The Scarlet Letter | Nathaniel Hawthorne

@TheAromaofBooks I overcommitted to too many buddy reads for September and I don‘t want to make the same mistake in October. So I‘ve decided to opt out #TheScarletLetter, although I‘d still like to remain on the tag list so I can read the snarky hashtags and find out what others think and feel about the story of Hester Prynne and her daughter Pearl. #RandomClassics

TheAromaofBooks Sounds good!! I'll tag you when I (randomly haha) post and you can jump in on the discussions whenever you like!! 2d

I enjoyed this very much for #AuthorAMonth. Binti is a Master Harmonizer, she sees beauty in numbers. She sees the world around her in numbers, so she sees the beauty all around. When she encounters an alien race for the first time she is harmonizing a peace between them and humanity. I listened to this in audio format and the narrator‘s voice was especially lovely.

It seemed to start off a little slow, but then it picked up so I kept listening. This is the first book I‘ve listened to narrated by Wil Wheaton and I wasn‘t exactly sure how I‘d react to a story read by Wesley Crusher. But he did a good job. I could tell which character he was voicing when he spoke, which I believe is vital when listening to a book. Down with books narrated by AI! Enjoy folks! Now back to our regularly scheduled reading.

#HashtagBrigade I wanted to love this, since I loved the first three books by Forster that I‘ve read. And sometimes I did love it. The language is lush and beautiful. The descriptions of the Hindu and Muslim faiths were entrancing. The prejudices of the different races and religions were very apparent. Except I‘ve never understood racism and religionism. The exchange between Aziz and Mrs. Moore in the mosque and the exchange between (cont)⬇️

CatLass007 Aziz and Mrs. Moore‘s son, Ralph, were almost dreamlike. And I still want to bash everyone‘s heads together for their stupid behavior. Maybe I don‘t understand the mindset of any character in this book. Maybe that‘s what made it so difficult for me to make it through. But it‘s been so many years since I read anything by Forster that I‘m considering re-reading it to see how my perspective has changed. And I‘d try reading more Forster also. 1w

I‘m signed up for a number of buddy reads and I‘m having a difficult time keeping track of them. So I‘m going to list as many as I can, along with the host. Please help me add any In which I‘ve shown an interest or I may have forgotten.

CatLass007 @StayCurious @Librarybelle @BarkingMadRead @TheAromaofBooks @TheSpineView @CBee Can any or all of you help me out? Am I listed on any of the buddy reads of which you belong and I seem to have forgotten? Could any of you please offer suggestions for buddy reads in which I might like to participate or for which I might have forgotten to register. How many of these buddy reads will be taking votes for all of next year? How many will be (cont)⬇️ 2w
CatLass007 taking votes for one month at a time? Anything about buddy reads I might have forgotten to ask? I think I remember seeing a post for October that‘s #Scaretathalon or something and another that focuses on audiobooks? 2w
TEArificbooks @CatLass007 #scarathlon is a month long reading challenge in October. Go to @Clwojick page to sign up and she will put you on a team. You get points for spooky book you read, ever spooky movie, craft, etc. 2w
TEArificbooks I am the host of #witchathon which is a month long reading challenge in October where you just read at least one witchy book of your choice. No sign up required, you just post and tag me and witchathon when you have read a witchy book. Low key no stress. 2w
CatLass007 @TEArificbooks Thank you so much! I‘m probably not going to join something in which points are given, I don‘t want to push myself beyond my stress levels. I‘m very competitive and I just want Litsy and buddy reads to be my safe place. But #witchathon sounds like fun. I‘m sure I can find one or ten witchy books in my audio library. 2w
StayCurious Hi! I host #pemberlittens #JaneAdjacent where we read books somehow linked to Jane Austen. We vote each month on our next book. Although for October we‘ve decided to read the next book in a series - let me know if you‘d like to join! 2w
StayCurious I also host #LittensLoveRomance where we read romance books all year long. Each month is a different sub genre and we vote monthly. 2w
5feet.of.fury Do you do #losersclub with @BarkingMadRead ? All the Stephen King in order 2w
Librarybelle Yes, I have your name for the tag list for the rest of 2023 for #LiteraryCrew . I leave it up to everyone if they prefer to be tagged on certain months or if they wish to be tagged each month. It‘s very low key! I will soon open suggestions from the group for 2024 and then open voting. Look for details soon on that! 2w
Librarybelle I am also starting a #NancyDrewBR , where the group reads one Nancy Drew a month in series order. The first discussion of the first book, The Secret of the Old Clock, is November 15th. This coincides with @TheBookHippie ‘s November read of this book for her classic children‘s buddy read group. 2w
TheAromaofBooks I do have you on the #RandomClassics list!! I set the books I'm going to read for the year, and then anyone who wants to read along can do so. Anyone is welcome to skip a month/book that doesn't appeal to them or that they don't want to reread or whatever. Each book is kind of its own thing!! 2w
BarkingMadRead @Librarybelle can you add me to your tag list for Nancy Drew?!? That‘s so cool! 2w
TheBookHippie I do #SUNDAYBUDDYREAD AND #CHILDRENSCLASSICREAD2023 The year changes as we go 2w
CatLass007 @StayCurious I definitely want to join in with #PemberLittens #JaneAdjacent. Please count me in for as long as it lasts. I definitely want to read the second book in the series, and any others that may follow. Lots of different mystery series surrounding Jane and her literary offspring. I‘m not usually a reader of romance, but I‘d still like to be included in your #LittensLoveRomance — because you never know what my mood will be. Thank you.♥️ (edited) 1w
CatLass007 @Librarybelle Please keep including me in the #LiteraryCrew notifications unless I ask you to do otherwise. I grew up reading Nancy Drew, but I don‘t think I‘m ready for a reread . Thank you for your answers to my questions and thank you for hosting! 1w
CatLass007 @TheAromaofBooks Please keep me on the #RandomClassics list. One of the cool things about this list is that so many are free either through Libby as library books or are included with my Audible membership. 1w
CatLass007 @TheBookHippie please keep me on your list for the #SundayBuddyRead. I wasn‘t able to participate this month because I already overcommitted. 1w
CatLass007 @5feet.of.fury I was in at the beginning with #losersclub and the #TerryPratchett buddy reads. That was back when there was a lot of upheaval in my life and I became overwhelmed with everything. I don‘t really want to start back with either of those buddy reads. No particular reason. 1w
CatLass007 @StayCurious @Librarybelle @BarkingMadRead @TheAromaofBooks @TheSpineView @CBee @TEArificbooks @5feet.of.fury @TheBookHippeie Thank you all for answering my questions! I just have one more. Is anyone hosting a #GraphicNovel buddy read? 1w
Deblovestoread I sign up for many buddy reads and keep a reading journal to keep them all straight. It‘s not fancy but it helps keep me on track. Just the name, the host and the list of books by month. Good luck 😊 1w
CatLass007 @Deblovestoread Thank you. I keep a journal of what I want to read and for whichever buddy read they belong to. Adding the name of the host might come in handy. I also have a journal of what I‘ll be needing to buy or check out of the library. Books that are already in my Audible library get added to my TBR journal, especially if they are part of a buddy read. 1w
TheAromaofBooks I definitely have you on the #RandomClassics list!! I'm not sure if anyone is doing an official graphic novel buddy read of any kind - they aren't my usual thing so I don't pay very close attention. 1w
CatLass007 @TheAromaofBooks Thanks for making sure I‘m on the #RandomClassics notification list. And thanks for the info about a graphic novel group. Oh, well… 1w

I had no idea there were so many #JaneAdjacent books until just this month! My true confession is that I‘ve read about half of Pride and Prejudice and that‘s pretty much it. I had a terrible time keeping track of all the characters in The Murder of Mr. Wickham. So I‘ll make every effort to take care of catching up with Jane Austen‘s books while still enjoying as many #JaneAdjacent as possible.

I enjoyed this mystery and its lessons on the history (and, wow, what a history) of chocolate. I didn‘t really buy the romance, though. It didn‘t build, it just sort of happened near the end of the book. I probably will listen to the second entry in this series, The Cocoa Conspiracy, because I enjoy a good mystery and I want to hear more about the history of chocolate.🍫

This isn‘t the type of book I usually read or listen to, but I‘m really glad that I took the time for this one. I described it to a friend as Die Hard meets Designated Survivor meets MacGyver. This was just so much fun! Yes, it‘s violent and bad things happen, but I‘m pretty much in love with the protagonist (hero?), Dez.

I just started listening to this book and already I‘m hooked. An attempt on the life of the Prince Regent AND a lesson on the history of chocolate. I had no idea that over the millennia hot chocolate was a luxurious beverage but no one in Europe knew how to prepare chocolate to be eaten until the mid-1800s. As Mr. Spock would say, “Fascinating.”

This is actually the third book in a cozy mystery series set in a small Scottish village. Near the end of the story the MC is given a sweet Scottish Fold. I prefer to read books in a series in order, but this one is included with my Audible subscription until 9/12 so I read it out of order. The who and why of the mystery are well done so I would recommend the book and the series to anyone who likes cozies.

This book is three novellas by three different authors and each novella is part of a different series. Each murder is written around the theme of cocoa. I‘m not sure any of them works very well as a one-off, but it has brought three different cozy mystery series to my attention and I might look into one or all of them. It‘s a pick mostly for that reason. And for those of you who bake, two of the novellas provide recipes. 😋

This book was sort of a Tom Clancy-light. I haven‘t read anything by Clancy since the 80s because his writing is so dense, short on character development, and technology-focused. Unmanned is about technology also, but it does seem to be a bit more character driven. I give it a pick because I kept reading to find out what happened. I only give picks or bails, nothing in-between for me.

I just realized the narrator for A Passage to India by E.M. Forster, which we are reading for the #HashtagBrigade, is also the narrator for Kim by Rudyard Kipling, which we are reading for #RandomClassics. @TheAromaofBooks and @BarkingMadRead are you two working in cahoots?

BarkingMadRead 🤣🤣 that‘s doing to be nice and confusing for you 🤣🤣 I‘m already a little confused and I‘m reading them 1mo
CatLass007 @BarkingMadRead @TheAromaofBooks Yes, I most definitely am confused. I believe the solution is not to try to read them both every day but to finish one book and start the other. 1mo
TheAromaofBooks I know, I didn't really think about reading two books set in India at the same time!! I think A Passage to India technically takes place at a slightly later date (the 1920s vs around 1900), but it's still a little confusing - especially with the same narrator!! 😂 @BarkingMadRead 1mo
CatLass007 @TheAromaofBooks It‘s not really a big deal because it‘s only September 2. If I tried to continue doing a chapter a day, I‘d be in trouble. But I figured out what would be best for me pretty quickly. 1mo

My review is a little late but this is one of the books I finished for August‘s #TBRTarot, a book with a name in the title. Maximum Ride (known as Max to her friends) is the 14-year-old leader of a flock of children whose DNA has been spliced with bird DNA. These kids have wings and can fly, and their powers are growing. They‘re fleeing the evil corporation who experimented on them and raised them in dog kennels. This is the second book (cont)⬇️

Indigo is journalist Nora Hesper. Nora Hesper is the urban legend and vigilante who punishes those who harm others, particularly when those causing the harm are the members of the cult The Children of Phonos. This time they are kidnapping, torturing, and leaving the mutilated bodies of children in public places. The more Nora learns about the Phonoi the more she begins to question her memories and her very identity. Recommended with caution.

wanderinglynn How did you think the multiple authors worked? Could you tell a style difference between sections? 1mo
CatLass007 @wanderinglynn I have no clue how two authors work together to create a good book, but I am amazed that eight (I think) authors managed to pull this together. It seems to me that one author acted as an editor to hold the story together and maintain continuity. Maybe if I‘d read this instead of listening to it I might have been able to detect a style difference, but I really don‘t think I noticed anything major. 1mo

At first, I felt ambivalent about this book. It took me a while to get on the right wavelength, if that makes any sense. But I kept listening and began to really appreciate the author‘s narrative. I read a book that I think was first serialized in either Analog or Asimov‘s. I think it was in the 1990s. It was about a tween girl who had a very high IQ and seemed to be one of the few survivors of something… A plague? The story was her journal entries from which she eliminated certain words. “It was a kid!” became “Was kid!” I can‘t remember the author or the title, but I remember that I found the book very entertaining. I have to confess I never have read Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl, but I plan to correct that omission whenever my hold comes in at the library. The strange thing is that I know I have had a print copy for years and never read it. And now it‘s boxed up. But Hannah‘s story is compelling. There are happy times but they are overshadowed by what we as readers know is coming. This book is for #TBRTarot, a book with a name in the title.

ravenlee There are a lot of niche buddy reads that are ongoing. There‘s a group reading Stephen King, someone is reading Lord of the Rings, a group (or two) reading children‘s lit (I think the chapter-a-day group is in Charlotte‘s Web now), a scifi group, there‘s a Pickwick Papers read, Jane Austen-related, books (mostly nonfiction) by women…there‘s a lot out there. But the body count doesn‘t add up. Who set the fire? Whose bodies are so badly burned that when placed in a body bag, the bag melts? And who survived. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is the second book in the DS Jenna Morgan series. I found some of it to be repetitive and I think there was some lazy writing in some spots. The main villains and the side villains in both books were misogynistic dog haters with mommy issues. I don‘t know if the author thinks all criminals have these traits or what but I hope the villain in the next book in the series is not the same as the first two. I also became annoyed when, (cont)⬇️

CatLass007 on two separate occasions the main character is described as looking at the lifeless body of a still living person. I really think it‘s lazy writing. I did kind of see the unexpected twist coming, but I was still a little surprised. The third book in the series is about a family killed in a fire that was arson. So, we‘ll see what characteristics the villain has in that book. I‘m listening to these on Audible and the first three books are free. 2mo

This is a mystery/thriller, the first in the DS Jenna Morgan series. This one is personal for Jenna because her sister, Fliss, is missing. As it turns out, it‘s someone Jenna knows, who has taken Fliss. Someone who thinks Fliss recognizes him. A satisfying listen.

I enjoyed this. I don‘t think it‘s a five-star read, but it was fun.

I‘m disappointed that this book isn‘t clicking with me. It‘s not holding my interest at all. So, bye-bye, Constance, we must part ways. Sorry #SundayBuddyRead friends, I will see you next month.

I guess I‘m not intellectual enough, but so far I‘m having a very hard time focusing on this selection for the August #SundayBuddyRead. Somebody please tell me I‘m not alone.😟

Ruthiella I dislike D.H. Lawrence‘s writing style. Maybe it‘s not for you either. (edited) 2mo
CatLass007 @Ruthiella That‘s a possibility. I just was looking forward to the book. I‘ll keep trying but if I continue to not enjoy it, I‘ll bail. Did you change your profile pic? 2mo
Ruthiella @CatLass007 I‘ve not changed the picture? It should still be my cat, Wally. 2mo
CatLass007 It is a cat. I have no way to confirm that it‘s your cat, Wally. 😁 I guess I never noticed before, which is weird because I don‘t usually miss a cat. He‘s a very handsome fellow. 😽 2mo

Romantic Comedy | Curtis Sittenfeld

I just started this selection for #CampLitsy23 and I had a really difficult time during the author‘s description of election night 2016. It is seriously anxiety-inducing to think about #45‘s occupation of the Oval Office. Or the possibility that it could happen again.

Suet624 The idea is so frightening. 2mo

I read an article a few months ago about this series being banned in Florida. I can‘t remember if it was in school libraries or all libraries. I was inspired to find out why. I‘m actually pretty inspired to read every banned book I can because I hate censorship! This wasn‘t exactly great literature but it was fun and I want to find out what happens next. And I want to piss off the censors as much as possible.

This is a “mosaic” novel by eight different authors. One of them is Charlaine Harris, queen of Southern cliches. The MC, Nora, lives on New York‘s Upper West Side, where she has become friends with one of her neighbors, a young woman from Atlanta named Shelby, who has long red-gold hair. I can‘t decide if this is an homage to Steel Magnolias, or laziness on the part of Harris. Stay tuned.

This book was somewhere between a pick and a so-so. It ended up being a pick because all the loose ends were tied up. That doesn‘t always happen in a mystery. There‘s a big wedding. A man is murdered. Four women confess to the crime. There‘s a lot of jumping back-and-forth between backstories and how memories are shaped over time. The narrator was probably the weakest part of the book. (cont)⬇️

CatLass007 The narrator was the weakest part of this book. She seem to have difficulty differentiating between characters. So I think this book would probably be better if you read it in print. 2mo

This is my first time participating in #TBRTarot. The prompt for July is to read a book with the word “and” in the title. I enjoyed watching the TV show as a little girl. I enjoyed seeing the movie as a young woman. I did not enjoy this audiobook as much as I had expected. Lucy spent most of her life doing what others wanted, her husband, her mother-in-law, her sister-in-law. The death of her husband was an opportunity for her to be free (cont)⬇️

CatLass007 to live her own life. People always thought that they knew what was best for her and put a great deal of effort into bending her to their will. She started standing up to the living. But the Captain was incredibly domineering. She‘d start out objecting to something he told her to do and end up doing it anyway. At least he was upfront about his behavior, never pretending it was what was best for her, even if it was at times. 2mo

A number of people participating in the #SundayBuddyRead really, really didn‘t like this book. But I didn‘t hate it. I have a habit of trying out as many books as possible about books, libraries, book stores, writers, etc. The cover is gorgeous, and that‘s it‘s selling point for a lot of people. But it has the word “book” in the title, so I was doomed. What made the book so entertaining for me was discussing it with Littens. And I heard book recs.
