Top left: the view from my window in NJ. Bottom right: zooming in on what‘s visible of the sun.

The wildfires in Canada are no joke! I hope our neighbors in the North are safe, and that those on the East Coast are staying indoors!

I have a 4-day weekend and I‘m thinking of hunkering down with my TBR stack. This view is like a dystopian novel come to life!

marleed Oh yikes. I hope you can stay inside in filtered air. 1d

Jess I hear ya! I‘m in central NJ in a town that just had a forest fire yesterday and the combo is rough. This wind is not helping matters either. Hope you are feeling alright. 1d
dabbe Wow. 😳 Stay safe and hunker down, everyone! 💙💚💙 1d
sherrisilvera Long Island looked the same. Creepy orange. 24h
Susanita It‘s not orange here, but it‘s definitely hazy, and the air smells funny. 21h
Meshell1313 Yes- I‘m in North NJ- so scary. Back to wearing my masks! Hoping our Canada friends are staying safe! 21h
fredamans I'm outside Toronto... a couple hours from the fires. Our AQI - air quality index is 9/10 today. The worst so far. Your eyes burn outside and the smell is like the world's biggest campfire. I won't describe the haze, as I'm sure it's all over media. They ask us to stay in, but wear a N95 if you have to go out. The particular matter in the air could harm us. It's scary, and I pray for my country right now. Over 400 fires throughout Canada. 😭 🙏 3h

This novel sweeps generations and I think I would choose to read a print copy if I had it to do over, if only because I spent a whole section of the audio book thinking I was listening to one character when it was someone else.

This was a reread for me, and this time I listened to Heather tell her tale. God, I‘m just so sad; have been since I heard that she died of depression last month. I keep thinking about how she would never leave her kids, how she was so hopeful after this treatment. How things seemed to unravel at such a quick pace. It‘s gutting.

I thought this was funny because I‘ve asked Millie who her favorite Beatle is, and she grunted when I said “John?”

Poor Mills has reached senior age and is starting to have trouble jumping on the couch. She has no interest in figuring out how to use the stairs we bought years ago for her to get on my bed. For now, we‘re helping her get a leg (or 4) up when she wants to. I‘m so anxious thinking of her aging.

I didn‘t expect the news of Heather Armstrong‘s death to hit me as hard as it has, but I keep thinking about those early years of blogging, how the internet was different back then, how fucking funny Dooce was with her writing.

It‘s hard to reconcile some of the last posts she made with that person. They were harmful to a group including her child. They were alarming to anyone familiar with the mental illness struggles she wrote about. 👇🏻

dariazeoli I don‘t know if Heather‘s suicide is surprising, but it was a gut punch. She fought to live for her kIds, for her family, for a long time. I hope she is at peace. I hope her kids get the support they‘ll need. I hope that next time we watch someone‘s journey like it‘s a trainwreck, we try to remember compassion, to not comment if it‘s not helpful. I‘ll be re-reading her books to remember that woman who impacted a lot of us bloggers. (edited) 4w
BarbaraJean This news hit me hard, too. She was so influential; in the blogosphere and personally. I have such gratitude for her voice back then—her writing helped one of my best friends dig out of post partum depression, normalizing and validating that struggle. I hadn‘t been following her for a while and was unaware of her recent battles with alcoholism. My heart breaks for her daughters, and I echo your hopes. 4w
KathyWheeler I have some online friends that I made because of her. I was really sad to hear about her death. 4w

Yesterday was my first missed chapter for #LesMisCAD - I‘m impressed that I kept it up for nearly 4 months! It seems like this weekend‘s chapters were meant to be read together, anyway, so no harm done.

Learning about the nuns and their daily life was truly something. Hugo painted a picture by describing their yellow teeth and their penance while kneeling on the stone floor for hours. Sounds miserable to me!

If I‘m not mistaken, today‘s chapter is the longest thus far, as Jean Valjean struggles with making a choice between admitting his identity or letting another man go to the gallows in his place. What would you do on his shoes? 🤔

#LesMisCAD

IndoorDame I wish I had any sort of answer for that question! At first I thought him asking what would happen to all the people who now relied on him was just a rationalization, but then I realized that in a world without social services to fall back even if the question started out self serving, it isn‘t only that. He really does have to decide whose life is more valuable, or how many… I‘m glad I don‘t have a life that requires making that kind of choice! 3mo

I‘ve been listening to this one on my walks for coffee this weekend, wondering if anyone notices the disgust on my face as I scoff at Strane‘s abhorrent behavior. Today especially infuriated me as he threatened Vanessa with foster care if anyone found out what “they” were guilty of.

This novel is gripping. I hate that the plot is reminiscent of so many lived experiences.

EKonrad Did kind of a deep dive into the author after I read this. Seems like it might have been based on some of her own experiences (but she potentially fictionalized a bit). Very powerful book imo. 4mo

The month isn‘t over yet, but so far, Evanna Lynch‘s memoir is my top read for January. Often difficult and beautifully written, Lynch recounts her experience with anorexia, the troubling ways the system tried to help her, and what it‘s like navigating the world in recovery. You needn‘t be a fan of Luna Lovegood to admire Lynch‘s story.

I of course urge careful reading as the topics of self-harm and eating disorders are discussed throughout.
