Pickpick

I‘m VERY late to the party for this #LSFBC #LitsySciFiBookclub and May #bookspin pick.
It took me three tries and several weeks to get past page 100. I almost dnf‘d this one. I‘m so glad I didn‘t. Once it clicked for me I really enjoyed it.

64/100 Several times I tried to get this book chosen for #LitsySciFiBookClub. I'm happy it was never picked, it is not a good book. I don't know if it's because its translated from Korean, or if it was the narrator's aloof, emotionless delivery, but I found this very dry. Whole chapters were just info dumps disguised as world building. There wasn't a single likable character to root for in the end. Luckily it's a short novel, 4 1/2 hour

RamsFan1963 audiobook, or I would have definitely DNF out of sheer boredom. 2 ⭐ #Read2025 5d

53/100 I did enjoy the world building and the unique alien species, but I found the ending disappointing and vague. I am assuming the author plans a sequel, because this was left too open to really qualify as a conclusion. Too many unanswered questions, too many dangling plot points. If there is a sequel, I'd probably read it just to see what happens to the friendroe. 3.5/5 #Read2025 #LitsySciFiBookClub

#LitsySciFiBookClub #Read2025 This was not a case of me disliking the book. In fact, I think it was interesting and extremely well written. This is a case of having lost someone dear to me very recently, and deciding that it was not healthy for me to listen to this book. Actually, it was nearly 5 years ago, but I found myself ruminating on what it would be like if I could have a do over and I have stopped playing that head game with myself.

Here‘s my #bookspinbingo list for June. I probably won‘t have time to participate in all of the book clubs I want to participate in but I‘ll probably have time to participate in #litsyscifibookclub, #whimsicalreadsbookclub and the Wednesday Addams book club on Fable. I‘ve already started reading the ARC I need to read this month. It‘s good but I‘m not having fun reading it. I‘ve only read 51 pages. Maybe it‘ll get better. I don‘t know.

Here‘s the book clubs I‘m hoping to participate in this month as well as the June picks. I‘ll be able to read the books for #whimsicalreadsbookclub and #litsyscifibookclub and I‘ll be able to participate in the Wednesday Addams book club on Fable since the audiobook for Come Closer is only 3 hours. I‘m not sure I‘ll have time to participate in the other Fable book clubs even though they‘re all reading books I want to read.

I could sum this book up as an Indian Jones wanna be in a SciFi setting. I liked the idea but I thought the execution was all wrong. It felt like the characters rushed from one heist to the next with something always going wrong in between and yet it was too quickly resolved. I think less scenes and more time spent struggling to find a resolution would have worked better. I also thought some of the interactions between

CSeydel I‘m about two-thirds in and I honestly can‘t tell yet whether this will be a “pick” for me. I felt it started a little too tedious, but once they went to space and the plot got going, I enjoyed it more. It doesn‘t bother me that they are chasing the MacGuffin all over the galaxy, but right now it feels like she‘s set up a lot of loose ends and my ultimate review will depend on how well they‘re resolved. 1mo
CSeydel I‘m listening to the audio and the narrator is terrific. I think it‘s also enhancing my enjoyment that I‘m listening together with my 23-year old son and we‘ve had some interesting discussions as we go along 1mo
CatLass007 @CSeydel I think that‘s awesome! I frequently listen with my cats, but they‘re not exactly great conversationalists. I have listened with others on occasion and it does enhance the experience most of the time. I think it would make it extra special to listen with my godson or one of my other nephews. I have a great niece, but she‘s 10 1/2. I don‘t think she‘s really gonna sit down long enough to listen to a book just yet. 1mo
CatLass007 There were things that I liked about the character, interactions and things that I didn‘t. Finding common ground with other human beings is difficult enough. Finding common ground with a member of an entirely different species with no real single frame of reference would be near impossible. I think the author shows that and I think that her characters managed to work through many of those difficulties together. 1mo
CSeydel @CatLass007 It‘s certainly helped me flesh out my thoughts on the premise, characters and plot. We got on a roll last night speculating about what‘s really going on! 1mo
CatLass007 Please let me know what the two of you think when you finish. If you remember, that is. 1mo
julesG It's been a while since I read the book. Some things didn't make sense to me (like winning space fights against all odds) and I felt like a lot of information was missing - it could have been a book in a series where I hadn't read the previous books. I still enjoyed it, but I wanted more fleshed out characters. 1mo
julesG Well, I guess I wanted more in general. Like another book, more heists. 😂 1mo
Karisimo I haven‘t quite finished yet, but I‘m listening to it and wondered-is the author using made up pronouns? I‘m guessing this is more clear in print! 1mo
TheSpineView @Karisimo I didn't think about it while I was reading. However, now that you point it out, they might be. 1mo
CSeydel @Karisimo Yes, she uses two separate sets of neopronouns for two characters: xe/xyr for Auncle and ey/eir for Greg. 1mo
Karisimo @CSeydel thanks for explaining! 1mo

It was a tie between Recursion and Mickey7. I've read both, so I didn't care either way. l tossed a coin (literally) and the winner is Recursion. If you guys want, we can read Mickey7 in July. Just let me know your thoughts.

CatLass007 Recursion sounds great. I‘m down to a 10-week wait for Mickey7 so I‘ve moved up a bit since I put in my hold. Ten weeks is looking more like August than July but I will read it. 1mo
