Mehso-so

I rec'd this #arc from Penguin Random House. Pub date is June 11. Thanks PRH!

This author definitely has potential. I love how evocative she makes Chinatown in San Francisco and her additions of magic to the story are fantastic. More importantly, I know this book will appeal to a large number of people/patrons. It's a perfect light summer read with interesting characters, lovely food descriptions, and a satisfying ending. Longer review later.

gossamerchild The reason for my “so so“ choice is that it simply isn't my cup of tea, and I found myself rolling my eyes a lot. However, I definitely see the appeal and would recommend this to anyone who likes cozies (not a mystery, though) and magic- infused fiction (Sarah Addison Allen comes to mind). The recipes scattered throughout and her descriptions of food are definitely the strongest parts of the story. And now I'm hungry for really good Chinese food. 5h
suvata Sounds like something I might enjoy. 5h
gossamerchild @suvata excellent!

That. Was. Intense. I mostly have no idea what the hell was going on. I feel like a bug 😆. That comment has context in the book. I feel compelled to finish the trilogy just to see if I figure stuff out.

Great #booksnbooze discussion, though! My book group, that is.

Finished this one recently, too. As with all Mary Roach books, I adore her footnotes. Next to #terrypratchett, her footnotes are the best! Fascinating topic, told in a totally approachable and respectful (because we all know how quickly this topic of conversation can go sideways) manner. Love Mary Roach!

I finished this last week and just have to say....WTF? Did I actually read this as a child? Did I ENJOY it? What on EARTH is going on in this book? Was he drunk? I...do...not....get...it. For people with children - do your kids like this? I'm really baffled. And glad I read it (or re-read it; I honestly can't remember now if I ever read it), 'cause that was totally bizarre :-D

LaurenReads I agree, my perception of Alice in Wonderland is based on the movie, which I realized after rereading the book as an adult. 3w

It's so strange when a book reflects real life. I had this happen to me at work today, where a co-worker mocked me (or "trailed" me, in the words of Charlotte Bronte) for not knowing something she thought was common knowledge.
