Heavy. So many possible interpretations. Intense. Upsetting. It‘s all the things. 👁️

Hey #WithTheBanned readers!

I apologize, but time got away from me and there will be no discussion for July.

Our August book is Speak. Hopefully I‘ll be back on track with discussion posts this month.

Apologies in advance, bc I keep snapping photos of sections for myself. Not unlike Fahrenheit 451, Parable of the Sower, or The Handmaid‘s Tale, I‘m floored by how resonant this feels to right now. #WithTheBanned

TheBookHippie This is required reading for seniors in highschool here. 🙃 3d
Melismatic @TheBookHippie I wish I had read it in high school!! That was prime political awakening time for me during W‘s second term! 3d
TheBookHippie @Melismatic 🙃 yes. I read it in 1984 😵‍💫 Reagan🤬 3d
Melismatic @TheBookHippie it‘s sadly a perennial problem. 3d

Photo still is from the Broadway play production of 1984 - on the boards in New York for 125 performances and 38 previews from May to October 2017. For some reason I was thinking it was pre-Trump Part 1! Time feels like it‘s collapsing on me. I saw it around July, I believe. Olivia Wilde made her debut in it as Julia (second from the left).

Would you believe I never formally read this cover to cover before? I saw a play interpretation on Broadway about 10-ish years ago (considering current affairs in the US, weren‘t we naive then?). It blows my mind the unexpected foresight Orwell seemed to have. Published in 1949 and yet…

The library goddesses have it in for me. Just as I started reading Animal Farm & 1984 for #withthebanned, my hold for Parable of the Sower came in after 4-ish months. I've finished all 3 last week, but I haven't had the mental capacity to post a review. After several days, this is still all I can come up with:
🤯🤯🤯🫢🫢🫢😬😬😬

I recommend all three, but not at the same time. 🫠
@Jadams89

sarahbarnes My hold for Parable just finally came in too! 3w
lil1inblue @sarahbarnes Hooray! I have to say: Though I am an impatient person, it makes me glad that the book is being read by so many right now! 3w
BookmarkTavern Oof! That‘s an intense line up! 2w

I was looking on Libby for 1984 for #withthebanned, and the waitlist was a mile long. But the Animal Farm/1984 combo was available. Lucky for me, but did no one else realize they could just borrow this instead of waiting? 😂

ChaoticMissAdventures I have the same thing with Once and Future King! Months wait for the full audio, but there is also an option to get each book separately now, no wait! I think people just don't know what to look for. 1mo
lil1inblue @ChaoticMissAdventures Fair point. I believe I also searched by author, so if they search by title, it may not come up. At least I lucked out! 1mo

Hey, #WithTheBanned readers. Our July book is 1984 by George Orwell.
If you need to skip this month due to the current political climate, it‘s completely understandable.

Bookwormjillk I‘ve been having trouble getting a lot of these from my library- long waits. Everyone in my city must have the same idea. My both recently read this one though so we should own a copy. 1mo
Amiable My library book club is doing a Read for Your Rights banned books club and this book is the October selection so I may wait until then. 1mo
Booksblanketsandahotbeverage I read this one in March. Five 🌟s 1mo
Read4life Picked up my library hold this morning. 1mo
dabbe Just reread this a few months ago. The first time I read it was in a college literature course in the year 1984! It is prevalent now more than ever. 1mo
AllDebooks I'm going to skip this month, as I reread it recently. Such an incredible book but terrifying to read in the current political situation. 3w

AllDebooks It actually gave me a jolt, not from my perspective but my eldest child's pov. I think they had a very similar journey and are still figuring things out. It did open up a conversation between us, which is always good. 1mo
Karisa I could relate to some of the period and gyno scenes. Other parts were totally different perspective for me to consider. As a teacher, it feels important to try and understand more povs. I liked seeing so much through Maia‘s eyes—very brave and vulnerable 1mo
lil1inblue I liked how e included so many relatable experiences like getting your period, going to the gyno, navigating relationships and sex, etc., but then showed them from eir non-binary perspective. It helped to to understand 1mo
