The sheltered girl who thinks she‘s not special is a fantasy trope. But Marlinchen is a lot more Bella Swann in Twilight than Sophie Hatter in Howl‘s Moving Castle. I don‘t think I‘ll finish this.

#JaneAdjacent #BuddyRead #ReadAway2024 #SeriesLove2024 I wanted to love this. But I didn‘t. It was boring. #HailTheBail!
I could not get into this at all: while the subject matter of the lives of Palestinian women is relevant and meaningful, I found the writing style, as well as the audio narration, felt much more like it was intended for a young adult audience. I drifted away pretty quickly.

This has so much potential:set in New Zealand, the main character,Lorraine,a non-Māori,is the widow of a Māori man&the filing clerk in the police station. When her niece‘s son is one of the missing children in a series of abductions,Lorraine is personally affected&starts investigating as the police can‘t seem to solve the case.Sadly,it‘s slow &the writing at times clunky.I might pick it up again as I want to know what happened
I‘m not new to the horror genre, and I‘ve enjoyed LaValle‘s work in the past, but unfortunately I decided to bail on this. I read well over half, but found that my anxiety was increasing, and I‘m not in a place where that‘s OK. That said, this had an interesting plot relating the eerie story of women pioneers in Montana who have brought their curses along as they strive to build new lives.
I read a decent portion of this thriller inspired by Highsmith & Hitchcock's Strangers On the Train yesterday but I am finding myself with zero motivation to return to it. I had a few issues with the novel itself, but I think this confirms what I have suspected for awhile. I am tired of American domestic thrillers. My jam now are suspense novels by international authors (Pushkin Vertigo is great resource; Jónasson; Higashino etc).
Bail at 50%.
Started out great. Yet the pace was all over, and it was just missing *something*. I'm not wasting time wading through treacle. If I'm not enjoying a book anymore, I'm bailing!
Another bail.. I have a hard time concentrating on books (am very busy at work and a bit hyped about that #CampLitsy24 longlist) and this one just didn‘t make sense to me. Great writing, great scenes but they lacked connection I think and I had not really and idea what or whom I was reading about. Maybe I‘ll give it another try when I am a bit more relaxed.
