.

Get ready for a bunch of reviews today! I haven‘t had time to post my reviews this week.

This is a historical mystery that has been on my TBR forever! It was much darker and a lot more gruesome than I thought it was going to be. Sebastian is accused of killing an actress in a church so he obviously needs to hide from the police and find the killer himself.

I didn‘t think this one was the best and won‘t continue this series.

I loved this regency mystery! In 1811 London, a viscount gets caught up in a grisly murder and sets out to solve it in order to clear his own name. There's a lot of action and political intrigue and his former love is involved too. I liked Sebastian St. Cyr and the other characters (especially his young helper, Tom!). Always love Davina Porter's narration. Will definitely continue this series.

I am forever starting book series that I have no interest in continuing, so I am excited to have enjoyed book one of this Sebastian St. Cyr series so much. While I think author C.S. Harris could do a slightly better job of establishing place and time (early 19th Century London), I appreciated that she includes the trauma faced by St. Cyr due to the time he spent fighting in the Napoleonic Wars. I‘m looking forward to book two.

My reading buddies and I are checking out this historical mystery from 2005. As I was selecting new materials for my library, I came across the newest book in this series and wanted to read it, but when I realized it was a series, I decided to start with the first. In this one, Sebastian, Viscount Devlin, is thought to have murdered a young woman. Trying to clear his name, he begins to investigate the case. It is set in late Georgian London, 1811.

Well-written, action-packed, historical mystery series set in 1811 Regency England. Fascinating characters especially Sebastian, Kat Boleyn and Tom. Lots of clues and suspects. Since it was pre-scientific methods, I missed the forensics of the modern day mystery novels. I found the book to be a page-turner. Also read book 2. Both were 5 star reads. I would highly recommend this series to lovers of historical mysteries with a bit of romance.

What a fantastic start to a series! The mystery is absorbing and had enough twists that I didn't predict who dunnit till the very end. The hero is a brooding yet noble man who worked for military intelligence in the war against Napoleon. The side-kick is a cheeky street urchin. Duels! Flights over rooftops! An old love! What's not to like?

This book is set in 1811 England, and figures a lead character who is accused of murder and goes on the run to prove his innocence. It is set against the beginning of the Regency period (when the future George IV is made Regent, because his father George III is declared mad) which leads to a backdrop of political machinations. This really is an excellent read and I look forward to continuing the series.
