The Eight
The Eight: A Novel | Katherine Neville
New York City, 1972—A dabbler in mathematics and chess, Catherine Velis is also a computer expert for a Big Eight accounting firm. Before heading off to a new assignment in Algeria, Cat has her palm read by a fortune-teller. The woman warns Cat of danger. Then an antiques dealer approaches Cat with a mysterious offer: He has an anonymous client who is trying to collect the pieces of an ancient chess service, purported to be in Algeria. If Cat can bring the pieces back, there will be a generous reward. The South of France, 1790—Mireille de Remy and her cousin Valentine are young novices at the fortresslike Montglane Abbey. With France aflame in revolution, the two girls burn to rebel against constricted convent life—and their means of escape is at hand. Buried deep within the abbey are pieces of the Montglane Chess Service, once owned by Charlemagne. Whoever reassembles the pieces can play a game of unlimited power. But to keep the Game a secret from those who would abuse it, the two young women must scatter the pieces throughout the world. . . . From the Trade Paperback edition.

I finished this a day or two ago & have been trying to decide what to say. Likes: strong female characters, a juicy conspiracy, lots of history, fabulous locations. Dislikes: no one would give Cat any info, a lot of the math & chess discussions went over my head, the sheer number of famous historical figures involved in The Game began to feel improbable, it was too loong! Mostly a pick but I'm not su0re I'd search out her other books.

#CurrentRead

This is off to a good start but I've had so many distractions this weekend that I haven't gotten far. Hoping to make some progress now that I'm in bed with my tea and some quiet.

1. Ramen bowl from a place I like downtown
2. Most favoritest book ever
3. I don‘t have any. I told my daughter I‘m higher on the evolutionary scale than she is (she has to have hers out in the summer).

ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Perry! My daughter was Perry one year for Halloween: turquoise shirt/pants, duck bill, fedora, felt tail. She won a contest. Ha!!! 1y

It‘s a #coffeecoffeecoffee giveaway! My favorite book (can you tell?) and one of my favorite mugs. We have a bunch of the SBux You Are Here mugs, but the Disneyland one is a special favorite.

JoScho I love those mugs 💕 1y

I feel like I need to drop everything today and reread this—my favorite book of all time.

RadicalReader @Bourriquet76 I hope you enjoy Litsy. I adore your posts!! Seriously the TBR is definitely one I want to conquer as a bookworm, more than those who want to conquer climbing Mount Everest. 1y

I loved this one when I read it years ago. Never read the sequel, I‘m afraid it will tarnish my feelings. #novemberbythenumbers @Tiffy_Reads @JoeStalksBeck

LeahBergen 👏🏻👏🏻 I loved it, too! 2y
annalibris I‘ve read it many times, and love it, but I also did like the sequel. It‘s not as good as the first one, of course, but it does continue the story and finding out what happens to all those wonderful characters is really nice. 2y
ApoptyGina69 I don‘t know this book, but looks up my alley! #stacked! 2y

For those following, this was great! A little DaVinci Code-ish but fun to follow and guess my way through it.

This is up next because Grandma thinks I'll like it. We'll see. Sometimes we LOVE the same books. Other times, it's like we're on different planets.

Mariposa_Bookworm I have two copies of this. My mom's book club read it eons ago. My aunt never reads the books so I always get her copy. Somehow I ended up with both. I always keep them because they came from my mommy. 2y
leslieisreading I loved this when I read it in college! I don't remember a thing about it except that it was DaVinci Code-esque. But I remember being totally absorbed by it. 2y
megt This was assigned as a summer reading book for one of my high school courses ages ago. I never did finish it (I hated being told what to read, even if they were books I ended up liking) but I remember being totally engrossed in it for awhile. Maybe it's time to revisit and actually finish it this time! 2y
BeckaroniAndCheese @megt It's definitely got me hooked and I'm less than 20 pages in. Pick it up again! 2y
megt Good to know! I think I still have a copy - adding it to my summer tbr list! 2y

Eh, this one isn't keeping my interest. Thinking of bailing and coming back to it when I'm in the mood for it. I can't figure out what kind of book I'm in the mood for though...

AlaMich I hate that, when nothing seems very appealing. 2y
BookishJess @AlaMich So do I 🙁 Maybe I'm in a reading slump. 2y
readinginthedark Maybe read a chapter each of some books in different genres and writing styles until something grabs you? 2y

Six years and one month ago, i bought my first ever "real" book with my very own money. It was an impulsive buy (much like what i do whenever i wander into a bookstore) but had left me fascinated with French Revolution, certain Russian Grand Master, and the hope that someday i will have my own library. I have learned so much from something so little. Here's to my future library. ??

I loved this one, it has everything, alternating timelines, mathematics, chess, mystical powers, French Revolution. The blurb on the back called it "A feminist answer to Raiders of the Lost Ark" 'nuff said. #funfridayphoto @Liberty

A story that switches between the French Revolution and the 1970's, centered around an extraordinary chess set and game with global consequences. I loved every minute of it.
