In some ways, the slow increase of ace representation in books feels similar to the increase of vegan options in the world. If you‘d have told me I could have my pick of plant-based meats at the supermarket 12 years ago, I‘d have been skeptical. So I have to believe something similar is coming in book options!

Wishing the year was over for many reasons - 1 being that I‘m looking forward to not being so busy! @Moll has a great list of reads - half of which were already on my TBR!

As in years past, I‘ll definitely be taking this list further into 2022 than January.

Thanks as always to @monalyisha for being a great matchmaker!

I don‘t often cry at books, but this one got me. I think the idea that Adrian adopted Grace even as he went searching for Vanessa hit me because my stepdad raised me from the time I was a baby until he died eight years ago. I definitely see this plot point through a biased lens.

I‘ve read all of Abby Jimenez‘s 3 published books over the past few months, and I‘m a fan. I‘m looking forward to her next one in 2022.

Just a reminder that #NonfictionNerds is still kicking after nearly two years! We have over 300 members, but just a handful who participate in the discussion threads. If you aren‘t already a member, or if you are but have been lurking, come say hi!

We‘ve read a lot of good books this year - some of which would never have landed on my TBR. For that, I‘m grateful.

Half of my 2021 reads were completed in July and August. I guess I can count this summer as a successful one on that front!

What I‘m happiest about is the fact that I didn‘t spend a penny this month, for the first time all year! I‘m still about $30 in the red for #pennyperpage, but I‘m hopeful for the end of year.

One of six books I‘m currently reading (I went a little overboard this month), and I didn‘t expect it to be so funny! I‘ve been laughing out loud and I love that. For some reason, I picture Josh as Nico Tortella from Younger… and I only JUST remembered that Nico‘s character on that show is also named Josh. Now I feel a bit silly 😆

(This one‘s also smutty, which I feel it‘s only fair to tell you in case that is/isn‘t your thing.)

I spent much of the pandemic off of Twitter, and over the past couple weeks, I‘ve been there more often.

But the blowback this tweet from the Bloomington PD is getting is a great reminder that social media sucks sometimes. People are actually mad that LFL stewards don‘t want their libraries pillaged. “Free means free! Those books are worthless! You‘ve got no proof they‘re being resold!”

This is why we can‘t have nice things.

My town held its first annual Pride celebration this morning! While I didn‘t go, I was pleased to see such an event here. I couldn‘t help but wonder if any aces were there.

As a heteroromantic ace, I‘ve seen so much gatekeeping regarding whether we‘re part of the queer community. As if 1% of the population identifying as acespec isn‘t minority enough for a place at the table. When ACE came out last year, it was a joy to see a mirror held up! 👇🏻

dariazeoli Representation matters. I‘m in my forties and didn‘t even know asexuality was a thing in my formative years! We need visibility, not erasure. We need support, not “you‘re basically straight so sit down and shut up.” If you‘re ace and identify as queer, don‘t let anyone tell you that‘s not allowed. 6mo
dariazeoli Heteroromantic and heterosexual are NOT the same thing. And whether you romantically identify as hetero-, homo-, bi-, pan-, or aromantic, your story is valid. YOU are valid. Happy Pride! 6mo

Browsing the #littlefreelibrary tag on IG & daydreaming about how cool it would be to have one. I‘d start an Insta to promote it, stock it with favorite reads... just a few hurdles: I rent. I don‘t trust some of the neighbors. The town next door installed two LFLs recently, & sadly I saw no movement between the donation I made last week & the one I made in March.

The only other book by the author that I tried (and DNF‘d) was Salvage the Bones - I couldn‘t bear the dog fighting.

Ward writes beautifully. She really makes you feel like you are in her scenes. I wasn‘t so sure how I would feel about this book until I was very near the end. When the climax happened, I held my breath. When things resolved, I exhaled.

So glad this was her debut and that there are more books for me to explore!

The good news: I‘m vaccinated.
The irony: they paused J&J vaccines due to a rare blood clotting issue found in 6 women in the US.
